I think there are many new media players out there that people haven't heard of but would make a switch if they knew it was easy, had a better set of features or was marketed to them with some relevant feature.

For reference, I use Winamp and almost always have done so as I consider iTunes and WMP both to be 'mainstream'. I use lots of different media players and am now looking at home media servers.

Um novo cavalo-de-tróia ataca redes de compartilhamento P2P e infecta arquivos MP3, WMA e WMV, entre outros.

Segundo a empresa Secure Computing, o invasor, batizado como Trojan.ASF.Hijacker.gen, infecta arquivos de mídia na máquina da vítima, usando o ASF (Advanced Systems Format), formato da Microsoft para streaming de áudio e vídeo. O ASF é parte das definições Windows Media.

Quando o usuário tenta executar um arquivo infectado, abre-se uma caixa de diálogo que lhe pede que lhe pede para rodar um codec que estaria faltando para ser possível abrir o arquivo. Nesse momento, outros programas maliciosos são instalados.

O Hijacker.gen é capaz de converter arquivos MP2 e MP3 para WMA. Nos arquivos de áudio convertidos, fica injetado o comando nocivo que redireciona o Windows Media Player para solicitar o download do falso codec. O arquivo depois passa a ser executado normalmente, para que o usuário não desconfie, mas o cavalo-de-tróia já está ativo no sistema.

Ao infectar arquivos de mídia, o objetivo dos autores do Hijacker.gen é disseminá-lo em redes P2P. Portanto, é preciso ter cuidado com arquivos MP3.

Por via das dúvidas, não baixe arquivos com menos de 800Kb geralmente são vírus, não baixe nenhum codec que músicas baixadas por e-mule, Lime Wire ou qualquer programa P2P, possa pedir.

Internet es un sitio maravilloso donde se pueden combinar varias cosas dentro de nuestra computadora, un ejemplo, un video, uno que nos guste demasiado no muy conocido con seguridad de hace bastantes años y por logica dificil (por no decir imposible) de conseguir, en mi caso, este estupendo video de Barnes & Barnes, Fish Heads.

Aqui es donde entra YouTube, sitio donde se puede encontrar esta genialidad de lo absurdo, me refiero a mi bizarro video favorito, y eso gracias no tanto al mismo YouTube sino a los miles de usuarios registrados en él, que se encargan de subir nostalgicos videos musicales de los que las mismas tiendas de discos se han olvidado al igual que las compañias discograficas que originalmente los produjeron, además de subir todo tipo de cosas imaginables e incluso no imaginables.

Ahora, otro elemento que nos produce una enorme dicha es un buen software que nos permita descargar de YouTube eso, lo dificil de obtener, luego un buen reproductor de medios como el Windows Media, el Winamp o el iTunes, en este último caso, descargando los videos en formato mp4 para poder guardarlos en un iPod...

Regresando al asunto de con que descargar los videos, una excelente opción es el aTube Catcher, copiar y pegar la URL, elegir el formato entre AVI, FLV, GIF, MPG, WMV, MP4, M4A, PSP, 3GP, 3G2, MOV, MP3, MP2, VOB, WMA, WAV, OGG o FLAC, descargar y en muy poco tiempo disfrutar del resultado.

Facil de usar y permite convertir los videos ya descargados a otro formato siempre y cuando hayan sido descargados en FLV (aunque confieso que no he tenido la necesidad de usar esta aplicación), no tendra una apariencia llamativa, es más bien sencilla, se instala rapidamente y no ocupa mucho espacio. En la opción Guardar en: se recominda remplazar la palabra desktop y agregar el nombre de un archivo creado previamente para que los videos no aparescan en el escritorio cada uno en acceso directo.

La cuestión de las descargas es algo delicado, pero definitivamente si el gran mercado del consumo dejo fuera joyas que sólo se pueden conseguir por este medio, pues me parece que es valido, es decir, si no puedo conseguir un DVD que incluya Fish Heads siempre estará YouTube, probablemente porque las transnacionales piensan que no es lo suficientemente comercial, ellos se lo pierden.

Ingredientes para ser superficialmente feliz:

• 1 video (el que más te guste)
• YouTube (copy&paste la URL)
• aTube Catcher (ingrediente recomendado)
• iTunes (copiar video en MP4)
• iPod (sincronizar al reproductor...)

¡Y listo!.

Anyway, I'm glad to see Canonical and Intel working together to deliver yet another avenue for people to use Linux.  I'm especially glad that on these netbooks people will not be limited by the types of videos they can watch.

