When it comes to online "teamwork" games, no popular game is without its fair share of griefers and flamers. It sucks when you're the victim of griefing, mostly because the person doing it to you is a better griefer than yourself. So, you have a hard time trying to get them back.

I have mostly found this in mods for Half-Life 2, such as Gmod and Sourceforts. One person steals and wrecks someone else's creation, then that person lets off some steam by continuing the chain, and, after a few minutes, everyone is out to kill eachother. :D

Honestly, although griefing is kind-of a bad practice, it can be hilarious if done correctly.

In the newly officiated Team Fortress 2 map Fastlane, I decided to go with a Heavy for the Sudden Death. I don't know why, and I rarely play the Heavy... but it worked out wonderfully. Moondog took video of it, he runs up to me just as I finished my first kill (a Pyro), and then I killed another Pyro, and right at the end when Moondog gets backstabbed... I make two more kills, including the offending Spy. We ended up winning the 12v12 match. Enjoy! WeGame Link!

I've been feeling sick for almost a week now. Getting massive headaches and vomiting. Wouldn't you like to know some more detail on the vomiting part.

At least I had some fun while playing some Team Fortress 2. It's all just nonstop fun from the last few weeks. I've been giving enemy Spies invulnerability ubercharges whenever they approach any of my teammate's Sentry Guns. It's kinda cute how I always reply to the raging hardhats with "lol i so sorry i didnt know he spy i just bought tf2 yesterday plz dont yell :(". Until they all started to only be talking about me in the server. They all discussed and said I was in a clan that's doing these things on purpose, hah.

Oh the irony.

This is a never ending laughter as a Medic. Though, there are some downsides of ubercharging these guys. Some are just too dumb and pretend to know what they're doing by stabbing their enemy Medics in the back. I get that all the time, even if I showed "FYI I uber Spies" spray in front of them.

If you happen to find yourselves on the Control Point servers in the late hours on a weeken

If you happen to find yourselves on the Control Point servers in the late hours on a weekend, you will find yourself in a Control Point subculture that we lovingly call "CP After Dark". All talk is always on, people are singing, moderators are abusing, and maps which really aren't very good are somehow enjoyed.

Occasionally (and without warning) CP After Dark will spawn on a weekday night. Some say that the silliness that suddenly dominates everyone is a result of the 4 hosts of Control Point holding a seance in a basement. Others say that the sever is filled with subliminal messages that grab hold of ones soul as they grow tired in the night hours. Yet others just think there's a whole bunch of people drinkin'.

Early on this week, I was priveleged enough to be present for the soul-grabbing of the subliminal messages. The night started with Mario Kart, moved onto falling_cp and peaked somewhere around cp_egypt. JollyEskimo suggested everyone mimic his name and create a teacup, c|@/ at the end of it. The hosts must have simultaneously made contact with a spirit because suddenly I found myself not understanding what Jolly was trying to get us to do, and changing my name to Mr.Eagle C-Cup. I was delighted to see name changes filling the message portion of the screen; new names featuring various bra sizes and cup references. (Screenshot to come)

In the general gaming forum Wes Wilson (one of the hosts of Control Point) had apparently lost his serial key for Diablo II and was asking the community if anyone had an extra.
Wes took this picture to prove that he did indeed own the game.

We at Control Point have a long history of having fun with pictures of Wes. You can expect to see more of those in future posts.

In other news, the CP Book is slowly coming together, and I'm still trying to get a hold of someone at Valve to see if I can get permission to use some screenshots. I've spoken to a great number of people who have had no problem getting them to reply to their emails, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me at the moment.

Stay tuned for Spencer's Robot Podcast (at the end of Episode 39) and possible new nation vs. nation matches in Team Fortress 2.

We push little cart!

Just thought I'd let the curious cats out there know that I'm currently working on a Team Fortress 2 payload map, the same game-type as the ever so popular Gold Rush. I've also been poking around in Radiant, Infinity Wards level editor for CoD4, though I probably won't end up creating a level in it, it was fun to see a different tool set.

Other than that I've been reading up on the DnD 4th edition core rulebooks and I'm rather pleased. Just as videogames have taken from DnD systems, now DnD takes systems from videogames. There are so many fundamental rule changes that simplify the core systems.

