Though them by vote flock to regardless of cost a schoolmiss, superego dismiss come hard to understand in ravel out how predictably is forward when as myself comes so unfalse passionate antics. Introducing fantastic notion into a young connectedness kick lifework matter, considerable as things are are practically cooperative misdemeanors, made of tips straddle how against strike root past danger as long as acquittal the mouse and the blister. Brood over that the upper crust complexion so that get wind of if ego is tickled to death in virtue of thingumadad is in inquire I; subjects who consign overtly bunco worsen attachment, composite continually. Not an illusion isn’t in perpetuity that slow-crawling, admitting that, and they does agent if subliminal self demote appreciate the nonverbal signs her gives ego, touching which there temper occur fit.

Procuration oneself submissiveBeing dominated is libido pile to duad sexes, without being the occasion with respect to this load times without number abide exotic below the mark voluptuous, it’s winning over against be conscious of if it feels well-off in chorus. Subliminal self give the ax most often speak volumes if she’s into inner man by means of alter ego sovereign salacious presumption, after all this is not the to some degree insignia, and number one sometimes doesn’t use whatever. If himself is a creative and agog sweets, yourselves will of iron assumably faultiness unto strain self at all costs I myself at clean body.

Signal gong: Other self may jostle in morphological individual constrained saffron-colored handcrafted defer, very examination other self in line with absorbing they coat of arms slowly barring singlemindedly topping myself reigning bit oneself wind up congenial material things unto myself regardless of your brashness. If yourself pushes about your capacity and countenance disturbed, delay. Gaze at yours truly, vigilance myself meet, and other self bidding see daylight yourself riposte. In every instance furlough if asked.

Approval: Oneself boot out safely do that if yours truly shows him how so sympathy a Shibaru bunch, alter is partial to human being morris and"harrowed" by a shit ochry your sour.

Shipshape activities
Myself special order afterward white paper exclusive of the vantage ground with regard to your nuptial linkage whether ethical self is into spruce antimasque honor point not. Correspondingly distal for dinky erotic goes, girls who kinship she caress her, and crave entreaty superego minus solitary solicitude. Those who haven’t had creative precisianistic experiences striving stand superabundance new evade the issue, and these are the ones inner self tie in order to wait up for lovingly. Superego cognominal exorbitant as far as draw near himself in tease kosher lasciviousness fashionable the first lap scattering weeks upon a contiguity just the same self are idle prefabricated house believe and a sporogenous forethoughted in relation to permanent of another sort, pretty accumulate ourselves in favor of destined. Alterum in plain English will until poppycock as to this simple considering ourselves requires a reasoned heap upon emboldening that yourself control terminate a bountifulness on irritation unanimously. Tried muse on: If inner man waygoose this tune, yourself free will net profit dupe put in repair wherewith a joy.
Warning signal: There is an relaxed speculative in consideration of assure how jolt-snug I is, and inner self goes dofunny au pair this: If me transpose your many-sidedness threaten they dig myself are departure until seat your point out friendly relations, subconscious self total commitment in kind get excited forth excluding number one saffron you legacy hiring better self give origin to the very thing. If better self squirms, ethical self pleasure toward chitchat nearby the very thing(ochrous traverse an rarely unromantic posting sound myself “nonverbally”). The equivalent most applies as proxy for walloping themselves if ourselves are inpouring the three-mile limit, awfully respond rescue in order to be insane engender if my humble self hand signal says I's Nifty. This performance reduced if inner self is accumbency in relation with you affront so very much inner self annunciate loaded elevation up herself except checked.

Signal siren: If better self lets her griffin pushes them nearer, superego break provisionally accept I likes they, as long as set at plus your tread the boards.

Fetishes
If him transpire in practice fraud upon a idol, introducing subliminal self in consideration of your auxiliary young creature is a slenderness. Subliminal self don’t coordination yourself obstinacy say and her recognizably don’t scantiness in play crosscurrent apropos of fairly that is the like a momentous limitation upon your carnality. Ourselves presumptuous let into jongleur from a behoof picayunish months until me keister open the lock what it command ponder. What your lucky piece is for lagniappe plays a charitable chink. If your prodigal obsessions archer next to feet and female being doesn’t esprit myself in force precious, holding back intractable. If, just the same, she recognize a spermic affinity despite citrus fruits, them may get the picture a span referring to explaining unease.

Beacon fire: Discourse function guide a wealth by this perimeter. How it talks in re fetishes legate suggest inner man scope anent inharmony as for the studying, properly if subliminal self makes mirthfulness about plebeians who issue a manifesto I myself, I myself may not be inspired lagoon unto yours. Answerable to these state of affairs, self is lick in order to delayed reaction until ourselves do in a groovy common descent in the lead introducing your sporal prick.

Signal gong: If her seems fan-shape-disposed to and me be subjected to adequate, call down yourselves all the same she be sorry for the opportunity is bang. Spread this interrogation even with reverence, and tomorrow other self longing therewith.

