It's probably not the best idea in the world to drink and blog. I might say all sorts of unnecessary things that could later get me into trouble. I don't give a shit at this point, I'm on my second glass of Reisling from Oliver Winery, which by the way is probably my third favorite wine and is an even tie with their Camelot Mead. The first favorite being Oliver's Ice Wine, which is a "holidays only" purchase as it costs about $50 per bottle. The second favorite is the Blackberry wine from Mountain Valley Winery in Pigeon Forge, TN. I'm not by any means your typical wine snob, I don't go to events or tasting parties, I just sit at home and drink wine. I've been known to polish off multipule bottles by myself, stumbling around in the dark at home...drunk on mead, calling my husband on his cellphone and annoying him while he's at work. It's not drinking alone if your best friend is on webcam with you, and she's drinking too...right?

I am now on my third glass of Riesling, there are two glasses left in the bottle, and as Justin can't drink more than one glass because of his stomach, it is my responsibility to finish the bottle (which was opened during dinner tonight)

Justin puts up with my overindulgence in wine mostly because I enjoy giving head when I've been drinking. Not only do I enjoy giving head when I've been drinking, apparently wine greatly enhances my cock sucking abilities.

Actually, the entire point of this blog tonight is to document what was said in the car tonight on our way home from the movie theater, we went to watch The Dark Knight.

Justin asked me what we were doing tonight,

I replied that my plans for the evening were to drink wine, get lit, and suck his cock.

His reply to this, was delivered in the most monotonous tone, "we can do that"

This was very funny to me.

And so, I'm going to finish this bottle of delicious Riesling, then give my husband a blowjob.

Good night everybody :)

OK, picture your first wine tasting club event.

You’ve got a about twelve friends and acquaintances who all like a good wine. Not to many people, it’s more fun when it’s intimate

You’ve got five or six wines for comparison, based on a theme (local Pinot Noir, heavy reds, whatever) for the wine tasting. One bottle of wine can easily be poured in small amounts for twelve people.

You’ve got nibbles and hors d’oeuvres cheeses and crackers are a good choice, but go for whatever is interesting. Antipasto style dishes can make it more ‘gourmet’

You’ve got pens and scoring sheets (link) for each person, and bags to disguise the wine labels.

You’ve got an extra bottle or two for relaxing afterwards

That’s it. That’s really all you need. I’ve done it and it was really simple, but I have nice friends, which helps.

Helpful tip: The Swill Wine Tasting Club Starter Kit gives you everything you need, including: step-by-step instructions for how to get set up, wine rating cards, wine bags to disguise the bottles, and more. You could do all the running around to gather supplies, but why go to all that trouble? Click here to order the Swill kit now online and your wine tasting party will be a breeze, and a total success.

Enjoy! Peter

My friend Oleg is always saying things like: “men like us, we can do little more than coax the coals while the world goes up in flames.” There’s my voice of moderate conservatism! In the summer nights we drink wine and eat cheese on crackers out on his deck. He explains to me the important principles of fermentation as an art: “Wine, cheese, and beer all rely on a bacterial culture to produce what we come to love in the end result. The production, that’s not our work, but what we can do is closely monitor the variables and see the subtle changes that they make on the cheese or wine. In wine making the age and colour of the grapes, the type of wood barrel they are stored in, if they are stored in a wood barrel at all, and how long we allow the fermentation are the things that concern us, the craftsman.” The back deck of his house was bordered with various herbs required for Russian folk-remedies. “The price of wine doesn’t really reflect how good it will taste to the uncultured palate. There was a bottle I was looking at last autumn, it cost thirty-nine dollars, but it was very bitter, even to me. Some kind of fluke happened to this batch, and if you search for it you’ll find a delicate hint of orange in the aftertaste. It’s quite impressive when you think about it. I buy this wine in bulk at $4.50 a bottle.”

