The Wizard of Oz talkboard madness
The Southbank Centre's summer musical, Jude Kelly's production of The WIzard of Oz, hasn't convinced the pundits. As I pointed out in my review last week, the show is just too long, and despite the best efforts of a strong cast, they are fighting a losing battle with a show that doesn't replicate the excitement of the original film.

Unfortunately, it appears that problems have been compounded by some publicity that they really could have done without... after the show received a bit of pasting on the What's On Stage talkboards, some of theatre's employees decided to add some positive comments. The Observer picked up the story here, and What's On Stage wrote their own response, which you can see here.

There is no suggestion that the producers asked employees to do this - it looks more likely that a couple of people forgot to engage their brains before acting. I doubt they'll make the same mistake again!

Neil Simon - still funny or looking dated?
They're Playing Our Song had its first night this week, and seems to be gathering mixed reviews. The negatives seem to have centred on the material itself, rather than the production of the cast.

There wasn't complete agreement though - I was rather amused to see the difference of opinions between the Telegraph and the Guardian on this one...

Michael Billington in the Guardian thinks that "the show's smartest feature is Neil Simon's book." Unfortunately, Paul Taylor of the Independent disagrees, instead suggesting that "the book is by Neil Simon at his most mechanical. As you listen to the non-stop barrage not-so-cracking wisecracks, it's the other meaning of "gag" to which the mind fondly strays."

Personally, I like it when critics disagree, especially over something like this... on this occasion, I think the truth is somewhere in between!

David Tennant is actually good - now there's a surprise
A couple of months' back, Dr Jonathan Miller was spouting off to anyone that would listen about the problems with celebrity casting. Unfortunately, he was rapidly discredited as a result of him picking the wrong targets... he used the example of David Tennant, "that man from Doctor Who".

Plenty of people came to Tennant's defence, pointing out that he is a well-respected, classically-trained actor, who worked at the RSC long before he came to the public's attention as Doctor Who.

The time has come to see if Tennant deserved the criticism, and judging by the byline to Michael Billington's review in today's Guardian, Dr Miller's words now look even more ludicrous... "David Tennant is the best Hamlet in years". Within the review itself, he goes onto write:

"This is a Hamlet of quicksilver intelligence, mimetic vigour and wild humour: one of the funniest I've ever seen."

So, apparently David Tennant actually is rather a good actor...

Is West Side Story really that good?
I absolutely adored West Side Story when I saw it at Sadler's Wells last week (see my review here in case you're wondering).  The show has also received very impresive reviews from almost all of the major national newspapers (see here and here for a couple of examples).

The fact I loved it probably had something to do with the fact that I consider it to be the greatest piece of musical theatre ever written. Whilst I suspect I'm not on my own in holding this view, I read an interesting article in the Guardian this week which dared to question how great the show it...

So, a thought for today to leave you with - Is West Side Story really as good as I think it is?

As far as the Wall-O-Shame goes, people who are put on there are put there for a reason. Someone will not be put on there because a fellow nestie doesn't like something that was said. We may have made a mistake by asking for nominations, so that won't be happening anymore.  Suggestions and comments are still welcome, but trying to bully people on the board by saying they'll be nominated is bull shit.  so that's where we stand with that.

Elke week hebben we een persuurtje met het college van B&W. Soms is dat spannend en gezelig, soms ook niet. Ik denk dat het van het weer afhangt. Vandaag barstte er een gesprek los over wippen, wipkippen en de daarbijbehorende rubber tegels. Nu heb ik die rubber tegels altijd een beetje onzin gevonden want kinderen mogen best eens flink vallen als ze zich idioot gedragen maar goed. Aan het afloop van de discussie kon ik het niet nalaten om te zeggen "Waar gewipt wordt, hoort rubber in de buurt te zijn".  Waar een mens zich druk om maakt!

Maak ik me nergens druk om? Ja zeker wel. Ik maak me druk om de vreemdsoortige manier waarop gemeenten tegenwoordig met subsidies omgaan. Een subsidie-aanvraag wordt getoetst aan de doelstellingen van het college van B&W. Dat is het gevolg van de eisen die de rijksoverheid stelt aan subsidieregelingen. Elke cent moet verantwoord kunnen worden. Tot op het bot.

Gemeentebesturen gaan er nu van uit dat subsidies alleen verstrekt kunnen worden aan organisaties waarvan de doelstellingen in lijn zijn met het collegebeleid. Ik vind dat onverteerbaar. Gemeenten horen subsidie te geven om het maatschappelijk leven te ondersteunen, niet om de eigen hobby's te bevoordelen. Als toetsteen geldt de maatschappelijke behoefte aan een activiteit of een organisatie, niet de politieke wenselijkheid. O ja, de politieke onwenselijkheid kan wel een criterium zijn want we willen geen organisaties steunen die uit zijn op de ondergang van de samenleving.

Dat het lokale bestuur probeert alle neuzen in dezelfde richting te krijgen, is volslagen onacceptabel. Stel dat bij de verkiezingen 60 procent van de kiezers op komt dagen. Daarvan stemt een ruime meerderheid, 70 procent, voor de collegepartijen. Dat is dus 42 procent van alle kiezers in de gemeente. Daarvan maakt driekwart gebruik van de voorzieningen die de gemeente subsidieert. Dat wil zeggen dat een kleine 32 procent alle subsidiegelden opsoepeert. Juist bij overheidssubsidies is dat onacceptabel.

