Not the flashy ex Newcastle winger but the Australian chain of bakeries just to clarify. Laurent has got quite a few stores in Melbourne and just 2 in Sydney, one in Bondi and the other in Manly, where I found refuge on a torrid, windy, rainy day that would have killed any and all optimism. The bakery's lovely little pastries though, did go some way to alleviating the drudgery.

They do classic French pastries and they do it damn well. That's why you fork out 6-7 dollars for a lovely little Charlotte or 3-4 dollars for a perfectly fried beignet. I managed to sample a few pastries together with some friends and was generally impressed with the offerings. The one thing i distinctly remember though, is the chocolate macaroon, which can be had for a dollar eighty. It just fell apart delightfully in the mouth and smacked a chocolatey goodness that had me swooning.

Last night I spent a couple of hours on the phone with D who had called me all the way from Sydney.

Last night I spent a couple of hours on the phone with D who had called me all the way from Sydney. We were toying with the idea of a roadtrip, Sydney-Brisbane at the end of the year simultaneous with my convocation in early December. I am not Australian. Though I think I know more of Australia's touristic sites now thanks to my previous 4 1/2 years there then I do about my own country. I still recall how I was reduced to being speechless when one of my visiting friend from America came by earlier and we had drove up to a historical site that we were both visiting for the first time in Malaysia and she was asking me about the origins and history of the area and all I could do was say "let's go read the information board!"

Anyway, our plan for this Great Australian Outback isn't so much of an "outback" because that will involve going through the bushes (insert image of 4WD racing through the desert kicking up sand as it cruises by) risking lives treading on rattlesnakes and finding a black widow in your timberlands. It's more of like a scenic beach drive (and how perfect would the season be for it at that time!)

There is only one problem though

The identified participants so far is D's girlfriend (who is also a long time friend of mine), D and myself. Of course at a glance there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, 3 20-somethings squashed in an pickup truck and making a road trip up the Pacific Highway. But the wise old man didn't say "three's a crowd" for no apparent reason. Especially when you share such a complicated friendship as D and I have.

Being squashed in a pickup truck for hours on end won't be a problem, but doing the same on an inflatable matress in a tent? Uh... that is precisely the problem.

D: .. and i've got quite a large inflatable mattress we could use in the tent..
me: wait. inflatable mattress? have you ever tried lying down on those things before? it's like you're floating..
D: on air?

Give me an inflatable mattress in a tent with a handful of stangers any day, just don't put me in a tent with a couple (of whom one might have an expressed feelings towards me) and expect me to fall asleep as soon as my head hit the inflatable pillow.

This image was taken at the base of the Harry Seidler designed Australia Square building in Sydney. We started to take images for the new exhibition on modernism in Australia when the initial work was being done on the content for the show. We thought it would be great to revisit some of the important city sites that were influential in this era and look at how they are represented from a contemporary perspective. After starting this project we thought it would be great to see how others represent modernism today so we started a group on Flickr called Modern Times: modernism in Australia.

We have been receiving some great photos in this group and have started to blog these on Photo of the Day too. If you have some images that you would like to contribute we would love you to join.

We'll be giving a Oneness Blessing between 9 and 10pm, on the steps between Victoria Park and the University of Sydney.

The United Nations International Day of Peace is a day of global ceasefire and non-violence, and you are cordially invited to spend an hour - or more - participating in a series of meditations and vigils to promote peace on the planet.

The Sydney Peace Festival has been conducted since 2006, and is timed to coincide with the International Day of Peace (September 21st) each year.

It consists of three major events :

A 24hr Peace Vigil which unifies all the disparate voices, all the different cultures, occupations and roles in this desire for peace into one voice, one call, one Sydney – showing that our mutual desire for a peaceful existence supersedes any differences which may normally exist in our day to day lives.

A Peace Concert, held in Victoria Park and attended by hundreds of local residents.

Suchmeldung:

But who knows?

I have been a semi-frustrated performer almost all my life. Sure, I have had my fair share of balle

I have been a semi-frustrated performer almost all my life. Sure, I have had my fair share of ballet and piano recitals, school plays, speeches and other things which escape my mind at the moment. But what I really haven't tried is to perform in the streets. In a lot of western cities, begging comes in a lot of forms. Whether they are art camouflaged or magic tricks to entertain. I have seen in the streets: a contortionist, man eating fire, man on a bike on a tight rope, magician playing tricks, a mime dressed in silver paint, chalk artist on the pavement, musicians wearing their didgiredoos and a bit of cloth, singing acrobats, young violinist, ball juggler, man making music with glass beer bottles, etc etc etc.

I am sure each of us have seen them at least once. I say they are all on a league of their own with their performances. Whether it is a silent act, or a scene stealer. I have a sense of respect for them who have guts, courage and (sometimes) unique talent.

