Have you ever considered writing a book? If so what kind?

Topic #99:

Have you ever considered writing a book? If so what would it be about? Make a list of the ideas you want to cover, or the themes it might have.  If you’ve never considered writing a book, what other major work have you thought about (a movie? a symphony?). Write a paragraph or two about what you imagine it would be like.

  3. I’ve considered writing 3 books over the years, two of which I have actually made progress on and one that needs a lot of updating based on what has happened over the years.

    This latter one was the first I thought of while in high school and was considering being a teacher. So I read a lot about different school systems around the country and what they were doing to provide exciting, alternative ways to structure teaching and even the buildings themselves. A lot has happened with kids, schools, funding, etc. and I think what I was considering has become a bit outdated or harder to justify as the early “experiments” seem not to have lasted in the face of much more standardization, aging infrastructure, discipline issues, etc.

    The next book I thought about when I was in college and it was a sci-fi novel. But for years I could not really see what would be the right idea for me, though I wrote a number of short stories with ideas around the novel. A year or so ago I had the breakthrough, but the time has not been really available. However, I’m looking to have more time soon and that will help.

    My third is a book on Agile Values and Principles related to the consulting work I do. A few notable people have suggested the topic has been covered a lot, but I think there are some things I have not heard others say in a single volume that people new to Agile practice might find useful. So I am collecting a lot of notes and writing some things for that right now.

  4. I have written a book, which I’m working to sell, and which is why I began my blog, Spiritual Crossroads. If I write on the books I want to write or have written or will write, I won’t get much else done today! Instead, I posted another blog post on the topic of my blog – which right now is Lent (now doesn’t that sound just what you want to read!) but Lent with a twist (now doesn’t that sound more interesting?:).

  10. Personally ,I have never considered writing a book , but other people have often said that I should write my life story.
    This is what I started doing when I first began on WordPress but I did leave a lot out so maybe a book is a possibility.

  14. I would love to write a book and have a brief outline done. My favorite genre is historical fiction and my planned book is in this genre. I have the basics of my plot down, but am running into problems in trying to find a way to have my characters go back in time and make it seem believable. My targeted age group is 10 to 12 years old. My protagonist is 11 years old. Hoping to come up with a solution soon. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    1. Have you seen “somewhere in time” with jane Seymour and Christopher reeve? I was about 14 when I saw it and, at the time, the time travel was as ‘realistic’ as I could imagine.

I am working on a story now for 10-12 year olds where two kids visit an historic site and after a loud clash of thunder and lightening and a brief torrent of rain, they find themselves stepping out of the building find they are back in time. Now I’m just trying to work in their big conflict (other than that they don’t know how to get back to the present).

      2. With a time machine, it’s open to your imagination, No period of time is impossible to reach– The Old West; the future (Mars); some period of time that intrigues you; the 50s, 60s, etc.

  15. Yes, very much so. My husband’s history and our battle to be together. After all, the story has everything (shameless promotion follows): death, travel, foreign lands, romance, love (lots of love), Civil Rights, Human Rights, politics…..

    We shall see – I’m not considering because I think of myself as an aspiting writer, but because it is a history (my husband’s life before me particularly) that is worth sharing. An extraordinary life lived by an ordinary man.

  16. This is a really thought provoking topic … I’d love to write a book but haven’t yet come up with a plot or a subject to get my head around! I did however, write a very small (but perfectly formed) book about a day I spent in Warsaw in 2007. I’ll share …

  17. Writing a vacation guide about places to visit in New York other than the usual midtown attractions. Also working on 2 other manuscripts dealing with a very trying time in my life and the other one dealing with what may be considered discrepancies in the Bible.

