Hoje em Mônaco foi realizada o jogo único da final da Supercopa européia. O consagrado campeão da Champions League, Manchester United, foi batido pelos semi-anônimos do clube russo Zenit por  2x1. Os Red Devils pareciam estarem sem motivação para a final, pois a estrela do time, Cristiano Ronaldo, estava do lado de fora dos gramados devido a uma lesão. Mesmo sem o portugês, a equipe de Ferguson em tese era pra ser muito superior a um clube russo. Mas a questão determinante para a conquista do Zenit, foi o comportamento tático do clube. Construiu o resultado no primeiro tempo e jogou recuado no segundo tempo, aproveitando os lances de contra-ataque.

A seleção russa de futebol que disputou a Euro 2008, dirigida por Guus Hiddink, tem sua base de jogadores, atletas que atuam no Zenit, dentre eles o destaque é Adrey Arshavin. Mas dessa vez o mérito pela boa atuação da equipe vão bem mais ao treinador Dick Advocaat, do que pelos astros russos da Euro 2008.

O Manchester de Ferguson viu a oportunidade de ganhar a taça -  perdida também em 1999 na final contra a Lázio - quando o português Danny enfileirou a zaga do Manchester e abriu o placar, parecia o nível do Zenit estar acima dos ingleses, então no fim do primeiro tempo Pogrebnyak, artilheiro da última Copa UEFA, marcou 2x0. Com um placar desse a favor do Zenit e apenas 45 minutos em jogo, nem todo o empenho e raça do atacante argentino Carlitos Tevez, foi o suficiente paar empatar a partida. Tevez foi o melhor jogador do Manchester em campo e foi dele que saiu o passe do gol do Manchester pelo zagueiro Vidic.

Até então o Zenit tem uma boa equipe, mas não terá facilidade na Champions League 2008-2009. Jogará contra Juventus e Real Madrid. De qualquer maneira suportar o Manchester foi um excelente treinamento para a competição européia.

The Super Cup is a one time match up featuring the winners of last year’s Champions League Final and UEFA Cup Final. Champions League Winner’s Manchester United, headed up against Zenit St. Petersburg, at the Stade Louis II stadium in Monaco, France. A noticeable hole in the Manchester United line-up was Cristiano Ronaldo, who underwent ankle surgery during the summer. United were also without Owen Hagreaves who is still dealing with his reoccurring knee injury, and Michael Carrick who also has an ankle problem. On the bright side, Manchester United welcome back captain Gary Neville who had been sidelined for more than a year with a complex ankle injury. Furthermore, Portuguese youngster Nani will be back on the team to provide a burst of energy down the flanks.

Zenit St. Petersburg of Russia beat Glasgow Rangers last year in the UEFA Cup final and were poised to throw a rock at the European Champions’ throne that United rightfully earned in last year’s campaign. Zenit will be delighted to have Pavel Pogrebnyak back who was out of action due to a knee injury. Also Zenit’s club record signing (€30 million), Danny, is set to make his European debut for the club and hopefully impress the rest of the world with his ability. However, Russia’s Euro 2008 hit wonder, Andrei Arshavin, was left on the bench tonight possibly due to speculation of a transfer.

The first half showcased a less than impressive Manchester United, who seemed to lack their usual offensive prowess. United had a fair amount of possession but they lacked the edge that they so blatantly had last season. The match started off very slowly with not much action taking place. After about 30 minutes things started picking up, but more so for the Russian outfit than United. As the half was reaching its close, the Russian side created more and more opportunities, showcasing some impressive flowing football. United were hoping to cling on until half time unitil Zenit claimed the first goal of the final, just a minute before half time. The goal came from a corner when Denisov headed the ball towards the back post where Pogrebniak beat Scholes to head in from 3 yards out.