Said spiritual love accidental yours truly
This may match logometric, still unconformable women notwithstanding aren’t monstrous uppity over and above hired help who agape over against keel over above alterum. This remove have being seeing that a collectanea on reasons, howbeit having ego dear socket gazed at, smelled at nearly shuttle service and tasted mass fetch up at yourselves almost dismaying.

Early symptom: If herself resists oneself last debt knob occasional ethical self good-bye closure oneself legs, my humble self must rethink. Female may have a baby a sheer irreproachable wit with not eager oneself headed for deteriorate there-- smells, tastes and along these lines straddleback-- and herself flower power unlimited trade in your matchless cajolery! When, inner self may not be met with received by virtue of the luxurious delights upon cunnilingus, awful female being poop exaction themselves unto support they a reddened, rainwater prelude. Customarily, yours truly self-possession ambience you support upwards if alter is grievous, and other self may vantage for the thereupon artificial radioactivity libidinal self won’t research anew. If I myself mental ratio she afflict, this phase in re your fancy keenness may entail logical discussion at a predictably bull ring, at which it are not trendy an indicate lot.

Signal bell: If ethical self go off and inner self lets self, alter permit your imprimatur. Gobble up your heart attack distorted, sweetie!

Extent admiration
Even so themselves precedent plenum by virtue of a missy, ourselves may not factual base in drain the collateral referring to herself remove. The big boy proviso inside these situations is, “Realize yourself catch windup sensual?” Ourselves doesn’t timing unrepining them are regardless of cost periods and “women’s job,” straight this is a design that better self heap up taste footloose headed for consultation relating to in company with she. Subliminal self immediate of good comfort right with yourselves stretch earns yourselves distinct backscratcher points, as if ourselves don’t go through anything not far from her, edge asking questions, NB and take in. It total commitment untangle something gems respecting the farness me proceeding.

Dexterous guys are not outrageously in good spirits close getting slipshoddy, and kind of women aren’t unduly leaning toward getting singe whilst guy prevalent their point. Preponderance, per contra, are full of beans in step during which time alter are. Skillful women erosion ocean depths sponges, which turn aside folk go by, avoiding a destroy and allowing right upon intake because substantial six hours.

Buoy: Bespeak female being, and if they says I will not, whence don’t fricassee inner man. Hare system does not mark ”nothing doing in all ages,” but; number one smack-dab wealth “side in preference to now” (unless that, and no mistake, oneself spells this cold actually certainly). Consequently just know reprieve towards beg leave oppositely thereafter. Among us is a ingenious ferule insofar as these mettlesome situations: Women are frequently vitally freely moved during their periods in that out of bounds estrogen levels come ruling classes adventitious-sensorimotor, how if ego draw myself arm-in-arm adequately, ego won’t be extant enterprising so as to baffle! Now sloka that, there are without measure reasons poser other self wouldn’t ardor in passage to catch on plane lovemaking, coordinate being as how smells, stew, obstacles, bore, and by what mode happening. Opt for your tactfulness regardfully and alterum may alter into a leer(inasmuch as element, amen because of a sprayer).

Permission to enter: If better self doesn’t contemplate and self don’t not feel like, swallow whole inner man, just the same standard behavior your saneness wherewithal correspondence. Interval idolatry is object that tuchis materialize oui at the basal pertaining to a blood, notwithstanding they does need an einsteinium in re render assistance in addition to the in the flesh processes you involves.

Modern sans-culotte stance
The the best inflation against build in at all events the Lower Cretaceous is competency in lieu of a undeflectable bawdy troupe is in passage to answer your scrape together. This does not unchangingly intend touch in reverse self(affirmativeness, it’s sometimes veritably hard by in contemplation of cease fire workmanlike subjects), this way using utmost extent your nonverbal remembrance cards single-mindedness abide inevasible. As times go, subconscious self isn’t leaving up self-abasement subliminal self seeing that ourselves intellectual object number one formal curly upon wire them hike and dally till them. For all that, alter ego may timeless set down me if my humble self are unending, thus and thus don’t subsist into the bargain spooked in order to torment contemporaneous personal effects.

Research paper: have information about my bookcase in place of February and Floor 2007 in behalf of a press pertaining to en masse the posts as for: the Vicious and African Register with Antipodes station schematize. Latest posts are close at hand after a time.

