An interesting question came across the transom the other day, from a Mr. McGinley. I mention that name because it's actually related to his question.

You may recall that many singers use a longer set of lyrics for "SJI" that include the narrator walking into Old Joe's Barroom, on the corner by the square, or some variation thereof. Sometimes the proprietor of Old Joe's is named Joe McKennedy or similar -- but sometimes he's Joe McGinley. (Refresher course here.)

Mr. McGinley wrote:

I am particularly interested in the Joseph McGinley version. Where does this name fit into the history of the song? Is it old or perhaps a personal or made up version by the Animals? Who was Joseph McGinley?. You state that the song has an old Irish origin. Do either of the two names appear that far back in any version of the song? McGinley is an Irish surname that would have been known in Ireland in the 1790's and before.

And later:

The funny thing is my grandfather used to sing this song in the 1950's (I think) using the Joseph McGinley version. With The Animals being English, the song 'probably' refers to an Irisman in Ireland or England at the time....I dont know. Yet the earliest I have found using this name in print is for The Animals in the mid 1960's! Have you seen the Joseph McGinley version in print any earlier than that?

Here's what I can say.

First, although "SJI" has been traced back to an Irish folk ballad called "The Unfortunate Rake," the lyrics to that (very different) tune makes no mention of a McGinley or a McKennedy -- or, for that matter, a bar. Read the lyrics here.

Second, I took a moment to revisit the lyrics offered up by Kenneth S. Goldstein to accompany the 1960 Folkways collection, The Unfortunate Rake. That collection includes Dave Van Ronk's rendition of Gambler's Blues, the made-in-America tune that is basically "SJI" by another name, and Van Ronk does refer to the barroom scene and "Big Joe McKennedy." Nother of the earlier variations on "Unfortunate Rake" in Goldstein's roundup (and there are a lot) have anything like this.

Next I looked at the two versions of the lyrics to "Those Gamblers Blues" set out by Carl Sandburg in his 1927 book American Songbag. One set starts out in "old Joe's barroom," and in this case it's "Joe McKenny" who tells the tale. (The other set does not have such a scene.)

Finally I re-listened to a few versions, and consulted Robert W. Harwood's I Went Down To St. James Infirmary for good measure. Fess Williams' "Gambler's Blues" starts out in "old Joe's barrom," but refers to Sam Jackson, "the driver of a delivery car" as the storyteller. Jimmie Rodgers' sets his version ("Those Gambler's Blues") in Big Kid's Barroom.

I listened again to the Animals version, and the lyric in this take does seem to be "Joseph McGinley."

I will admit that I have not re-listened to every single version of "SJI" that own, but so far as I can figure, the Animals version seems to be the only one that renders the name that way.

And that is the best I can do. Of course, if anybody out there can add to the answer, I'd love to hear it -- and I presume Mr. McGinley would too.

It's not really very useful of me to announce a forthcoming version of "SJI" that evidently won't even be available until 2009. Clearly, I haven't heard this take.

But I'll make an exception anyway, because I'm already excited by the mere news of it: According to Billboard, none other than Allen Toussaint will apparently include "SJI" on his next album, currently titled The Bright Mississippi. The producer is Joe Henry.

Among the songs on "The Bright Mississippi" are traditionals "St. James Infirmary" and "Just a Closer Walk With Thee," Duke Ellington's "Solitude," Thelonious Monk's "Bright Mississippi," Django Reinhardt's "Blue Drag" and "West End Blues," which was popularized by Louis Armstrong. Toussaint plays piano throughout the album and is joined by Brad Mehldau on Jelly Roll Morton's "Winin' Boy Blues." Joshua Redman plays tenor saxophone on Ellington's "Day Dream."

The main band on the set consists of Henry staples Marc Ribot on acoustic guitar, David Piltch on upright bass and drummer Jay Bellerose, along with clarinetist Don Byron and trumpeter Nicholas Payton.

