Introducing: Comment Likes

You can now show commenters some love with our new feature.

I’m sure we’ve all experienced this — reading through a comment thread, and seeing a particularly well-written comment, whether it be informative, insightful, or just plain funny. You want to show the commenter that you appreciate their work, but don’t have a reply for them, so you just move on. Well, those days are over!

Comment Likes are now available on all WordPress.com sites. We’ve seen how much you enjoy Post Likes, and want to bring that kind of love to comments, too. When you enable Comment Likes on your site, you’ll see a small Like appear below all the comments on your site, just like this one.

You and all your readers can click it to show your appreciation!

If you prefer to read in the WordPress Android or iOS apps, we’re working hard to bring Comment Likes to both of them as well — stay tuned for upcoming releases.

To activate Comment Likes, head to Settings Sharing in your dashboard, or check out the Comment Likes support page. Don’t forget to show some love in the comment section below!

We’re investigating ways to bring this to Jetpack (it’s a little trickier than Post Likes), but we’ll be sure to let everyone know when it’s ready!

Another reason to love WordPress. The comments sections are often where real magic happens and community is built. Thanks for helping to enhance them!

cool I actually was reading some really well put comments by other people and wanted to like what they had to say, give credit where credit is due.

Here’s a bonus tip for everyone who reads the comments – you can also Like comments in your Notifications! It’s a great way to quickly Like comments if you get lots of them!

Okay but, so, what was the hat/beard trick then?

I turned the feature on and already had some ‘likes’ registered within five minutes of reading about this feature.

    G’day Gary,
Thank you, I can see the benefit of this, albeit took me a while being a newby, but it’s all a learning romp 🙂

That’s great! Sometimes you just need to “Like” a comment 😉

When you like something on Facebook, you’ll be notified of further updates or comments to that post. Does this work in a similar faction? If I like a comment, will I be notified of replies to that comment?

Liking a comment doesn’t subscribe you to a comment thread.

As with other methods of subscribing (clicking a blog subscribe button, or subscribing to a thread when making a comment), we want users to be able to actively decide to subscribe, rather than having it forced upon them.

That’s a nice addition. Sometimes, I put a lot of effort into a comment and it would be nice to have it appreciated 🙂

I’ve always hoped this feature would come along. Now, what about having our “most liked” comments recive higher ranking, making them auto featured at the top of the comments section? A lot of news sites do that. Also, would be cool to allow readers to choose how comments are displayed for them, such as “oldest on top”, “newest on top” or “most liked”?
Keep up the great work! I love WP!

Thanks for the suggestions! We’ll definitely be looking at ways we can use Likes to show more interesting content to your readers!

This may be completely unrelated, BUT I am now receiving emails every time someone likes a comment I made. I cannot find a way to turn this off. :/

This may be a silly question, but… is this a new feature? Because I’m pretty sure I’ve been using this for a few weeks. Either way, it doesn’t really matter because I love it!! 😉 thanks WP!

It’s a new feature, but we’ve been enabling parts of it over the last month or so – good work on spotting it in the wild before it was completely launched! 🙂

How about like by emoticon. Sometimes comments are great. Sometimes comments are more than a little blue. Sure the blog owner can moderate, but maybe someone else would like to express and opinion other than just “like.” Maybe the comment was AWESOME!

After all these comments… I just turn out to be not creative enough to get any LIKEs.
Please quailify my statement as Sarcastic and LIKE the comment.

Aaaand… this is exactly why I am SO glad I just switched over to wordpress from the uneventfull other norwegian blogplatform I am moving out from. Features like this, amongst other features I have discovered WP has plenty of, is making blogging fun again. I am still tweaking my blog in here, but everything in WP I have discovered so far, has such a qualitystamp on it, I realize I have been missing out all this time. Thanks! I will remember this feature, I really like it. (no pun intended. Wait, who am I kidding. Yes, pun.)

Very cool! This is great for when you love what someone has said, but you can’t think of a good response or there is no real reason for a response.

This is great – I’ve been using it on my blog for a month or two now and it’s a nice way to acknowledge the last comment in a thread, or to add a “me too” to someone else’s comment if you don’t have anything new to say.

I won’t say I’ve seen huge amounts of activity (and still about the same number of proper comments) but the clicks here and there are worth it.

Can this be turned off in the notifications? I get plenty of notifications already, and now there are also likes of my comments, which I really don’t need to know.

This is a good idea! Sometimes people struggle putting into words how much they ‘like’ or ‘enjoy’ a post, which does sound strange given we’re all on WordPress 🙂 However the ‘like’ is a nice and quick way to show a blogger/writer some love, express kudos, etc.
