Responsive Themes: Gridspace and Just Desserts

This week, we’ve highlighted the responsive themes on WordPress.com. In our Theme Showcase, we have more than 50 responsive themes designed to provide a tailored layout depending on which device you’re using.

Today, two of our premium themes with responsive layouts are in the spotlight: Gridspace and Just Desserts.

Gridspace

Living in Saskatchewan, Canada, photographer Lyle Krahn is inspired by the wilderness around him. Exploring in his jeep and armed with a long lens, he spends hours looking for wildlife and capturing the perfect moment in nature. With Gridspace, Lyle showcases images on his front page in a clean and professional portfolio-style format.

Just like the other themes we’ve highlighted this week, Gridspace adapts to different screen sizes. This premium theme showcases vertical, horizontal, or square images. If you poke around on Lyle’s front page, you can toggle between two views — a list and a grid (as shown above) — by clicking the small square icons on the top right. Other customizable features include retro, dark, and light color styles; a custom header and background; four widget areas; and social icons. With Gridspace, your photography looks stellar on any screen.

Just Desserts

“As you will see through projects that we share, the apple may not fall far from the tree, but it can certainly roll far off in its own direction.” That’s a line from the About page of craft blog Big A, Little A, created by a DIY mother-daughter duo (hence the cute, clever blog name). They have fun making and creating, from sweets to savories and knitted gifts to paper ornaments, and Just Desserts complements their work well.

A stylish premium theme originally launched for food bloggers, Just Desserts offers a clean layout to display both text and photographs — no matter your niche — and ensures your blog looks great no matter what device you’re using. You can also choose one of six designer-suggested accent and link color palettes (or select your own), two headline fonts (Josefin Slab and Bree Serif), different front page options to display your posts’ images, and other customizable features. As you can see on Big A, Little A, a custom header looks fantastic, too.

For another example of Just Desserts, take a peek at So Sew Lovely. Veanna, a London-based architect and hobby sewist, shares her garment making and draping projects and step-by-step tutorials. The posts on her home page, each accompanied by a trio of image thumbnails, showcase her most recent content in an engaging way.

Go Mobile

We’ve talked this week about themes that look their best on all screen sizes, including mobile devices. You can enable a mobile theme on your own site in your dashboard by going to Appearance » Mobile. Check “yes” next to “Enable mobile theme” and click “Update.”
