<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Ok, so after speaking with the missus, she thinks I should provide more than just links so that anyone who does stumble upon these will get some commentary as well. So... from this point forwards, and yes I do realise this is only day 2, I will include a least a basic breakdown of what the link is for and when I have investigated further, time and inclination allowing, I may even update it with a mini review although I hope most of the articles / pages that I link to should kind of speak for themselves</p>
<h1>Silverlight</h1>
<p><a href="http://weblogs.asp.net/dwahlin/archive/2008/08/18/my-latest-silverlight-articles.aspx">Dan Wahlin updates his SL articles</a> - REALLY worth a looksee<br />
<a href="http://visualstudiomagazine.com/columns/article.aspx?editorialsid=2746">A flyout stackpanel menu control</a><br />
<a href="http://blog.nerdplusart.com/archives/silverlight-particle-generator">Vector based particle generator engine</a><br />
An awesome tutorial on <a href="http://mtaulty.com/CommunityServer/blogs/mike_taultys_blog/archive/2008/08/18/10670.aspx">Messagebox functionality in SL2</a><br />
<a href="http://weblogs.asp.net/dwahlin/archive/2008/06/08/creating-a-silverlight-2-client-access-policy-socket-server.aspx">Creating a Silverlight 2 Client Access Policy Socket Server</a> <q>Silverlight 2 provides built-in support for sockets which allows servers to push data to Silverlight clients</q> :0 I knew this not! I wish to know more<br />
<a href="http://weblogs.asp.net/dwahlin/archive/2008/06/16/pushing-data-to-a-silverlight-client-with-wcf-duplex-service-part-i.aspx">Pushing Data to a Silverlight Client with a WCF Duplex Service - Part I</a> - Erm guess this one continues on from pushing data to SL Client from server.<br />
<a href="http://weblogs.asp.net/dwahlin/archive/2008/06/19/pushing-data-to-a-silverlight-client-with-a-wcf-duplex-service-part-ii.aspx">Pushing Data to a Silverlight Client with a WCF Duplex Service ? Part II</a> - continues on from Part 1 above.<br />
Mike Snow does it again with a stunning demo on <a href="http://silverlight.net/blogs/msnow/archive/2008/08/19/tip-of-the-day-29-creating-a-transparent-draggable-dialog-with-rounded-corners.aspx">creating a transparent draggable dialog with rounded corners</a>. P.S This is a gorgeous effect and may well be kinda useful in line with the Messagebox functionality above.</p>
<p>Crikey, there is just soooo much Silverlight goodiness out there when you start digging.<br />
<a href="http://www.thedatafarm.com/silverlight/journalsample/">windows Journal / scribble app in Silverlight</a><br />
<a href="http://www.codeplex.com/SlideShow">Slide show / gallery</a> and yeah, I know it's old, but it's still pretty cool and with easy to follow <a href="http://korayhk.blogspot.com/2007/12/microsoft-silverlight-photo-gallery.html">instructions on how to set it all up</a></p>
<h1>Standards</h1>
<p><a href="http://blogs.msdn.com/sourceanalysis/archive/2008/08/19/stylecop-4-3-is-released.aspx">StyleCop updated</a> for all those with code style and self documenting code <span style="text-decoration:line-through;">fetishes</span> <span style="text-decoration:line-through;">disorders</span> standards</p>
<h1>UX</h1>
<p>The <a href="http://natural-ui.com/">Natual UI guys</a> are doing some incredible stuff with multi touch Natural Interfaces, <a href="http://nuigroup.com/log/categories/C10/"> and at their community site</a><br />
<a href="http://uxevangelist.blogspot.com/2008/06/windows-7-nui-stepping-beyond-gui.html">Stepping beyond the GUI</a> with Windows surface / NUI tools<br />