I wonder if the amount of people who now have the ASUS Eee PC runing Ubuntu is helping out with this?

Part of the goal of this project is "This interface is optimised for a retail sales environment" which means there were be more and more average users running this device who want and need WMV format.  Should we cripple their experience or should we allow them to have the best possible experience?  I vote for the best format.  Including out of the box MP3 support.

I'd been trying all week to pull this footage from DVD and put it on YouTube, but Adobe Premiere (Elements) was giving me jip. 

I downloaded a trial version of Sony Vegas 8 Platinum and give it a whirl.  You are supposed to be able to import straight from the DVD, but that didn't work for me.  Apparently the DVD needs to be finalized for that to work - I don't know if our church DVDs are or not.

So, I loaded up Super and converted the VOB to Mpeg2 and brought the Mpeg2 into Vegas.  I'd tried this step already in Premiere with unsatisfactory results, but it worked a treat in Vegas.  I cut the section I needed, added title, fades and rendered it to Windows Media 9 format for upload to YouTube.

I found a great YouTube channel (guerillabill) with loads of Vegas how-to videos.  I used tips from this video to customize the render for YouTube - except I kept the output size to 640x480 instead of the suggested 320x240.

I have to say, I was impressed by the final file size and quality of the Windows Media 9 file.  I normally use xvid/divx to keep the files under 100mb.  The Windows Media 9 file that I uploaded to YouTube was 28mb!

O Antônio Carlos publicou um post muito interessante. Eu já venho há algum tempo acompanhando as dificuldades da Microsoft nos últimos anos, e é impressionante como eles estão com um caminho espinhoso pela frente.

Já há fortes sinais de que a Microsoft lançará o Windows 7 ano que vem, após sérias dificuldades com o Vista. É verdade que o Vista está conseguindo vender alguma coisa, mas é bem menos do que a Microsoft esperava. Além disso, recentemente li que o market share do Windows XP se manteve praticamente constante, e quem caiu na verdade foi o Windows 2000.

Depois que o Antônio e o Azamba me falaram no Tech Talk da situação sofrível do Silverlight, fiquei com a impressão de que a Microsoft está mesmo em apuros sérios. O IE aos poucos está cedendo mais espaço pro FF, Windows Media já está numa situação crítica perante o Flash Video e em praticamente todas as frentes da Microsoft eles estão com dificuldades.

A Gartner durante muito tempo era conhecida por previsões sempre favoráveis à Microsoft (até mais do que deveria), mas isso já está mudando. Recentemente eles disseram que o Windows está entrando em colapso, e que a situação está insustentável. Até o Office que sempre foi a estrela do sucesso da empresa está tendo algumas complicações. A Microsoft investiu nesse formato XML "aberto" em vez de apoiar as iniciativas do Open Document. Pois recentemente foram feitos testes dos arquivos do Office 2007 contra o formato "XML aberto" da MS e milhares de incompatibilidades foram detectadas.

A nova febre do momento na internet é o crescimento das redes sociais, e a Microsoft está tendo um papel pífio nisso. Diversos serviços enormes de redes sociais estão surgindo, e a saída pra Microsoft provavelmente será comprar algumas dessas iniciativas.

Antônio, seu questionamento foi muito feliz. Acredito que a resposta para a real descida da Microsoft como um todo está na pergunta que você fez. Por quanto tempo o desktop ainda será tão relevante como é hoje? A Microsoft certamente reza para que seja para sempre :)

Bueno, el objetivo de este post es sencillo; conozco aún a bastante gente que tiene muchos problemas a la hora de reproducir películas en su ordenador, ya sea por problema de codecs, dificultades a la hora de poner subtitulos a las películas, etc.

En mis comienzos, y lo digo así porque llevo muchísimo tiempo viendo películas y series en el ordenador, empecé utilizando el Reproductor de Windows Media. Es muy posible que casi todos lo hayáis utilizado, o de hecho que aún lo sigáis utilizando. A pesar de que no al mundo de los reproductores de vídeo lo que Internet Explorer es al de los navegadores, desde luego se trata de un reproductor no demasiado bueno, con un gran consumo de RAM por su parte y que presenta muchos problemas a la hora de reproducir películas con codecs "no standard"... por no decir de su mediocre integración con los subtítulos.

Por ello, fue cuestión de tiempo que empezase a buscar nuevos reproductores de vídeo; así fue como, después de largas y tediosas búsquedas, encontré el que para mí es el mejor, y con muchísima diferencia, reproductor de vídeo del mercado: BSPlayer.