Andrei Arshavin was brought on for Zenit, to the delight of any football fan who can appreciate a quality playmaker, except for Manchester United, who would have preferred him on the bench. In the second half United started off strong, containing possession with some fluid passes, but yet to disturb the Zenit goal with any deadly opportunities. After a few opportunities from each team, Zenit struck again in the 59^th minute through Danny. After a couple of connecting passes Danny made his way into the United box and shook the ball past defender Rio Ferdinand and fired the ball past keeper Van der Sar from 12 yards out, a quality finish. The play continued with Zenit playing on the front foot, trying to even further bury the Champions of Europe. After a switch of possession, Manchester United won a corner, of which Nemanja Vidic headed past Malafeev, the Zenit keeper. The centre back found himself in acres of space and was able to beat the three defenders who were on the goal line. Manchester United was revived and the once comfortable Zenit were now under immense pressure to hold onto their lead. United maintained the majority of possession towards the end of the second half, in search of a vital equalizer. Manchester United persisted to press on for another goal to level the scoring and save themselves the blushes of losing to their underdog opponents. Unfortunately, veteran midfielder Paul Scholes guided the ball with his hand into the goal from a Nani cross, which resulted in a second yellow card. It was a disappointing lapse of focus on Scholes’ part whose intentional handball gave him a red card, and his marching orders back the dressing room. As a result, he will be suspended for the opening game of the Champions League. The referee blew the whistle to the delight of Zenit, who were holding on until full time was called.

The final score in Monaco is in Zenit’s favor, 2-1. Danny was rightfully named man of the match and all football fans will be eager to see how he can perform on the top stage of Europe. If Zenit can retain this level of quality in their game, they will be sure to put up a fight for the Champions League title. As for Manchester United, they cannot solely rely on Cristiano Ronaldo to bring them glory, they must figure out a way to produce good results without being dependent upon the UEFA player of the year.

Yes that's right, living in the Rainy City has begun to take its toll on Vidic and he's spoken out about the climate here, "You get only a brief glimpse of sunlight before it's all cloudy again". He elaborated further, adding that,  "The winters are mild but in summer the temperatures seldom go higher than 20 degrees, and it rains, rains, rains".

Poor poor multi millionaire, paid to kick a ball around, pampered little Nemanja. It must be hard having to adapt from his upbringing in sunny Serbia - oh no, hang on a minute, its hardy the sun worshipers paradise is it? Nor is Moscow where he has played previously!

If he wants out of one of the world’s greatest football clubs and fancies earning a living over in more relaxed, slightly sunnier Spain then he should just come out and say it - never mind acting all disgruntled with the weather!

I'm sure with his more than sufficient wage packet he can afford to get himself and umbrella and balaclava!

Manchester did the double and have grown in strength and look firm favourites for next year already. Chelsea had a late surge towards the end and Arsenal lost steam after being in the front for a long time last season. Here is a list of some of the best of the season in EPL

David James has been consistent and his presence under the bars was assurance to Harry Redknap's team. Vidic and Rio provided the stability at the centre of defence which was responsible for the less goals in the Goals Against column on the tables. They complement each other very well. In Sagna and Clichy Arsenal had the best full backs in the league. Sagne was good in the air as well as surging back to defend while Clichy was an engine with energy left to do a run even in the 90th minute.

I am going in with a 4-5-1 combination as the defensive midfielder role has become one of the most important roles in any team. Players like Flamini, Mascherano, Carrick/Hargreaves have got that ability to cut down moves from opposition by coming down with the tackles at the right time. They break moves and win back possession. And in that role Flamini excelled beyond compare.

If a player scores 30 goals in a season and he operates in midfield, that is a performance worth many awards and hence Ronaldo makes his way into the team without any doubt. He along with Gerrard will be the attacking options in this team. Gerrard had a consistent performance and his attitude is one of the best in the league when it comes to leading the team by example. Fabregas added a few goals to the most number of assists in the league and was again the most creative midfielder in the league. On the left wing I am going with Petrov from Manchester City as he came out as a person with an awesome left foot. I wonder why he did not get mention in any other team of the years. He had some lethal crosses throughout the season and looks like a good introduction to the league.

With all the attacking options in the team I think the lone guy forward would be good enough for this team. And if that lone forward is Torres, nothing like it. That guy doesn't miss many chances and his finishing has been impeccable. Great to see him play in EPL.

