Reblogging is Back!
As we mentioned last week, you can like and reblog posts directly from your reader, which displays a stream of all the updates published on all the blogs you follow from your WordPress.com account.
We’ve also brought the reblog button back to the toolbar that appears at the top of the screen when you’re logged into WordPress.com. Note that you’ll only see the like and reblog options while you’re looking at individual posts.
For example, you’ll see this on the left side of your toolbar while viewing https://wordpress.com/blog/2012/01/20/read-blogs:
And your toolbar will look like this while you’re browsing the home page of en.blog.wordpress.com:
How does reblogging work?
Reblogging is a quick way to share posts published by other WordPress.com users on your own blog. People have been reblogging others’ posts since blogging started, but our new reblogging system enables authors to retain greater control over their content.
When a post is reblogged, it shows up with a link back to the blog it came from, the first image in the post, an excerpt of the post’s introduction (if it contains text), and thumbnails of any other images that the post contains. It also shows any comments left by the person who reblogged the post:
Reblogs published on blogs you follow will also appear in your reader:
What happens when my posts get reblogged?
An excerpt of your post will be published on the reblogger’s site (with a link back to your original post), and you’ll receive a reblog notification in the post comments (you might need to approve it first):
You’ll also receive an email notification of the reblog.
Do I get credit when someone else reblogs one of my posts?
Absolutely! All reblogs contain a link back to your original post, so the more people reblog your posts, the more likely it is that you’ll attract new visitors (and perhaps new followers, too!).
What happens if I reblog a reblog?
If, for example, Stephane reblogs a WordPress.com announcement on his site and Lori reblogs Stephane’s reblog, Lori only re-publishes any comments Stephane made about the announcement. If Lori wants to share the original announcement, she should reblog the post from en.blog.wordpress.com, not from Stephane’s reblog. But if Stephane leaves a really clever comment, Lori might want to share it by reblogging his reblog on her site.
Can I edit a post I’ve reblogged?
You can go back and edit the comments you left when you reblogged a post, but you cannot edit any parts of the original post excerpt (including the post title). If you like, you can add categories or tags to the post. Reblogs show up under Posts → All Posts in your dashboard, and they can be edited the same way you edit your own posts.

IT’s intereseting to have this chance. But on the other hand – the stuff on my blog is not free – I have the copyright (Urheberrecht in German). What’s about that?

If you look at what reblogs look like, it’s just the same as if someone used Press This (or copy and paste) to quote your blog, except it has the added benefit of ensuring that all the links and credit go to you. It’s a better, more structured version of what people have been doing anyway, just with more protection and credit for you the original author.

I use the reblog feature on my Global A-Z to promote other bloggers taking part in “My Country A-Z” challenge. The reblog feature is great as I can quickly premote their posts as they appear on their blogs, or when they leave a link in comments. So simple it’s a win win. However, these are bloggers I know. If I was going to promote other bloggers posts I think I would write and ask their permission first.

I include a lot of images and metatags in my posts…if someone does a google image search whose blog shows up in the search? mine or the reblogger’s blog?? I would rather my blog show up in the search but it doesn’t..I know this because I did a search and discovered that my meta tags were showing up with my blog name in the google search but when you click on the link/image it takes you to a blog that reblogs everyone else’s blogs…my blog-my meta tags-should link back to my blog and not some low-end, profiteering, robber blog…

If people use the reblog feature per above, all the links (and search results) should go to your blog. If they were copy and pasting your content by hand they might have changed the links, which could cause the symptoms you describe. You should get in touch with the blogger and ask them to update their links to you, I think you’ll find they probably didn’t mean it maliciously. If they were using the reblog feature, it wouldn’t have happened in the first place.

From the WordPress.com Support section on Content Theft – What to Do:
Every day, bloggers are victimized (whether they are aware of it or not) by having their content stolen, scraped, and unlawfully copied. This is unfortunate, as we understand how much you value your personal content and hard work. When this happens, and the culprit is a member of WordPress.com, we take immediate action, ensuring that your content is rightfully protected.

Yep, our hope is that by giving people a one-click way to tell their audience about something interesting they found and sending all the traffic and links back to the original blogger that cases where people, knowingly or unknowingly, copy and pasted too much content will decline.

We’ve rebooted our concept of reblogging on WordPress.com, and we think we’ve brought some interesting improvements to the table, giving bloggers a cool way to share things that interest them while protecting authors of original content. Hi,
When you do a reblog, is there a sharing feature to twitter or facebook?
For example, when I do a quick post. the post will be automatic shared to facebook and twitter. I tried reblog by it seems that it does not share to twitter or facebook automatically?
Cheers

I would appreciate a way to opt-out of re-blogging. I work very hard on my content – from the photos I take to the words that I write – and I don’t see it as a positive thing when people “re-blog” me. The fact that it’s “only” a paragraph and that there are automatic links back to my blog don’t make much difference to me. I like my content to be on my blog – no where else, unless someone has asked permission.
When people sign up for Tumblr, they know what type of service it is and what they’re getting into – but when people create a blog on WordPress they expect to be respected and protected as the TOS tells us we will be.
Sorry to come off negative here but after private conversations with others, I can tell you I’m not alone in what I’m expressing here. I love WordPress in so many ways but this feature disappoints me.

We’ve gotten similar requests for turning of Likes, subscriptions, the reader, facebook/twitter login for comments… ultimately these things are intrinsic for the platform and it breaks the user experience and expectation if things that you expect to work for every site don’t. If you feel like someone is taking advantage of your content beyond fair use then please report it to our terms of service team and they’ll take a look at it.

I use my own photos on my blog, and I have a copyright notice on them. If someone reblogs my post, and doesn’t ask me if they can use my photo, isn’t his copyright violation?
LikeLike
It depends, this Wikipedia page covers copyright and what people can and can’t do with your content (in the United States) pretty well:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_use
Of course since you’ll get notifications now (you wouldn’t have before) you can always contact the blogger and ask them to take something down, I think you’ll find that 99.9% of bloggers would be happy to. (I know I would.)

This is my first look at the Reblogging function, and I have to say, I like it a lot. It makes it very simple to share posts I’ve enjoyed with all my followers; since my blog also connects to my Facebook and Twitter accounts, it also gets seen by all those folks. Thanks for the tip, and for making life easier for us newbies….

I’m not crazy about this. The reblogs include so much text that with short posts, they could be exceeding fair use. Also, in the case of photoblogs, for example, the image could, in fact, be the entire post. At the very least, please give administrators an option to disable the reblogging of their posts. I want readers to come to my blog to read my posts.

The excerpts are actually dynamic, right now they’re a maximum of 128 words but we’re experimenting the best way to intelligently excerpt content to give a good taste of it but ultimately drive people back to the original blog. I think you’ll find that reblogs will grow your audience quite a bit as it brings in people who may have never visit or seen your site otherwise.

I cannot believe you are encouraging this practice after your blacking out of Freshly Pressed in protest of SOPA. The real issue is protection of intellectual property; SOPA may have been flawed in its implementation but the intent was to protect content creators. What ever happened to the small effort of a short quote and a link to someone’s blog instead of wholesale theft through reblogging? I agree with Tracy above – give those of us who work hard on creating original content an opt-out button on this instead of facilitating a practice that encourages misuse of blogging content and makes me work to prevent it.

I do not think that quoting and linking to something is an issue of intellectual property. It’s 90% of what I do on my blog http://ma.tt/ — would you suggest that my blog should be taken down? 🙂
