New Theme: Structure

Sometimes you want your blog to look a little more structured. To help with that, I’m happy to introduce to you today the Structure theme: a multi-column theme with featured images, an alternate dark color scheme, and customization options.

The Structure theme highlights the latest post from your choice of featured category

Structure highlights your latest post—from a featured category of your choice—by displaying the title in beautiful Georgia Italic and highlighting the featured image alongside a special front page widget area.

Did you see the Twitter and Facebook icons in the header? They’ll appear when you add your Twitter and Facebook URLs in Appearance→Theme Options.

And the ordered multi-column layout and high-contrast style of Structure is flush with style.

The 3-column home page

Structure switches to a two-column layout for posts and pages that ensures your carefully crafted content takes top priority for your readers.

2 columns for your posts and pages

I know you’ll like Structure’s drop-down menus and four footer widget areas but I think you’ll really love the customization options. With an alternate dark color scheme, custom header option, and custom background option, you can really make this theme your own. I’ve gone ahead and made a simple example of just that.

The dark color scheme with custom header and background

The Structure theme is available today in your WordPress.com dashboard and, for self-hosted WordPress.org users, from Organic Themes.

Update: If you need help setting the Featured Image for a post, read our tutorial on Featured Images.

Another great theme! I tried it out However…the huge centered featured post title, the tiny font for text, and the super-gigantic font for the block quotes (I mean super) are a deal breaker for me.

My wish is for a 3 column white front page similar to this with new groovy features but a wider writing area, black serif font, and maybe an option to have two columns on the same side (like Grid focus but more stylish and updated) or either side with a wider post page like this one.

How will the featured image on the last 3 new themes transfer when you change to a new theme in the future?

It depends on how large the original featured images when they were uploaded, before they were cropped. The larger the better as they’ll likely work great for all our themes that use this feature. Otherwise, you may have to replace or re-upload some featured images.

      Great question, Sandra.

Nice Theme! Would’ve preferred if there was an option to choose the size of the feature image. Sometimes the feature post’s image gets pixellated when it is too small 😦

As an aside, would it be possible for you to include a ‘New-to-Old’ or ‘Old-to-New’ type of filter in the Themes page? Currently there’re just the ‘Random’, ‘A-Z’ and ‘Popular’ filters and finding the latest theme among them is a tad trickier…especially if you don’t recall the just-released theme name

(can you blame us? You’ve been swamping us users with new themes nowadays  )

My apologies! I know this is the second time I’ve done this one this new theme, but I did really and truly get it figured out this time! I was trying to set the featured image on the page edit, but since the page is designated as where all my new posts go I had to set the featured image on the post that is featured.

Seriously this is a great theme. thanks so much for this. I’m done bugging you now, I promise!

Thank you and congratulations on some stellar work. This is the fourth new WordPress theme in less than 10 days! Each one making me smile and cheer as we WordPress.com fans finally get some of the quality design that was hitherto only being seen on self-hosted blogs. These new designs are really contemporary, not just like the old days where you had to tolerate so-so themes for the one-in-five that was so inspired that, in turn, it inspired you and made you want to create a new blog just so that you could use it! Every one of these last four themes is a stunner. To be fair the last half dozen or so themes have all been in a different creative/conceptual/technical league to 2007/8/9 and it makes me wonder what has changed at WordPress? It’s all definitely getting better. (Whatever it is you are all drinking, I want some too!) Excellent work. Keep it up. And thank you again.

I love so much about this… except the Georgia Italics font… which wouldn’t be so bad but I’m afraid I don’t know much about CSS… and I’m really new to wordpress so I’m not sure how easy it is to change this… is it as easy as subscribing to a typekit font or is what I’m suggestion (tinkering with the fonts) something that MUST be done in CSS?

Sorry for what I’m sure is an obvious noob question 😉

tried this out, almost stuck to it, but there’s a few things I’d need changed if I were to use it:
    a) the fonts, the all caps of the post-titles
    b) featured posts could be turned off? somehow tends to confuse my readers
    c) the three columns is a bit unnecessary for some, but I guess this theme is for those who’ve got a lot of widgets

it still looks pretty sweet though!
might change to this sometime in the future (:

My god, I remember being wow’d by this theme when I first came across it. Never in a million years would I have expected it to pop up for free users here. I’ve stayed away from commiting to WordPress.com because of the lack of properly designed themes (grid focus, good typography etc, readability etc) but wow nice job on getting this on board.

Kudos WordPress.com, these past few weeks you’ve been unreal 😀

Structure takes advantage of the new Featured Image module in the Edit Post screen to add featured images to posts. Clicking “Set featured image”, uploading an image or choosing one from your media library, and clicking “Use as featured image”, will allow you to set a featured image for your post.

      I hope that helps!

@lorettavanderhorst – you need to set the featured image in the post that is being featured.
Go to the edit page for the featured post (which is in large grey italics at the top of the home page) and look for the “Set featured image” link – usually at the bottom of the right column.

This theme is really good but I just have one problem though, like others – the “Featured Picture”. I doesn’t show anything on it. Just a gray box there. I also hope that there is a way to enable theme options without enabling the featured post.

Using the new Featured Image module in the Edit Post screen to select a featured image for the latest post in your featured category will replace that gray square with the image of your choice.

I love this theme! It’s so clean yet sophisticated. Definitely the best one WordPress offers right now. I was working on coding a custom theme, but now I don’t have/want to!

It took a while to figure out how to change the big image in the header and for those of you that haven’t figured it out: you have to have set a featured category under theme options, make a post under that category, and select a featured image for that post. Bit of a labyrinth, and I do wish the image was a bit smaller or could be resized, but very neat anyway!