<a href="http://www.designinggesturalinterfaces.com/">And more on gestural interfaces</a></p>
<h1>WPF</h1>
<p>Christopher Bennage adds <a href="http://devlicio.us/blogs/christopher_bennage/archive/2008/08/20/building-a-wpf-application-part-3.aspx">Part 3 of his "Building a WPF Application" series</a></p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I've just read (as I always do) the latest <a href="http://amnesiablog.wordpress.com/2008/08/19/unboxing-australias-first-microsoft-surface-table/" target="_blank">Amnesia Blog</a> entry.</p>
<p>And I discover to my most envious level yet, that they have not <strong>one</strong>, but it seems like <strong>two</strong> Microsoft <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/surface/index.html" target="_blank">Surface</a> tables.</p>
<p><a href="http://stusheridan.wordpress.com/files/2008/08/1.png"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-257" src="http://stusheridan.wordpress.com/files/2008/08/1.png?w=300" alt="" width="300" height="177" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://stusheridan.files.wordpress.com/2008/08/2.png"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-256" src="http://stusheridan.wordpress.com/files/2008/08/2.png?w=300" alt="" width="300" height="247" /></a></p>
<p>I will go straight to hell for my level of envy.</p>
<p>Where did they purchase them from, I must find out!</p>
<p>Rumor (and <a href="http://twitter.com/NickHodge/statuses/892939988" target="_blank">twitter</a>) have it that even Microsoft in Australia don't have one yet...and they're Not Happy Jan!</p>
<p>Everyone talks about the iPhone and how cool that is, but this is on a completely new scale in both size and coolness factor.</p>
<p><a href="http://video.popularmechanics.com/services/link/bcpid932579976/bclid932553050/bctid933742930" target="_blank">View a video demo here.</a></p>
<p>The pitch <a href="http://video.popularmechanics.com/services/link/bcpid932579976/bclid932553050/bctid933742930" target="_blank">possibilities</a>, the fun, the...damn it to hell I'm too sick to write more!</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Yesterday, we (<a href="http://www.amnesia.com.au" target="_blank">Amnesia</a>) took delivery of Australia's first two Microsoft Surface tables. We believe they were the first units to ship outside the US. Not often you get your hands on something no one else has seen, so we thought we'd share the grand opening of the boxes...</p>
<p><a href="http://www.amnesia.com.au/blogimages/UnboxingAustraliasfirstMicrosoftSurfacet_F025/IMG_0047.jpg"><img style="border-right:0;border-top:0;border-left:0;border-bottom:0;" src="http://www.amnesia.com.au/blogimages/UnboxingAustraliasfirstMicrosoftSurfacet_F025/IMG_0047_thumb.jpg" border="0" alt="IMG_0047" width="429" height="323" /></a></p>
<p>These crates are heavy. Around 125kg each. "That's a Big Ass Box" quipped one of the designers.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.amnesia.com.au/blogimages/UnboxingAustraliasfirstMicrosoftSurfacet_F025/IMG_0049.jpg"><img style="border-right:0;border-top:0;border-left:0;border-bottom:0;" src="http://www.amnesia.com.au/blogimages/UnboxingAustraliasfirstMicrosoftSurfacet_F025/IMG_0049_thumb.jpg" border="0" alt="IMG_0049" width="429" height="323" /></a></p>
<p>Raiders of the Lost Ark eat your heart out...</p>
<p><a href="http://www.amnesia.com.au/blogimages/UnboxingAustraliasfirstMicrosoftSurfacet_F025/IMG_0050h.jpg"><img style="border-right:0;border-top:0;border-left:0;border-bottom:0;" src="http://www.amnesia.com.au/blogimages/UnboxingAustraliasfirstMicrosoftSurfacet_F025/IMG_0050h_thumb.jpg" border="0" alt="IMG_0050h" width="429" height="323" /></a></p>
<p>No time to waste we borrowed a crowbar and a hammer from the courier to get inside.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.amnesia.com.au/blogimages/UnboxingAustraliasfirstMicrosoftSurfacet_F025/IMG_0053.jpg"><img style="border-right:0;border-top:0;border-left:0;border-bottom:0;" src="http://www.amnesia.com.au/blogimages/UnboxingAustraliasfirstMicrosoftSurfacet_F025/IMG_0053_thumb.jpg" border="0" alt="IMG_0053" width="429" height="323" /></a></p>
<p>The tables we packed very securely and nothing was even slightly scuffed from transit.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.amnesia.com.au/blogimages/UnboxingAustraliasfirstMicrosoftSurfacet_F025/IMG_0059.jpg"><img style="border-right:0;border-top:0;border-left:0;border-bottom:0;" src="http://www.amnesia.com.au/blogimages/UnboxingAustraliasfirstMicrosoftSurfacet_F025/IMG_0059_thumb.jpg" border="0" alt="IMG_0059" width="429" height="323" /></a></p>
<p>Something to hang on the wall to inspire everyone... a big finger :)</p>
<p><a href="http://www.amnesia.com.au/blogimages/UnboxingAustraliasfirstMicrosoftSurfacet_F025/100_1884.jpg"><img style="border-right:0;border-top:0;border-left:0;border-bottom:0;" src="http://www.amnesia.com.au/blogimages/UnboxingAustraliasfirstMicrosoftSurfacet_F025/100_1884_thumb.jpg" border="0" alt="100_1884" width="429" height="323" /></a></p>
<p>Surprisingly, the entire package is very polished. A full-colour instruction manual, protective "kick guards" cables and a Wireless Entertainment Desktop 7000 are included.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.amnesia.com.au/blogimages/UnboxingAustraliasfirstMicrosoftSurfacet_F025/IMG_0062.jpg"><img style="border-right:0;border-top:0;border-left:0;border-bottom:0;" src="http://www.amnesia.com.au/blogimages/UnboxingAustraliasfirstMicrosoftSurfacet_F025/IMG_0062_thumb.jpg" border="0" alt="IMG_0062" width="429" height="323" /></a></p>
<p>The entire table is packed in what is essentially a GIANT ziplock bag.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.amnesia.com.au/blogimages/UnboxingAustraliasfirstMicrosoftSurfacet_F025/IMG_0064.jpg"><img style="border-right:0;border-top:0;border-left:0;border-bottom:0;" src="http://www.amnesia.com.au/blogimages/UnboxingAustraliasfirstMicrosoftSurfacet_F025/IMG_0064_thumb.jpg" border="0" alt="IMG_0064" width="429" height="323" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.amnesia.com.au/blogimages/UnboxingAustraliasfirstMicrosoftSurfacet_F025/IMG_0065.jpg"><img style="border-right:0;border-top:0;border-left:0;border-bottom:0;" src="http://www.amnesia.com.au/blogimages/UnboxingAustraliasfirstMicrosoftSurfacet_F025/IMG_0065_thumb.jpg" border="0" alt="IMG_0065" width="429" height="323" /></a></p>
<p>When unpacked, the table has the calibration mat and some other printed materials covering the screen.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.amnesia.com.au/blogimages/UnboxingAustraliasfirstMicrosoftSurfacet_F025/100_1889.jpg"><img style="border-right:0;border-top:0;border-left:0;border-bottom:0;" src="http://www.amnesia.com.au/blogimages/UnboxingAustraliasfirstMicrosoftSurfacet_F025/100_1889_thumb.jpg" border="0" alt="100_1889" width="429" height="323" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.amnesia.com.au/blogimages/UnboxingAustraliasfirstMicrosoftSurfacet_F025/IMG_0070.jpg"><img style="border-right:0;border-top:0;border-left:0;border-bottom:0;" src="http://www.amnesia.com.au/blogimages/UnboxingAustraliasfirstMicrosoftSurfacet_F025/IMG_0070_thumb.jpg" border="0" alt="IMG_0070" width="429" height="323" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.amnesia.com.au/blogimages/UnboxingAustraliasfirstMicrosoftSurfacet_F025/IMG_0075.jpg"><img style="border-right:0;border-top:0;border-left:0;border-bottom:0;" src="http://www.amnesia.com.au/blogimages/UnboxingAustraliasfirstMicrosoftSurfacet_F025/IMG_0075_thumb.jpg" border="0" alt="IMG_0075" width="429" height="323" /></a></p>
<p>Up and running in just a few minutes! There were a few other cool things that came with this and enough code libraries to keep us busy - we'll probably blog some of this in a few days time if we get a chance. We did however have our first app (with our own content) up and running within 20 minutes so we're pretty pumped about doing some R&#38;D this week.</p>
<p>Meantime, staff can't stop walking up to the table and playing with the demos that were included - A big ass table yes... but <span style="text-decoration:underline;">so</span> much fun.</p>