De overheid behoort subsidies te geven om het vrie maatschappelijke leven te ondersteunen. dast is van belang voor ieders creativiteit en persoonlijke of groepsgewijze ontwikkeling. Als de overheid de doelstellingen van organisaties langs de meetlat van haar eigen ambities legt, raakt dat de grenzen van de dictatuur, van de totalitaire staat en van de gelijkschakeling. De mensen wordt een WOS (Wonderbaarlijk Onverteerbare Subsidieregelig of ook wel Wet Overheidsbemoeienis Subsidies voorgehouden en zij denken dat het een worst is. Het scheelt maar twee letters en wie niet zo goed luistert, merkt het verschil niet. Tja, uiteindelijk komt het toch weer op het vermogen tot luisteren neer. Luisteren is moeilijk als je je oren alleen maar naar geld laat hangen.

So we went to Plaza Singapura (PS) on Saturday to shop at the World of Sports outlet.

Was browsing around and asked a staff for help to get a pair of comfortable walking shoes.

He was extremely professional in giving advice, selecting and bringing us various shoes and sizes. And very warm.

Sometimes you just know when it's service direct from the heart.

When I was trying out a pair of running shoes for myself, he even showed me a new way to tie my laces for better grip and comfort.

Je sais que je sers un peu de bouche trou avec le départ de Leng et Rad mais il faut voir les choses en face, avoir une team c'est mieux que de ne pas en avoir quand on a envie de participer à des compétitions. Ils ont besoin de joueurs donc je vais jouer souvent dans une équipe capable de faire de bonnes perf. En espérant ne pas trop tapper du pied à chaque match comme kiram lors d'un match qui restera gravé dans nos mémoires de joueurs de lans. Mon objectif est clair (je pense que c'est celui de la team aussi, enfin j'espère) : marquer plein de points eswc pour avoir un seed correct à Bercy où le vrai challenge nous attend.

A instalação é bem simples, basta descompacta os aquivos de wosportable.zip em seu pen-drive, depois abra o diretório onde foi descompactado os arquivos e click no arquivo wos.exe, depois click no botão instalar, agora basta esperar alguns minutos e pronto, ao término da intalação o mysql e apche são iniciados.

Auto start
Esta opção só funcionará caso não possua outras pasta ou arquivos no seu drive.
Abra o bloco de notas e coloque estes linhas abaixo.

No któżby inny niźli ja...

I jak zwykle nie obywa się (jestem w trakcie montażu) bez problemów.

Najpierw kamera odmawiała posłuszeństwa. Trzeba było oddać informatykom, żeby wydarli filmy z jej dysku twardego (:D).

Kiedy już to było załatwione, trzeba było konwertować pliki mpg na avi, bo Linuksowy Kino mpg-ów nie obsługuje. Nawet po konwersji, Kino okazał się bezradny wobec filmów do edycji. Wtedy to, ze względu na brak czasu, musiałem przełknąć swoją dumę i włączyć M$ Winzgrozę.

Nadszedł moment, dla którego jedynie trzymam jeszcze Win na dysku. Moment w którym przez niezgodność typów, brak czasu czy jakikolwiek inny czynnik będę skazany na pomocną dłoń z Redmond...

Po uruchomieniu od dawna nieużywanego Windowsa XP, doznałem szoku... Pierwsza myśl-"Jak ten system mógł mi się kiedyś podobać!?". Pixeloza, sztywne, brzydkie okna, idiotyczne kolory i ta genialna funkcjonalność. No nic, przemogłem się jakoś i zabrałem się do pracy z Movie Makerem.

Wszyscy, którzy tak jak ja, mieli okazję wypróbować WinXP w 2001 roku, pamiętają zapewne funkcjonalność tego programu... Faktycznie, w pierwszej wersji program potrafił się nagle wyłączyć i całą pracę "pioruny łogniste, siarczyste" i uwalnianie zajętej przez program pamięci RAM wspólnymi siłami trawiły zostawiając użytkownika w stanie bliskim desperacji. Można śmiało powiedzieć, że teraz jest lepiej. Owszem, bugi są. Nawet niemało. Z programem można już jednak mniej  lub bardziej współpracować.

Sama współpraca z programem, to jednak nie wszystko. Jest przecież jeszcze system działający w tle. A ten zdawał się działać zupełnie odwrotnie do moich poleceń...

Dla przykładu:

Kiedy go uruchomiłem, kazał się wyłączyć (uruchom ponownie, aktualizacje).

Kiedy uruchomiłem odtwarzanie filmu, odtwarzanie zatrzymało się i nie chciało ruszyć dalej.

Kiedy uruchomiłem Windows Movie Makera, ten się nie uruchomił (musiałem zabić proces).

I tym podobne....

No i oczywiście, na każdym kroku z ekranu aż cieknie komercja. Dla przykładu zapisywanie gotowego filmu w Movie Makerze... Zgadnijcie jaki format? No jakiżby inny, jak nie WMV! A jest przecież tyle LEPSZYCH alternatyw....

Trzymajcie za mnie kciuki - wojuję dalej. Dzień sądu, pokaz premierowy już we czwartek...