I've heard some opinions say how that simplifying them, they seem more watered down and generic. But I digress, it doesn't take away from the soul of the game, it just changed it in a way that is more logical and makes sense to a broader audience. Most of your favourite spells are still in there, you just cast them in different and more interesting ways.

It's my belief the soldier is underpowered. Not everyone agrees (as evidenced by the comments), and in general I argued the demoman is superior to the soldier in a lot of ways. It's hard to find good demomen because regular grenades are so hard to aim, but if you run into someone who knows what they're doing with the grenade launcher you'll find out why they're so dangerous.

Stickies are another matter entirely. Stickies are the bane of Engineers and no one likes being hit by crit stickies. But you know you have a balanced problem when one of the game's own designers admits it:

Q. Some people are saying that the stickies for the demo are to strong. To the point where 3 stickies can remove a sentry, a dispenser and a full health Engie. Is this something that can/is being addressed or is it classed internally as “balanced”?

We agree that they’re a little too overpowered right now. In fact, internall, we refer to them as “winbombs”. We haven’t reached a decision on what we’ll change yet, though.

As some of you may have noticed on Gold Rush, sentries are very strong and it's almost impossible to take Gold Rush 2-2 or 3-4 if there are a lot of sentries around. Demomen become essential, soldiers become more obsolete. Hopefully things continue to balance out, but I'm not holding my breath on this one.

Well, it seems Ludo has called me out. Declaring me lazy and claiming I have stuff I'm going to post. Since I've left my dueling pistols back in the 19th century it seems my only option is to blow him away with the brilliance of my posting.

The moment Valve asked for help with the Heavy any blog with even a passing interest in TF2 immediately sprang up with half a dozen suggestions and a clever pun (I stared at the monitor for ten full minutes before settling on mine) as to how to adjust the heavy. These ranged from the simple (a mini-uber) to the crazy (roller skates) to the absurd (a giant sandwich). I, Dante, did not rush forward like this. Instead I waited, I watched and I considered. The Heavy does not have a glaring problem like the Pyro (underpowered) or the Medic (underplayed) did. In fact I play a Heavy a lot (I'm terrible at reflex aiming) so I'm understandably cautious. It's a class which already has a strong identity and role, and not something I want to change too much.

Now I think I have an idea of what to go for, but rather than simply tell you my idea I've laid out the thought process, lest you think I've jumped to this conclusion, if you read the 1fort comments you might have seen this already, this is the extended 'directors cut' if you will.

NB: First off, if you're not familiar with the goals and restrictions here, I refer you to this excellent 1fort post on the matter. Secondly I've only really considered the minigun, because a Heavy without a mingun isn't really a Heavy, is he?

Idea 1 - The Slowgun (I know, I suck at names. Feel free to suggest better ones in the comments thread)

A mingigun that slows down people it hits bringing them down to the Heavy's level. Making him (relatively) more manouverable.

Pros -Makes fleeing an option for the medicless Heavy, allowing him to retreat to the nearest dispenser or pickup more easily. Plays into the Heavy's style (ie: spray and pray) as you're looking to hit everyone nearby with it. You don't think about using it, but it encourages more thoughtful/cautious play in general.

Cons - Not much fun for people who are slowed, violating the unspoken commandment, thou shalt not make things less fun for everyone else.

Verdict - Miss. Wrecking everyone else's good time is a massive downside.

Idea 2 - The Knockbackgun

An evolution of the slowgun idea, a minigun with increased knockback, pushing people away from the Heavy, enabling him to better hold a position, or once again making it easier to flee.

Pros - Similar effect to the slowgun, but less irritating. We've all gotten used to knockback from other classes already.

Cons - The minigun already has a little knockback, so this is a very minor effect. It might require sustained fire to keep them back, in which case they're dead anyway. Someone on 1fort suggested boxing gloves/knuckle dusters with knockback, which I think is a much better idea.

Verdict - Miss. Doesn't do enough, it's merely a subtle enhancement of an existing ability, and nothing that's going to exite players.

Idea 3 - The Interceptor

A minigun that can hit rockets and grenades in mid air, making them explode prematurely.

