If you started your own nation, what would be in your constitution?

Topic #178:

If you started your own nation, what rules would be in your constitution? What country would you model your rules after?

Bonus: Whether you like the USA or not, two documents, the Deceleration of Independence and the Constitution, are landmark references in the creation of government. They’re also good reads for anyone trying to start an organization of any kind.  Also see, Magna Carta.

  3. I think the typo in the question is interesting: the “Deceleration” of Independence. Subconscious slip of some sort? ;>)

  5. I think the Constitution of the United States of America is one of the most perfect pieces of literature man has written throughout all of human history. It ranks right up there with the Bible, the Koran, and any of the other great works that reflect man’s effort to interpret and convey the Words of God as instructions to guide us in our dealings with each other and all God’s good creations; teaching compassion, dignity, honesty and integrity. The problems begin when Man puts his own personal, selfish ideas, goals and objectives above the overall good of the masses and “bends” the interpretation to suit those ends.

    This country, America was Great! Yes, that is the past tense. We were the land of the free and home of the brave, the Great Melting Pot – the place where all the diverse cultures, ideals, beliefs of the world came to contribute to the overall common good. No One came here to stand out, to be separate, to maintain their own uniqueness beyond themselves. They came to be part of something Greater than the sum of its parts; they came to be AMERICAN. That no longer is the case.

    I would keep the Constitution and Australia would be my model, with their Prime Minister, Julia Gillard the President. She subscribes to the ideals and beliefs I feel America has drifted away from, which made us the Great country we were, and that I believe the majority of Americans still hold true to. Unfortunately, we have allowed the “squeaky wheels” to reign supreme, to the sacrifice of the common good and our ideals.

    It started with taking prayer – God – out of our classrooms, and has been a slippery slope since. You may not believe in God, or Satin or any other Divine or Higher Power, and that is your right. However, no one can deny that evil exists. But that’s another topic.

  6. I would rather prefer a democratic form of government rather than a dictatorial type which has been implemented during the Marcos era. I don’t know why, all I know is that every people in a nation should play their role as constituents in order to hit their mark and that is, aiding poverty. It cannot be done by one person only, and we should not rely mainly on the leader of the state. We should really work as one with unity.

  7. The Deceleration of Independence – to slow down the rate of advancement of independence. Experienced when one moved back in with one’s parents ;-). In UK politics we have a similar document, the Retardation of Democracy…

  8. My Constitution would be mostly the same as the United States, with a few changes, deletions and additions:
    1. Get rid of the Electoral College. It’s obsolete. The people need to have the right to a direct vote for their leaders.
    2. There should be a Labor Code that guarantees paid time off, paid maternity leave and a set number of hours to work per week (above that would be overtime). – This is not radical – we are the only 1st world country that doesn’t have at least two of these things.
    3. Single payer health care for all.
    4. Clarification of the 2nd amendment, that it doesn’t mean everyone has the right to own a gun, only the military and police, rifles for hunters. Anyone else would have to go through a rigorous and national background check.
    5. Public financing of elections and/or a limit to how much a candidate can collect and spend on her/his campaign.
    6. Guaranteed free and equal public education for all at least through high school.
    7. An energy policy that would require research and development of “clean” sources of energy, and penalties for polluters.
    Sound like it would cost too much money to do all these things? There would also be a provision that would outline a fair tax policy:
    8. People making more than a million dollars would pay a higher percentage of their income with no loopholes. (I’d like to say billionaires should pay more but I don’t even think any one person should earn that amount – it’s obscene). Large corporations that have a profit margin of a certain amount (not percent) would pay more in taxes. However, if the corporation used the revenue to reinvest in their business which would benefit the company, its employees and the economy as a whole, they would not pay as much.
    9. There would be a very hefty penalty for a company to relocate overseas. This penalty would be distributed to the displaced workers in the U.S.
    10. People making below a certain amount (which would change over time – $100k doesn’t mean today what it did, say, 30 years ago) would pay less in taxes.
    11. Amending the Constitution would require what it currently requires.

  9. I would have all the friends I have, who I still have , from all over the world, I would go more for the French way of government. No stupid names like spring onions for a boy or bacon bits for a girl. Remember the guy who said Jewish people were horrible and was sent to jail. You need that law. Really it is called respect.We are not all great people and a few bad apples make it hell for the rest of us.

  10. The purpose of human life is to prosper and live happily.
    The function of government is to provide the conditions that let individuals fulfill that purpose.
    The prime law guarantees those conditions by forbidding the use of initiatory force, fraud or coercion by any person or group against any individual’s self, property or contract.
    Article 1
    No person, group of persons or government shall initiate force, threat of force or fraud against any individuals self, property or contract.
    Article 2
    Force is morally and legally justified only for protection from those that violate article 1
    Article 3
    No exceptions shall exist for Articles one and two.

    This is the Prime Law formulated by the Twelve Visions Party. A new political arm of the Society of Secrets. Which is no longer secret. The party is being formed accross the nation. If you get the opportunity jump in and support the movement.

  11. I wouldn’t have a constitution. I would just be supreme leader and if people didn’t like it I would catapult them into the ocean.
