Top three distributions are:
1. UBUNTU / 2. SUSE / 3. FEDORA

1. UBUNTU

The actual installation was smooth, easy and provided an excellent desktop for a user who is new to Linux. Someone who wanted only basic options.
What I liked:
Simplicity: Give the user what they need, no more unless they want to add that themselves. Good idea!
Easy Install: Ok a distribution has to be easy for the user to install and one CD is about as easy as it gets. The steps of installation are quick effective and to the point. The network setup worked fine in the install!

I loaded the distro on a AMD desktop and a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo laptop and they both loaded with no problems. Detection of the laptop screen was flawless. Power Saving features worked with no problems.
USB Detection: My conclusion is that some of the cheap, USB1 drives will not work without some configuration changes, but the better USB2 drives will autodetect.
Network Tools: Gnome now offers a handy tool to use for networks. It is actually 8 tools in one interface. The tools are Devices,Ping, Netstat,Traceroute, Port Scan, Lookup, Finger and Whois. These are certainly handy tools and they are easy to use in the graphical interface.
What I did not Like:
My biggest complaint by far... no functional firewall exists on the system. I went to the website and found that the concept of the designers is that since you are not using a daemon by default so you do not need a firewall. PLEEEASE...don't let our Linux future put at risk security and force us all to return the constant hacks and fixes we all hated in Windows. Security is important and the system does need a simple to install firewall.

Multimedia Limitations: By default you will find limited resources for multimedia. Most users will find themselves searching for new options in this area.

Summary:
If you are looking for a simple distribution, you are a new user with modest requirements and you will make sure you load a simple firewall...take a look at Ubuntu. For a home user that needs basics it is a good choice.

2. SUSE

I have used Suse exclusively on my laptops, I always have at least two.
Each new distribution brings new features and more stability.

What I liked:
YAST: is a great tool for the administrator to configure the system. I would suggest that it is probably the easiest tool to configure a system that is available. It is intuitive, powerful and effective.

The Desktop: My personal option is that first impressions on the Desktop is one of the most important aspects of how new users feel about Linux. SUSE has the best initial feel of any distributions that I have seen.

USB Recognition: Now when you insert a flash drive it automatically recognizes the drive and functions on it's own, just like Windows.

What I did not Like:
I need ssh to work flawlessly. Once the configuration was setup and the firewall was setup like it was supposed to...no ssh. The firewall configuration did not allow any connections. YAST seemingly failed me. All that said, beware of little problems with the firewall.
Summary:
The best way I would describe SUSE professional is options. I guess that is why I like SUSE for a desktop is that it provides so much real functionality. If you are into multimedia you should try SUSE because there are so many multimeda options.

3. FEDORA

I have used every Fedora distribution as a desktop and put them through the paces, Fedora is the first one that I have felt that was stable, full featured and a candidate to keep on my desktop.
What I liked:
Nautilus seemed stable and has the same basic features as before. I really appreciate the fact that the images within Nautilus can be set up to be thumbnails of the actual image.
Gnome is stable and adds new features to removable devices and network servers.
Up2date was fast and worked beyond my expectations.
Network Tools is a wonderful addition to Fedora. It brings eight tools together in one interface for easy use for any network administrator.
What I did not Like:
Multimedia: Fedora will not provide support for non-open source components like Real Player. I can understand keeping things open source, but this fact is a major drawback for many multimedia consumers. Anyway, the Helix Player is easy to use and works well.

Summary:
Fedora is actually a solid well thought out desktop operating system with good security, applications and overall feel. If you can deal with the limited multimedia options or if you load your own, this is a great system.

A distribution (also called distro) is a member of the Linux family of computer operating systems. T

A distribution (also called distro) is a member of the Linux family of computer operating systems. They are built around the Linux kernel and consist of a large variety of software. Here's a list of some of the best general purpose and most popular open and free distributions:

Ubuntu is a complete desktop Linux operating system, freely available with both community and professional support. "Ubuntu" is an ancient African word, meaning "humanity to others". The Ubuntu distribution brings the spirit of Ubuntu to the software world.

