Vou aproveitar e postar também o comando winipcfg, dos Windows 98 e Millenium Edition, só para alguns colegas relembrarem!

Eu uso linux. Há excelentes distribuições linux para micros modestos, como Damm Small Linux ou Puppy Linux, e com um pouco mais de garra é possível até mesmo se virar com o Slackware (eu não tenho essa garra toda).

Mas se um usuário normal me perguntar como colocar na ativa seu Pentium 200 ou seu K6-II 550, terei uma única resposta para dar: use Windows 98 e não use homebanking.

As razões são óbvias: a wiki do Windows 98 informa como requisitos de hardware um processador 486 DX2, 66 MHz ou superior, 16MB de RAM e cerca de trezentos megabytes de disco. Além disto, a Microsoft recomendava um monitor VGA ou superior, um drive de CD-Rom ou DVD-rom (!?) e Microsoft Mouse ou compatível (naquela época não era óbvio).

Vamos ser honestos: você não consegue instalar um Debian ou um Ubuntu (nem na versão Flux) em um micro 486 DX2. E aqui é o Brasil! Estes micros realmente ainda estão por aí escondidos, prontos para funcionar. As versões de linux que você poderia instalar em um micro assim são do tempo em que linux realmente era coisa para gênios da informática e a Microsoft já gastava muito tempo e dinheiro com usabilidade. Quase prontos, porque o máximo que você vai conseguir em um micro desses é instalar um sistema operacional Microsoft que não recebe mais atualizações de segurança. Por isto a minha resposta tem um “não use homebanking”. Mas vamos concordar em uma coisa: quem precisa reviver uma instalação do Windows 98 não está pensando em homebanking, se é que tem conta corrente.

Um outro perfil de pessoa que pode querer levantar um micro destes é aquele cidadão que tem um segundo micro e não agüenta mais brigar com os filhos para conseguir que eles saiam do seu microcomputador, onde ficam por horas jogando. Ele tem conta corrente, até usa homebanking mas tem um micro em condições de rodar uma distro linux atual ou um Windows XP ou Vista. Dá para rodar um emulador de alguns games de sucessos (antigos, claro) em um micro modesto (senhores proprietários de 486 SX: não é de micros tão modestos que estou falando, ok?) sem que eles precisem detonar o computador principal da família. E o melhor: eles não precisam da internet, mas podem até usá-la! Claro que não vai ter antivírus, antispyware ou firewall para uma máquina destas.

Mas porque o post fala em "Segunda Edição"? Acontece que de junho de 1998 para maio de 1999 muita coisa mudou. Por exemplo, tivemos a difusão do padrão PPPoE, usado para permitir autenticação nas redes xdsl (Speedy, por exemplo), que não teve tempo de receber suporte no lançamento do Windows 98. Ou seja: quem tinha Windows 98 não conseguia usar Speedy. O software que a Telefônica distribuía junto com seu kit na época sequer prosseguia a instalação porque o sistema não oferecia suporte ao padrão.

O "Segunda Edição" era exatamente isto: um conjunto de melhorias que superava em muito os famosos Service Pack's do Windows XP. Houve um incrível salto de estabilidade no sistema e incluídos itens como compartilhamento da internet à rede local (via NAT), Netmeeting 3.0, suporte a DVD-ROM, e era gratuita para quem já tivesse adquirido (legalmente) o Windows 98.

Starter Edition era algo que não passava pela cabeça dos mortais usuários de computadores e dizer no colégio "instalei o 98 SE" enchia de inveja os colegas que usavam ainda o Windows 95 ou que ainda não tinham feito o upgrade da primeira para a segunda edição do Windows 98. O sucesso das duas letrinhas foi tamanho que depois a Microsoft resolveu usá-las para referir-se a versão Terceiro Mundo do Windows XP, aquela que só abre até três janelas do mesmo aplicativo e até três aplicativos simultaneamente (nove janelas no máximo) tem uma irritante marca d'água na tela que sobrepõe-se às janelas (canto inferior direito) e outras limitações cretinas como o suporte máximo a 512mb de memória Ram.

Enquanto estes SE atuais (XP e Vista) não vão deixar saudades em ninguém (a primeira coisa que todo brasileiro faz quando chega em casa com o cpu novo com algum SE instalado é chamar o vizinho pra formatar) o 98 SE deixou por muito tempo usuários do Windows XP com saudades, enquanto fez outro tanto de usuários preferirem enfrentar o Windows 2000 Server a aventurarem-se com as panes do Windows XP, que tornou-se um sistema usável apenas a partir do Service Pack 2.