I dreamed of Oleg last night. The bars were closing. Crowds flooded onto Toronto's gum spotted streets, bathed in the hallucinatory red glow from Zanzibar’s flashing sign. The sewer lid popped loudly like a champagne cork, flying straight into the air for a few seconds before being knocked aside by the midnight blue monstrosity that flew after it. Tearing down the streets and across the sky was the long serpentine body of what could only be described as a dragon, its magnificent scales glistened in the toxic combination of sewer water and city lights. With sudden movements like the licks of a dancing candle flame it snapped at the buildings, knocking large chunks of concrete from their foundation to the streets below. Right there, hanging onto the tail dearly with both his arms was my friend Oleg in his cowboy hat, laughing like an in-patient off his meds. I’m fairly sure the velocity put out his cigar.

Ok, I know I haven't done a blog post in over a month, what can I say, August was busy and I just got back from a fantastic trip to visit my sister in Quebec City (I should be editing the 1000 or so pictures I took, but this seems less daunting)

So as far as wines go, I've tried quite a few in the last month but I didn't take specific notes on each wine. Anyway, here's a rundown of some of the wines we tried:

Lindeman's "Cawarra" Semillon Chardonnay (2006, Australia, $10.45, MLCC) : Easy drinking white wine. Simple, entry level, nothing complex but good on a hot day. Not heavy and oaky. I would drink this again.

Michel Torino Malbec Rose (2007, Argentina $9.23, MLCC) : It was ok, slight rose petal aroma, but not much of it... pretty tight even after it warmed up a bit. Thought it was a little flabby. It would have been better if it had a little more acid or a little more sweetness. Being right in the middle made it seem lifeless. I probably wouldn't buy the 2007, but I might try the 2008.

Conquista Malbec (2006, Argentina, $10.88, MLCC) : This was a nice simple entry level Malbec that is a great value wine!!! Not to heavy, but nice ripe fruit. I would buy this again. In fact it might be my new budget Malbec of choice.

Conquista Reserve Malbec (2005, Argentina, $14.92, MLCC) : The reserve Conquista was also very nice but had a LOT more oak on the nose. I would buy this again too.

Aveleda Vinho Verde (2006, Portugal, $9.95, MLCC) : A fantastic light white wine for a hot day... probably not having too many of those any more this year. I had this one a few times this past month (and in Quebec) and I would buy it again for sure. It was crisp with good acid and yet almost had a hint of sweetness. It also has a hint of sparkle to it, which helps make it so refreshing on a hot day.

Ironstone Vineyards Symphony "Obsession" (2006, California, $11.89, MLCC) : This is a wine made from the little known Symphony grape. It is a very easy drinking wine that is on the sweet side. I remember we had this on our wine night as almost a dessert/palate refresher after a big meal and a big Malbec. It was perfectly refreshing with a bit of sweetness. To me at the time it reminded me of Lemon Meringue pie.

Folie a Deux "Menage a Trois" (2006, California, $18.96, MLCC) : This was a delicious red wine from California that is a blend of Zinfandel, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. It wasn't overly sweet but was full of jammy berry flavours from the Zinfandel but still had the structure and tannin from the Cab. Everyone at our wine part really enjoyed this wine and it was pretty easy drinking on it's own. I would buy it again.

Anyway, that's a few of them... I'll try to take better notes in September and do more updates.

Well I gotta run for tonight, but I'll try to have an August Restaurant Recap up soon too. And even though BBQ season is almost over I have a killer beer can chicken recipe to post too. I've made it a couple times now and it rocks! Stay tuned...

Cheers,

Brian

Cru Vin Dogs Wine Releases Limited-Edition Golden Retriever Chardonnay to Benefit Morris Animal Foundation Dog Research

The Golden Retriever, one of the most popular dogs in the United States, also is the number one breed to die of cancer, with more than 60 percent dying of this dreaded disease. Now, drinking fine wine can help this breed and others fight canine cancer.

Cru Vin Dogs Wine Group, a Denver-based wine company, has released its 2006 Golden Retriever Chardonnay to benefit Morris Animal Foundation's (MAF) Canine Cancer Campaign. MAF's Canine Cancer Campaign is a global research effort to cure canine cancer in the next 10 to 20 years, while also developing new treatments for dogs suffering from cancer today.

Cru Vin Dogs donates a minimum of 10 percent of its revenue to three canine charities, including MAF. In 2007 the company also donated $10,000 to MAF for canine health research.