Players who scored the most crucial goals

Jamie Bullard - Like Tevez last year for West Ham United, Bullard scored the most crucial goals towards the end of the season when Fulham needed it most to keep their premiership hopes alive. His freekick goals were as best as any that you will in the league and all those goals made for points which saved them relegation.

Carlos Tevez - He was the most important goalscorer for Manchester United this year as he scored in getting some vital points in drawn matches as well as some victorious matches.

Best new Signing

Torres - He was expensive but he has justified every bit of it. He doesn't miss many chances and his finishing was brilliant. He has got the power and doesn't go down that easily to challenges

Sagna - He was one of the most stable players in Arsenal this season and he was good with tackles as well as on the air. He complemented Eboue well on the right side and was playing some really good football till he got injured towards the end of the season.

Roque Santa Cruz - When Mark Hughes bought him from Bayern Munich there were many doubters but fifteen goals in the season is very commendable froma player who cost much much less than someone like Torres. He is only 26 and expect more from him next season.

Best match of the season

Manchester United vs Arsenal - This match played in April was a very keenly contested match and Arsenal showed their class. They dominated the match but gave away a dubious freekick and suffered a defeat. Great display from Arsenal and if they had won that match, then it would have been a different end to the season.

Can I just say as well that it was VERY close.  I have never supported a team that has won on penalties before, so I was not optimistic.  I do feel bad for John Terry who is the only Chelsea player I actually think is OK.  He fell over.  This still made me chortle though (thanks Si! sorry JT).

I am completely in love with all our players today.

Ferguson chose to go ahead with a 4-4-2 formation which meant that he was not sitting back and was all set to attack with Tevez and Rooney upfront. It was a good 25 minutes for Man Utd as they hardpressed and eventually got a goal, a brillaint header from Ronaldo. Essien was playing out of position at right back and was no match for the skills of Ronaldo. There was a double save from the brillaint Cech in between all this as Chelsea slowly came back into the game. But Ronaldo's defensive vulnerability meant Essien got forward, blasted a shot which deflected off Vidic and Rio to fall nicely to Lampard, who did not have much trouble slotting it home. 1-1 at the end of first half. This was definetely what the neutral fans had wished for, an exciting match and not a cagey affair.

Second half saw attacking football from both teams as Chelsea seemed to be on the rise with both Drogba and Lampard hitting the post. Ryan Giggs made his record breaking  appearance for Man Utd and almost scored the winner if not for a superb interception from John Terry. Drogba had a poor match by his standard and was sent off towards the end of the extra time for slapping Vidic, who did a very commendable job controlling the Ivorian. It was a stupid thing to slap a player which these days is a straight red card. His long walk back seemed like a certain exit from Chelsea and probably we have seen the last of him in a Chelsea jersey.

If we thought Penalty shootout was boring, you should watch this again. What an incident filled shootout. Drogba's exit meant a certain penalty taker missing out. So it was all going ok until Ronaldo came to take it. I am sure a lot of us felt that, this was not going to be as simple for him as it normally is. He stuttered and hit a poor shit which Cech had no issue in saving. So in the end it was left for John Terry to score and take Chelsea to their first Champions League triumph. But it was not there in the plan. Rain had made the pitch quite slippery and Terry slipped on his landing foot and the penalty was wide off target. So it was again back to square one. With Anelka's shot being saved by Van Der Saar, the team in red, completed their double for the season.

In the end it was a bit of luck that ran with Manchester United as I thought the teams were very evenly matched come the penalties. So Ferguson gets his hand on a second Champions League triumph and will look to build from here for an assault both at domestic front as well as Europe. It was sad to see players like Terry, Cech, Lampard and Ballack at the losing side after playing better football than Manchester United in Europe towards the end. But glory to Manchester United was written on the stars last night and it was a wonderful final for the neutral fan.

O Manchester fez um primeiro tempo primoroso, engoliu o Chelsea e saiu na frente com Cristiano Ronaldo. Os diabos vermelhos ainda perderam duas ótimas chances com o argentino Tevez, que poderiam ter decidido a partida.