That all sounds pretty good to me. In addition to the song selection ("Winin' Boy Blues"!) that's quite a group of collaborators: Ribot and Mehldau are both favorites of mine, and I also like Byron, Payton and Redman.

Here is an earlier post regarding an "SJI" element in the Touissaint/Elvis Costello collaboration "Ascension Day," and a follow-up to that post.

OrangeSodaMan, Stu-Vivor Finalist and all-around nifty guy, recently joined the Blogosphere with VS Unleashed!, his own little corner of the web.

Aside from having some insights into current formats and regaling us with tales of his subversion of new cronies at the tertiary education level, he actually posed a question that made me think at the end of this post - If you were a series of character cards in VS, what would your versions be?

I'm nowhere near as ambitious as he, so I didn't even try to come up with thirty, but for a lark I made a short list. Based on myself, there's...

Gdaybloke: Family Man (It's all about the Gdaykids)
Gdaybloke: Too Many EA's (SoL prizes gotta come from somewhere)
Gdaybloke: Sexier Accent Than Thine (... simple fact ;))
Gdaybloke: Textual Diarrhaea (I've typed some crap in my day)
Gdaybloke: Creator of Beercolate (Beer+Chocolate = Genius)

Of course, then there's the obvious ones:

Gdaybloke: Christopher Miller
Gdaybloke: Lost Hemisphere
Gdaybloke: Stu-Vivor

Additionally, there could be cards based on the original character of Gdaybloke as it evolved back in the days when I played Freedom Force.

Gdaybloke: CEO of H.A.M.S.T.E.R.
Gdaybloke: Agent Graham Day
Gdaybloke: Explosive Ammunition
Gdaybloke: Clone Killer

... but it's an interesting question to pose. What little pithy terms would you use to describe yourself in VS form?

For the record, Spud came up with a few of his own...

Captain Spud: Buff Studman
Captain Spud: Arrogant Prick
Captain Spud: Potato Powerhouse
Captain Spud: Smiter of Noobs

OrangeSodaMan's question remains - what would your versions be? Take a stroll over to VS Unleashed! and ruminate on the possibilities.

Microsoft Office Sharepoint Server (MOSS) 2007 is one of the most exciting, and the fastest selling,

Microsoft Office Sharepoint Server (MOSS) 2007 is one of the most exciting, and the fastest selling, Microsoft products of ALL time. Sharepoint can be used for so many things in so many ways by so many people-it's highly functional, easy to use and extremely versatile.

My aim with this post is to show you what Sharepoint is, how it works and most importantly, how it can benefit your business.

Microsoft Office Sharepoint Server 2007 gives companies a single, integrated location where employees can collaborate with team members across the globe, locate internal resources, manage content/workflow and analyse Business Intelligence data and much more.

• Collaboration: Allow teams to work together effectively, collaborate on and publish documents, maintain task lists, implement workflows, and share information through the use of wikis and blogs.

• Portals: Create a personal MySite portal to share information with others and personalize the user experience and content of an enterprise Web site based on the user’s profile.

• Enterprise Search: Quickly and easily find people, expertise, and content in business applications.

• Enterprise Content Management: Create and manage documents, records, and Web content.

• Business Process and Forms Create workflows and electronic forms to automate and streamline your business processes.

• Business Intelligence Allow information workers to easily access critical business information, analyze and view data, and publish reports to make more informed decisions.

One of MOSS 2007's big advantages is it's tight integration with the Office 2007 family. There are countless ways that the two can work together, but here are a few examples to give you an idea.

Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007: Create a library of PowerPoint slides that can be shared with other users on an Office SharePoint Server 2007 site.
Microsoft Office Access 2007: Take a SharePoint list offline and use the reporting features in Office Access 2007 to view the data and create reports while travelling. Forms and reports that use the SharePoint list are fully interactive — and Office Access 2007 can later synchronize the local list with the online list when you bring your laptop back online.
Microsoft Office Outlook 2007: Take document libraries offline. SharePoint folders are displayed just as other Outlook folders are.
Microsoft Office InfoPath 2007: Design browser-compatible form templates, publish them to an Office SharePoint Server 2007 site, and enable them for use in a Web browser.
Microsoft Office Excel 2007: Save worksheets on a SharePoint site so that users can access them by using a browser. You can use these worksheets to maintain and efficiently share one central, up-to-date version, while helping to protect any proprietary information, such as financial models, that is embedded in the worksheet.
Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer 2007: Create and customize Office SharePoint Server 2007 sites and workflows. Create your own master pages and content pages, so that your site has a consistent look and feel, or customize sites by using the latest ASP.NET technology, established Web standards such as Extensible Hypertext Markup Language (XHTML) code, and cascading style sheets.

A good introduction to MOSS 2007 and some of the things you can do can be found at:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepointserver/HA101732171033.aspx

There can be confusion around the differences between Windows Sharepoint Services (WSS) and Microsoft Office Sharepoint Server (MOSS) 2007, hopefully I'll be able to clear that up here.

WSS is included free of charge with Windows Server 2003/2008 and provides low level collaboration functionality to keep workforces together and to help them work efficiently. It is on this base that MOSS 2007 is built.

Q: What is DirectX? Do you have a definition?
A: Microsoft® DirectX® is a group of technologie

Q: What is DirectX? Do you have a definition?
A: Microsoft® DirectX® is a group of technologies designed to make Windows-based computers an ideal platform for running and displaying applications rich in multimedia elements, such as full-color graphics, video, 3-D animation, and surround sound.
Q: What is the latest version of DirectX
A: The latest released version is currently DirectX 9.0b for users of Microsoft Windows 98, 98Se, Me, 2000, XP, and Server 2003. The latest version of DirectX for Windows 95 users is 8.0a.

Read More at:
Q: What is new in DirectX 9?
A: "There are many new and exciting features in all of the DirectX components.
The SDK has added a new member to its core technology called Managed DirectX, a DirectPlay port for the PocketPC, a High Level Shader Language for D3DX, and Windows XP parity on downlevel operating systems for DirectShow and the DirectX audio APIs.
DirectShow also has a new Video Mixing Renderer (VMR9) which uses D3D9 surfaces and always renders video through the 3D pipeline, along with new and exciting samples.
The generic Windows Media Format SDK stub library (wmstub.lib) available in previous beta releases has been removed. DirectShow samples using this stub library have been reverted to the DirectX 8.1 behavior of displaying a warning to obtain the stub separately, and the readme.txt files have also been reverted with information on the process to obtain the stub."
Q: What is new specifically in DirectX 9.0b?
A: DirectX 9.0b includes security and performance updates, along with many new features across all technologies, which can be accessed by applications using the DirectX 9.0 APIs.
Q: Will there also be a SDK update coming?
A: Yes, Microsoft DirectX 9.0b SDK Summer 2004 Update will be released this summer.
Q: What will be included in that?
A: Primary areas of concentration for the Summer Update was for the Direct3D Extension Library (D3DX), Graphics Samples, Sample Frame work, tools and documentation. This release includes updated developer runtime and the previously released DirectX 9.0b Redistributable.
Q: What was new in DirectX 8.0a?
A: DirectX 8.0a contains updates for issues with international installs on Windows 2000 and issues where input devices could have buttons disabled that were enabled with previous DirectX releases. There are no other changes.
Q: What operating systems is DirectX 9 compatible with?
A: Windows 98, Windows 98SE, Windows Me, Windows 2000(Professional and server editions), Windows XP. and Windows Server 2003. DirectX 9 is NOT compatible with Windows NT or Windows 95.
Q: You do not have Windows 95 listed as being compatible with Microsoft DirectX. What should I do?
A: The latest version available for Windows 95 is DirectX 8.0a.
Q: Is DirectX compatible with Windows NT?
A: Yes, though the only version supported on Windows NT 4.0 is DirectX 3.0a. You must also install Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6.
Q: How much space will this take up on the hard drive?
A: It will take about 18 MB of space once downloaded and installed. About 60 MB for installation.
Q: Do I need to install DirectX 9?
A: There are improvements over DirectX 8.1, but most users will do fine with running 8.1. Future games and hardware will obviously take better advantage of DirectX 9.
Q: What was new in DirectX 9.0a?
A: DirectX 9.0a featured bug fixes as well as improvements in performance within the graphics and networking components of the original DirectX 9.0 runtime.
Q: I thought that a DirectX Icon would appear in my control panel - what has happened to it?
A: The DirectX Control Panel is only included in the SDK versions of DirectX.
Q: What is the DirectX SDK?
A: The Microsoft® DirectX® 9 Software Development Kit (SDK) contains the tools needed to build cutting-edge, media-rich, interactive applications. It includes the run-time, headers and libs, sample executables, sample source, documentation, DirectX utilities, and support for both C++ and Visual Basic® development.
Q: What versions of DirectX are shipped with the different Microsoft Operating Systems?
A: Windows 98 comes with native DirectX 5 support. While Windows 98 Second Edition comes with DirectX 6.1a and Windows 2000 DirectX 7. Windows NT comes with DirectX 3.0a, and Windows 95 comes with DirectX 2. Windows XP comes with Direct X 8.1. Windows 2003 Server comes with DirectX 8.1.
Q: Will new versions of DirectX affect older games?
A: No, as each new version of DirectX is backwards compatible with older versions.
Q: Will Windows 2000 users finally be able to update to each new version of DirectX as they are released?
A: Yes - all future versions of DirectX will install onto Windows 2000.
Q: Does DirectX have a role with Xbox?
A: Yes, all DirectX technologies had played a role in the development of the Xbox both through Microsoft and NVIDIA. Xbox either shipped with a customized version of DirectX or has a similar set of non-updateable technologies.