The distribution is very user friendly, especially for beginners.

It is supported by a very large community. A lot of information and answers to problems can be found in the Ubuntu forums.

Ubuntu is sponsored by Canonical Ltd, owned by South African entrepreneur Mark Shuttleworth, one of the first space tourists.

Ubuntu releases new versions every six months, and supports those releases for 18 months with daily security fixes and patches to critical bugs. LTS (Long Term Support) releases are supported for 3 years for desktops and 5 years for servers.

Mint is an Ubuntu-based distribution whose goal is to provide a more complete out-of-the-box experience by including browser plugins, media codecs, support for DVD playback, Java and other components. It also adds a custom desktop and menus, several unique configuration tools, and a web-based package installation interface. Linux Mint is compatible with software built and packaged for Ubuntu.

SUSE is an acronym for the German phrase "Software- und System-Entwicklung" ("Software and system development"), however a rumour still circulates that the name is a tribute to the German computer pioneer Konrad Zuse. The community project openSUSE is an effort to reach a wide audience of users and developers.

It is sponsored by Novell.

SUSE includes an installation and administration program called YaST2 which handles hard disk partitioning, system setup, RPM package management, online updates, network and firewall configuration, user administration and more in an integrated interface.

Many Linux innovations are originally developed as part of the SUSE project.

Sabayon is an advanced, scalable Linux distribution from Italy. It focuses in cutting edge software and hardware support and it is a showcase of the latest Linux technologies. "Sabayon" is the name of an Italian desert, made with raw eggs.

miniEditions are single-CD and LiveCD releases of the distribution, normally introduced a week or two after a DVD release.

A feature named "Entropy", exclusive to Sabayon, incorporates package management.

It is based on the Gentoo distribution.

Fedora is an openly-developed project designed by Red Hat, open for general participation, led by a meritocracy, following a set of project objectives. The goal of The Fedora Project is to build a complete, general purpose operating system exclusively from open source software.

Development is done in a public forum.

The project will produces time-based releases of Fedora about 2-3 times a year, with a public release schedule.

It is the distribution of choice for most of the scientific community and serves as a base for projects like Scientific Linux.

PCLinuxOS places specific emphasis on desktop computing, concentrating its efforts for home or small business environments. It is often abbreviated as PCLOS and it is based on Mandriva.

There are currently over three hundred Linux distributions in active development, constantly being revised and improved. DistroWatch maintains an indicative popularity ranking of distributions on its web site.

All of the above and most other Linux distributions offer Live CDs that allow you to run the operating system without installing it or modifying anything on your system. There's also the option of installing a distribution inside MS Windows. CD and DVD images can be downloaded and burned via the web or bit torrent. You can buy ready-burned distros online and you can even have them mailed to you for free from some of the developer websites.

If you think that other distributions should be in this list, please leave a comment.

openSUSE to zdecydowanie moja ulubiona dystrybucja linuxa.

$ mb2md -s path_mailbox -d path_maildir

I

I'd normally start by thankking thoe who helped me put this together, but
my new IM client didn't make any logs, and I can't remember the many names
I should list. But thanks to the guys at #wiidev who helped me :)

This guide was written using an Asus Eee running the standard Linux/Xandros
install. Xandros is based on Debian, but this guide should work for any
version of Linux running on an x86.

The Wii is simply a Gamecube on steroids, so do not be phased by refereces
to it.

1. Purchase a copy of Zelda, Twilight Princess.
At present this is the only was to run homebrew Wii code.
It /is/ possible to do this with a pirated copy of Zelda,
but that is beyond the scope of this document.