<p style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">From the book "Rocketeers" by Michael Belfiore</span></span></p>

<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;"><strong>Space travel was exciting</strong> to any kid growing up in the late 50's and early 60's, and Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen was no exception. Like millions of American kids, Allen followed the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo missions, and recalled the excitement he felt when the television cart was wheeled into his classroom so that he and fellow students could view the historic events on a black and white TV. Science fiction books fascinated him, like Robert Heinlein's "Rocketship Galileo" which told the story of a group of kids who built their own spaceship; and a visit to the 1962 Seattle World's Fair offered a simulated rocket journey into space in the world's first "Spacearium."<span>  </span></span></span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">As a kid, Allen built dozens of model rockets and even tried his hand at building a homemade rocket of his own out of an old lawn chair (it melted:-).<span>  </span>And he was awed by science fiction stories that made the big screen, among them 2001: A Space Odyssey, which he saw at Seattle's local Cinerama theater.</span></span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;"><span> </span></span></span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">So when brilliant inventor Burt Rutan introduced the idea of a low cost suborbital spacecraft, Paul Allen was very, very interested.</span></span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">The relationship between the billionaire and the inventor began with a different business venture, but by the Spring of 2000, when Burt Rutan felt that his idea was ready for funding, he asked for a meeting with Paul Allen and told him about the spaceship he was designing. Allen responded with a handshake and an enthusiastic---"Let's do it."</span></span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">""I always had in the back of my mind, would I ever have the opportunity to do something in a space-related initiative? Allen recalled. "And so when the SpaceShipOne opportunity came up, I was very excited to pursue it."</span></span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">From Dan Linehan's "SpaceShipOne: An Illustrated History"(p. 19)</span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">And the rest is history. The Allen-funded SpaceShipOne soared into space, and on October 4<sup>th</sup>, 2004, it became the first privately funded spaceship to make it into suborbital space twice in two weeks with an equivalent weight of 3 people, thereby winning the Ansari X-prize. It also thereby effectively jumpstarted the commercial space travel industry, something which had previously been thought so impossible that it had a "giggle factor."</span></span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">On that October 4<sup>th</sup> date, back in mission control, as SpaceShipOne was still floating in space, Paul Allen shook another hand---the hand of billionaire Richard Branson---who purchased the rights to Allen's spaceship development program for his own commercial "spaceline," Virgin Galactic.<span>  </span>The handshake symbolized the next great step in the commercial space travel industry---as "Rocketeers" author Michael Belfiore commented, "That moment marked the end of the beginning of the commercial space age." </span></span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">And on July 28, 2008, just a couple of weeks ago, the reality of private space travel---of ordinary people becoming astronauts and sailing off into space---just got closer with the unveiling of Virgin Galactic's mothership, Eve, otherwise known as WhiteKnightTwo. <span> </span>The WhiteKnightTwo, a beautifully designed carrier aircraft, will be launching rocket SpaceShipTwo and thousands of private astronauts into suborbital space in the near future. </span></span></span></p>