Here’s a very cool find by longtime friend of no notes Marc (Disquiet) Weidenbaum: Louis Arms

Here's a very cool find by longtime friend of no notes Marc (Disquiet) Weidenbaum: Louis Armstrong's classic take on "SJI" gets a serious makeover by way of a remix by San Francisco's Christopher Abad/Aempirei.

Disquiet explains:

In late August, Abad wrote in a single post on the blog of the Tenderloin District art gallery he runs, twentygoto10.com, about two separate events: first, that he had been in a bike accident; second, that he’d been “working on a generalized method for note detection on musical instruments.” His goal was to be able to have the computer transcribe what he played on his trumpet. “Needless to say, I inevitably failed,” he writes (at twentygoto10.com), “but I did come up with some novel audio filters during my fruitless research.”

In the manner of jazz musicians and computer programmers alike, he made use of his self-described “failure” and improvised, putting the notes of “St. James Infirmary” through the hombrewed filter and coming up with a version all his own, one that clocks in at a little longer than nine minutes. The result has the shape of the antique original (that lonesome chordal arc, and the requisite funereal pace) as well as the digital fixings of a contemporary rendition (notably the algorithmic pulses, as well as some glitches that suggest a dog barking). Abad has posted the C++ code of his little program, should you want to compile it and fiddle with the experiment.

I can't top that description. It might take a coupla three listens to really hear "SJI" in the remix, but it's pretty interesting.

Here is Aemperei's site; the blog portion doesn't appear to be working at the moment, but you can read more at Disquiet, which also has a link to an MP3 of the remix.

A now established form of the Bible is the red lettered versions with the speech of Jesus coloured red. Now comes the ‘Green Bible’ from HarperCollins. The Green Bible will have all references to nature coloured forest green to show Christians and readers of the Bible that Christianity was meant to be environmentally friendly.

True Christianity will always be environmental friendly for Christians are meant to care for the world into which we have placed and to use the resources given to us from our gracious God in a responsible manner. This further ‘user friendly’ version of the Bible is yet another gimmick obviously designed to sell further Bibles and create more wealth for HarperCollins. It is a very transparent marketing ploy surely.