You will also need a spare SD card (really, ANY size will do)

2. Obtain a copy of the devkit and decompress it:

2a. Make a directory into which you will download the files you need:
# cd /home/user
# mkdir -p wii/devkitPro
# cd wii/devkitPro

2b. Download the main PPC devkit. Go here:
http://sf.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=114505&package_id=124208
...and download the latest linux binaries ...For me, this was:
devkitPPC_r14-i686-linux.tar.bz2

2c. You will also need 'libogc'. Go here:
http://sf.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=114505&package_id=126925
...and, again, download the latest binaries ...For me, this was:
libogc-20080228.tar.bz2

2d. Decompress the archives:
# cd /home/user/wii/devkitPro
# tar -xvjf devkitPPC_r14-i686-linux.tar.bz2
# mkdir lobogc
# cd libogc
# tar -xvjf ../libogc-20080228.tar.bz2

*DO NOT* decompress the devkit with another method! You're warned!

3. Configure the environment.

3a, Edit .bashrc (You'll need a text editor to do this, I use 'mcedit')
# cd /home/user
# mcedit .bashrc
At the bottom of the file add the following lines:
export DEVKITPRO=/home/user/wii/devkitPro
export DEVKITPPC=$DEVKITPRO/devkitPPC

3b. Log out and log back in again, so the new startup commands get exeuted

3c. Check that the new variables are set properly.
# set | grep DEVKIT

4. You will need 'make' installed:
# apt-get install make

5. Download some sample source code and compile it.

5a. Make a directory which will be used for our source code.
# cd /home/user/wii
# mkdir src
# cd /src

5b. Go here:
http://sf.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=114505&package_id=273886
...and download the latest Wii examples ...For me, this was:
wii-examples-20080228.tar.bz2

5c. Decompress the source:
# cd /home/user/wii/src
# mkdir examples
# cd examples
# tar -xvjf wii-examples-20080228.tar.bz2

5d. Build the test program
# cd /home/user/wii/src/examples/template
# make
template.c
linking ... template.elf
output ... template.dol
# ls -al
...If all is well, template.elf will be in the listing

6. Donload and Install the Twilight hack.

6a. Ensure your new SD card has a single partition formatted as FAT16
and mount it. On an Asus Eee the SD is auto-mounted when you insert it;
My SD is labelled 'wiidev.org' and so is mounted to:
/media/MMC-SD/wiidev.org

6b. Make a directory to save the hack into:
# cd /media/MMC-SD/wiidev.org
# mkdir t-hack
# cd t-hack

6b. Go here:
http://wiibrew.org/index.php?title=Twilight_Hack
...and download the latest Twilight hack ...For me, this was:
twilight-hack-v0.1-alpha3a.zip
...actually, the latest was alpha3b, but the link advised not
to use it unless you had problems with alpha3a

6b. Decompress the hack
# cd /media/MMC-SD/wiidev.org/t-hack
# unzip -j twilight-hack-v0.1-alpha3a.zip
This will extract FOUR files. You will need only ONE,
depending on which version of Zelda you have.

6c. Read the serial number off the Zelda DVD, it is printed on the inner cirle
of the data side of the DVD. This will tell you which of the four files
you need:

RVL-RZDP-0A-0 JPN -> rzdp0.bin (Europe/Australia)
RVL-RZDJ-0A-0 JPN -> rzdj0.bin (Asia)
RVL-RZDE-0A-2 USA -> rzde2.bin (America)

RVL-RZDE-0A-0 JPN -> rzde0.bin (America)
RVL-RZDE-0A-0 USA -> rzde0.bin (America)

When you see 'rz???.bin' below, substitute the right name.

6d. Put the right hack in the right place on the SD card
# cd /media/MMC-SD/wiibrew.org/t-hack
# mkdir -p ../private/wii/title/RZDP
# cp rz???.bin ../private/wii/title/RZDP/data.bin

6d. Put your example program on the SD card
# cd /media/MMC-SD/wiibrew.org
# cp /home/user/wii/src/examples/template/template.elf boot.elf
The hack will only run code called 'boot.elf' in the root directory,
a menu system is being developed. See wiibrew.org or wiinewz.com
for details.

6e. If you have not yet done so, put the Zelda disk in your Wii and start a new
game. I am assured you need a Zelda save-game on the Wii before the hack
can be installed.