Para saber qual versão você está usando, clique com o botão direito do mouse em “Meu Computador”, "Propriedades" ou “Iniciar”, “Configurações”, “Sistema”, e veja o número de versão:

• 4.10.1998 - primeira edição;

• 4.10.2222A - segunda edição.

Outro macete é a versão do Internet Explorer. O Windows 98SE já vinha com o Internet Explorer 5.0. Portanto, se "Ajuda", "Sobre", trouxer o número de versão 4.0 o Windows só pode ser 4.10.1998, ou seja, primeira edição.

E sim: trabalho em um Help Desk e há usuários de Windows 98 e Millenium Edition. Mas não atendemos os 98 primeira edição.

Secret - Hidden Command Line Switch
Instructions - Go to "Start", "Run" and Type defrag c: -b to defragment the Boot and Application Prefetch information.

Notes - Windows XP will run this automatically every three days or so, during system idle periods. BootVis will evoke this when you run the "Optimize System" function. There is no need to manually run this unless you wish to immediately optimize a newly installed application's load time.

Secret - Instant Win
Instructions - Hold down Ctrl + Shift + F10 during game play. Then you will be asked if you want to Abort, Retry or Ignore. Choose Abort, then move any card to instantly win.

Secret - Hidden Game Modes
Instructions - In the "Game" menu choose "Select Game". Enter -1 or -2 to activate the hidden game modes.

Hearts

Secret - Show All Cards
Instructions - Edit this registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Applets\Hearts and create a new String value named ZB with a Data value of 42. Start Hearts and Press Ctrl + Alt + Shift + F12 to show all the cards.

Background - This secret is a reference to Douglas Adams' book the Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy. 'ZB' is the initials of the character Zaphod Beeblebrox, the Galactic President. '42' is the answer to The Ultimate Question Of Life, the Universe and Everything.

Minesweeper

Secret - Reveal Mines
Instructions - Minimize or close all running applications. Launch Minesweeper, then type xyzzy. Next hold down either shift key for one second. Now when you move the mouse cursor over a Minesweeper square you will see a tiny white pixel in the top left corner of your desktop screen. This pixel will change to black when your mouse moves over a mine. You may need to change you desktop background to a solid color other then white or black to see the pixel.

Secret - Stop Timer
Instructions - Launch Minesweeper and start a game so the timer starts counting, then press the Windows Key + D to show the desktop. Now when you select minesweeper from the taskbar you can continue playing with the timer stopped.

Pinball

Secret - Extra Balls
Instructions - Type 1max at the start of a new ball to get extra balls.

Secret - Gravity Well
Instructions - Type gmax at the start of a new game to activate the Gravity Well.

Secret - Instant Promotion
Instructions - Type rmax at the start of a new game to go up in ranks.

Secret - Skill Shot
Instructions - Launch the ball partially up the chute past the third yellow light bar so it falls back down to get 75,000 points. There are six yellow light bars that are worth a varying amount of points:

First: 15,000 points
Second: 30,000 points
Third: 75,000 points
Fourth: 30,000 points
Fifth: 15,000 points
Sixth: 7,500 points

Secret - Test Mode
Instructions - Type hidden test at the start of a new ball to activate Test Mode. No notification will be given that this is activated but you can now left-click the mouse button and drag the ball around. While in test mode press the following keys for more secrets:

H - Get a 1,000,000,000 High Score
M - Shows the amount of system memory
R - Increases your rank in game
Y - Shows the Frames/sec rate

Secret - Unlimited Balls
Instructions - Type bmax at the start of a new ball. No notification will be given that this is activated but when a ball is lost a new ball will appear from the yellow wormhole indefinitely. Once this is activated you will be unable to activate other secrets without restarting the game.

Solitaire

Secret - Instant Win
Instructions - Press Alt + Shift + 2 during game play to instantly win.

Secret - Draw single cards in a Draw Three game
Instructions - Hold down CTRL + ALT + SHIFT while drawing a new card. Instead of drawing three cards you will only draw one.