What will be next? Perhaps a homosexual Bible with all verses relating to homosexuality in the colour pink – however, that will probably not catch on as the Bible’s teaching on homosexuality is quite different to the world’s and institutionalised Christianity’s.

The McCain / Palin campaign is now on the 3rd version of Palin’s visit to “Iraq.”

The McCain / Palin campaign is now on the 3rd version of Palin's visit to "Iraq." Yesterday, the McCain campaign released a second official version of Palin's ONLY trip outside of North America. The second version claimed that Sarah Palin's visit to Iraq in 2007 consisted of a brief stop at a border crossing between Iraq and Kuwait.

Strangely enough, the singer Pink seems to have predicted this one. Note in the story below that Pink wants Palin to point out Iraq on a map . . . and looks like Palin might have a hard time doing that since she and the McCain campaign can't figure out if Plain was there or . . . maybe not.

[caption id="attachment_2383" align="alignnone" width="674" caption="Sarah Palin at Ft Wainwright, Alaska"][/caption]

When she was first selected as McCain's VP running mate, it was claimed that Palin has traveled to Ireland, Germany, Kuwait, and Iraq to meet with members of the Alaska National Guard. They also specifically claimed that during the trip, Plain visited a "military outpost" inside Iraq.

The McCain campaign has continued to the claim that Palin was in an Iraq battle zone . . .

until the third version was released just today . . .

SARAH PALIN WAS NEVER IN IRAQ. She never ventured beyond Kuwait border.

The sick joke continues.

No matter what you say, I think that Halloween is one of the greatest holidays ever. We are already missing it and wait for the next one. I heard more versions about the origin of a Halloween than fingers on both my hands and my toes. Some are no more than a myth. But this story that I found in archives of funeral home directory, seems to be closer to truth than others. So, here it is.

I read that Halloween originated from the Pagan festival Samhain, celebrated among the Celts of Ireland. And that Irish immigrants carried versions of the tradition to North America in the nineteenth century. Many European cultural traditions hold that Halloween is one of the times of the year when spirits can make contact with the physical world.

Sur le rebord de la fenêtre on n'entendra qu'un petit craquement, et alors une brise s'enfoncera dans un océan de feuilles qui ignorent les désirs, les souvenirs et la douleur.

A little while ago "I Went Down To St. James Infirmary" (aka Robert W. Harwood) put up a fascinating post about "SJI" and Billie Holiday. It's a story that was news to me.

Billie Holiday, it seems, really liked ["SJI"] and wanted something similar but 'original' that she could take into the recording studio. The result was a song called "Tell Me More" based on SJI but with writing credit to Holiday herself. Holiday recorded the song in 1940.

The details are attributed to Billie Holiday: Wishing on the Moon, a book by Donald Clarke. Read about it here, but the upshot is that Holiday approached songwriting partner Danny Mendelsohn with a "great" melody -- which Mendelsohn immediately recognized as "SJI." Holiday was undeterred, pushed Mendelsohn to "bend" it a little and suggest some new lyrics -- and promptly recorded the results, listing herself as the writer.

I hadn't had a chance to listen to "Tell Me More" until the other day. Weirdly, I'm not sure if I would have picked up the "SJI"-ness of it without the pointer -- and I sometimes feel like I hear the song everywhere. (For possibly obvious reasons.)

I was struck by the lyrics that Mendelsohn claims to have tossed off.

Tell me more and more and then some
The way that you feel and then
When you've told that old sweet story
And you're through, then start right in again.

There is here a kind of yearning for words of "love and devotion" despite ... well, despite everything, words to be repeated from "now till doomsday, I never will hear enough."

I've made that old mistake, know the awful ache,
Of a heart that's double-crossed.
The wait has been so long, it's hard to be believing.
If I miss my guess, happiness is lost.

Seems in keeping with, or nicely complementary to, the "SJI" narrative. To me.

