Your Memories Take Center Stage with the New Photo Carousel

Photo galleries on WordPress.com are a great way to share the pictures you’ve taken with your friends, family, and your followers. But the design of your theme can limit how large your high-resolution photos are displayed. Today, we’re announcing a great new way to make the most of your photos: a full-size carousel view that presents your images as large as your display can contain them.

To experience the carousel, just click an image in a photo gallery on any WordPress.com blog. You can navigate between photos using the left and right arrow keys, or by clicking or tapping the arrows on the left and right. Click the Permalink below any image to see its attachment page or the image file directly, depending on how you setup your gallery. You can easily like a photo from the carousel, too. When you’re done, click anywhere in the background or press the Esc key on your keyboard to return to the thumbnails.

Check it out here, with this gallery of images taken by some of our colleagues during our recent meetup in Budapest.

Now, whether you’re using a tablet or a large desktop display, you’ll see photos in the best light possible. And the best part of all: if you’ve already been posting photo galleries on your WordPress.com blog, you’ll get the new full-screen carousel view without lifting a finger. If you haven’t posted your first gallery, there’s never been a better time to try!

Are you only allowing comments that are positive about this new feature??
Like I said – already – the feature is a good idea but why are you imposing it on every user?

I’m not a fan of this new Photo Carousel… =(
I worked so hard on my photoblog and now it changes everything…
    Besides it runs very slowly.

Is it possible to turn it off somehow????

Please allow an opt out feature. It does look very nice but it messes up a lot on my blog.

This looks great! Will photo galleries on older posts be updated, or will this only work on future posts? Thanks!

I’m one who uses detailed descriptions with pics in my photo gallery. I do love the opportunity to showcase the pieces in this new way but wonder how many visitors to WP will know what “permalink” means. Took me awhile to figure it out 😉 I definitely want to make it easy for visitors to see the descriptions easily, not just the captions. Thanks for your ongoing efforts to make things better for us all.

I really do hope that staff improve this carousel so that comments can be added to each image, and so that all the descriptions the administrator may have previously painstakingly added can be included- this is VITAL to many of us using the gallery setting as a means to promote our images, especially professional photographers and artists who do need these added features, please : )

I seem to be in the minority but I think it’s rubbish and the fact that it’s been imposed is totally shocking. My blog has six galleries and they look so ridiculous on this stupid Carousel I’ve had to take them off line. Surely, the author of a blog should decide how content its is displayed, and when changes like this are made they should be on an ‘opt in’ basis.

This new format has some advantages… only thing… now all my older galleries are not working as they should!! The captions don’t appear!! I’ll have to edit each photo individually… some schlep!!

Could you please look into writing code that can rectify this little matter… also, now one can’t enlarge a specific photo in the carousel…

I’m sure the gremlins will be sorted… I don’t want to start editing my galleries if the team is looking at resolving the issues…

    Thanks… I hope you can help!! 😉

How long before having a Jetpack version of this? I’d love to have it integrated with the React Pro theme I just purchased!
