Would you ever get a tattoo?

Would you ever get a tattoo? If you had one, what made you decide to get your first? If you don’t have one, why or why not would you ever consider getting one?

According to one survey, 36% of American’s aged 18-29 have tattoos, the highest number in history.

  1. I got mine done 11 years ago. It was before the spouse & I were married, he was getting one so I thought ‘what the heck?’ No regrets and I’d definitely like to get another some day!

  2. Nope! I don’t like the idea of never being able to remove it. Even with modern day removal technologies, it would still leave a scar. If I ever got a tattoo I think it would be something very little like a star on my foot or wrist so that it wouldn’t draw a lot of attention or look gaudy.

  3. I’m going to get a dragon and a tiger. One on each arm. And my anniversary date on my forearm. With the anniversary date, when I get older, I can look at it as a testament to how long my wife and I have been together (hoping that we are still together)

  5. For the record I’d never get one but to each their own.
    However, I’d like to get in on the inevitable “tattoo removal” wave. I predict in a few years tattoos will no longer be trendy – quite the opposite. Huge numbers of consumers will be giving their youthful decision a second thought. It will be a monster money-making business with a significant run.

    1. Sorry to disappoint, but people have been saying the same thing for years. For some reason, loads of people seem to think that tattoos are just becoming popular now, when in fact it’s been happening for almost a century. There’s an article in a 1920s Vanity Fair Magazine which claims “tattoos aren’t for sailors anymore!” (they never were, FWIW), telling their readers they can go and get tattooed because it’s huge. So yeah, good luck with that, haha. 😉

      2. Temporary tattoos! Stick one on the side of your neck and wear it all day. hehe. That can be a penalty whenever someone calls you out on a duplicate topic.

  12. So a question for anyone who will answer – my daughter is seeing a young man she will likely marry sometime within the next year or so. He is a lover of body art – has a lot of it. He is a decent, family kind of guy and treats my daughter better than her kid’s dad (1st ex – who cheated on her) or her 2nd ex who turned out after a year to be a physical/psychological abuser, ever did. Her kid’s dad has decided that “boyfriend” is a bad, unacceptable person for “his kids” to be around simply because he has tatoos (which are mostly faith-based). Do anyone have “words of wisdom” for getting around this prejudiced viewpoint? I keep telling them to simply the high road and time will prove boyfriend is a good person. The “kids” are 12 & 16 and fully capable of making their own judgement calls on the kind of person he is.

    1. Maybe “Dad” need to get to know “boyfriend” before he judges. Really though, I don’t think you will be able to change his mind. The kids, at their ages might have a better influence. If they like “boyfriend”, maybe they can convince “dad” that he isn’t a bad guy just because of the tattoos. Whats the underlying issue? Is “dad” worried that the kids will want a tattoo? I’m sure regardless if ‘boyfriend’ had tattoos or not, the kids would eventually make the decision on their own.

  13. So far I have 5. I have plans for 4 or 5 more already. I wish they didn’t cost so much..but probably for the best. My first 3 tattoos didn’t have much meaning. I was young, 18, 19 and 20yo. I don’t regret but I wish I could go back and choose something that means the world to me. Luckly, they are in places I can’t see without a mirror so I don’t think about them often. I don’t understand why I like them, maybe because its a freedom of speech kind of thing. I’m not shy, but communication can be difficult for me sometimes. Having tattoos helps express who I am as a person. A person who loves beauty and color and who can see meaning in random phrases. Tattoos will never get old to be.

  14. For me tatoos are so working class, and yes, I am just that. Some time ago a girlfriend of mine said she wanted one. My reply was “Sure, it makes the body easier to identify.” The topic never surfaced again.

  17. That’s easy: no. The thought of paying someone to repeatedly jab my skin in order to etch on a design that I may not be as crazy about in the future and that will inevitably look like a wrinkly mess doesn’t appeal to me. My question is, why is tattooing so immensly popular? So many people feel the need to get some kind of tattoo–young people, old(er) people, men, women. What is the attraction? I’m not being facetious; I’m geniunely interested.

  18. I almost got a tattoo once, long before they were the rage. It was back when I was in the army. I was going to get a cute little something, then I pictured me 80 years old with that cute little something and it wasn’t so cute anymore.
    That killed the desire for me and I have never had the desire since and I am not 80 yet!

  21. My first tattoo on my 18th birthday was a lightning bolt on the lower right side of my tummy. thick outline, Yellow fill with white and dark shading/highlights. On the surface, it doesn’t look like it means much, but it has become more and more relevant in my life now, than I ever imagined.

    Currently, I have 7 tattoos, 1 inch lobe gauges and I am attending a business college for a degree in accounting – seems out of place, but I enjoy it a lot. Anyway, tattoo meanings; I like it as representing energy. The kind of energy that runs through all of us and the energy we can’t deny of living things. Some of my views have been influenced by the string theory.

    The best thing that ever happened to me; My boyfriend. He was among many friends I made at my business college and my most important one. One of the first things I learned about him is his (awesome) DJ skills and his DJ name: DJ Protonic. <3<3<3 Protons, Protonic energy, electricity, molecules, electrons, etc., the whole Sha-Bang! Holy Shit!

    I love this boy more than anything and beyond. The incredible 'coincidence' that occurred doesn't change the fact how amazing and unexpected things turned out! (that's not even half of it!). This turned out longer than I thought, this turned out to be more than just a tattoo story. I apologize for the ranting-ness but I am a firm believer in that 'everything happens for a reason' and 'Every action has an opposite and equal reaction'

  22. i got one when I was 26 because I lost my necklace that my sister gave me of an ankh symbol so I got it so I couldn’t lose it again. Means a lot to me.

  23. I really want one but I really can’t think of something that would really be meaningful for me, and that I know would be meaningful in the years to come. I really don’t want to look down at it and think, “wow, that was a stupid idea!” Therefore, until I can think of something brilliant for , I will remain ink-less.

    1. yeah nice to have a tattoo.. but if you keep thinking you will not have it forever. i mean you must choose with your field of interest or something with your hobbies. tattoo will have meaning as days pass by..

      and i my case i did not choose that was not found in any catalog or magazine. that will give some identity and be proud of..

  26. yeah each one of us has different views about things because we are just human. in this issue we have our own reason. for me i get one when i was in 2nd year high school. until now am happy for it. it some sort of identity and a way of expressing.

  28. No way. NEVER. I just don’t like it. It looks dirty on skin. Well, just my opinion though. Besides, how could you be sure that you still want that tattoo symbol etched on your skin forever?? What if after 5 years, you don’t find it anymore appealing or the symbol just lose its significance? Then you have it on your skin forever. Well, I’m just wondering.

  29. Yep. Absolutely. Already have. It is a dragon and a flower and I got it when my beautiful dog, Bindi, died.

    The night after she died I dreamt that I was with her and she lay down on the footpath and passed away quietly. As the life slipped out of her she gently turned into a chalk drawing of a beautiful purple dragon. Then as I watched she gradually took on real form, rose up from the footpath and flew away on her huge strong purple wings.

    Not long after she passed we went away for a holiday to a lovely, quirky, beach town. There was a tattoo parlour there. I’d never really contemplated having a tattoo, but something made me go in and there on the wall was the dragon that Bindi had become. It took me the whole week to work up the courage to do it, but finally on our last day I did and have never regretted it for one minute. It’s like she is always with me and I love that.
