Emoji Everywhere 🎃
In case you wanted more emoji in your posts, you now have 872 to choose from.
Emoji? What are they?
“Emoji” is a Japanese term meaning “picture character.” It’s a standard for showing smileys and other little symbols inside text. But unlike traditional smileys that are made up of a sequence of letters like :)
, every emoji has its own letter.
🌷 🌹 🌺 🌻 🌼
Emoji blossomed on smartphones, where quickly picking out an emoji is often faster than typing out a long sentence.
Today we’re rolling out hundreds and hundreds of emoji across WordPress.com — 872 to be exact.
Do they look familiar? That’s because Twitter has graciously decided to open-source their entire set, allowing anyone to use them. We’re already busy preparing to add these to Jetpack, so WordPress.org users can join in the fun too.
Before today, emoji you inserted into your posts on the go wouldn’t always show properly for all your visitors. While the nice little bunny (🐰) would show up fine when seen on your iPhone or Android, desktop visitors might just see a nondescript square:
Today’s launch means emoji will now show up properly on every device, no matter if it’s a smartphone, desktop, or tablet. Thanks, Twitter, we appreciate it! 💗
How do I use them?
Inserting emoji in your posts is most easily done on a smartphone or tablet, though it varies how smartphones let you do it. Here are instructions for Android and iOS.
If you’re antsy to insert new emoji from the comfort of your desktop, here are a couple of tricks:
- Mac users on Mavericks or newer can insert emoji by tapping
Command
+Control
+Space
while in a text editor. - Windows users on version 8 or newer have a special touch keyboard with emoji support (see instructions with pictures).
- Windows users on version 7 and below can copy/paste emoji from this cheat sheet.
Have fun with the new emoji!

:frog: I guess. This reminds me when I was 10 yrs. old: I kept a diary and wrote the entire diary in my own created alphabet of hieroglyphic code.
I gave up after 5 months: too much effort. 🙂

Being an emoji fan myself, I love this new edition! The only issue is that nothing happened when I pressed CMD+Ctrl+Space on my mac but when I copy/pasted from your post, that worked. Mac users have any tips?
Also, this post in the reader still shows the squares rather than actual emoji in comments.

Do you know what version of Mac OS you are using?
For versions prior to Mavericks, you can try Option + Command + T

Version is 10.6.8
I tried Option + Command + T and it pops up a characters window. Is that what I am supposed to get? They are more like special characters though.

The special characters menu is where Emoji was originally placed on the Mac, 10.6 is a bit older so I’m not sure if they had introduced them yet. Copy and paste from http://www.iemoji.com/emoji-cheat-sheet/all might be the best bet.
You can copy the character in the “empty” box and paste in a post or comment. The empty box is actually the emoji character, it just doesn’t show

Yes, copying/pasting works👍 . The square thing shows up in comments but in posts, it shows blank space unless your preview ur post lol. And here’s a snowman for u from the old characters for helping me out ☃ lol Thanks a lot! I ll bookmark that cheat sheet too. ✿

What do you need to do to install this feature?

If your site is on WordPress.com, it is supported by default. If you turned off the Settings to convert emoticons to graphics, that will disable emoji from displaying.
You can make sure it is set under Settings > Writing in your Dashboard.

I’m laughing since I was searching the site yesterday looking for the early emoji announcement. Hope we haven’t given up this one (WP) in the change. And just so you don’t think that emoji are all smilies, have a look at the cheat sheet! It can be a great :tools: set. :smile_cat:

This is good news! I use Windows 8 and I have been getting quite a few blank squares in my comments. A new follower once gave me four blank squares and I had no idea if she was being complimentary or rude! I am used to the emoticons of Skype, so I shall be looking for the squirrel! Thanks for making WP even more fun. 🙂

They also adapted this on IMDB and the response was so negative hahaha! The people there were really mad that the older IMDB icons were being replaced by these new ones.
Such a different reception here, which is nicer. ❤

Hi there, what I was doing is copy/paste the symbols from this page http://character-code.com/pictograph-html-codes.php The symbols can even be used as menú navigation label, but fewer symbols are still shown as nondescript square.

@Marcus: The same code works on a blog and not in another. I use different themes in the two blogs; Academica –> it works Gridiculous Pro –> It doesn’t work
Why?
LikeLike
It should be relatively theme independent.
Check the Settings > Writing in your blog and make sure the Convert emoticons to graphics

Can you try the emoji again on your theme? We pushed a change out to hopefully fix it, there were minor formatting issues with some themes.