  19. I have written a book that is yet to be published. But before now I wanted to write a novel about all the experiences I have had since I was young, I couldent continue because I stombled into an idear that wouldent have come my way if I wasnt thinking about putting my experiences into writing, and that helped me to know exactly what kind of book I should actually write..the first idear was only a “window” into the big picture. So if you want to write I sujest you think deep and wide you will be suprised that the first thing you actually want to write on was only a “wake up call” when you finally discover what to actually write about.   21. I have written a book that is not quite finished. My working title is “How Not to Buy a House!” It is our adventures/mishaps/encounters in our 75 year old house. The story begins during our first week in residence. Some eighteen years (and lots of stuff to write about) later, we are still in this dinosaur of a place, and things are still happening. I did put a small story on my blog one time… when I was feeling nostalgic. “Bats in the chimney, a ghost in the hall, giant spiders, and duct tape” was the title. I work on my book regularly, in between my actual business, my children, this house and what ever else life throws at us… I don’t sleep much, so night becomes my writing time. My book written like a casual conversation between friends, sort of Erma Bombeck-ish. You know, a little serious, a little funny, and all true.
    One day I hope to have it published. That is, when I move out of this house so the story will have an ending!

  27. I personally think we should all pretend that we’re a Z-List celebrity and all write a Biography about Sweet-FA.

    Include all the pointless and inane rubbish that isn’t even worth mentioning let alone remembering, name drop people in a blatant attempt to make our dumb and useless lives even less pathetic and to include witty references to great quotes and intelligent remarks – made by OTHER people.

    Further more we could include all the events, opportunities and encounters that nearly happened by waffling on endlessly about what would have maybe happened of we had or hadn’t done this, that or the other too.

    Frank and open discussions about other celebrities we’ve had with friends as well as the latest in amusing anecdotes we’ve heard about others is a must, as is endless self promotion and smug self appraisal on our future hopes and dreams.

    Not to forget an assortment of chapters which inevitably show our tender sides, how we love animals and all strive for world peace are a must and yet some way of showing that we stand out as an individual too and are unique in our assessment of the modern world.

    A few glorious photographs in key poses to show our natural and inner diamond sparkle will have all the ingredients as a best seller.

    Failing that we can all hump gloriously in the knowledge that a damned good hard core personal video of us stuffing someone we vaguely know will catapult our bony little ass into Stringfellows where we can sit astride societies higher echelon…

  29. Have I ever considered writing a book?
    My, oh my, I’ve been working on one since 2000! Intetwined Love, evolving from family genealogy, has both required much research and been interrupted by “life happenstances.” But I’m plugging along.
    I’m also writing a lengthy short story—mii-novel–on another genealogy uncovered plot in 1673 Rhode Island.
    People tell me I should lay it aside again to write another about my latest life happenstance, being “discovered” by a full sibling ten years younger than I. This story would be a reader’s dream—it involves romantic twists and trysts. However, I aim to complete Intertwined Love first.
    Oh, yes, I definitely have considered writing a novel—and have acted, however slowly, on completing my first one.

  30. I have an idea for a series of children’s books and an idea for a novel.
    The children’s series of books is about a dog named Moose who becomes a real boy for short periods of time and then turns back into a dog. I have not yet decided what triggers his metamorphosis. In the story Moose enjoys playing with the twin brother and sister. He wants to be able to go do things with them that he is not allowed to do as a dog. The different stories will be at different times in the kids’ life as they grow up and experience different milestones.

    The idea I have for a novel is loosely based on my family history. There are some things that happened in my family for which the details have never been discussed. Most of the people who know the true facts are no longer living so I cannot find the true answers to my questions. I want to use the novel as a chance for me to tell a story filling in the blanks with my imagination. Some of the things were hurtful experiences to my family members. I do not want them to be hurt by what I write or make the situations worse than they really were.
    One of the partial stories of my family is my grandma gave birth to twin boys shortly after marrying my step grandfather. She never named them and did not ever mark their graves at the cemetery. She did not even tell my mother about them. My mother heard about it from another family member. My great grandfather was not a very nice person and my grandma was somewhat afraid of him. Many people in the family claim he was schizophrenic. My grandma and great grandmother always seemed to have a secret between the two of them. They both took this secret to their graves. My story will tell what that secret was.