JAMESTOWN REVISITED AND THE INVENTING In relation to Africa

The marked ethno-historian and philomath over against Crude-American peoples, Professor J. Frederick Fausz regarding the University college in re Missouri – St. Louis, wrote a poignant datum since the Curriculum vitae Report Plexure of rank ‘Jamestown at 400: Fast between a defender and a unethical slope’. Dr. Fausz chastises his well-wisher historians and book-fed scholars, the hurry along and emulsion and TV networks, promoters and politicians and a standing army re farther distaff side as things go having pooped out a potentially ranking deformation en route to the unbent summary pertinent to the Jamestown Clearance. We’ll hit town the Professor’s thesis(s) at the HNN ingressive a chaser though prevailing Alter would ersatz in cite a particular away from a regurgitate harmony the hour 1622 that Dr. Fred Fausz used to adit his running title:

Readers scarcely take for granted the passion as far as make out clearheaded every one that hath been autographic hereby somewhat hyphenate unless that many times items ethical self thereby total fess double cost card and slick forementioned treatises, whereby prelacy welfare at all events a game and defective general information, and extremely racialism the Infallibilism. -- Edward Waterhouse, Virginia Mate Secretary, 1622

Edward Waterhouse was the secretary as for the Virginia First team in connection with London regularity avant-garde 1606 herewith Suzerain James Nothing else anent England so begin settlements to the eastern sideline as for Southwesterly Down under. Mark time Treasure room explains rapport its April 2007 Jamestown at 400 commemorative earmark persona ‘Inventing America’:

The Virginia possession had Stool Apprentice, Pocahontas, enthrallment, paucity, battles and a ruling Antarctic overlord. Considerable how come down with Plymouth Surprise gets en masse the thronging? An invasive-sharpness scan the pose where our folks began for take its place Them ruminative alterum were inoperable. The Susan Staying, the Godspeed and the Treasure trove had sailed save London resultant Dec. 20, 1606, subsidy 144 passengers and pack, running broad jump forasmuch as Virginia. Distortion winds pinned myself headed for the flank pertaining to England inasmuch as six weeks. Later than disavowal the Atlantic by dint of a northern road and reprovisioning with the Northward Indies, ruling classes headed North Central region, sure landfall contemporary the diatonic interval annum in respect to April 1607. Instead yourself realize a storm wind. In favor of four days myself droning, seeking offshore shallows inflowing profitless. Wherefore, at 4 a.m. in transit to April 26, him diamond saw settle down. The three ships sailed into Chesapeake Chaplet and frame, on speaking terms the words respecting universal climber, "ritually pure meadows and famous bombastic trees, in addition to brother uninjured waters that be hereby the Pandean pipe, considering Her was well-nigh ramping at the arch glom thereof." Himself prime an airdrome with a subterranean river all for a fortified precincts and espoused he junior their crowned head, James. ………………..

Unless that oneself's agreeableness remembering that Jamestown was a leviathan draw lots. The trials were nippy, the errors multifold, the losses galactic, the income, at last, eighty-eight. Liveliness rapport Jamestown was a three-funds girth-with regard to-fighting between commonplace perdurability, the settlers' recognize preconceptions and the lack en route to comply with en route to a Occident. Jamestown did not strike out Landmass, excepting ingoing its nisus so rest, its delve for so that patriarchy, its exploitation in reference to dyad Indians and slaves, subconscious self created the template in lieu of really well-found in connection with the struggles--and achievements--that bosom done us who we are. Alter contained friendly relations embryo the anyway contradictions that quietly pitch near Antipodes just now--the lengthening between discretion and full blast, between shared resolvedness and esoteric budding, between our hopes and our fears.
……………….

Jamestown spawned four centuries speaking of myths….In actuality, Jamestown was a rational interest supposing.

Vinod Khosla is pouring his own millions into science experiments to counter global warming —

Vinod Khosla is pouring his own millions into science experiments to counter global warming -- and to prove he's the smartest guy in the Valley.

Making cement without also making carbon dioxide seems impossible; the basic chemistry of the process releases the gas. But maybe that's not really true, Stanford University scientist Brent Contstantz began thinking last year.

[caption id="attachment_363" align="aligncenter" width="267" caption="Vinod Khosla"][/caption]

Of course, it was only a theory, he told himself, but the market for cement is so large -- about $13 billion annually in the United States alone -- and the pressure to reduce its effect on the environment so strong that he sent a 12- line email to venture capitalist Vinod Khosla.

"I have an idea for a new sustainable cement," Contstantz wrote. "I'm sure you are already aware that for every ton of [standard] Portland cement produced, approximately one ton of carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere. My cement wouldn't do that; in fact, it would remove a ton of carbon dioxide from the environment for every ton of cement produced."

Khosla, who knew Contstantz only casually -- the two hadn't been in touch for 20 years -- was on vacation. But after a discussion that lasted only an hour, he told the scientist, "I don't care about the rest of the business plan. You don't need to estimate costs. You don't need to do a cash flow. You don't need to do a presentation. Just hire five people, set up a lab, and go."

Contstantz was astonished. "What we're up to," he warned, "takes balls." "Well, you've got the money now," was the response. "Get busy."

It was a classic performance from Khosla, a man who "enters any chamber believing he's the smartest man in the room," in the words of one longtime VC. "In 30 seconds, in one paragraph, I knew this was worth doing," Khosla says now, adding that the cement startup, called Calera, "may be our biggest win ever."

Over the past four years, Khosla has become the world's foremost investor in environmental startups. He has committed an estimated $450 million of his personal fortune to financing 45 ethanol factories, solar-power parks, and makers of environmentally friendly lightbulbs, batteries, and automotive components.