"Dogs are the foundation upon which we are building our brand, and we're delighted to be partnering with Morris Animal Foundation to support this very important research effort," said Cru Vin Dogs President Mary Snellgrove. "In addition to our financial contributions, we hope to help raise awareness of the work that is being done on behalf of dogs and dog lovers everywhere."

The Golden Retriever Chardonnay label is a limited-edition, pastel pencil illustration by artist Jay P. Snellgrove. This dry wine blends Dijon selections of Chardonnay to create a rich, honeyed texture with touches of pear, toasted almonds and Meyer lemon. The cost is $16/bottle with a 10 percent discount on orders of 12 or more bottles. Also available are hand-signed and numbered Golden Retriever puppy illustrations, long-sleeved, white cotton T-shirts ($30) and blank note cards (package of six for $10). Cru Vin Dogs wines are available online and at restaurants and specialty wine shops in the Denver area and northern California.

The white burgundy wines are the utmost popular trend of Indians. Chardonnay the world's most legendary white wine is now making each and every party stylish. The recognition of this wine has immensely grown within the span of last forty years.

The Chardonnay is a pocket friendly and reasonably priced wine. It has the perfect blend with Indian taste buds and food. It can go best with poultry, red meat and cheese dishes.

Indian wine lovers have chardonnay as their foremost choice, as it has a wide variety of flavours like sweet, sour, heady or mild. The typical flavours are apple, lemon, melon, lime and oak. The taste of chardonnay mostly depends upon its fermentation and cropping style.

On the contrary, the world's most expensive and popular dessert wine Sauvignon Blanc is now the ideal choice of rich Indians. This wine was earlier most desired wine of Americans and people preferred to have this in sweet style.

It has a sharp and aggressive smell, which distinguishes this wine from others. Through barrel fermentation process, there is a possibility to modify the aroma of Sauvignon Blanc.

Sauvignon in dry style is very versatile and has perfect ‘Chemistry' with foods prepared with tomatoes, bell peppers, raw garlic, smoked cheeses and other tangy flavours that would spar many Chardonnays and mostly all the other dry whites. Sauvignon Blanc is certainly the best dry white wine, which can be served with the greatest variety of Indian foods.

My gourmet friends will cringe when they read this. Wine enthusiasts and snobs will roll their eye

My gourmet friends will cringe when they read this. Wine enthusiasts and snobs will roll their eyes.

I've been on a white wine kick lately. Probably because of the summer months. Whether it be roses, pinot grigios, chardonnays, champagnes, prosecco, cava, sauvs, etc. Lately, more like the last couple of years, I've been trying out various viogniers. According to Wiki, 'Viognier(vee-ohn-yay) is a white wine grape. It is the only permitted grape for the French wine Condrieu in the Rhone valley.'

There are some popular french Viogniers readily available here in the US, Jaboulet Les Jumelles was the first one I tried. California's Bridlewood makes an awesome Viognier, not as heavy as the french variety. Viognier is good with spicy, heavier foods like Thai or Vietnamese. The wine is not sweet (thank goodness). Try it sometime. Although I wouldn't cook with it (too good for that).

So my guilty pleasure is a glass of viognier and bacon. Honestly. The saltiness of the bacon really goes well with the viognier and there is no empty, metallic after-taste with the wine after eating something salty.

I was at L.'s house one day and she was frying up bacon to add to a salad. We had a heavier white and then moved on to prosecco. And of course, she made extra bacon for us to munch on. I thought what an excellent pairing.

A man, forty-five-ish, boarded my bus last night sporting khakis, a blue raincoat, and a Spiderman

A man, forty-five-ish, boarded my bus last night sporting khakis, a blue raincoat, and a Spiderman umbrella. This umbrella was serious, with Spiderman-themed fabric and a tiny, plastic, Spiderman handle.

There are two options:

(a) The man has children, including a Spido-fan. These children pile their umbrellas in a heap next to the door. As he was running out into the rainstorm, in a rush to make his appointment, the man grabbed the first umbrella he could find. Spidobrella.

(b) The man loves Spiderman.

On the bus, I rooted for (a), for the man's sake. What if he was off to a business dinner with that umbrella? "Heavens, don't let it be so!" I pleaded.