These travellers, backpackers, locals, or whoever they are and wherever they come from, they form part of the street scene which makes walking down the street a bit more interesting. They can be a nuisance to some, but really it is your choice whether you want to stop and see them do their thing. Whatever their reason is for doing this, does not really matter (much).

She's done it again.

She calls it a new start. A date's set, the removers are booked and packing begins. This is my mum's hobby - moving. We've been in Sydney for less than 18 months but we're on the road again. Me, Mum and my two brothers.

I have this vision of being forgotten. Somewhere between all the moves, my records get lost in the great void and I loose my identity. No one will be able to tell me who I am, what I'll be or if I'll ever know. You can't live without your idenitity. You can't just be a unknown face.

I hate this city. It's so...uptight. You're on a treadmill that doesn't care if you struggle to keep up as long as it's going as fast as everyone else's. So maybe moving won't be bad this time. Still I feel like screaming.

A bit.

She's doing it again and I wish could make myself believe that it's the last time. But I can't. Mum's always been a wanderer since I can remember. We've all become one too because of her.

I'm on my bed, listening to Kelly Clarkson on my iPod. Drowning out the noise downstairs. Andrew and Mum are shouting. I have this hollow feeling, like I know it's going to end up bad this time. Not that it doesn't every time but this time-

A door's slammed. I think Andrew's left. Mum's still shouting.

If Andrew leaves us for good... I think I'll scream for real.

I am a gypsy. A girl at school called me that two years ago. When I told her how many times we've moved she gave me a strange look and said, "You're the real gypsy, Anna."

Yeah. I am. Not by choice but I am. I'm the gyspy girl.

This image was taken at the Summit Restaurant which is located on the 47th floor of the Harry Seidler designed Australia Square building in Sydney. The Summit restaurant kindly allowed us to spend some time up there to document how it looks today. It underwent refurbishment in 1999 and the modernist history was considered highly amongst the brief, including the inclusion of these white Eero Saarinen tulip chairs.

The Museum photographers revisited city sites that were influential in the modernist period and documented them on how they look and how they are being used in a contemporary way. This was taken to coincide with the new exhibition on modernism in Australia.

Mal sehen was der Tag morgen so bringt.

Phew! I've had a great day, despite the poor weather, at the Stampin' Up! Sydney Regional training in Darling Harbour today. One of the many fun things we do at training are "swaps". This means we make a stack of cards and we "swap" them with each other. When you look at someone else's swap you suddenly find out new ways to use stamps or a particular stamp set you had never thought of before. It's great fun!

This was my swap ...

On the back of each swap we put our "recipe" for creating the swap card. My recipe looked like this:

Project Recipe

Stamp Sets: Life Definitions (112528); Floral (108811); Everyday Flexible Phrases (108785)

Ink: Purely Pomegranate (109011)

Paper: Purely Pomegranate (111853); Purely Pomegranate Textured (108694); Whisper White (106549); River Rock Textured (108694)

Accessories: Round Tab punch (108340); Matt Pack (105826); Satin Ribbon (109863), White Taffeta ribbon (109070), Styled Silver Hodgepodge (111325), Silver eyelet (105319), Crop-A-Dile (108362)

Thank you to everyone who swapped with me! I hope you liked my swap.

Thanks for looking!

Well.. your furtivity is soon to be heading to japan for a well-earned break. Our hiatus is 10th until 29th september, so when you don't see many updates, we're not being lazy, just busy!

Anyhow, couple of dates to keep in mind for the month.

September 12 looks like a crust party at maggotsville - crux, walrora (melb), dining in tuscany, scum system kill and voting with bricks. $8 to get in.

On the 27th, noisecore returns to louies with mainstream, PP flow, BINT, dalit and killjoy. All goes on after midnight.

Last night I went to the NSW finals for MTV kickstart (a band competition), mainly to see The Wahas. I wasn't familiar with any of the other bands (I did see Chaingang once and they were pretty awesome). I liked the first band, the second band's second song was good and the third band were okay (they won because they had more friends in the crowd I'm thinking). Fourth and fifth were Chaingang and The Wahas and they're both really great.

I haven't touched my dslr in a while if you've noticed the lack of photos on my flickr. I've been using my fisheye lomo a lot.

P.S I just changed my hair colour. The red is gone.

Feb 2nd London >> BsAs
Aug 2nd Santiago >> Sydney
date tbd Sydney >> Auckland
date tbd Christchurch via Sydney >> Singapore
date tbd Singapore >> London

Feedback: Unfortunately in the UK there is no "cancellation only" cover since airline cancellation penalties are so high. We often have a request for it, but unfortunately it`s not something any insurer will offer, I guess if they did it would be prohibitively expensive, plus all our Travel insurance in the UK includes this cover anyway (but only for medical reasons covered by the policy).