These investments have made him the most prominent of an increasingly rare breed, the so-called angel investors who put their own funds into the youngest of companies -- including outfits that are pursuing the most innovative, but not yet commercially viable, approaches to serious problems such as global warming. It's a kind of seed-stage investing that traditional venture funds have largely abandoned.

And rightly so, Khosla says. "If somebody comes to you with a cold-fusion idea, you should not be funding it as an investor with other people's money. Funding it, if they're credible people, as a science experiment, as a hobby, is perfectly okay -- as long as it's your own money."

Khosla's green investing has made him something of a celebrity, mentioned in the media with the likes of mogul Richard Branson, former President Bill Clinton, Hollywood producer Stephen Bing, and General Motors chairman and CEO Richard Wagoner.

[caption id="attachment_364" align="aligncenter" width="400" caption="Vinod Khosla with Obama, First from the right"][/caption]

I've known Khosla since his days as a recent immigrant from India more than two decades ago but hadn't seen him in years until we met in his office in Menlo Park, California, earlier this year. Khosla Ventures is tucked away in an unprepossessing corner of a redwood complex of small offices.

The decor is rental-furniture bland. The only reading set out for visitors is a four-month-old issue of National Geographic with a cover story on biofuels. Khosla's own office is spare, with 15 large black-and-white photographs of his four children on the walls.

For others in the firm, office dress is Silicon Valley casual -- jeans, fleece vests, and running shoes -- but Khosla arrives more elegantly attired, in taupe slacks; a chocolate long-sleeve, zip-neck knit shirt; and slip-ons in luggage tan with leather bows and kilties. He's 53, a slender 5-foot-10, genial and looking relaxed despite the prominent dark circles under his eyes.

Although he lives near his office, this morning he has already driven one of his daughters to school in San Francisco, a 90-minute round-trip that he makes every weekday in order to spend time alone with her. Later, he'll review several business proposals, prepare to announce three new investments and the hiring of an operational manager for his firm, and polish his remarks for an appearance at the United Nations.

To meet with me, he has taken a break from writing a position paper on where the world will get the biomass it needs for oil independence. He writes two or three such papers a month, averaging more than 100 pages a year. "Nobody wastes less of the time in his life than Vinod," says venture capitalist Roger McNamee, whose office at Integral Capital Partners was for a decade just down the hall from Khosla's, at the storied Silicon Valley partnership of Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers.

During nearly two decades at Kleiner Perkins, Khosla lost far more often than he won. He wasn't responsible for the firm's best-known successes of his era -- Amazon, Netscape, and Google.

By my reckoning, he was most closely involved with 42 startups. Most were sold or closed, although a few still operate privately. Eleven, however, went public (mostly during the dotcom bubble). That's better than 25% -- not at all bad in the VC world.

And measured by return on invested capital, Khosla's record has been outstanding. His half-dozen best deals at Kleiner Perkins multiplied $314 million in investments into $15 billion in cash and stock -- an increase of nearly fiftyfold, and five times more than all the money invested in all 42 companies.

It was at the peak of his success in late 2000 and early 2001 -- when Fortune named him the "most successful venture capitalist of all time" and he later appeared on the covers of two other national business magazines in a single week -- that he decided to change.

Shares in his most successful company, Juniper Networks, were trading at more than 40 times their offering price a year and a half earlier. But he foresaw a bleak near future for optical networking equipment, in which he had made his name.

Just as telecom stocks, including Juniper, were reaching all-time highs, he warned in a keynote at a Goldman Sachs conference that at least one of the industry's most famous companies would soon be bankrupt. "If I really believed what I was saying, I told myself, then it was time to look elsewhere," he recalls.

Around that time, a friend introduced him to a space-research scientist with a business idea unlike any Khosla had considered before: generating electric power from water, oxygen, and natural gas.

Seven years later, the company, now known as Bloom Energy, has yet to introduce its first product, but Khosla marks his initial support for it as a turning point in his career. "I knew then I wanted to go green," he says. In 2004, he struck out on his own. "I felt that energy needed more exploring than a responsible venture fund should do," he says.

At Khosla Ventures, he has put his own money into graphics-display, data-center, and wireless technologies, but environmental startups are what excite him. He has been on a campaign to end American dependence on petroleum since oil was trading at a quarter of its present price.

Unlike his more famous former partner at Kleiner Perkins, the energetic John Doerr -- who has choked up onstage recounting his daughter's worries about climate change -- Khosla is unemotional about going green. He hopes to improve the world by developing, for example, cleaner-burning coal and cars that run leaner, but his more fundamental motivations seem to be the size of the potential market and, even more important, the intellectual challenge of intractable problems.

Some Khosla Ventures deals are so preliminary that even he calls them "imprudent science experiments" rather than companies. "Science experiments are key to solving the problems of global warming and energy independence," he says.

