It’s Theme Thursday and today I’m happy to present two new free themes: Cubic and Wilson.

Wow, that was quick! I literally only just settled in Sela. These are both lovely, such great quality themes lately. Well done!

I liked Wilson theme looks like a good theme to post long posts/ large amounts of posts. The only thing is, is that it has no other colour schemes than the default one which can be problematic to free users. Other than that it feels good enough.

I like the layout and the nice font in Cubic. Thinking of changing to this new theme. Many thanks to WordPress for launching 4 new themes at the start of 2015.

Cubic seems to be for photographers and bloggers who are more photograph oriented.

Cubic is just what I’ve been looking for – perfect for my new ‘venture’ for 2015. Now all I need to do is improve my photographic skills….

Cubic looks great, but it’s yet another theme that hides the navigation menu away behind a hard-to-find “hamburger” icon. That just simply isn’t obvious enough for many people. Am I missing an option to make menus permanently visible or is this a worrying trend of building bad UX just to maintain an overly minimalist UI? I’m losing track of the number of themes that would be otherwise okay if it weren’t for the fact that they’d be unnavigable.

Hiding the navigation menu behind a toggle by default is definitely a design decision, and one not everyone will like. We don’t have an option to change that in themes, but the good news is that we have plenty of themes that do not hide the menu behind a toggle by default. Check out these recent themes that do not:

Most themes employ a toggle to make the menu more manageable on smaller screen sizes like an smart phone or tablet.

    HI
Still looking for a theme which offer number of posts displayed in a slideshow
(much saving space at the front page than a vertical viewing)
    Bye

Just made the switch to Wilson just right now.

What I like about the theme:

I don’t have to put a header picture, which takes out a major thing I have to decide on. The decision on what picture to put the header was, for me, as significant as naming a baby. I’m not kidding.

The menus for the topics are on the left side of the screen, which I feel will entice the readers to click more on them, yay!

I like the black, gray and white colors, they’re very me. I am not a fan of the red though, but I’m ok with it.

The font is large, which suits my text heavy blog. The look of the theme registers well on the mobile version.

I like that the tagline is less conspicuous since I think my tagline is quite cheesy and lame. I haven’t really thought about a great tagline yet, so bear with me y’all

I like that I can customize it with a site logo, which is probably the next step after changing to a .com domain just recently. Since I’m not good with designing (the terms finance and MD in my user name are clues to that 🙂 ), that logo might take a while.

    Thank you Anders Noren