<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">In fact, if you have a couple hundred thousand dollars (or A LOT of Virgin Atlantic frequent flier miles)*, and a dream to be an astronaut, you can sign up to be a passenger on a Virgin Galactic spaceflight right now:</span></span></span></p>

<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;">It's all pretty exciting when you think about it, and it had me wondering what space travel might look like, say, 50 years from now.  So just for fun, I thought I'd write a story about an astronaut from the year 2058, who is also, since spaceships are so common at that time, basically just an ordinary businessman on his way home from work.</span></span></p>

<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;"><strong><span style="font-size:medium;">Businessman Bo Nunez stepped inside the gleaming spaceship</span></strong> and trudged wearily down the narrow aisle leading to the first class section of the 8 pm Virgin Galactic Transport Shuttle. It had been a long day.</span></span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">He looked forward to getting home. Although the commute to his condo on the Rutan Community Moon Colony was a long one---roughly an hour's journey---he did not regret the purchase of his new dream home there last year in 2057.<span>  </span>The price was admittedly astronomical, but it was a nice little community---the amenities were unparalleled, and the views---well, the views were literally out of this world.</span></span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">He sank down into his plush leather seat, buckled his seat belt and settled in for the ride home. Donning headphones, he began to listen to a song he designed last night on his computer with the help of the latest Drumcore software. He had become a pro at mixing tracks---and by blending a little U2, Blues and drum solos from his favorite artists, he had come up with a pretty decent song. In fact, the recording would have been perfect were it not for the vocalist. He chuckled as he heard his own voice. "OK, so I guess I won't quit my day job," he laughed.</span></span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">He pulled his Kiha* out of his shirt pocket and gently set it down on the pull-down table in front of him. Immediately the surface of the table began to shimmer and ripple as if it were made of water. Multicolored tropical fish appeared to swim deep into the surface of the table and across the screen in 3D, as the scene reflected the underwater beauty of Bo's favorite dive spot in Palau. This was clearly his favorite screen saver, this underwater video that Bo took last summer, and it always put him in a good mood after a hard day's work.</span></span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">"Hello, Bo" said a soft, pleasant voice coming from the table. "Where do you want to go today?"</span></span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">"To the moon, Alice!" he thought, remembering the ancient Jackie Gleason reruns that were so popular in the 2040's. But instead he smiled and said:</span></span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">"How about checking today's headlines?" </span></span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">Immediately the surface of the table changed to reveal the top stories and photos of the day. One headline in particular caught his eye:</span></span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">"The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center Changes Its Name." </span></span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">AP Seattle, Washington</span></span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">"The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center has announced that it is changing its name and its focus due to the recent development of the Cancer/HIV vaccine.<span>  </span>Since the vaccine was discovered a few years ago, these diseases have been effectively made obsolete in the civilized world. </span></span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">The newly renamed Fred Hutchinson Research Center will now merge with neighboring charitable organizations; The Allen Institute for Brain Science, founded by Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen and the Gates Foundation, founded by Microsoft's Bill Gates and his wife Melinda, to refocus its efforts and collaborate its resources in order to bring the vaccine, along with other recent Allen Institute cures for MS, MD and Alzheimer's Disease, and the latest spinal cord regeneration treatment, to underdeveloped countries.</span></span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">"We are extremely pleased and honored to be a part of this wonderful project," stated Jo Allen Patton, chairman of the Allen Family Foundation. "We are grateful to the remarkable men and women who have developed breakthrough medicines that are now capable of defeating these devastating diseases, and we hope to continue to provide the funding necessary to bring these cures to every person who needs them in every corner of the world."</span></span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">Nunez paused for a moment to absorb the information. "Another scientific breakthrough from the Allen District of Seattle! What a place it must be!</span></span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">"And Paul Allen---I've heard of that guy," he thought. "I wonder what he's doing now?"</span></span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;"><span>                    </span></span></span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">Curious, Nunez did an EVRI<span>  </span>search and discovered that at 105 years old the Microsoft Co-founder had just cut his 4th best-selling rock album. </span></span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">"So he finally broke down and released another set of songs," Nunez thought. He remembered what terrific hits the first three albums had become nearly 20 years ago, but he had heard that Allen hesitated to issue another album.<span>  </span>It was important to him that people remembered him for more than just his music.</span></span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">Right under that headline was an article about Allen and Gates:</span></span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">"Dynamic Duo Strikes Again</span></span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></span></p>