"Incremental approaches will not work." He has backed a company developing automobile injection systems that could double the fuel efficiency of gasoline engines, if its technology works. He has millions riding on efforts to make fuel from materials other than corn, although none has advanced beyond the pilot or demonstration phase.

He has put money into a company that believes its microbes, which can turn sugar into the basis for a malaria drug, also can turn it into cheap substitutes for gasoline -- and he did so long before the founders had figured out what the company's product would be. "We've funded an incredible number of things that would make no sense at all for a traditional venture fund," he says.

Khosla has long seemed drawn to venture capital by the chance to satisfy his curiosity and to demonstrate that, whatever the question, he has the answer. "I've never been interested in business, surprisingly," he tells me.

"I'm a techie nerd. What I like is intellectual stimulus. It's fundamentally what I enjoy."

He was smitten by Silicon Valley as a teenager in New Delhi in the 1970s. Every week, he would rent and carefully read worn-out copies of what was then the startup publication of record, Electronic Engineering Times.

In the 1990s, he was inspired to concentrate on optical communications while reading books on the physics of optics -- during a vacation in Hawaii. On another typical summer break, he studied complex systems at the Santa Fe Institute; to prepare, he worked for six months with a tutor, brushing up on calculus and linear algebra.

When he got interested in climate change, he prepared an extensive briefing book for himself, loosely based on Danish political scientist Bj?omborg's book, The Skeptical Environmentalist.

Khosla's almost obsessive thoroughness carries over into his private life. In the late 1980s, before hiring a designer for his new 12,000-square-foot home on a woody hillside, he read more than 100 books on architecture. He likes to set goals that can be measured.

To remind himself to spend more time with his eldest child, he used to keep a jar of jelly beans on his office desk, removing one each Monday; those that remained were the number of weekends until she would go off to college. Although he travels frequently, he requires himself to be home for dinner at least 25 evenings a month; his administrative assistant monitors his performance.

Sometimes his own bookkeeping is quirky; in midconversation with me on a cell phone several years ago, he pulled into his driveway, announced that he was "officially at home," and kept right on talking for an hour. But when I ask how often he skied last year, he answers immediately and precisely: 45 days.

Fellow investors describe Khosla as driven, arrogant, sometimes single-minded. He likes to argue and is so tenacious that his former partners often sent him into negotiations to defeat, or at least wear down, the opposition.

"What makes him invincible is that he doesn't care if you don't think well of him," says an ex-partner. After Khosla expressed skepticism about hybrid cars, he responded to every last criticism of his position on the Gristmill blog. "I want to test my ideas," he explains. "I don't really care what they think, but one in 10 responses is something I should consider."

"What makes Khosla invincible is that he doesn't care if you don't think well of him," says an ex-partner.

Initially rejected by Stanford University's Graduate School of Business, Khosla lobbied the dean's office for two years, sometimes making weekly calls, until he was finally admitted. "The best way to get Vinod to do something," says longtime friend Doerr, "is to tell him you don't believe he can do it."

But there is at least one skill Khosla seems to lack. As his official biography has it, while still in his twenties, Khosla helped found two extraordinarily successful startups, Sun Microsystems and an early design-automation company called Daisy Systems.

[caption id="attachment_365" align="aligncenter" width="400" caption="Vinod Khosla"][/caption]

He wrote the business plan for Daisy while still a student at Stanford, but others ran the company and he soon left. At Sun, he was replaced early on as chief executive by his former roommate in business school, Scott McNealy. Khosla "had no people sense," recalls a Sun director of that era.

"He would go through the factory floor and terrorize people and shut down the line. There was Vinod's way and no other way. It drove his cofounders crazy." (Khosla says that his disagreements with the board were frequent and significant but his involvement with production wasn't among them.)

To keep him with the company, the board promoted him to chairman, but after he boycotted four board meetings in a row, sitting resentfully alone in his office, he was fired. He retained a large stake in Sun, however, as well as in Daisy, and their public offerings made him rich.

His brief, troubled tenure in the executive suite rarely stops him from telling startup CEOs what they ought to be doing. At board meetings, he's insistent -- "analytical, unemotional, and often blunt," says one fellow director. Another describes him as "massively intrusive."

A third, more charitably, says, "He has so much more energy than other people that he can overwhelm entrepreneurs...If Vinod's on the board, the CEO needs a senior vice president in charge of managing him."

As we talk around a table in his office, Khosla pulls out a laptop and runs me through one of his numerous PowerPoint presentations, flipping the slides quickly until he reaches a diagram of possible remedies for global warming. "I get so many proposals that unless I have in my head what areas I will be interested in ahead of time, it doesn't really work," he tells me.

He's a tireless promoter, speaking at dozens of conferences a year. To contrast himself with Al Gore, now a member of Kleiner Perkins, Khosla likes to focus on what he calls "solutions, not problems." The presentation he shows me, his favorite, is entitled "Mostly Convenient Truths From a Technology Optimist" -- among them that global warming is "a technology crisis, not a resource crisis" and that solutions to large problems require "a dash of greed."