But say he just likes Spiderman and all associated gear. Would that be so bad? Most fun things are off-limits to adults, who have to trade in tree-climbing and licking the brownie batter off the spoon for art museums and wine. Adults go to art museums and drink wine often enough to convince themselves they like it, but the thrill is more in showing all the other adults how adult they are than in the activities themselves. Who deemed comic books and brownie batter kid things, anyway? Picture a world of fifty-year-olds trolling the streets with Dora the Explorer backpacks and lollipops in their hands. Who doesn't want to grow up now?

What can I say about my favorite Merlot? It has been by my side through many occasions. It is us

What can I say about my favorite Merlot? It has been by my side through many occasions. It is usually the only redeemable part of most meals I serve up. While the food rests nearly untouched on the plate, my dinner guests are at least content in refilling their glasses a second (or a third...) time. Robert Mondavi's merlot can pass as a great, though inexpensive option for a casual dinner, or be effectively tossed back straight from the bottle. Why let that ugly glass you bought at the dollar store ruin the experience? The direct and preferred route: bottle, to mouth, to stomach. A small warning, however: you must be awesome to be able to pull off a classless act such as drinking merlot straight from the bottle. Just do yourself a favor, and at least remove the brown bag.

My latest gathering with my good friend Robert (Mondavi, that is) was this past Friday night. My friend (not Robert this time) was playing a show at a local bar, and several of us returned to my girlfriend's apartment after the show to watch TV and have a few more drinks (I firmly believe there is nothing wrong with this). While my girlfriend was already familiar with the contents of my brown paper bag, my amigo Jon was not. After I poured myself a glass, much like a girl scout standing outside of Stop and Shop, I forced the wine upon him (for clarity's sake, wine= girl scout cookies, which obviously none of us can refuse. Ever.) As expected, the first sip was met with a "WOW". If the tide of conversation had not so abruptly shifted, if I know how to read people, he probably would have said something like "This is incredibly smooth, from the start through to its finish. There is no hint of bitterness, but rather a full body that leaves your mouth (comfortably) dry, but not desertous. It peaks slightly after the initial taste, and then quickly mellows out. The wine boasts a very full body, which just leaves you craving for more". Or he could have just said the drink was delicious. I later spilled some on my jeans. As this is only my second post, I am not comfortable sharing with you yet whether or not I tried to lick the wine off my jeans (but the answer is yes).

For any of you outside of the Sonoma/Napa area that are not aware of the weather here, it has been HOT! And hot is a challenging thing for vintners to deal with at this time of the year. Normally, weather at this time of the year is foggy and cool in the early morning; sunny, with highs in the 80s in the afternoon, and 50ish degree temps at night. Perfect ripening weather for the grapes. This year, not quite so...the last 11 days have been very warm, with temperatures exceeding 100 degrees seven times, and the other four days being in the 90s. We are supposed to be cooling off and seeing the return of the fog beginning tomorrow, with highs in the 80s for the first part of the week. The result of all this hot weather at a critical ripening time is that many wineries have picked their early ripening varieties at higher than normal sugar levels; the later ripening varieties are also going to be ready sooner, and with challenging balance issues. Which bring us to our baby, the '08 Dolcetto. After visiting the vineyard the last several days, it's about time to pick. The grapes are tasting very nice, and the sugars are still low enough so that we did not have to make a "mercy" pick. Our plan is to harvest on Tuesday at first light, when the weather should be in the low 50s with a blanket of fog. This will keep the fruit cold as we bring it in, and will give us optimum conditions to begin the winemaking process. The photos on this page were taken yesterday, with Tony and I sampling the vineyard...[gallery]

Yesterday was been spent in a semi-relaxed state. Inbetween entertaining Indi I updated my other blog, browsed various websites and found a suitable recipe for the wine we're starting soon. I spent the night looking after Indi who's filled up with a cold & consequently ended up making a vegan cake at 5.45am!
Jeff made an onion soup & froze more than half of it and we froze strawberries & cooked sliced beetroot. Getting the hang of this food storage thing!

We scoured the supermarkets for marked down fresh foods this afternoon. I scored a mango (10p), a pack of lamb's lettuce (10p), a bunch of organic spring onions (35p) and a load of bread for the freezer totalling less than a quid, but that was all unfortunately.

