Is revolution always good?

Topic #240:

Is revolution always good?

There have been an amazing number of revolutions and uprisings in the world this year. Are they always good events? What makes a revolution a progressive or regressive event?

  1. Whether a revolution is “good” or “bad” depends on your perspective. Same with whether it is progressive or regressive. Most importantly, to be a revolution, there must be a radical change in the government which affects society – how people live, work, their rights, privileges and responsibilities.

I think most people here in the West would agree that the nascent revolutions in Egypt, Libya and other Middle Eastern countries are good and hopefully progressive, although it is too early to tell. If they end up being just a change of authority with no real change for the people, then they are not revolutions.

I would consider “progressive” any revolution that expands human rights and the development of a civic society. Iran’s revolution of 1979, for example, for me (and I think many Iranians) was regressive, in that it restricted the right of free speech and especially the rights of women. It will take a long time for the Iranian people to be free of these restrictions. On the other hand, the government that existed prior to that in Iran was worth breaking free from.

We will have to take a wait and see attitude toward developments in newly “freed” Middle Eastern countries. I have hope.

    1. I too have hope for the “freed” Middle Eastern countries but I also fear that the actions of governments around the world are influencing the direction that these revolutions will follow; particuarly the newly disclosed information regarding the actions of the intellegent services.

  2. For M̶̲̥̅ε̲̣̣̣̥, all these revolutions (or distirbances) going on around the world Α̲̅Я̅E̳̐ all distractions. People Α̲̅Я̅E̳̐ just pursueing their various intrests wiv D̶̲̥̅̊ cover of fighting for rights. This doesn’t make it justified and I’m suprised that people Α̲̅Я̅E̳̐ caught up in this hype and Α̲̅Я̅E̳̐ destroying morals and values.

  3. A friend of mine planned on moving as he was not happy with his neighbours.I told him he was leaving the ones he knows and replacing them with ones he does not know. Some time later he said he now lives next to the neighbours from hell. This is what I think of revolutions,They are a good idea at the time. No matter what system we are living under , there are rules and guide-lines we must adhere to. Freedom is an exagerrated word. Perhaps one day we will get it right but not in my time.

  4. not always good. although some uprisings lead to country’s freedom and democracy, yet the lives it cost during the revolution can no longer be restored.

  5. Revolution can be both helpful and destructive at the same time. I think that people that abuse power should be brought to justice and sometimes it needs to be by any means necessary when you have not been left a choice. Yet, insinuating chaos after you have defeated your target does not make you look any better then the person committing the abuses to begin with.

  6. Revolution is good for overthrowing a dictator. Just like here in the Philippine EDSA Revolution last 1986. But I think that after the revolution, the people should be more vigilant about what will happen next since the transition of the new government is crucial. Might be a good start for the country but another problem arises from the replacement of the dictatorship.

  11. When there is a revolution there is a reason behind it and that is the people want change, They are tired of tyrants, banks, crooks, and all it too was a fruit seller who was shot in Tunisia that started the revolutions in the arab countries.

  12. Revolution is always good. As long the reason is trinity. If the ones in charge are breaking the country apart yes, it is time for a change, but you also must have the backing of the majority!

  13. Of course revolution is always good, no it’s always great thing to happen
I think what makes it aggressive is the rebels
If they want it to be aggressive or peaceful
    It’s the rebels decision
I’m Arabian, Egyptian and I think every thing gonna be great
And every single bad thing will turn to be great
Not just in Egypt but in the whole region
And in a lot of places around the globe
Less corrupt, more justice & peace come on
    How that can be bad