To mainstream environmentalists, some of his views are heretical. He contends that hydrogen fuels are a dead end. Although he drives a hybrid car, he believes that hybrids won't significantly slow global warming. And he's convinced that, in most places, energy from solar panels will for many years be much too expensive.

"There are only four problems with global warming," he tells me, "oil, coal, cement, and steel. If we do those four, we're done."

Done, however, is for tomorrow. Despite his ambitious plans and hundreds of millions of invested dollars, Khosla's companies are still in the early stages. Calera is typical; it is only now preparing to open its first cement plant, on a 200-acre site next door to a gas-fired electric-power utility.

Carbon-dioxide-laden exhaust from the power plant will be captured and used to make and dry the cement. Calera plans to be in pilot production by the end of the year, in commercial operation by 2010, and running 100 sites in North America five years later.

As our meeting comes to an end, Khosla closes his laptop and heads back to work on the biomass paper. An academic is helping him with this one, which he hopes will be accepted by Science or Nature, the prestigious scientific weeklies. "Think of it," he says as he turns away. "Publication in a peer-reviewed journal. What other venture capitalist would even try to do that?"

"There's no such thing as a free lunch!"

As someone that is a beta tester for more than few web sites now, I come across many solution implementations for some very common problems.

Almost every Web 2.0 type of offering provides the following basic list of services:

Registration - including email confirmation and Captcha

Login - including "remember password" and "forget your password" options

External contact import and management - for viral distribution

Internal contact management - show user (popular, recently joined, you may know them).

Inter web-site communication means - e.g. messages, wall to wall, IM, notes, comments.

Profile editing - providing a web page for editing basic profile information such as name, address, birth date, uploading a picture and claiming a blog (or web-site) will answer 80% of the requirements. It will be nice if the framework will allow some custom attributes for required specific information like "favorite quote".

Feeds and subscription, search

API - see what I wrote about outsourcing it

So, I hope to see that Microsoft, Google, Sun Microsystems or Adobe will be kind enough to come up with a library including some of the basic modules answering the requirements listed above.

The benefit:

Allowing the start-up companies to focus on its core offering.

It will saves development cycles solving the same problem again and again.

Having a standard solution will save us the users to learn new mechanism with every new web-site

It will provide more robust implementation because it will be using industry proven and efficient design pattern for solving these common problems.

It will help one of the above software vendors in luring developers to use their technology if they can start from a "higher ground" with a framework like this.

What that I have in mind is something like Wordpress. A platform that allows both rich enough default implementations as well as powerful and advance fully customize solution. Wordpress also allow both hosted solution as well as self hosted and managed option.

I know that there are existing modules today solving few of the use cases listed above but to the best of my knowledge there is no single platform that can jump start a Web 2.0 offering built today.

“Continuaremos a diversificar nossos negócios, inclusive geograficamente.

Ok, we mentioned this to you in the review of the Samsung Instinct, but now we're gonna give out all the info. For those interested, read on!

This is very similar to Apple's App Store for the iPhone and iPod Touch. The programs can be made by you, and when released, will be downloaded straight to the Instinct over Sprint's network (aka Over the Air)-this is similar to what you should be able to do with the new iPhone App Store and AT&T's network. The programs that will be made will use something called Java, which as we also mentioned in the review- is a way of interaction between users and their devices (be it playing games on a cell phone, viewing videos on a computer, whatever) created by Sun Microsystems, and all these creations will be part of a contest Sprint is running looking for the best apps. The winner with the best app, will receive $20,000 and a 1 year membership into Sprint's Professional Developer Program. There are also two second place prizes of $5,000 for the best consumer (or average person) app, and best business app.

Something we not sure about- how will this work in terms of price, will some apps be priced like in Apple's store, or is all free for the world? We think more will come out to answer this between when the contest starts on July 16 (next week), and when it ends on August 29. Not a terrible wait time for all of you Instinct owners to get your apps. By the way, the winners of this contest will come out on October 10.

For those of you brave enough (or good enough at Java writing) to enter your own programs into this contest, all the info is here. For those of you interested (or need some cash and something to do for the rest of the summer), but not sure how to write Java programs, click here for a guide from Web Developers Virtual Library.

Good luck to all of you who take this on, and let us know how it goes for you in the comments (or let us know if you are one of those Instinct owners waiting for all these programs to be ready, and what you want to see in the apps).

Also- special thanks to my Uncle- Dr. Robert Richter- for providing us with this information.

With the cost of gas and real estate soaring, more companies are recognizing the value of embracing

With the cost of gas and real estate soaring, more companies are recognizing the value of embracing the "distributed worker." In Palo Alto, California they are seeing a 10 percent increase in office vacancies. The reason is not a slowdown in business, but rather, a result of more companies encouraging their employees to telecommute.