<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">No, we're not talking about ancient comic book superheroes, but about an unbeatable team of philanthropists named Paul Allen and Bill Gates. Not quite a century ago, when the pair was barely out of their teens, they wrote a language that changed the world, and founded a company that is still one of the most successful organizations in the history of business.</span></span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">And now they've joined forces again to take on a new villain----disease.</span></span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">Bill Gates and his wife Melinda have been in the disease vanquishing business since the turn of the century. Through their efforts with the Gates Foundation, the disease Malaria, a horrible scourge that plagued millions of people many years ago has long gone the way of Microsoft's early competitors. But Gates has begun to tackle other dark forces and has taken on a new partner to do it---his old Microsoft partner, Paul Allen.</span></span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">Allen has been on a disease fighting mission of his own for many years. The Allen Institute for Brain Science, a charitable organization that he founded in 2003, has made major breakthroughs recently in combating a number of debilitating illnesses that have plagued the world. The Allen Institute has historically ventured into a number of research projects such as the brain map and spinal cord map, and has published its findings for free, assisting researchers to find cures for diseases in their particular fields. Recognizing that this kind of information-sharing leads to scientific breakthroughs that benefit everyone, other researchers have followed suit, and the speed of progress in fighting these infirmities has taken off like lightning in recent years, most recently leading to cures.</span></span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">The Gates' will now join The Allen Family Foundation and the recently renamed Fred Hutchinson Research Center in bringing these cures for a number of diseases, among them Alzheimer's, MD, Multiple Sclerosis and Lou Gehrig's disease, as well as the recently discovered Cancer/HIV Vaccine and Spinal Regeneration and Regrowth treatments, to countries that currently do not have access to this kind of medicine.</span></span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">May their battle against disease take them to the ends of the earth and to the farthest reaches of space;<span> or, </span>in the words of another Superhero,</span></span></span></p>

<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">------------------------------------------------------</span></span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">This was great news. Bo remembered a friend of his from years ago, a good friend whom he'd lost......."I wish those cures had been around earlier," he thought to himself.</span></span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">He was deep in thought when the seat belt light clicked off and nudged him out of his reverie. Bo looked up from the screen on the table in front of him and gazed out the window. What a view! He could never get used to how beautiful the earth looked from up here.</span></span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">Some of the passengers had taken off their seat belts and were floating around the room, laughing and doing somersaults, and noisily calling each other over to the many windows of the spacecraft to check out the spectacular scenery. When the cabin was full, this was considered bad manners----this bouncing around the room, sometimes bumping into people who just wanted to get home. But tonight, perhaps because of the late flight, the cabin was nearly empty, and there was plenty of room to move around.</span></span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">As many times as he had made this trip, Bo could not resist feeling completely thrilled by this part of the ride. The feeling of weightlessness made him feel, well, even a little giddy, like a kid riding on a roller coaster for the first time. </span></span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">But today for some reason, he was overwhelmed by the feeling.<span>  </span>Maybe it was the stress of the day or the good news he'd just read. Or maybe he had just taken it all for granted for too long. Whatever the reason, today he couldn't resist taking off his seat belt and joining the floaters.  As he released the latch of his seat belt and floated away from the restraint, suddenly Bo Nunez forgot the seriousness of the day he had just had. He forgot his age, his business, his life back on earth. For this moment, none of those things mattered. He was 10 years old again---free---and if he wanted to jump off of his first class leather seat and bounce around the walls of this luxury craft in his business suit, he could care less how it looked to anyone else.</span></span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Times New Roman;"> </span></span></p>
<p style="margin:0;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;">The seat belt sign came on again, much too soon it seemed, and he belted himself in once more for the lightening-fast ride home. He was breathless, elated from his venture climbing around the cabin and he felt a little like a school kid who had misbehaved in class and had gotten away with it.<span>  </span>By the time the Virgin Galactic Shuttle descended upon the Lunar Spaceport and touched down on the surface of the moon, Bo Nunez was in a very, very good mood.</span></span></span></p>