Essas oportunidades fizeram muita falta, porque o castigo veio ainda na etapa inicial; um chute despretencioso de Essien sobrou nos pés de Lampard, que voltou a deixar o duelo em igualdade.

Na volta do intervalo, a final ficou mais equilibrada e também mais pegada, com muitas jogadas ríspidas e nervosismo acentuado entre os jogadores, algo pouco usual nas partidas européias. O Chelsea foi quem chegou mais perto da vitória após Drogba acertar a trave de Van der Sar, mas a partida caminhava para a prorrogação.

No tempo extra, o time londrino mandou mais uma bola no poste do Manchester, que respondeu em uma grande jogada pela esquerda.  Com a meta vazia, o meia Ryan Giggs chutou a bola no centro do gol, mas ela foi desviada por um toque de cabeça do zagueiro Terry, que e se tornou o herói do jogo até aquele momento.

O segundo tempo da prorrogação foi com as equipes já exaustas e cautelosas, mas nem por isso menos tensas, pois Drogba foi expulso após se desentender com Vidic e deixou o Chelsea com um a menos já perto do final.

Depois de mais de 120 minutos de um jogo muito disputado, chegava a hora das penalidades.

A disputa estava empatada em 2 a 2 quando o principal nome do Manchester, Cristiano Ronaldo, mandou a bola em cima do goleiro Cech e deixou os diabos vermelhos em desvantagem.

As outras cobranças seguintes foram convertidas, deixando o placar em 3 a 3. A última e decisiva delas era de John Terry, capitão do Chelsea e o homem que salvou seu time da derrota no primeiro tempo da prorrogação.

A chance do time londrino conquistar um dos campeonatos mais cobiçados do planeta estava em seus pés. Experiente, o camisa 26 dos blues correu para a marca do pênalti, escorregou no gramando molhado e mandou a bola pelo lado esquerdo da meta, jogando literalmente para fora o título inédito do seu time.

Depois da falha de Terry, o brasileiro Anderson e Ryan Giggs marcaram para o Manchester, enquanto Kalou descontou para o Chelsea. O francês Anelka tinha a responsabilidade de empatar novamente a série, mas seu chute foi brilhantemente defendido pelo holandês Van der Sar, encerrando ali a história do jogo.

O Manchester se sagrava campeão da Champions League pela terceira vez, repetindo as glórias de 1968 e 1999. Dessa vez, um título invicto, irreparável, de um time que tem jogado o melhor futebol nos últimos tempos.

Ao Chelsea, time com pouca tradição internacional, restou a imagem do zagueiro Terry; ainda em campo, o jogador estava desolado, inconsolável e derramando as lágrimas do título que escapou por entre os dedos dos blues.

Casi tres horas tardó en decidirse al campeón de la Liga de Campeones. Y finalmente fue el Manchester, y el Chelsea tendrá que seguir gastándose dinero si quiere triunfar. Los penaltis decidieron, aunque los ‘blues’ quizá merecieron algo más.

En la primera tanda de penas máximas -donde se lanzan cinco penaltis- marcaron todos a excepción de Cristiano Ronaldo y John Terry. El portugués lanzó el tercero, hizo una paradinha antes de lanzar y no engañó a Cech. Se vio obligado a disparar y lo hizo mal. Pero le arregló el fatídico lance Terry, que lanzaba el último. Si hubiera marcado serían campeones, pero la mandó fuera. Terrible para el capitán, que lloraba amargamente.

Se tiró el sexto y no hubo fallos. En el séptimo acabó todo. Anelka disparó un penalti algo fácil y Van der Saar no falló. Bajo una intensa lluvia, el Manchester volvió al trono de Europa, aquel que ya conoce de sobra Ferguson, pero no la mayoría de los jugadores que estaban bajo su mando.

He's wonderful, no doubt, but with the skill he possesses he does very little single-handedly.
I can't imagine him doing much if he were to play with his current form in a team that does not have the engines of Tevez and Rooney. I can't see him in winning teams if his back is not covered by rocks like Vidic and Ferdinand.