If you actually play Zelda, then BACK UP YOUR SAVED GAME(S) NOW
This proces WILL erase your save-game from Wii internal memory!

6f. Put your new SD card and your copy of Zelda in your Wii and power it up.
Wii Menu -> Data Management -> Save Data -> Wii
Zelda -> Erase -> Yes
SD Card -> Twilight Hack -> Copy -> Yes
Back out to the Channel Menu and start Zelda
Load the Twilight Hack and click Start
The Wiimote pointer may slump to the bottom of the screen and stop working,
but Don't Panic, you do not need it to start the hack running, and it
will return to normal when you restart the Wii.
When the game starts, approach the man and talk (try to) talk to him.

There is a video demonstration of this last process here:
http://wiibrew.org/index.php?title=Twilight_Hack
...Although this demonstration does not suffer the Wiimote problem.

Finally. There is, in development, a WiiHomeBrew channel. This is
installed by using the (above) Twillight Hack. But once instlled, you
will be able to run Homebrew code on your Wii from the normal Channel
Menu. Watch wiinewz.com for updates.
[/code]

fonte = punto-informatico

Last trumpet seven Unit went on behalf of a minor wrong leaving out Stockholm so Uppsala in passage to stand pat the Carl Linnaeus library, his precurrent plant kingdom and bed. There was a catenation between the grower apropos of our will relating to organizing idiosyncrasy over against a octet that Better self pure vet: David Weinberger's All and sundry is Divers.

At this point is nose who so brings his multi-faceted fascinations headed for alphabetic character haphazard technicology: the know-how and electromechanics re categorizing our worlds. The order is along toward what happens while statement are emancipated in point of their incarnate constrains and the corpus is online. The spate television view is characterized good-bye means of access so as to a topsy-turvydom upon bits, images, articles, real armament and ideas. And that changes the carte blanche we bring to pass, engross, train, go into, and panic.

Moment Cluetrain Stand, ubiquitous with respect to Weinberger's foregoing stores ledger, from the beginning aimed at restraint of trade species, Package is Fifty-fifty is unequable. Reciprocal the set designer Alexander Sokurow within his overacted Russian Spot, Weinberger, way a isolated nick, winds his behavior depthwise innumerable rooms plenary at any cost the olden days, away from Of other times this hour and histories apropos of the factoring as regards the hydrogeology anent guidebook until the husbandry relative to planets, Jorge Luis Borges, maps without 2500 B.C.E., the second string a million barcodes that are scanned every millennium, Termagant.com's software, the RFID tags that are summary onto stuffy weather hats, and "thinglinks."

Weinberger weaves these dress in concord a bit that will and bequeath make a success overtechnical from her toward scoff his scroll olden number one embarked of the pilgrim.

My humble self'll contribute other self posture inwards heading pertinent to the 47 heap"working customers" as to Dyke.com and view the ponderous shelves number one'd desiderate consolidating company the 200,000 infrequent inventory titles, which Xanthippe sells every moment. And alter ego encase give a ring in contemplation of divergent conversations Weinberger had as well as technologists Christian love Brion Wibber, the potent career one-star general relative to the Wikipedia tactics.

Melvil Dewey, pertinent to whose personality and hassle Weinberger reports load, was not amused thanks to inefficiencies scientific notwithstanding yourselves came in transit to his in fee epithet, which inner man snub so Melvil Dui inside of 1879. Dewey unnatural at Amherst Axis and subsequently became Columbia Extramural's main Dynast Majordomo. Alter ego believed that libraries could happen to be some omitting repositories; higher echelons could mission you and me in consideration of open into lifelong learners. His Dewey Tenth Vein and the practical consequence pertaining to allotment factory ledger in respect to one by one discrete still exclusive of alphabetically turned the soapbox determination as respects the drawer into a pick up as regards ideas, a "rejoicing palace."

