Welcome Windows Live Spaces Bloggers

We’re excited to announce that WordPress.com is now the default blogging platform for Windows Live Spaces users. We’ve worked with our partners at Microsoft to create a simple migration service for Spaces bloggers to easily bring all their posts, comments, and photos to WordPress.com.

Over a six month period, beginning today, Windows Live Spaces users will have the option to move their blogs to WordPress.com. To make this possible, we’ve created a brand new importer for Windows Live Spaces to WordPress.com. New Windows Live users will also be offered a WordPress.com blog when they choose to create a new blog.

All current links to your Windows Live Spaces blog will automatically redirect to your new WordPress.com blog after you set it up. In addition, this redirect we’ve set up will maintain your current traffic levels from search engines, as it automatically notifies search engines that your content has a new home on WordPress.com (the technical background on the 301 redirect method we’re using, if you’re interested, is here).

As part of this project, we’ve added support for Messenger Connect as a Publicize option, which enables you to automatically share updates to your WordPress.com blog with your friends who use Windows Live Messenger.

For detailed information on how the migration will work, check out this post on the Windows Live blog.

We’re very happy that Microsoft chose WordPress.com as their preferred new blogging service for Windows Live users. It’s a sign of how strong WordPress.com has become, and credit for that goes to every one of you who’s been creating here.

    Hi,
I just moved from space to wordpress.
For space, I set only several friends in msn could access to it. But now, how could I do the same thing?

Now I set my wordpress to be private but I want the same friends to be able to visit it.
However seems I can only set wordpress memembers! My friends they don’t have an ID in wordpress…
    Help me out, pls~

I find this process very cumbersome. Not everyone wants a million bells and whistles nor does everyone have all day to comb all the Help Info. Simplify my life, please!

At least let user know how can their friend access their blog in the future. This is the most critical and simply question, but spent the whole day cannot find the answer.

Bloggers from Windows Live be aware of the following fact. Not only your photo albums but also your friends will not be migrated. You need to let them register a wordpress account and add them into user list one by one. Although they already have 100+ accounts and passwords. Don’t tell me that you have 100+ friends, sorry only 35 could be added freely. Want more , please pay!

I’ve witnessed Windows Live Spaces slowly alienate their user base with changes that no one asked for. Not only that, they carried on ‘Improving’ things when no one asked. They had the formula about right back in 2007. After that it was nothing but down hill. The last nail in the coffin for me was the character limit in the comment box section. Their blatant imitation of Myspace and then Facebook just sapped the WLS site of Its originality and made it a 5th rate version of Facebook, maybe not even that. I seriously hope the people at Wordpess will listen to their user base before making any drastic changes in the interest of competition and income.

Luckily I’d already ventured over to WordPress via a blogger friend in antisipation of WLS’s being unusable for me, that actually happend sooner than I thought but I persisted. Early this year I set my account up on WordPress and was a little overwhelmed and still was untill I had my WLS contents transfered over. The help from the WordPress blogs (ones I couldn’t find before) were straight forward and very helpful! Now I’m gearing up to make WordPress my main blogging platform. I still do use Myspace, but after seeing what they offered up for the rebranding and on the site itself, I think it may just fail. Maybe Myspace will pass all Its users over to WordPress this time next year?