OS Secrets

Add/Remove

Secret - Hidden Uninstall Options
Instructions - Warning: Proceed at your own risk! Browse to C:\Windows\inf\ and make a backup copy of sysoc.inf. Then open the original file C:\Windows\inf\sysoc.inf in notepad. Go to "Edit" and select "Replace". In "Find what:" type ,hide and in "Replace with:" type , then select "Replace All", save and close the file. Go to the "Control Panel", "Add/Remove", select "Add/Remove Windows Components". You will now see many more Windows components to uninstall. Do not remove anything with no label or that you do not recognize or fully understand what it does. Doing so can break certain functionality in Windows.

Control Panel

Secret - Hidden Control Panel Extensions
Instructions - Download and install TweakUI, launch, go to "Control Panel" and check any item not selected, then "Apply" and "OK". You will now see the hidden control panel extensions.

Device Manager

Secret - Hidden Devices
Instructions - Go to the "Control Panel", "System" icon, "Hardware" tab and select "Device Manager". Select "View" and Show hidden devices.

Secret - Phantom Devices
Instructions - Go to "Start", "Programs", "Accessories" and select "Command Prompt". At the command prompt, type "set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1" and press Enter. At the command prompt, type "start devmgmt.msc" and press Enter. Select "View" and Show hidden devices. You can see devices that are not connected to the computer. - Source

Notes - When you close the command prompt window, Windows clears the "devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1" variable that you set and prevents phantom devices from being displayed when you select "Show hidden devices".

Secret - Hidden MIDI Files
Instructions - Browse to C:\Windows\Media and you will find 3 hidden MIDI files:

flourish.mid
onestop.mid
town.mid

Notes - "MIDI" stands for "Musical Instrument Digital Interface" - A compression format for encoding music.

Music

Secret - Music from the Installer
Instructions - Browse to C:\Windows\system32\oobe\images\title.wma and play.

Notes - "OOBE" stands for "Out-of-Box Experience".

Shutdown

Secret - Display Hibernate Option on the Shut Down dialog
Instructions - Go to "Start", "Turn Off Computer..." and press either Shift key to change the "Stand By" button to "Hibernate".

1. Descarcarea de pe internet avast home edition.
2. Dezinstalarea oricarui alt program antivirus instalat pe calculator.
3. Dupa ce s-a terminat de descarcat programul antivirus, urmeaza instalarea.
4. Dupa terminarea instalarii de va restarta calculatoru pentru a perminte pornirea aplicatiei avast (inainte de restart veti intrebat daca doriti inainte de pornirea sistemului de operare daca doriti o scanare).
5. Dupa reinintializarea sistemului de operare va va prezenta doua optiuni Avast home registration si inca una cu adresele web. Va trebui sa aveti o adresa de email valida pentru a receptiona cheia de inregistrare avast valabila 12 luni (1an).

it was actually formatting my D drive which had all of my data, my projects, songs, games and everything.
So now I'm enjoy a nice cool day in the office, sitting all ends screwd up getting everything installed again.

I'll count that in as one of my worst days at Vizteck.

I decided to go and get my Windows 98 computer that has been lying in a shed for a good few years out and have a look at it. It had one 6GB HD and another 20GB HD. As I said above it had Windows 98 on it, but kept coming up with errors....

When I tried to boot into Win 98, I'd get an illegal operation (remember them?) and I couldn't do anything else. I gave up and inserted my Ubuntu Live CD, installed Ubuntu - wasn't that simple, kept on having trouble partitioning my drives...

Eventually when I had installed Ubuntu it was running smoothly, really nice with only 256MB of RAM. My main idea was to make it a server for this website, I still want to do that, but for now I decided to take out the 20GB HD and stick it in my main Computer...

The 20GB HD was Sata and my computer only had IDE support (I thought it did anyway) but a friend on Skype told me most motherboards come with at least one Sata port, I looked and yeah there it was. Had a lot of trouble getting the HD out and putting it in (wiring everything), a few cuts on my hand didnt help...but I managed :) .

I was really scared to boot up my PC, but it was working fine, found the HD first time...only thing is it was now showing a Floopy Disk Drive in My Computer....strange.