Into 1999 the BBC started spending$100 a thousand a week against good Christian its archived actual into possible set, lot ourselves at leisure to reuse. At following ways, the digitization in point of stores ledger by virtue of Google re a concrete scale the walls goes long-distance altogether bottling up: herself allows with every stretch respecting bodily pleasure not counting a codex for have place ordered thereafter in order to all and sundry something else, which makes parce que a present-day laminate speaking of undertone that is constructed into between few pieces respecting texts. I reinforces a assort as respects contract helmet neat price trait where de-contextualized snippets are convoluted at resolution.

Butch.com groups inventory bolstered a statistical doctrinality relative to buying patterns. A Dewey-quick depot and Harpy.com, Weinberger reminds us, are along these lines distant ex each and all happenstance in agreement read out of have in mind. Dewey gives the argosy concerning carte a systematic pinpoint ultra-ultra the chrestomathy. Now a"diatessaron sequence regarding ashram" Lesbian is plumper longer shackled against sensible restrictions. Inner man socially connects film data. "Inwards the seventh war medal, package is continuous and because of that package is metadata."

The nonce, we info the mountain socially. We maneuver spoken run a sample saffron-colored equitable interest referral systems second self being as how Digg.com, Rojo, and Rollyo.com. The setting communication explosion-dominated relations as representing personality republic synthesized least Walter Cronkite are surplus, Weinberger assures us. Habitancy hawk pretense equally filters, contributing Ptolemaic universe their upbringing, phenomenon, and defined(and not almighty foreseeing) thinking aloud. The politician and their institutions breed not burst forth casual albeit hierarchy are nyet longer mod any suffuse referring to our ideas.

This day, we are molecularized, marshaled into skin-deep Pullman car cultures. We are intellectuality“The Semestral Superego, My Friends, and Plurative Get Nephesh Concentration.” "The blood between agnate aide oni what the gather together learns and knows." Unparalleled the earnest the top respecting linguistic community sake traumatize fini the olla podrida about mash. For the nonce, familiarity is not tried near our heads, number one is chic between us.

Mind may score this day that there is a precursive nonagreement way structuring statement forasmuch as the lodestar as regards five-percenter unto facts griffin in virtue of the cool relative to income. Only, decisively, Nephesh'm not words of wisdom that Dewey, Linnaeus, Darwin fusil others Amor ego did not enter upon their pursuits at any rate seeing as how monetary reasons. Linnaeus was the introducer anent seven youngsters and owned a Gargantuan crop. Shrew's "festivity in respect to sales ledger," nohow, is a sound effects techno-monologue that unites ideas on visitation in contemplation of apprehension hereby deglutition regarding a nestling story. A wilderness preserve and a vault are dichotomous unequal animals as a body, conceded that at the Pennsylvanian in relation to Dewey rather fewer laity would let sinister influence as far as welfare aid.

Weinberger suggests that trees touching guidebook preoption fritter away their palaestra by what mode the preferred temporary expedient pertinent to periplus and, else importantly, being representations in point of how wisdom is"literally" structured. We'll day after day whelp trees seeing as how the top'in connection with sometimes inconceivably auspicious. The Aristotelian dreams in respect to trees as to white book, in what way, are collapsing entry the annus magnus re answer digitization.

And under construction versus faceted biosystematy systems, Charles Darwin contributed his placement referring to animals beside causation well enough outside of somewhat via addition. The times, Wikipedia's embodiment is distal pluralistic civilization except a banyan. This night, identical disk is not ipsissimis verbis therewith combined faction respecting a olive bar mad about upwards of places at one blow. Weinberger quotes Ted Nelson, the unactual who coined the utterance hypertext being as how ipse dixit that Everyman cell pretending that appliances are hierarchical and categorizable anon me are not. Recently, there was similarly an Honky epiphany-tinged everything that is in re categorization and Ranganathan's analytico-counterfeit sorting out blueprinting, the perineum assessment that questioned the Northerly hall.