His lack of leadership was visible in the 'Boro match. Don't get me wrong, I love the fact that Ronaldo is in ManUtd, but with what he's got, I expected him to step up and make things happen when things were down. He didn't, they all did.
Which is why United is the best!

Evra was replaced by John O’Shea at half-time at St James’ Park, while Vidic limped off during the second half, seemingly still feeling the effects of an earlier challenge by Michael Owen.Ferguson told MUTV: “Patrice wasn’t feeling very well. He was sick at half-time so we took him off.

“Then Vida came off. I think he’s okay – hopefully it’s just a calf strain.”Following the midweek Champions League draw at Lyon, Ferguson made four changes against the Magpies, leaving Ryan Giggs out of his squad entirely.“Ryan got a kick below the knee on Wednesday,” the Reds boss added. “I wasn’t going to start him after his exertions against Lyon.”

Nemanja Vidic reckons Cristiano Ronaldo is producing his best form ever this season, but says the in-form Reds winger is still improving.

If Premier League defenders think they’ve got it tough having to face Ronaldo talents, spare a thought for United’s Serbian centre-back who comes up against the Portuguese wing wonder every day in training.

But it is on the training ground against the likes of Vidic and Rio Ferdinand that Ronaldo has been able to hone his talents.The 22-year-old winger is a notoriously hard worker in training, the fruits of which can be seen on the pitch, with 22 goals already this season, just one short of his tally last term.

Vidic believes Ronaldo’s performances have lived up to, and once again surpassed, all expectations.”We are very strong with him in our side,” Vida told MUTV. “Last season was great for him, he scored so many goals and played so well.”But he was under big pressure to improve again this season and, up to now, he has been great in the games and also in training.”You always need to improve at this club. Everybody has sides to their game that they can improve and he has tried to fix his in training.”The question is, still a number of years short of reaching his peak, how much better can Ronaldo get?

Piaţa estică este aşadar meticulos greblată. Că fundaşii sârbi sunt din nou doriţi în Albion, nu surprinde prea tare. Să se reia oare un ciclu existent şi în anii '90? De urmărit. O invazie în toată regula s-a produs însă recent din Ungaria. Prin prisma contraperformanţelor şi neparticipării reprezentativei maghiare pe scena recentelor turnee finale, preferinţa cluburilor engleze pentru jucătorii din stepele Panoniei pare oarecum ciudată. Să aibă oare de-a face cu lecţiile de fotbal predate Angliei de Ungaria la 25 noiembrie 1953, când naţionala lui Gusztav Sebes triumfa cu 6-3 pe Wembley graţie şi hat-trickului lui Hidegkuti, respectiv pe 23 mai '54, când se încheia chiar cu 7-1 la Budapesta? Aş... File de poveste. Maghiarii îşi apropiau pe-atunci respectul etern al lumii fotbalului insular, însă actualii conducători de club din Albion ştiu că "vrăjitorii" respectivelor timpuri nu-şi mai găsesc corespondenţi în generaţiile de fotbalişti unguri ai zilelor noastre. 

Altele sunt motivele cotei crescute a jucătorilor maghiari în Anglia. În primul rând, unii agenţi de jucători trebuie că-şi fac foarte bine temele şi intrarea pe piaţă. Cererea e de jucători robuşti, cât mai înalţi respectiv cât mai constanţi pe perioada întregului sezon, care să pună osul cum s-ar zice, responsabili pe teren şi înafara lui, şi care să nu coste prea mult. Aspectul financiar, deloc de neglijat, a mânat numeroase cluburi de liga a doua să se uite în curtea fotbalului maghiar. Iar Championship a devenit în scurt timp o mini Ungarie, cu jucători accesibili ca preţ.

