Join Automattic’s Worldwide WP 5k 2015
Automatticians, members of the WordPress community, and bloggers around the world come together for our annual run.
The 2015 edition of the Automattic Worldwide WP 5k (#WWWP5k) is around the corner!
Automatticians already hit the trail at our company meetup last week. It was early — the sun was barely peeking behind the mountains in Park City, Utah — but the air was crisp and the morning was perfect for running a 5k. (Staying fit is an important part of our company culture.)

Now it’s your turn! The Worldwide WordPress 5k will take place next week from Monday, October 26th to Sunday, November 1st.
Lace up your running/walking/hiking/hopping shoes and join us for the 5k blogged about around the world! Read on to find out how to participate.
What is a 5k?
A 5k run/walk is approximately 3.1 miles long. You can run, walk, or skip; it’s totally up to you. There’s no time limit and there’s just one requirement: that you participate! You can do it at a gym or outdoors, on a treadmill or on a track, or even swim or bike instead of running/walking — just get moving!
A 5k (or 3.1 miles) is roughly equal to:
- Twelve laps around a track.
- Approximately 6000-7500 steps.
- Approximately 50-60 minutes of brisk walking.
When can I run?
We’re all busy, but we want you to participate, so we’re giving you lots of flexibility. You can complete the WWWP5k any time between Monday, October 26 and Sunday, November 1st.
Who’s invited?
Anyone who’s ever used or loved WordPress (and your families and friends, too). Heck, the entire Internet is invited!
How do I participate?
Post about it on your site and tag the post “wwwp5k” so that other runners around the world can find you and read about your experience. If you’re not on WordPress.com, link back to this announcement post so others might join in and participate, too.
You’re welcome to blog your entire route and your preparation (a video or gallery, perhaps?) but above all we’d love to see where you are and how you’re completing your 5k. Share a picture of you and what you see when you cross the finish line and tell us your location as you complete your 5k with the rest of the world.
Here are a few additional tips and resources:
- Get a pedometer.
- Use mapmywalk.com, RunKeeper.com, Runtastic, or any other fitness app to chart your course.
- Set your car’s odometer to 0, leave your house and drive along a safe course with sidewalks for walking/running, until you reach 1.55 miles (you can loop back the same way), or chart out a 3.1 mile course.
Will you be joining us for the Worldwide WP 5k next week?
Sounds fun! This desert dweller will be enjoying the tropical climate of Maui during that week, so it’s a perfect place to do some running!

Sounds good. I have a 5.3 mile lake to walk around so I guess that distance qualifies. Plus its the change of season so I’ll have lots of colorful photos to add.

@bspargo: Wow, you should go on the trail inside Haleakala! Check it out, it has amazing views, critters, and flora: http://exploratorius.us/2014/02/04/halemauu-and-keoneheehee-the-finest-trail-in-america/

Look out for a Parkrun. They are brilliant measured and timed 5k runs for all abilities. You will be applauded just as much if you come last as if you blazed through the finish first.

Given I walk this far every day, I can designate one walk as my entry!

Well I wanted to get back to my daily walking, so this may be a good time to start.

Sounds like fun, I’m in for one end of November so why not add another. I may just mix it in with a zombie paintball hayride I have on the agenda.

I try to walk every day, so this sounds like fun. Although I might be swimming, after the 8+ inches of rain we’ve had here in Bynum, Texas!

My family finished a 3k for Father’s Day this year. The 5k has been in the planning stage since then and now I get the chance to do it without paying for anything, and still ‘run’ with others. Thanks WP!

I’ve blogged several times about the development of a local rail trail, and the last link – a bridge replacing an old RR trestle – will be opened on the 26th. Perfect time for walking 5k!

Nice legs and colorful shoes! Can I do it on my old elliptical machine? If so, I’m in. Just have to convert miles to kilometers.

You can definitely do the 5k on an elliptical machine! 5k is 3.1 miles.

Since last June, 2014. I have been walking two 2.0 mile street tracks – mapped out in my little town, and one that is 2.50 miles around a Park, up main street, past the post Office and back home. Total 6.5 miles every other night – never knew it was more than 5K..
lost 35 Lbs. since I started – Doctors are excited – still moving, going to lose 50Lbs.

Did 2.8 miles of it! Now have the rest – last night spent with my feet up and on painkillers but I will complete it. Learning that I need goals.

It’d be great if this was run with Strava too, they make distributed athlete challenges really easy to organize!

“wwwp5k” link doesn’t open for me, is there any problem in the link or just me? I would love to participate.

Hi Q! Did you mean this link: https://wordpress.com/tag/wwwp5k ? What happens when you visit it?
To participate, all you need to do is get out there and do a 5k! Blogging about or sharing the experience on other social media is totally optional, but highly encouraged, obviously 🙂

I did my bit here at the southern point of Africa https://hesterleynel.wordpress.com/2015/10/28/automattics-worldwide-wp-5k-2015-we-went-walkabout/
Question: The #WWWP5k does not seem to lead anywhere? It just keeps returning me to my own site.