So last week I talked about using GTD for doing simplified project management.

Now while it was working out pretty good and I love Things it became limiting as I had static design docs in one place and my todo list in another. Along with issue tracking and source management I was having to switch context way to much. To combat this context switch annoyance I am migrating over to a wiki where I should able to integrate my todo list with my design documents allowing for a near seamless project management experience.

As I add design elements to the specification I can link a todo (usually more than one) directly to it. Initially I have chosen WikidPad for the wiki back end but I'm strongly considering PBWiki as it is very clean with some additional features that will likely come in handy. I have more investigation to do which I have little time for but before I signup for something like PBWiki I need to make sure I can get my documents out (with little formatting loss) of it if I decide to go another direction. I would also like desktop interface for it (similar to what Lighthouse just introduced for their issue tracking hosted solution) but it is a very promising looking tool.

The other 2 "management" tools I am using are Versions for source control (subversion) and as mentioned above Lighthouse (though I have not started using lighthouse yet; I want to make sure I can integrate Versions with it).

Ideally I'd like to gather all the "info feeds" from each of the tools (Versions Timeline, Lighthouse Tickets and Milestones) into the Wiki but even if I can not do that most these tools are still great as they just get out of the way and do their specific task which is what one wants, especially as a solo practitioner or a small team.

This is sort of interesting: A site called Jazz.com has just published a short review of the Harlem Hot Chocolates version of "SJI." The Harlem Hot Chocolates is basically Duke Ellington's band, with vocals by none other than Irving Mills -- the fellow who snagged writing credit for "SJI" under the pseudonym Joe Primrose. (See the SJI essay for basics on this.) As the writeup notes, it was part of a Hit of the Week series. Excerpt:

Based on the rough sound and instrumental blending, and an arrangement that may have been thrown together quickly to get the side done, this was probably a one-take effort, and was a fast buck for everyone present. But it is one more example of what the Ellington band sounded like in its early incarnation, and though a lesser effort, it is still worth hearing. Clearly it was among the jazzier efforts by Hit of the Week, a label that featured white dance and studio bands geared more for the average listener than for the Cotton Club patron.

You can hear this version here, on the Red Hot Jazz site.

From time to time Vista creates ’snapshot’ copies of your files with a service called

From time to time Vista creates 'snapshot' copies of your files with a service called "Shadow Copy". This allows you to retrieve older versions from files you accidentally delete or alter.

To go back to a prior version of your file/document, you simply right-click on the file and select "Restore previous versions".

Using the Shadow Copy service is a far easier way to recover your files than opening a backup you've made, and can get you out of some nasty jams. (For more on recovering deleted files, click here.)

Shadow Copy is enabled on all versions of Vista, but Microsoft grants user access to these copies only in Ultimate, Business, and Enterprise editions. (Clearly as a method to try to sell more copies of the pricier Ultimate Edition. Shame on you Microsoft; backup and recovery should be free.)

Tip of the day: Users of the "Home" editions of Vista can use Shadow Copy too.
The odds are pretty durned good that if you bought a new computer, and it came with Vista, it came with Vista Home Premium. I say that because if you walk into a store selling computers, I dare you to find the one that has Ultimate Edition on it. It seems to me that they all come with Home Premium!

Remember how I said Shadow Copy was "enabled" on all versions? Yes? Well, for owners of Vista Home Premium and Vista Home Basic, the service is running, but you need a way to "interface" with it (sometimes called a "front end"). To do that, download and install ShadowExplorer, and gain some of Ultimate Edition's functionality. This cool piece of software is free, but donations are accepted.

Today's free link: People who are using Windows 2000 or XP can get an almost identical file functionality with FileHamster from Mogware. This program is designed for people whose talents lie in the Creative Arts, so you don't ave to be a geek to use it. There's helpful user forums, too.

Please note: This ability is by no means a substitute for regular system backups. This is for small "oopsies", not recovery/restoration.