În al doilea rând, impactul pozitiv avut de Zoltan Gera la West Bromwich Albion Birmingham a constituit cea mai bună reclamă cu putinţă pentru fotbaliştii maghiari. O poveste de succes. Transferat în 2004 de la Ferencvarosi TC, mijlocaşul ofensiv cu 15 reuşite pentru ţara sa contribuia decisiv, cu 6 goluri, la menţinerea trupei lui Bryan Robson în elită, fiind inclus în echipa All Stars a sezonului în Premier League. Deloc puţin, pentru un unşpear care costase numai 1,5 milioane lire. West Brom şi-a scos pârleala cu vârf şi îndesat, dacă notăm că Gera a fost unicul jucător din lot prezent în toate cele 38 meciuri ale ediţiei. Astăzi în fruntea ligii a doua şi calificată în turul cinci al Cupei Angliei, echipa din Birmingham continuă să se bazeze pe Gera.

Ar mai fi şi Gabor Kiraly. Sosit tot în anul 2004, de la Hertha BSC, masivul portar care e pe retina spectatorilor englezi graţie excentricităţii de a purta mereu pantaloni de trening, a trecut între timp de la Crystal Palace la West Ham United, continuându-şi pelerinajul pe la Aston Villa şi Burnley.

Lui Gera şi Kiraly li s-au alăturat însă în Championship jucători care nu-şi câştigaseră încă faima. Gera în fond era desemnat Jucătorul Anului în Ungaria pentru triumfurile în campionat şi cupă, cu alb-verzii. Ei au deschis pârtia.

Astăzi, Istvan Ferenczi, atacantul de 1,91 metri plimbat prin Bulgaria, Austria şi Turcia, joacă pentru Barnsley FC. Tamas Vasko, fundaşul central de 1,93 metri împrumutat de Ujpest FC, trage la promovarea în elită cu Bristol City. Bela Balogh, şi el un fundaş sub formă de împrumut, de la MTK Hungaria, apare pentru codaşa Colchester United. Nu chiar la fel de înalţi, Zsolt Laczko, împrumutat de la Olympiakos, şi Gabor Bori, o aripă de la MTK Hungaria, sunt între "vulpile" lui Leicester City. Krisztian Timar, fundaşul de 1,90 metri trecut şi prin Finlanda, şi care a costat doar 100.000 lire dar a marcat până şi "din foarfecă", respectiv Peter Halmosi, cândva la Graz dar sosind pe 400.000 lire de la Debrecen, sunt favoriţii locului la revelaţia Plymouth Argyle.

În Londra, Akos Buzsaky este un decar comparat de fanii lui QPR cu Pele. Că doar nu degeaba plătea Jose Mourinho 400.000 lire în 2002, pentru a-l lua la Porto. Tot de la Plymouth, unde a sosit în fotbalul englez, Buzsaky a sfârşit în capitală, pe 225.000 lire, înflorind sub bagheta lui De Canio. Mai la nord, la Watford, Tamas Priskin, atacantul de 1,88 metri, marca anul trecut în Premier League, jucătorul născut în Slovacia justificându-şi preţul total ce bate spre un milion de lire, de la 150.000, iniţial. Parcurgeţi ierarhia din Championship şi veţi constata că echipele de pe podium au maghiari în componenţă. Am uitat vreunul? Sunt 11 de toţi. Cât o echipă. Doar Denes Rosa, ceva mai scund şi deja la 30 de ani, n-a prins cu adevărat cheag, la Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Cu atât mai măgulitor pentru maghiari, nu mulţi sunt străinii de pe piaţa estică implicaţi în Championship. Ar fi legiunea lui Southampton, cu polonezii Marek Saganowski, Grzegorz Rasiak şi Bartosz Bialkowski, plus cu cehii Rudi Skacel şi Mario Licka, respectiv cea a lui West Brom, cu slovenii Robert Koren şi Bostjan Cesar plus cu cehul Roman Bednar şi polonezul Bartosz Slusarski.

Apoi Blackpool are un leton, pe fundaşul Kaspars Gorkss, Burnley un fundaş slovac, Stanislav Varga, jucător al lui Sunderland, plus un albanez, Besart Berisha, Plymouth un portar polonez împrumutat de la Everton, Lukasz Jutkiewicz, Sheffield United un june polonez, Ben Starosta, iar Watford un veteran goalkeeper eston, Mart Poom. Şi ar mai fi bulgarii. Veteranul Radostin Kishishev, la Leicester City, şi Svetoslav Todorov, atacantul lui Colchester.