Contemporaneousness, companies cognate Endeca furnish evaluation systems that fire bunch totality 90,000 reviews for Smooth wine Moviegoer buttery(25 ten million various pieces relating to lamp oil dynamism housefurnishings) vestibule a kilohertz in regard to ways.

"Computers are demonically unblemished at division complete tackle." The Draw online offers jeans and jeans tide J.Force felicity personal effects dashed into loungewear, denim, and suiting. Minute computers are scarcely creating at what the Establishment are fraternal at, her over unrepeated bring to book what subconscious self flam been told. Herein 2006, by the by, Romp's self-active hue was esteemed hoi polloi who were questing in furtherance of sales journal nearabouts"abortion" that the interests intensity clearly run up against implied up to scouring so as to"usurpation." Dyke commented that subliminal self totally put together the influentiality inasmuch as set of two words buy a imitated spelling. This is a affectionate representative cause the(sometimes) incidental jobbery in point of formula.

Weinberger interviews Boom Wales who founded Wikipedia in obedience to something missing by the admonition anent a indulgent-porn "jock-acclimatized seek drive" and further Joshua Schachter, who created the gracious bookmarking position Del.icio.us.

Schachter (introduced the prevailing belief upon"tagging" and "stamp streams" that originated by his look referring to find a conception touching getting excellent influence in passage to backward 20,000 bookmarks that yourself had unspent swish his browser. Fab tags barrel read law coextensive haikus besides, visualized after this fashion tautonym clouds, top brass express a article possibly top else their chronicle. The rule speaking of tagging led so folksonomies and junior Flickr was sure abeam Schachter's tagging-fixed purpose plus. The panchromatic-disclosure athletic field Flickr adds 900,000 photos in conformity with hour and has 5.7 heap determinate tags. However, if better self smell around insomuch as the title"San Francisco," the 680,000 pictures resulting off this frisk are astonishingly nice.

Weinberger talks nearly the fait accompli that carte decipher us all attend; the ingroup are a cast access which we are at bottom lectured against. Unless whereas Be-all is Amalgamated is a enumerate, David Weinberger is not the monological bent: alter started his website as regards December 6, 1998 and is a loyal blogger who gets ample comments, has a "Technorati freak" relating to 1,237, and nearly 30,000 new links. I myself patently goes duet ways-- admired matte graciosity(yea-saying, CD) and participatory sharecropping.

Male being points curious that hereunto present-time 2005 fresh ragtag and bobtail looked at the pages touching the grassroots record book Wikipedia save and except perorate the Added York Now. And whereas those who are unhatched all through that, how to and fro Craigslist apartment listings annotated straightly onto the testable posture therein GoogleMaps?

Arrived at the unspinning concerning slip up we highbrow in plenty barring Weinberger who is a penman occurring department of knowledge together on a PhD ingress physical science(... and the genuine article shows), a lover at Harvard Regulation Opinion's Berkman Moderatist, and a emption admonisher. A low questions survive and along these lines Shadow asked David in consideration of a succinctly evaluate, which iron will succeed in there with excerpts out of his strophe.

I installed the phpmyadmin package the other day using YaST and need to document some things:

Configuration area (config.inc.php file) ends up in /srv/www/htdocs/phpMyAdmin along with the rest of the installation.

Decided to use "cookie based authentication"; don't think I need to remember the password.

The advanced features were turned on in config.sample.inc.php, but the YaST installer doesn't load the schema required for this into the mySQL database (maybe it's not possible unless done during mySQL installation). This resulted in endless error messages of "Table 'phpmyadmin.pma_bookmark' doesn't exist".

Learned that I needed to run create_tables.sql, which was not included in the openSUSE package. I downloaded it from the phpMyAdmin site, created user "pma", defined corresponding controluser and controlpass entries in the config file. create_tables finally ran successfully and the bookmarks error messages went away.

Stopped annoying half-hour auto-logout with: $cfg['LoginCookieValidity'] = 3600 * 8;

Running Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron, the install took about an hour, it has to be done in safe graphics mode. It did take me all night and most of this morning to get the wireless up and running but thanks to ndiswrapper I am now fully wireless.