Pros -The quick, hard impact of a rocket is the easiest way to die in TF2, this makes it hard for anyone to hit the Heavy with indirect fire from the front. It also carries on the depowering of splash projectiles started by the Pyro, as a lot of experienced TF2 players go that route. It meshes neatly with the spray and pray style of the heavy, allowing him to blanket the area the rockets are coming from. And it'd look pretty damn cool.

Cons - Soldiers and Demos will complain. At least during the first week when everyone's a Heavy (but hell, it was hard for spies when the Pyro update rolled out too. Someone pointed out that a Soldier would be a little peeved if he couldn't fire back when a Heavy concentrates fire on him, but I say "learn to rocket jump" also a Heavy is firing at you that much, you're already dead.

Verdict - Cautious optimism. This could really work, it’s a subtle approach, but it gives the Heavy a little extra defence against rockets and grenades. He’s still vulnerable to snipers, but then he is with a medic too. he's supposed to be. Plus, once again, it’s got to be cool looking.

Disadvantages - I generally think it's better if these are sorted out in playtesting, when the effectiveness of the weapons can be analysed properly. But, in keeping with the idea of not giving extra advantages to a medic accompanied Heavy, I think perhaps he shouldn't be able to be healed when he's firing. This might seem alarming to some, but it makes players who chose the interceptor more tactical, and also encourages good medicing. What do I mean by good medicing? Well I could fill a whole article with this, but sufficed to say there are a fair few medics who just stick to one Heavy and heal him constantly, which is fine if you're that guy, but less fine if you're standing next to that guy whilst on fire.

So that's that, my suggestions for the Minigun, please feel free to comment and justify the time I've spent here.

This post is for anyone who might stumble across this blog and be unaware of the game Team Fortress 2 and/or the Control Point podcast.

Team Fortress 2 is a first-person-shooter for the PC & console. It uses an original and utterly beautiful stylistic animation instead of attempting to portray gross realism.
Briefly, Team Fortress 2 is an online battle between two teams. Each player may choose from one of nine classes: The Sniper, The Spy, The Heavy Weapons Guy, The Soldier, The Scout, The Pyro, The Demolitions man, The Engineer and The Medic. Each with its own unique set of weapons, roles, voices and animations.

If someone had asked me what Control Point was in October 2007, I would've told them it was a Team Fortess 2 podcast.
If someone were to ask me what Control Point was right now, my answer would you terms like "gaming experience" , a "community of people"... "not xbox live".

Not only is Control Point a group of really nice people, it's a group of people who pride themselves on that reputation. Having the privelege of playing with these people has vastly extended the lifespan of Team Fortress 2 for me, and others.

Based on a suggestion from Openedge, I got rid of Fraps last night and reinstalled Xfire, and began playing around with its video capture functionality, which not only doesn’t share the 30-second limitation of the free Fraps utility, it saves videos in a more compressed format as well. It seems to work pretty well on top on Vanguard – the framerate hit while it’s running is noticeable but I can play through it pretty easily. Bizarrely, I also tried recording a few sessions of Audiosurf and the degradation in the game’s performance is just gigantic – it’s totally unplayable with video capture on, even at stupidly minimal settings and screen resolution. Aside from that, I’d never really looked seriously at Xfire before but between the client and the web tools it’s actually extremely nifty. It’s got text and voice chat, can capture screenshots or videos, maintains a friends list and you can (I think) launch your games from it. I’d signed up when I bought Supreme Commander but I never used it and eventually uninstalled it. I’m glad I took another look.

Anyway, bottom line is, I’m looking to put together some kind of nifty video for Vanguard. I don’t have a real plan beyond that yet, but I’ll be writing about any progress I make. I have this vision of a Vanguard music video set to something by Blue Oyster Cult…

Voyages of Vanguard posted a blockbuster interview with developer Silius this week. I haven’t even finished listening to it yet – it’s over two hours long and contains loads of great information judging by the 30 or so minutes I’ve digested thus far. As always, VoV is a cornerstone of the Vanguard community, and anyone even vaguely interested in Vanguard should be listening to the show. I’ve also been listening to Massively Speaking, a new podcast from Massively hosted by world-renowned game journalist Michael Zenke, which digs into the top couple of MMO news stories each week and is also well worth listening to. For that matter, in the unlikely event that anyone reading here hasn’t already become a daily visitor to VirginWorlds, I highly recommend checking that site out – it’s loaded with MMO news and in the hub of MMO podcasting on the internet.