The bad news is that reports of troubles with the superphone appear persist; the good news is that fixing them may be relatively simple.<br />

<div style="padding:0 12px 12px;"><strong>iPhone 3G: Choked by a Chip</strong><br />
A few days ago, I blogged about reports that a lot of iPhone 3G users were suffering from dropped calls and other glitches. I said mine seemed to be fine--and naturally, the moment I said that, it began dropping calls. BusinessWeek is reporting that an Infineon chip inside the phone may be creating problems when the phone switches from 3G to EDGE mode. That raises scary visions of Apple needing to perform a massive recall, but the good news is that the BW story also reports that the company plans to fix the problem with a software update, not a hardware repair. Apple hasn't commented on any of this; let's hope that what it's determined what's going on, it tells the rest of us.</div>

<div style="padding:0 12px 12px;"><strong>Sheraton Gets Surface</strong><br />
Five Sheraton hotels are getting Microsoft's <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/surface/index.html">Surface tabletop computer,</a> in a version that will provide local information, a juxebox-style music player, and information about Sheraton properties. I <a href="http://www.slate.com/id/2167565/">like Surface and think it's one of the more intriguing devices I've seen from Microsoft or anyone else in awhile</a>. But the darn thing (which I first saw demoed in January 2007) is rolling out in slow-motion, and none of its applications so far sound all that spectacular. It's still not clear to me whether it's a Microsoft vanity project or something that might have quite a bit of impact on the way we use computers.</div>

<div style="padding:0 12px 12px;"><strong>In Case of Emergency, Use Twitter</strong><br />
A Chinese citizen journalist picked up by the security patrol at the Olympics used <a href="http://www.twitter.com">Twitter</a> to alert his friends and followers to his predicament. It's the latest example of Twitter being used as a sort of emergency broadcast system, along with the stories of a Twittering American arrested in Egypt and Twittering victims of the Chinese earthquake. Sadly, my immediate response to the news was this: Does the Chinese government know about Twitter, and if not, will they block access to it the moment they learn it exists?</div>

<div style="padding:0 12px 12px;"><strong>Beacon: It's Baaaaaaack...in Court</strong><br />
Facebook is...er, faced with a class-action lawsuit in California over Beacon, the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beacon_(Facebook)">controversial advertising system</a> that linked together Facebook users' activities on multiple sites and alerted their friends to actions such as renting a movie or buying a T-shirt. I'm of two minds here: Beacon as originally implemented was way too cavalier with Facebook users' privacy, but any damage done to users was so minor that I'm not rooting for anyone to milk the company for gazillions of dollars through the class-action suit. If the legal wrangling causes big companies to think twice before getting creative with users' personal data, I guess it'll serve a purpose.</div>

<div style="padding:0 12px 12px;"><strong>Free Software Has Rights Too</strong><br />
The federal appeals court in Washington has ruled in a case involving model-railroad hobbyists squabbling over a piece of open-source railroading software and whether its creators can place limits on its use even though it's free. The court ruled that the fact software is free doesn't mean that anyone's free to use it in ways that its creators don't wish to permit. I love open-source software and am in favor of the people who create stuff having a lot of control over its fate--but I'm also startled that this question hadn't been settled years ago. <em>Of course</em> free software should receive the same legal protections as software that costs money.</div>

<p>When I was preparing <a href="http://homologue.wordpress.com/2008/07/09/thinking-about-what-to-do/" target="_blank"><em>What To Do</em></a> I drew lots and lots of domes, in pencil and biro and colour-coded felt-tip pens. <!--more-->The fifteen domes above are cut out from the script I used for the talk itself, where I'd drawn them in margins to remind me what to copy on the flip-chart as I went along. The different colours are to show me which parts to draw in what order, and they correspond with sentences in the script underlined in the same colours.</p>
<p>I'm talking with <a href="http://cde.cerosmedia.com/Issue-3/1I47c7d415eca1f012.cde" target="_blank">Volume magazine</a> about writing an essay which would use dozens and dozens of these domes in place of words. The live experience of attending the talk itself was a crucial part of the original piece, so I've been looking forward to trying to create a similar effect, or make a similar point, in a transferable medium like writing or drawing. I've got a few weeks to work on this I think.</p>

<p><span style="text-decoration:underline;"><strong><span style="color:#333399;">Roll Printing</span></strong></span><strong><span style="color:#333399;">: </span></strong>A rolling mill is used to press a pattern into sheet metal. You can use a paper stencil to impress a shape or pretty much any flat textured materials (fabric, leaves, paper, wire etc.) to create an interesting pattern.</p>
<p style="text-align:center;"><a href="http://nynyrob.files.wordpress.com/2008/08/rolling-mill.jpg"><img class="size-medium wp-image-96 aligncenter" src="http://nynyrob.wordpress.com/files/2008/08/rolling-mill.jpg?w=300" alt="" width="300" height="225" /></a></p>