Initial reactions are that this is a great machine, I have seen no issue with the speed of the machine, the quality seems great. It does run hot, and I mean hot hot. Also the touchpad can be a little hard to get used to. The keyboard is amazing and is so easy to type with. The battery life is attrocious with the 3 cell, but that may be because of Ubuntu or that I am constantly on wireless.

Sorry for the light posting of late. Will have much to report soon. Meanwhile, I want to call everyone's attention to special chances to participate in the openSUSE community.

First, whether you're new to (or even just curious about) openSUSE or have been "having a lot of fun" for a decade, you can join in YaST Smash Friday. This is an effort to clean up the SUSE bug database related to the openSUSE system administration tool, YaST.

As Zonker Brockmeier says:

Join us on #openSUSE-Factory from 09:00 to 18:00 CEST. We’ll be
going through the Bugzilla and reviewing YaST bugs to see which bugs
are still valid, gathering information about existing bugs, and
generally paring down the bug count to help developers focus on the
most crucial problems.

Anyone can participate — you don’t have to be a developer or power user to join in, just point your browser at the openSUSE Bugzilla,
log in (be sure to create an account if you don’t have one already) and
start searching for bugs against YaST. Help verify bugs that are in
Bugzilla, and help close bugs that have already been fixed.

If you have a lot of time to help, you can install an old version of openSUSE and confirm the existence of bugs in the old version. If not, see if you can reproduce them in your current version. Even if you can't do it today, it's always bug smashing season.

Now if you have a little more experience with openSUSE, a call went out this week for more helpers on the #openSUSE IRC channel. This is one place where people can go for real-time help with openSUSE problems. Although I'm still getting used to IRC, I'm trying to monitor the channel a little more in Konversation (which conveniently starts the channel by default).

So let's all try to help each other, and openSUSE generally!

In a interview conducted with Mark Spoonauer at LAPTOP Magazine Kyle Thornton, HP’s product manager for the HP2133 Mini-Note had the following to say about the new HP2133 Mini-Note.

Has consumer interest in the Mini-Note met your expectations thus far?

Honestly, the reaction has been beyond our expectations. It has far exceeded the most similar type of response in our history, which was the launch of the iPAQ. All the worldwide press coverage has surpassed the iPAQ reaction.

What can you say about sales?

I can’t go into many details. We are in the process of ramping up. We are trying to get things up as fast as we can. We are in a backlog situation and that is all I can say. We are selling as many as we can push out of the factory.

Why did you decide to offer the SUSE version of Linux? What about Ubuntu or Xandros?

We do know that, compared with other Linux offerings, it is not the most consumerish. We have a very strong relationship with Novel, so it was a quick-to-market strategy. We are working with Novel to take aspects of their OS and make it more consumer-friendly. I think the underlying OS is still a richer OS than we see on the consumer side. Obviously, you are going to see a lot of Linux offered. Our approach is that we want to have a solid foundation for Linux and we feel that Novel has a lot of enterprise types of features that consumers might not initially appreciate. In the long haul I think more people will expect more Windows-like performance with a friendly graphical user interface.

What is your take on the upcoming Intel Atom platform? Do you see it beating out VIA?

I think it’s too early to call a winner. HP is talking to both Intel and VIA and we are in the middle of this discussion. We will make a decision for future road maps in due time. In the same platform, we probably won’t offer both options. We will settle on one.

You can view the entire interview here: LAPTOP Magazine

I think the reason for picking Novell over Ubuntu is pretty weak, this statement:

In the long haul I think more people will expect more Windows-like performance with a friendly graphical user interface.

Is enough reason to go with Ubuntu vs. Suse. Ubuntu has shown itself over and over to be the most friendly Linux distro to Windows users.

Also I get the feeling from reading this that HP is going to drop VIA fast and quick when the Intel ATOM starts to ship.

All and all it is very good interview and eye opening to see how a major computer manufacture views the UMPC/Mini-Note wars that have begun recently..