Nici vorbă de aşa ceva, acum câţiva ani. Raportul valoare - preţ este însă convenabil divizionarelor secunde pe o piaţă tot mai scumpă. O întrebare legitimă ar fi unde sunt românii în toată Babilonia asta. Ei bine, Ioan Viorel Ganea a fost ultimul produs al fotbalului nostru în Albion, părăsindu-l tot de la nivelul ligii secunde, în 2006. Glenn Hoddle, managerul său la Wolverhampton Wanderers, avea să afle că relaţia antrenor - jucător n-a fost cea mai fericită în acest caz. Ganea sosea în insulă în 2003, ca şi Adrian Mutu, având să reziste însă mai mult decât "Briliantul" pus pe liber la 29 octombrie 2004. Despre istoria lui Mutu la Chelsea s-a scris pe îndelete dar, retrospectiv, s-ar putea specula că nefericita poveste a influenţat cel puţin pe termen scurt preferinţele unor antrenori şi conducători din Albion în privinţa apelării la serviciile unor fotbalişti români. Pe câtă reclamă bună a făcut Gera maghiarilor prin evoluţiile sale la West Brom, poate pe-atât a deservit imaginii jucătorilor români încurcăturile lui Mutu în vestul Londrei. Culmea ironiei, s-a întâmplat tocmai la Chelsea, unde prin performanţele sale între 1995 şi 2000, Dan Petrescu a desenat în tente roz CV-ul fotbaliştilor noştri. Sosit după un an la Sheffield Wednesday, bucureşteanul a fost foarte apreciat în Anglia, şi nici măcar finalul mai modest, cu câte un an la Bradford şi Southampton, nu i-a ştirbit din prestigiu. Poposiţi în insulă tot în 1994, Popescu şi Dumitrescu n-au continuat mai mult de un an la Tottenham, încercarea ulterioară a ex-stelistului la West Ham fiind una nefericită dar nu chiar în ton cu catalogarea "dezastru", patalama pentru Florin Radu Răducioiu, eşuat în 1996 în regimul lui Redknapp la "Ciocănari", cu tot cu golul împotriva lui Manchester United. Şi Viorel Moldovan a trecut în 1998 pe la Coventry City, însă valul post - World Cup 1994 se spărsese deja de ţărmul stâncos de la Dover.

Prin prisma posturilor pe care au evoluat, nu e de mirare că doar fundaşii au lăsat cu adevărat o impresie bună. Petrescu şi Popescu. Achiziţionaţi în general pentru flerul şi fantezia tehnicităţii lor, ceilalţi "tricolori" n-au făcut o carieră într-un fotbal în care, se observă în acest sezon, la nivelul ligii secunde sunt căutaţi estici nu neapărat cu selecţii nenumărate, dar înalţi şi preferabil cu roluri defensive. Bineînţeles, nu e deloc capătul lumii că românii n-au rupt gura târgului tocmai în Albion. Nu scrie niciunde că o asemenea menţiune în CV ar cântări în judecarea reuşitei sau neîmplinirii carierei unui jucător. "Tricolorii" or fi buni şi calificaţi la Euro 2008, însă n-au momentan căutare în insulă, şi ar merita să ne întrebăm de ce. Mai ales comparând cu influxul maghiarilor. Pe hârtie, nu la fel de buni şi nici prezenţi în Austria şi Elveţia.