En primer lugar hablaré de sus dos mayores (y diría que únicos) puntos negativos; el primer es que, a pesar de que en su primera versión fue gratuito, se convirtió en un programa de pago (29.95€, para ser más exactos xD) con versión gratuita recortada y con adware. A pesar de esto, podéis encontrar la versión 1.algo gratuita, completa y sin adware. El segundo punto negativo es que falla muchísimo a la hora de reproducir DVD, pero para eso ya tenemos al VLC Player, del que en breve hablaré.

Dando paso a las ventajas, ciertamente son innumerables: el interfaz es perfecta, simple y muy manejable, permitiendo redimensionar al gusto de cada uno la ventana, con muy poco gasto de recursos; la integración de subtitulos es de lo mejorcito, puesto que no solo funciona genial, sino que además permite cambiar el tipo de fuente, el tamaño, color, posición, etc. de los subtitulos, así como sincronizarlos como nosotros deseemos; por otro lado, permite también realizar capturas de pantalla, usar diferentes modos de pantalla (Panorámico, 4:3,...). En mi opinión, el mejor reproductor de vídeo que he probado jamás.

Por otro lado, hay que tener muy en cuenta a VLC Player; personalmente no me gusta tanto, ya que su interfaz no me llega a convencer y la integración de los subtítulos me ha dado a menudo problemas, pero por lo demás se trata de un reproductor totalmente gratuito, liviano, todoterreno en cuanto codecs (no suele dar ningún problema al respecto) y con una perfecta reproducción de DVD's, mejor incluso que algunos programas comerciales, y además es multiplataforma (Soporta Windows, Linux, MAC, etc,..).

En caso de que sigáis teniendo problemas de códecs, recomiendo que bajéis algun pack, como por ejemplo K-Lite.

Why Play DVD in Windows Media Player? I get asked this question a lot.

My simple 2 part answer is that:

A) You do NOT have to learn how to use yet another piece of new software. All the DVD decoders available integrate themselves into the Windows Media Player interface. So you have the new features of DVD but the familiar look and feel of WMP.

and

B) PRICE. A dvd codec for Windows Media Player is usually only a fifth of the price!

I often travel to conferences with a laptop and a few DVD's so appreciate having a DVD plug-in installed.

All proponents of the ad-funded model are always pushing the line that as it is ad-funded it will be free to the consumer and hence will help curb P2P file sharing and piracy. Are you telling me that a teenager who normally goes to their favorite torrent site and rips all the tunes they want for free, is going to be incentivised to go to a site and have to view or listen to ads before having access to their tune? I would state if anything this is just placing another barrier other than DRM in front of them, which in turn actually de-incentivises the P2P file sharer.

I asked the question who in the audience at this conference would be prepared to view/listen to an advertisement to have access to a free track? Only 15 – 20 percent of the audience half-heartedly put their hands up. In my mind at an industry conference if there is such a low percentage of industry personnel actually buying into an ad-funded model, my suspicion is that the percentage will be a lot lower with music fans on the street.

At this conference, Simon Wheeler Digital Director at Beggers Group stated that if the businesses pushing the ad-funded model cannot even afford to license the music from the ad-funded business model what is the point of a revenue share? In my mind this is a key point. If an ad-funded model does not generate enough income to enable the business to license music, than what is the incentive for a label to agree to a revenue share, as their income derived is obviously not going to be sufficient? How can these businesses expect labels to accept lower than traditional fees for the music to support a business model that on face value seems to be unsustainable.

So what are the commercials (no pun intended) like in terms of payment to labels and further down the chain actual artists? If you look at the myspace model all advertisements are purchased on behalf of brands by media agencies usually on a CPC or CPM model. These models usually purchase advertisement impressions on the website based on £8 - £10 per 1000 ads served. After costs an ad-funded business offering a labels music for free expects labels to accept a revenue share. This would realistically leave labels with a maximum of £3 - £4 per 1000 ads served on their artist’s page and this would usually translate to 500 – 1000 song listens.

So what would an artist receive from such ad-funded deals? Generally an artist in the major label category would receive a 16 percentage royalty before producer and packaging deductions and that’s if they are lucky enough not to have they royalty halved because the label deems digital to be ‘new media’. So 16 percent of say £4 would equate to £0.64 pence to the artist before deductions for 1000 downloads or streams of their song. Understandably many labels are reticent to accept such a model, quite simple due to their unsustainable economic models.