Al pedo hablé, pues pasó lo que suele pasar. De todos modos, señores chinos, si al mismísimo Bill Gates le pasó eso durante la presentación de Windows 98, y si sucedió durante una presentación de Windows Vista, no pensarán que ustedes estan exentos de estos males. Para que vean que no les miento:

Ngomong-ngomong, komputer Anda sudah ada antivirusnya belum? Kalau belum lebih baik ke sini dulu deh, buat nginstall antivirus. Nah kalau sudah, kita cek apakah antivirus Anda bekerja.

Caranya buka notepad ( Start -> Program -> Accessories -> Notepad ). Copy-paste kode ini di notepad :

Permainan ke-1: Cek apakah antivirus Anda bekerja

Tutup notepad. Kalau ada pertanyaan "do you want to save?" jawab "Yes". Gimana? file tadi hilang kemana? Masih belum hilang? Rename dari ekstensi TXT menjadi EXE, depannya terserah. Sebelumnya perlihatkan ekstensi file dulu yah (Tool -> Folder Option -> View, uncheck pada pilihan hide extension).

Permainan ke-2: Membuat virus palsu

Buka notepad. Copy paste kode ini:

Save dengan nama virus-palsu.vbs Klik double file tadi. Nah, serem kan? Tapi itu cuma bohongan kok. Sekarang klik kanan start menu, pilih explore. Taruh file tadi di folder Start Menu -> Programs -> Startup. Maka virus gadungan tadi akan muncul setiap kali windows start. Lumayan kalau dipasang di komputer teman bisa ngagetin

Permainan ke-3: Tidak bisa membuat folder

Buat sebuah folder di mana saja dengan nama CON, huruf kecil atau huruf besar nggak masalah. Bagaimana? Bisa nggak?

Permainan ke-4: Rahasia Microsoft Word

Kalau Anda masih membuka dokumen Microsoft Word, simpan dan tutup dulu. Soalnya Anda nggak tahu apa yang akan terjadi. Sekarang ketik kalimat ini:

Kemudian tekan enter. Maka akan terjadi keanehan!

Permainan ke-5: Bush hid the facts

Copy-paste atau ketik tanpa tanda petik di notepad: "Bush hid the facts" . Kemudian simpan dan tutup notepad. Buka lagi file tadi. Tulisannya berubah jadi apa?

Permainan ke-6: .LOG file

Buka notepad. Baris paling atas, ketik .LOG (ada titiknya lho), kemudian ENTER. Save dan tutup notepad. Sekarang buka lagi file tadi. Tulis apa saja di bawah tulisan .LOG, simpan kemudian tutup. Buka lagi file tadi, sekarang ada jamnya ya? Tulis sesuatu lagi, simpan kemudian tutup. Yang jelas setiap kali kita membuka dan menyimpan, selalu ada waktu yang mengikuti. Itu gara-gara baris pertamanya .LOG

Bagaimana ? benar kan ? kalian terheran-heran ?

Segun los expertos (y casi todo el mundo) Windows es el OS mas inseguro del mundo pero tambien el mas popular, Windows es inseguro desde que se inicio y de ahi mismo, trabajando sobre la misma plataforma vieja y llena de errores fueron solo actualizandola y agregandole cosas bonitas pero no funcionales, y es asi como Microsoft a estado pensando en matar a Windows, no, no a Windows Vista, sino a todo el OS Windows.

En estos dias en el que la comunidad GNU esta creciendo rapidamente y Microsoft esta perdiendo muchisimo dinero, ya sea con las demandas de monopolio, con los problemas del x-box o con regresar el dinero a las personas que usaron el Windows Vista y perdiendo alianzas con las empresas del hardware y a su vez estas mismas comenzar a hacer alianzas con la comunidad GNU, Microsoft quiere reaccionar.

Se han colado a internet "informacion tecnica" muy importante acerca de un nuevo sistema operativo llamado Midori el cual vendra a sustituir el actual Windows. Este OS se esta creando desde 0, desde los cimientos y al menos parece prometer que sera mas seguro y muy diferente a como lo es ahora su hermano Windows.

Microsoft esta en peligro, primero se va Bill Gates (mmmm, se habra ido por que Microsoft ya esta en declive?), despues anuncian que van a descontinuar a Windows (bueno, no anunciaron aun, pero eso pasara).

Definitivamente la gente no reaccionara de la misma manera, si cuando voy a un ciber cafe aun escucho a gente preguntar que en donde esta su Internet Explorer cuando solo ha cambiado el logo del mismo. Microsoft sera este tu fin o sera tu resurgimiento?