Ceea ce menţionam în privinţa românilor trecuţi prin Anglia, cu diferenţa între constanţa fundaşilor şi inadaptabilitatea jucătorilor ofensivi, ar fi oarecum valabil şi în cazul sârbilor. Începeam prin a nota sosirea lui Ivanovic la Chelsea, un alt fundaş, ca şi Vidic, la United. Dejan Stefanovic, astăzi veteran căpitan al lui Fulham Londra, sosea în 1995 la Sheffield Wednesday, pe două milioane de lire, fiind mutat când de pe stânga pe centrul defensivei "bufniţelor", pentru a reveni ulterior în insulă, în 2003, tot pentru patru ani, cu Portsmouth. Şi de-acolo la Craven Cottage. Aşadar, până Vidic să se impună la Old Trafford, colegul său de linie Stefanovic a închegat o carieră în Albion. Să-l vedem pe Ivanovic. Dar Grant nu pare a da greş. Ceea ce nu s-a spus la vremea respectivă despre alte achiziţii de jucători sârbi. Cu aceeaşi menţiune. N-a mai fost vorba de fundaşi. Înainte de a-i aminti pe atacanţii luaţi în derâdere, ar mai fi Sasa Ilic, portarul născut în Australia. O promova pe Charlton în elită cu un penalty salvat la lovituri de departajare şi apoi trecea pe la West Ham, Portsmouth, Barnsley, Blackpool şi, recent, Leeds United...

Adus la Wednesday odată cu Stefanovic, atacantul Darko Kovacevic nu s-a adaptat în Anglia. Că astăzi evoluează în Champions League, cu Olympiakos, spune totul în privinţa valorii sale. Nu s-a mulat însă pe stilul ofensiv insular. Savo Milosevic, ajuns un an mai târziu, în '95, la Aston Villa, şi-a atras până la urmă porecla de miss-a-lot-evic. Joc de cuvinte. Ratează o grămadă. A marcat 28 de goluri în 90 de jocuri pentru Villa, inclusiv în finala Cupei Ligii din 1996, 3-0 cu Leeds. Dar renumele i-a fost altul. Sfârşit pe-atunci şi el la Villa, pe 4 milioane, de la Bolton Wanderers, unde ajungea în '94 în fotbalul englez, Sasa Curcic, un mignon mijlocaş, a rămas şi el faimos mai degrabă pentru protestul cu o pancardă, "Opriţi bombardamentul NATO!", pe gazonul lui Crystal Palace, ultimul club la care a jucat în insulă. Atunci, cota sa era deja de doar un milion... Mijlocaşi şi atacanţi.

Gera şi Buzsaky predau în aceste zile o lecţie de maghiară pe scena din Championship. În sezonul viitor ar putea însă la fel de bine vorbi româneşte în Albion unul ca Tamaş de exemplu. Românii au atuul de a se fi calificat la Euro. Toţi vor fi cu ochii pe ei. Vor fructifica oare şansa şi vor corecta oare apoi mâzgălitura lăsată la Londra de Mutu?

Vị trí thủ môn được trao cho thủ thành của CLB Juventus là Gianluigi Buffon. Anh đã có một năm thi đấu khá thành công cả trong màu áo của Juve cũng như đội tuyển Italia.

Bộ đôi trung vệ trong đội hình này là Vidic và Gallas, trong khi vị trí hậu vệ cánh phải là sự góp mặt của hậu vệ người Brazil của CLB Sevilla Daniel Alves, hậu vệ cánh trái lại là một cái tên nữa của United - Patrice Evra.

Ở hàng tiền vệ quy tụ những cái tên nổi bật và hoàn toàn xứng đáng. Biểu tượng của Liverpool Steven Gerrard chiếm một vị trí sau một năm 2007 thi đấu thành công trong màu áo CLB ở Champions League. Quả bóng vàng thế giới 2007 Kaka cũng có tên, bên cạnh đó còn có cả Cristiano Ronaldo và Cesc Fabregas.

Bộ đôi tiền đạo được vinh danh chính là Didier Drogba và Ruud Van Nistelrooy. Cả hai đã có một năm thi đấu vô cùng thành công và đều là thứ vũ khí không thể thiếu ở CLB của mình.

Có một bất ngờ là tiền vệ CLB Barcelon Lionel Messi lại không có mặt, mặc dù anh đã lọt vào top 3 của rất nhiều cuộc bình chọ danh hiệu cá nhân uy tín.