At present this in my mind is a serious stumbling block. Until advertisers are willing to pay higher rates in the digital age for targeted advertising where free music is provided to the end consumer, these models are destined to failure. If anything I view such ad-funded models as a further devaluing of what music offers to the fan and is to the business. To date it is clear that the numerous different subscription models have not been the boon industry wanted, and so I ask the question, will ad-funded models be any different?

Para los nuevos usuarios de Linux, Ubuntu se ha convertido en la más popular de las distribuciones . Es fácil de instalar, de utilizar, por lo general podemos decir ya que "sólo funciona".
Sin embargo, pasar de un sistema operativo a otro puede ser confuso y crear problemas, sin importar lo bien diseñado que esté el SO, como es el caso de Ubuntu. Precisamente en ese sentido va la primera de una lista de 10 sugerencias a considerar mientras nos acostumbramos a Ubuntu.

El trabajo multimedia

Por defecto al instalar Ubuntu el sistema sólo contiene software libre, lo que de entrada significa que no es compatible con los formatos multimedia más populares.
A pesar de que esto es un inconveniente en primera instancia, de la mano de Internet encontramos solución a cada uno de estos "inconvenientes", de modo que reproducir diferentes formatos no es un problema en Ubuntu.
Un primer paso es instalar los diferentes códecs de audio, incluyendo los de tipo MP3, que no es libre, y formatos como WMA (Windows Media Audio), así como un formato que es muy común para escuchar radio por Internet, Real Audio.
En ficheros de vídeo, la lista similar: es decir los formatos más usados son del tipo MPEG: MPEG-2 (usado en fvídeos en DVD) y MPEG-4 (con códecs como, Xvid y MS-MPEG de Microsoft). En este caso, nuevamente, Microsoft tiene dos formatos privativos: WMV (Windows Media Video) y ASF para reproducción por Internet. Para flujos de vídeo por Internet el formato más común es Real Video. Por fortuna, existe otro formato, Ogg Theora, muy poco conocido, pero con la ventaja de ser libre, al igual que el códec Xvid.
La solución es instalar códecs de sistemas privativos. Antes de llevar a cabo esta instalación, deben estar activados los repositorios universe y multiverse. Tip para activarlos por acá.
Para usar MPlayer, basta instalar el paquete mplayer. Para usar VLC, el paquete vlc.
En la nueva versión de Ubuntu 7.10. Para instalar los codecs multimedia incluyendo Java, se puede bajar desde los repositorios oficiales de Ubuntu.
Para poder reproducir archivos multimedia en formato propietario, mediante motores como MPlayer, Xine o GStreamer, debemos instalar los códecs necesarios, que se encuentran agrupados en el paquete w32codecs..
Al no ser códecs libres, su distribución no está permitida en Ubuntu y, por tanto, para instalar este paquete debemos optar por otras vías, siendo una de las más sencillas Automatix o programas similares, como EasyUbuntu. En estos caso de manera totalmente gráfica y con algunos clics logramos instalar los paquetes necesarios.
Otra opción es ir a webs que almacenan software en paquetes .deb, y bajar las aplicaciones correpondientes a vídeo y audio, con las cuales, incluso, podremos ripear DVD´s y quemarlos al más puro estilo de programas nativos de Windows.
Por último, como se explica en Tuxapuntes: si quieres solucionar y tener tu UBUNTU 7.10, con los códecs, arreglados al 100 %, sigue estas instrucciones:

A very common Google search related to playing DVD on Windows Media Player is "mpeg-2 decoder for media player".

What many folks do not know is that with the addition of one simple plug-in, you can turn Microsoft's popular Windows Media Player into a full-featured DVD player!

When combined with  one of these DVD decoder (MPEG-2 decoder) plug-ins you will have new features such as full-screen video playback controls, DVD chapter listings, and integrated cover art...

There are DVD plug-ins for Windows Media Player on XP and Vista.

Tonight I was trying to stream media from my windows PC to my PS3 with no luck whatsoever! This was up until i stumbled upon TVersity. This is  WAY better than using media player 11 to stream media! For one it actually works and configures everything for the console of your choice (although i did have to manually open the ports on windows firewall after installation). If your media is not natively supported by the console (in my case PS3) then TVersity will trans-code the media on the fly!!! into a format playable by the console! In addition to this it can also stream live TV and radio directly to your console! Another case of where a small community and third parties can do a much better job than Microsoft when it comes to feature packed reliable software! TVersity is the perfect media server for PS3 and so far I have no complaints!