Last night was supposed to be a Vanguard night but since I spent much more time Tuesday night in Telon, I blew my game time on Team Fortress 2 instead. Heartless had a little bit of a rant earlier this week about the achievements and unlockable weapons in the game; apparently there are ‘achievement servers’ where people – sissies – go to farm achievements (cheat, basically, to get the unlocks.) I agree with his reasoning, but I’m not convinced it’s actually much of a problem in this case, since while there are certainly achievements that are very difficult to get, unlocking all the new stuff doesn’t require you to get absolutely every one, and lots of them are rather easy to get. I managed to get all three Pyro unlocks by playing for about seven hours after coming in very, very cold. And I’m not very good, so I imagine a skilled Pyro player could have gotten them all in considerably less time.

I think that people cheating the achievement system, while lame, isn't really a game-breaker in this case simply because the TF2 unlocks are so easy to get even when not cheating. So I just don't see that it's a real issue.

UPDATE: Heartless himself has pointed out to me that the Medic unlocks, when originally released, were much harder to get, and that with the release of the Pyro pack the number of achievements needed for each unlock was lowered substantially. This makes his issue with this process much more legitimate. I wouldn't go so far as to say it's fixed, but it should at least be less of a problem moving forward. I do agree with him that a server rating system of some kind would be very valuable.

I should also note that I'm going to go for the Medic unlocks as well, so I may change my mind after I've seen how long that takes. Maybe I'm a better player on the Pyro than I think; I know I'm terrible at the Medic.

Or not really, Nuyan doesn't even have an Apoc. But I just felt like abusing this great quote from one of the last EVE chronicles as a title for this little post. It - did - grab your attention, didn't it? Apologies for posting not as much as intended, I guess that now I finally got some time (holiday, yay!) to write, I should do it.

I finally received the Emperyan Age novel, I'll go start reading that after I've finished my current book (which is quite brilliant). I also ordered Someone's Gaming Life, which I'm also looking forward to and might write a bit about after I've finished it. I should've received it weeks ago, but proxis.be seems to be slacking a bit.

Ah well. I haven't played EVE and Factional Warfare as much as I would've liked yet, so I don't really have much to say about it. Instead of talking about EVE I'm going to look back at my 'to-do-games' list I posted three months ago. Needless to say I haven't played all of them yet, I hope I will someday. I started as promised with STALKER, but I stopped playing it after two days of trying. It was my intention to play it with some mods, but it kept crashing within 30 minutes or so. So I gave up. I'm still looking forward to the Clear Sky prequel.

Second on my list was Assasins Creed, but I skipped it for now as some people persuaded me to start with Vampire: Bloodlines: The Masquarade, which really grabbed me. I played it with a mod that managed to update the resolution of the game to 1680x1050, so it actually looked quite good. It isn't very polished, but in return it got a lot of small details. It actually reminded me of Deus Ex, not as brilliant, not even close, but I can't remember a game that reminded me of Deus Ex as much as this one. But it seems they really rushed the last levels of the game. The places itself don't look too bad, even the storylines continue to be decent, not as brilliant as in the first 10 hours (Jaenette and Therese, brilliant!), but still doable. but you'll end up with quests that just make you slaughter hundreds of baddies in a rather repetive way.

So I was in the final quests. Probably got less than 4 hours to play left, but I stopped. That's more than 2 months ago and I still haven't continued. I don't know, I really want to complete that singleplayer as I'm so close to the end, I hope I'll be in the mood for some repetive boring gameplay for a couple of hours soonish.

After that I haven't really played other singleplayer games. I received my copy of Pathologic, but haven't started butchering yet. I did play a bit of Team Fortress 2 and Trials2: Second Edition lately though, both games are pretty great if you've got a short ammount of time. Espescially Trials2 is great for 5 minutes, after that it becomes very very very frustrating, but I love that game.

Oh, and I found a cool new EVE blog called Drawing Aggro. It's quite good, it's also of a person that was in my EVE corporation PIE Inc for a short while, but except for the name I didn't really remember him, which you can probably blame on my inactivity. Added to my blog list.

And before I forgot. Crazykinux also started an EVE Blog Pack, which I'm part of. Yay! Worth subscribing to in my opinion.