<p><span style="text-decoration:underline;"><strong><span style="color:#333399;">Hammer Marks</span></strong></span>: Hammer blows can be used to create an interesting surface. Different types of hammer will give different effects.</p>

<p><span style="color:#333399;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;"><strong>Stamping</strong></span><strong>:</strong></span> Stamps can be used to create all sorts of patterns and also to imprint letters. Stamps are simple devices (a steel rod with the desired shape for imprinting at one end) and can be purchased or home made.</p>

<p><span style="color:#333399;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;"><strong>Reticulation</strong></span><strong>:</strong></span> this involves heating metal and taking advantage of the different cooling rates of an alloy's component substances to create a lumpy, shiny, moonscapey texture. Silver with a high copper content is a good alloy to work with. The downside to reticulated metal is that it is quite brittle.</p>

<description><![CDATA[In this post, I will show how to create sculpted prims from mathematical surfaces. This cannot be do]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In this post, I will show how to create <a href="http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Sculpted_Prims">sculpted prims</a> from mathematical surfaces. This cannot be done inworld, because it requires the production of an image, the <a href="http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Sculpted_Prims_Textures">sculpt map</a>. I will show a small <a href="http://java.sun.com">Java</a> program which produces sculpt maps from 3D surface equations.</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-116" src="http://suzannegraves.wordpress.com/files/2008/08/snapshot_003a.jpg" alt="" width="450" height="264" /></p>
<p>I will not describe sculpted prims in details, you can find information about sculpted prims in the <a href="http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Sculpted_Prims">Second Life Wiki</a>. To apply the techniques described in this article, you will need some knowledge of the Java programming language, and at least how to compile and run a program. You will also need to know how to upload sculpt maps from the Second Life viewer and how to create a sculpted prim inworld. There is also a great tool called <a href="http://www.xs4all.nl/~elout/sculptpaint/">sculptypaint</a>, which allows to create and modify sculpted maps. Sculptypaint will help you smooth the surfaces, or even modify them. Sometimes, I also use Photoshop to correct visible defaults in the sculpt map.</p>
<p>The technique in this program is similar to the technique described in my previous articles. Each point of the surface, in 3 dimensions, is represented by a color (red, green and blue). Each point of the sculpted prim is represented by a color, composed of red, green and blue values.</p>
<p>Here is the program, with my favourite wireflower surface:</p>
<pre style="border-top:1px solid black;border-bottom:1px solid black;padding-top:4px;padding-bottom:4px;margin-bottom:12px;font-size:11px;font-weight:1.5em;line-height:1.4em;">import java.awt.image.BufferedImage;
import javax.imageio.ImageIO;
import java.io.File;
import java.util.Date;
import java.text.SimpleDateFormat;
import static java.lang.Math.*;

public class Sculptor
{
  int IMG_SIZE = 128;

  public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception
  {
    new Sculptor().run(args);
  }

  public Point calc(double u, double v)
  {
    Point p = new Point();
    u *= 2*PI;
    v *= PI;
    double r = (1+sin(2*u)*sin(3*v))/2.0;
    p.x = r*cos(u)*sin(v);
    p.y = r*sin(u)*sin(v);
    p.z = r*cos(v);
    return p;
  }

  public void run(String[] args) throws Exception
  {
    BufferedImage image = new BufferedImage(IMG_SIZE, IMG_SIZE,
      BufferedImage.TYPE_INT_RGB);

    for (int uu=0; uu&#60;IMG_SIZE; uu++) {
      double u = ((double)uu)/(double)(IMG_SIZE-1);
      for (int vv=0; vv&#60;IMG_SIZE; vv++) {
        double v = ((double)vv)/(double)(IMG_SIZE-1);
        Point p = calc(u, v);
        image.setRGB(uu, vv, convertToRGB(p));
      }
    }

    SimpleDateFormat df = new SimpleDateFormat("yyyy-MM-dd-HH_mm_ss");
    String fileName = "sculpt-"+df.format(new Date())+".png";
    ImageIO.write(image, "png", new File(fileName));
  }

  static class Point
  {
    public double x = 0.0;
    public double y = 0.0;
    public double z = 0.0;
  }