Last night I cleaned out two demi-jons and a bucket for the blackberry wine I'm planning. I have about 4lbs of blackberries we picked last month in the freezer and can't wait to start making wine again. A tip I read yesterday from Fiona of The Cottage Smallholder - leave to mature in the demi-jon for 3 years (great for me as I'm teetotal at the moment due to breastfeeding Indi). I just know that Jeff won't be able to hold back that long though! I'll tell him to go pick the blackberries himself next year and then he can make an early wine! Perhaps I'll make an orange one too for earlier bottling, it always worked ok-ish in the past. One of my most favourite of our homemade wines was mint, it was so refreshing, but Jeff has harvested most of the mint for his sauce and cucumber salad and the rest has rotted (smack my hand!).

Tomorrow I'm hoping to make a tart from the mango I bought and some cooking apples (thanks to Orangette for the recipe via Fiona). Orangette used apricots and Fiona used blackberries, so it's going to be a trial & error situation with my mango! All this depends on how Indi is feeling though, here's hoping he gets better & not worse.

No Egg, No Mixer, Easy Yummy Chocolate CakeIngredients

    1.5 cups of flour
1 cup of sugar
3 tablespoons of cocoa
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon of vanilla
2 teaspoons of vinegar
5 tablespoons of vegetable oil
1 cup of raisin water (To make boil about half a cup of raisins in water)
1 teaspoon of cinammon (optional)

Directions:

This recipe was given to me a friends grandmother who is an expert in kosher cooking and has some fantastic vegan recipes.

Method: Pour dry ingredients straight into a baking dish. Around 9 X 9 is a perfect size. Combine the ingredients with a spoon until mixed thoroughly. Then make three grooves in the dry mixture (or wells as my friends grandmother called them): one large and two smaller. Pour the oil into the large well, and the vinegar in one of the smaller ones, and the vanilla in the other. Pour the raisin water (fruit tea can also be substituted) over the mixture. Mix all ingredients together, so you don't see any flour. Bake in 350 degree for half an hour.

So I was up at my Uncles house in Redding this weekend at a pool party. We played in the pool, and had a great food (Salmon, chicken, beef, shrimp, bacon, peaches(grilled), avocado, beans, rice....OK I will stop now). We also got to try out a really great wine, Bad Astronauts - Phoenix Landing. It has been winning awards all over the place in homemade wine competitions, and I know why. This wine was awesome.

Thanks to Uncle D for inviting us up and sharing your pool, and yes we will have to make more trips to Redding to see you! Thanks to Pipe, Zach & Erron for the grub (very delicious). Ant thanks to Zach for bringing the wine.

Side note, I have a stupid habit of opening my eyes under water, and I am paying the price. I could not drive home last night due to my vision was heavily impaired. Still this morning, my eyes are bloodshot and hurting.

Well, well, I hoped that working in the wine industry would be fun, but I certainly didn't expect to be taken out to a Michelin starred restaurant before my first week was through. However, this is precisely what happened. No, correction, I was taken to a restaurant with two Michelin stars. Brilliant.

OK, so I guess this place doesn't really need people to write rave blog reviews about it, but it was really, really good. It is the kind of place where the waiters explain all the dishes to you before you begin - the kind of place where the poached pollock comes with 'smoked e'spuma' (foam, basically). It is the kind of place where the Internet Marketing Manager stands next to Andrew Lloyd Webber at the urinal (but not before I had spoken ill of this bizarre man. This was a coincidence - I obviously didn't think he'd be sat in the blinkin' restaurant).

Anyway, it's probably not somewhere you'd go for a hearty Sunday lunch, the portions aren't massive, but if you're craving elegant course after elegant course, home made chocolates, delicate jellies with exquisite cheeses, fresh mint teas and impeccable service, then this is the place for you. I'm sure it's not cheap but I hear the wine list is exceptional (we brought our own wines along, darling), so if you feel like splashing out then I reckon this place is a sure-fire hit. Unless you're afraid of a bit of posh, then just stick to Pizza Hut, I hear the all-you-can-eat buffet is something to behold.