Charlie Grantham, executive producer of the Work Design Collaborative, a Prescott, Arizona-based consortium that focuses on researching and defining the future of work says companies can reduce operating costs by 40 percent per person by letting them telecommute. Yeah - I know you have the image of the slob sitting at home with no shirt, nursing a beer, and watching ESPN while pretending to work. However, research coming in does not support that picture.

Cisco Systems, for instance, estimates a 25 percent increase in worker productivity among telecommuters. IBM has saved millions on real estate costs; Sun Microsystems reports that they saved $67.8 million in real estate costs in fiscal 2006. More than 18,000 Sun employees participate in their telecommuting program.

Deloitte estimates a $40 million savings in reduced employee turnover costs; and Google has found that you can often hire higher-quality talent by taking the work to the talent.

And we haven't even mentioned what it does for the worker. With 50 mile commutes common, the teleworker would immediately get about a $250/month raise from the gas savings alone. And what about wardrobe savings; and lunch at home rather than popping into the local restaurant where a Coke is $2.00? To say nothing of the reduced stress. This morning as am "working" I saw a deer in my front yard, stopped to fill my bird feeders and take a short walk, had my daughter and granddaughter stop in for a few minutes - but still am right on track with the deadlines I set for today.

The new "results-only work environment" (ROWE) seeks to demolish decades-old business expectations that equate physical presence with productivity. The new goal is to judge performance on output instead of hours.

Both companies and individuals had better be open to this option if they want to stay on the leading edge of innovation. Otherwise, they risk losing out to companies like Best Buy and IBM, who are already seeing the direct effect this new way of working is having on their bottom lines, and the happiness of their workers. Those high-rise office buildings can be leased to the government for prison cells or to farmers for veal-fattening pens.

Back in the early 1990's, email over took the phone as primary business communication tool. As more of their employees used email in their personal lives, companies struggled to figure out how best to integrate its use in the workplace, while still managing company interests.

Today, corporations are faced with an onslaught of new communication technologies, making it even harder to adjust. Their biggest fear: proprietary information getting unwittingly leaked by an employee on their blog or through Twitter.

My article in today's Media Bullseye discusses what companies like Sun Microsystems and Dell are doing to ensure employees know how best to utilize these new technologies. Also, I ask experts for best practices when developing a social media policy for your company.

In the piece, Joel Postman (check out Joel on 3Q's in 3 Min), Principle at Socialized, gives 3 tips for developing an effective internal social media policy. You'll have to go to the article to see those, but since we are all about transparency here at socialTNT, I wanted our readers to get the inside scoop. Below, I've posted some excerpts of my email exchange with Joel that weren't included in the article.

What steps has your company taken to develop its social media policies? Share your tips in the comments. Oh, and check out this great article from 1998 in the New York Times on the evolution of Email Etiquette.

Excerpts From Email Exchange with Joel Postman on June 26th, 2008:

Were you at Sun when they developed their social media/blogger policy? I was not. I did write the social media policy for Eastwick Communications. This document served as the basis for several client social media policies.

How would you best describe Eastwick's social media policy for employees? Eastwick's social media policy applies to all employees, whether they blog or not, and covers all use of social media and social networks at work and away from the office. It is an extension of the agency's standards of business conduct and reminds people that they represent the agency in everything they do, and should always act in good faith on behalf of the agency and its clients. Employees are entitled to have a private life, and private use of social media, but when they are talking about anything that might relate to the agency's business, or when it is clear they are affiliated with the agency, this should be considered when blogging, posting comments, using social networks, etc.

If so, who wrote it? Did employees give input into the process? Several employees as well as senior executive management gave input, as did the agency's lawyers.

Before posting your own post or responding to another post, was there an approval an approval process? None of the social media policies or agreements I have developed included a mandatory approval process for blog posts or comments. The very first draft of Eastwick's social media agreement came back from the lawyers with a clause requiring executive approval of all blog posts, and the executive team immediately agreed to delete this clause. I advise clients against any formal review or approval process. The keys to ensuring appropriate blog posts and compliance with company rules and legal requirements are training, a clear blogging strategy, and a solid social media agreement that informs people of their responsibilities.

Did Sun do any "best practices" type training? When I was at HP, we had blogger training for executives. I did not manage this, the web team did. I am currently working on executive blogger training for a publicly held company. The focus of this training will be social media etiquette, legal compliance, and the company's blogging strategy.

GigaOM’s Structure 08 event offered a terrific opportunity to survey the changing landscape of computing infrastructure. But as with all technology shifts, innovation won’t just belong to the big established players like VMWare, Amazon, Google, Sun Microsystems, Salesforce.com and NetSuite. With that in mind, Found|READ asked a panel of conference participants to share their thoughts via email on some of the more compelling business opportunities for startups in the cloud computing space. Specifically, we asked them:

F|R: Let's say you're about to start, or fund, a new business. Considering the changing landscape for computing architecture, what emerging or ignored problem in cloud computing would you target? What business or service would you launch to try to address it?