  private static int convertToRGB(Point p)
  {
    int red   = (int)(128*(p.x+1.0)) &#38; 0xff;
    int green = (int)(128*(p.y+1.0)) &#38; 0xff;
    int blue  = (int)(128*(p.z+1.0)) &#38; 0xff;
    return red &#60;&#60; 16 &#124; green&#60;&#60;8 &#124; blue;
  }
}</pre>
<p>Assuming you have the Java SDK installed and configured, you just compile and run this program this way:</p>
<pre style="border-top:1px solid black;border-bottom:1px solid black;padding-top:4px;padding-bottom:4px;margin-bottom:12px;font-size:11px;font-weight:1.5em;line-height:1.4em;">javac Sculptor.java
java Sculptor</pre>
<p>This will produce a png file of the sculpt map. Upload this file as a texture in your inventory, create a sculpted object and apply the sculpt map...</p>
<p>Here is the result :</p>
<p style="text-align:center;"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-117" src="http://suzannegraves.wordpress.com/files/2008/08/snapshot_001a.jpg" alt="" width="450" height="323" /></p>
<p>You can open the png file in sculptypaint to see the result before uploading your file. With sculpty paint, you can modify the sculpt map and see the results immediately. With the math surfaces, I usually use it to smooth the surfaces a bit.</p>
<p style="text-align:center;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/suzanne_graves/2741155257/"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3026/2741155257_fb09b5c93d_d.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="325" /></a></p>
<p>I tried several surface equations using <a href="http://mathworld.wolfram.com/SphericalCoordinates.html">spherical coordinates</a>, which gave the following results :</p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/suzanne_graves/2741154929/in/photostream/"><img class="aligncenter" src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3148/2741154929_f42ca87ee0_d.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="400" /></a></p>

<ul>
</ul>

<description><![CDATA[
 When I saw the Microsoft surface demonstration I was saying things like &#8220;wow&#8230;very imp]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span style='text-align:center; display: block;'><object width='425' height='350'><param name='movie' value='http://www.youtube.com/v/rP5y7yp06n0'></param><param name='wmode' value='transparent'></param><embed src='http://www.youtube.com/v/rP5y7yp06n0&rel=0' type='application/x-shockwave-flash' wmode='transparent' width='425' height='350'></embed></object></span></p>
<p> When I saw the Microsoft surface demonstration I was saying things like "wow...very impressive!" and "oh...that's cool"  It wasn't necessarily groundbreaking as many of the ideas of the touch interface are also employed in technology like the iPhone,  the pinch and zoom in particular. But it was very impressive when you could drag photos from one camera to another simply by placing the camera on the table. I'm not sure how often that feature might get used on a day to day basis but it sure makes photo transfers a snap when you need it.</p>
<p>The most useful demo was setting down a credit card and then dragging your meals to it on the touch screen surface. This solves a real efficiency problem in restaurants making it very streamlined in how you select and pay for your meal especially amongst a group of people. This was an example of a technology solving a problem or doing a process better. 2 points Microsoft.</p>
<p>However it is not without potential downfalls. It would fit very nicely into markets like sport restaurants or casinos, but I can't imagine having this screen throwings ads at my face while I eat at the Olive Garden or my local quiet restaurant. And you know they're going to run a ton of ads on it and while I'm eating and I certainly don't want a light up display under me advertising the latest special on mozerella sticks at Chili's.  I already go to the movies and have to sit through TV commercials and a slide show of loud ads before the movie even starts. This Surface technology could be more of the same, and please oh please don't have it make sounds at me too. We learned that lesson with noisy flashy websites. Aren't we already overly video/audio bombarded in society? Remember Minority  Report?</p>
<p><span style='text-align:center; display: block;'><object width='425' height='350'><param name='movie' value='http://www.youtube.com/v/nQbVD5hlddk'></param><param name='wmode' value='transparent'></param><embed src='http://www.youtube.com/v/nQbVD5hlddk&rel=0' type='application/x-shockwave-flash' wmode='transparent' width='425' height='350'></embed></object></span></p>
<p>Tom Cruise annoys me enough let alone this potential marketing dystopia. The idea of successful technology is something that goes beyond being cool or flashy. Apple has recognized the idea of finding niches and doing things better in those niches to serve it's users. Apple saw the mp3 player and knew it could do it better, they saw the cell phone and knew there was a better solution. I'm not sure if Surface is identifying anything that's being done poorly besides the bill paying solution to warrant a business investment for it's price but it raises some interesting new ideas. As the cost of the technology comes down it just may find some useful niches. If not then it just may become more flashy noise in already over stimulated world.</p>

<ul>
<li>Uma caixa de papelão</li>
<li>Uma plaquinha de algum material transparente (vidro, acrílico, etc)</li>
<li>Uma folha de papel sulfite</li>
<li>Fita adesiva</li>
<li>Uma Webcam</li>
<li>Software opensource: <a href="http://nuigroup.com/touchlib/downloads/" target="_blank">Touchlib</a></li>
</ul>
<p><span style='text-align:center; display: block;'><object width='425' height='350'><param name='movie' value='http://www.youtube.com/v/pQpr3W-YmcQ'></param><param name='wmode' value='transparent'></param><embed src='http://www.youtube.com/v/pQpr3W-YmcQ&rel=0' type='application/x-shockwave-flash' wmode='transparent' width='425' height='350'></embed></object></span></p>
