What percentage of Americans believe in the devil?

Topic #107:

According to a Gallup Poll, nearly 70% of Americans believe in the Devil.  Do you? Why or why not? Why do you think 70% of Americans believe as they do on this issue? Do you think this number is higher or lower than other countries in the world? Why? Do you think the devil is behind the choice of this topic?

  1. People who are religious are more likely to believe in the devil. According to the poll:

    * Eighty-three percent of Americans who said religion is “very” important in their lives believe in the devil, but the number drops to 62% among those for whom religion is “fairly” important.

    * Only 22% of those who said religion is “not very” important said they believe in the devil.

    * Seventy-nine percent of Protestants and 70% of Catholics believe in the devil.

  8. Unfortunately I supposed that 70% are the same idiots who believe in god. That’s why umanity is so lower rated and we still live in a genocide universe.Probably eliminating the three main monoteistic religions could change the scenario. Good life to all of you atheists!

    1. I don’t think belief in the devil, God, or any other “religion” is the problem. People are. I am utterly against murder and genocide, but how can you expect large people groups to get along when brothers and sisters, parents and kids, and husbands and wives can’t even get along? I’d like to meet someone who was perfect, or as you say, “rated” higher than the rest of us.

  10. I am an atheist. No God, no devil waiting for me. Fairy tales for children. But for adults? Please give a better education, maybe a little Greek philosophy, Socrates, Epicurus? Or German philosophy, Immanuel Kant, Friedrich Nietzsche, Karl Marx? Maybe then not 70% of US citizens believe, that there a devil is waiting for some of us? Nor 70 virgins, as Muslim terrorists hope?

    He is us. Hence our frustrated drive to drown out our collective conscience; that voice that is unmistakable in its power to guide us straight and true. We go deaf to all but the latest electronic diversion, those things we must have to claim happiness. We fabricate the size of any issue hoping the clamor of our voices will convince all of its importance. We run out of fear that the claxon that sounds with every heartbeat is not the ‘devil’ who resides beneath – but the ousted angel who resides within.

  16. Yesterday I had the pleasure of spending my Easter dinner with close friends. While eating, the conversation back peddled into a discussion about the belief of Satan, heaven, etc. Keep in mind this particular group of people are those that I go to church with. The agreement was temptation holds strong but if there was a hell or a “devil” why would everyone be given the choice to be saved and forgiven of their sins? If God wanted to separate the best from the rest, wouldn’t there be a class of untouchables who were perfect and didn’t sin. Would those be the ones to go to Heaven? And what about the rest of the lot? Well, they would continue sinning and just lay in the ground to rot. I chose forgiveness but everyday I also choose sin. What is the devils part in all of this? He is not the one to judge the living and the dead. He is the supposed ruler of Hell in this argument. I find it interesting that in many cases where people do not believe in one being to follow in faith, they believe in a devilish character, not specifically Satan as Lucifer. As a Christian, I find my heartstrings being tugged at this one. Obviously according to The Bible there was an angel who fell and became evil. This fallen angel being named Lucifer in Isaiah 14:12. Lucifer being represented as a serpent in the Garden of Eden at the time mankind was created. There is no concept of time in the Bible but there’s also not a story in Genesis about Lucifer falling from the heavens. So where does all of this play a part? With all these arguments, I can see where the confusion would come from and how some could doubt that there is a devil or Satan. I just don’t understand how those without faith in a higher power believe in an evil being