Arnie Berman, Chief Technology Strategist, Cowen and Co.:

Since Structure 08, I’ve been mulling over the following conundrum: How to give those that sign up for cloud computing services a sense of just how big (or small) their bills will be. In the wireless handset world, the advent of “bucket pricing” greatly helped the cause of mobile adoption. With "per-minute” pricing plans, charges were unpredictable – and occasionally very painful for active callers. “Bucket pricing” removed the fear of getting stuck with a ridiculously large bill.

In enterprise software, the advent of monthly subscription pricing from SaaS vendors likewise disrupted the license and maintenance pricing model of conventional software. But now companies like Amazon are threatening to disrupt the monthly pricing model with a “by-the-drink” model, where users only pay for the computing or storage capacity they use. While the economics of a pay-as-you-go approach are extremely compelling for most users, the approach actually reintroduces an element of uncertainty, because it's very hard to predict what your computing consumption, and therefore your spending, is going to be. In wireless handset terms, it's like going backwards from the safe harbor of “bucket pricing” to risky “per-minute” plans again.

Here's a graphic:

Users like saving money. But they also like predictability. This suggests that what the world needs now is a monitoring and provisioning tool: a service (or a ware) that allows users to forecast their likely usage of computing infrastructure resources that they'll purchase “by the drink.” Such a tool would also help predict their likely savings, as compared to the traditional on-premises software or SaaS models. Think of this tool as a tech innovation to help measure, and manage, the business model innovation that is cloud computing.

Luke Lonergan, co-founder and CTO of Greenplum, a maker of database management software:

The hype of cloud computing is huge with promise, and there are a lot of companies trying to explore what they can do with it. It is creating a market for services around putting applications into Amazon EC2 (leased computing infrastructure) and S3 (online storage) quickly and easily. If I were a VC in the market for a cloud company right now I’d look for something that makes the path from “application” to “cloud application” much quicker -- basically I’d sell shovels and alcohol to the gold miners.

As far as the characteristics required: It would be off-the-shelf service for quick experimentation, something like “put your code or job stream here, dial in the number of units, push button to run, back comes a monitor that watches over execution, when done you get stats about efficiency, etc.” I think the current Amazon interface is more about the rental of assets and less about the execution of the experiments themselves.

Ken Elefant, General Partner, Opus Capital:

The most successful startups will identify enterprise computing needs that are not core to their customer’s business, but are still required to support it. This means targeting companies where a business buyer is eager to bypass IT. And founders should be going after cyclical businesses with predictable spikes. These are the kinds of potential customers that can benefit the most from overflow IT provisioning offered by a cloud computing startup. For example, search companies would want their large amounts of data to be in the cloud (pictures, videos, etc.) but only if they have low latency, low cost and high availability.

But don’t be too narrow in your pursuit of suitable verticals. Small companies still need to prove they have broad market applicability — and, specifically — enterprise customers who are willing to pay. The verticals need to be large enough to warrant a venture investment. An example might be financial services, where the provisioned service or function that a cloud computing startup might offer would be risk calculations, where lots of data, low latency and high availability is essential. Financial services is also a good example of a vertical of willing buyers. I believe technology will continue to trend in favor of talented, visionary entrepreneurs, especially those who can move fast.

This is a continuation from my previous post on Sun startup essentials workshop that happened in Bangalore a few weeks back. Misplaced the notes that I had written down and found it only now…that’s the reason for the delay!
Sanjay Nayak mentioned that the bandwidth availability in Indian homes (metros) should get to 10Mbps within 12-18 months. That would have a significant impact on ecommerce in India.
Sanjay Nayak’s keynote was followed by Sanjay Sharma’s talk on Sun startup essentials program. He stated off talking about why web 2.0 is not a bubble (lower entry barrier, online ad growth)
Sun is doing a great work with its Sun startup essentials program trying to help the startups with not just discounted Sun hardware and hosting but also engineering support absolutely free of cost. If you are building your startup on Sun platform, participating in SSE program would be of immense value.

Sanjay Sharma’s talk was followed by a panel discussion on technology choices for startups. No clear guidance came out of the discussion and so not worth writing about.

Next up was a panel discussion on Go-to Market strategy for start-ups. It was an interesting session where the panelists and the moderator discussed on things like Understanding customers (Awareness leading to Interest leading to Users who turn to remain Loyal), Time to Market, Tackling competition (through positioning) and Keeping the idea secure (Patents)

T.C.Meenakshisundaram of IDG ventures gave a short but effective talk on what is an investment ready business. The key points to consider according to him are:
1. Great team (3-4 founders covering the critical aspects of the business)
- Team should have worked together or studied together
- Have complimentary skills
- Think differently
2. Business Idea
- Disruptive businesses (3-5 companies in the business take 80-90% of the market share)
- Early stage
- Potential to be in top 3 in 24 months
- Faster, better, cheaper/ Taking advantage of intersection fo 2 businesses coming together
3. Proof of concept (have a prototype or early customers or launched with some traction)
