• But the bike is made (mostly) of an easily renewable resource, and supposedly cost only $30. The tires, wheels, chain and gears are made from standard metal parts. Oh, and the seat, too. I’m hoping there wasn’t even a test-prototype with a cardboard seat. Ouch.
• Regular box cardboard isn’t strong enough, so Bridge used something called hexacomb cardboard, which has the additional utility of being waterproof. I’m not sure I’d want to be the one to test this claim by taking this thing for a ride in the rain.
• The bike will hold anyone who weighs less than 168 lbs, and Bridge, who made the bike as part of his degree program in Product Design, is looking for investors to try and sell the bike commercially. I can see and hear the ads now, to the tune of the Beatles “Paper Back Writer” — “Paper Bike Rider.”

   What does it mean to enjoy God?  The writer of this Psalm is enjoying God as his protector, sustainer, and savior.  Knowing that God responds to his cries for help brings peace and joy in the midst of chaos.

   As God’s child you can live in Heaven on earth.  This understanding gives a joy filled approach to the circumstances you face each day.

Steg 1:Var?

Just nu bor jag i Stockholm, en alldeles omöjlig stad. Bostadspriserna är grooovt höga och mycket svårt att få tag på ett första jobb. Så vad gör man? Flyttar till Uppsala, som bara är Sveriges fjärde största stad. Statistiken roar mig. Bostadspriserna där är betydligt lägre, och det jag har sett av Uppsala (uppcon) har bara varit trevligt. Det är som en liten stad, men fortfarande inom rimliga avstånd från Stockholm.

Steg 2: Bostad?

Min kännedom om den svenska bostadsmarknaden är bristande. Men det finns vänliga hemsidor som säger att om man vill bo i Uppsala så bör man ställa sig i kö till exempel här och här, vilket jag nu har gjort. Dessutom är jag medlem i någon annan bostadskö, men den kommer inte kunna hjälpa mig ännu, eftersom jag endast har varit medlem i ett par år. De här kan hjälpa mig inom en ganska snar framtid.

Steg 3: Plugga?

Under lång tid har jag varit mycket fundersam över vad jag ska bli när jag blir stor. Nu är jag stor, juridiskt sett. Nu börjar jag i och för sig få en aning om vad jag vill hålla på med. Datorer. Datasystem och liknande. Jag har hört att det betalar bra. Jag vill ha pengar. Saker o ting blir så mycket lättare om man har ett välbetalande jobb. Känner en människa som är systemarkitekt, vilket låter jättenice. Kommer antagligen att plugga på Uppsala Universitet, om jag får plats. Tvivlar på att man får söka in om man inte har gått ut gymnasiet ännu. Hela universitetmaskineriet är mycket främmande för mig (allt annat är bara ganska främmande).

Turligt nog så har jag ordnat med det som jag kan ordna med nu. Än så länge kan jag inte söka utbildning, men jag har i alla fall ställt mig i bostadskö, som är lagom krävande från min sida. Dessutom så gäller inte det här förrän om minst ett år, kanske ytterligare ett år om jag bestämmer mig för att stanna kvar i Stockholm och jobba för att samla på mig lite mer marginaler i form av cash. Nu ska jag lugna ner mig några halvmetrar och se till att slänga ihop lite lunch.

Last week, I saw the beating heart of my 6-week old child. At that age, he/she is still an embryo living in his/her own little wold in the gestational sac inside me. At the left is the actual ultrasound photo  ;)

The tiny embryo appears translucent in the dark background of the ultrasound monitor with its tiny heart thumping quickly.  No words could ever describe the sight. I looked at the monitor for several seconds trying to embed the image in my memory- the image of my child's first signs of life. An image I would want to hold dear for my husband who missed seeing this because he is working abroad. An image that glorifies God who is the Creator of all Life.

Last week also, news broke out in school that a student of mine committed suicide. My student was 18 years old, good-looking actually, and quite timid in class. I often spot him sleeping during our 7-8am class. But I never called his name for I never embarrass students.  I remember one time after an early morning lecture, I approached him and asked him why he often dozes off.  He simply smiled, I guess embarrassed now, and apologized because he slept late.

Perhaps that was the only interaction I had with him that semester.  Two semesters later, he decided to take a gun and shoot it at his head.  His classmates relayed to me a sad story of family pressure and quarrels with his girlfriend. Perhaps, he got tired of it all, they said.  The day I learned the news, my chest felt heavy the entire day thinking why? Why? Why?!  Would it have changed anything if I were able to interact with him more? Talked to him more?  Have I and the other professors failed to be as second parents?

Now a realization about life and death hit me...

Do we have a right to kill ourselves?  Do we own our lives that we can take it?

My answer is NO.

We absolutely have no right to kill ourselves because our first heartbeat is not even from our own will. Our life came from the Creator and He has the sole authority to take it.

Being a primigravida, I now have a deeper understanding and appreciation of life.  Life is such a gift. A miracle indeed.  Why waste it away?  Life is not our choice, but living it to the fullest is.

My prayers and condolences to the bereaved family.

May eternal light and peace be with you, David.

Tala in Indian Carnatic Music is a time measure or rhythm cycle. As heart beat is to life for a man, Tala lends life for whole of a concert. It is said "Sruthi Mata Laya Pitha" which means, the drone emanated from the Tambura is Mother to the music and the Tala is like father. The tala or time in Carnatic Music is a series of counts made by wave of hand or tap of the hand on the lap or by using both the hands in a manner of clap.

There are seven basic talas in Carnatic Music: Suladi Sapta Talas. The Seven Talas form the major oft used rhythms in Carnatic Music. Though there are many tala systems in Carnatic Music, the Suladi Sapta Talas are the most famous since the time of Purandaradasa (1484-1564) and most of the Compositions currently sung are part of the Suladi Sapta Talas

Each and every talam has a structure, that is governed by the rules pertaining to it. For example, if we take the most common tala - Chatusra Jaathi Triputa Talam (Adi Talam), we can describe the process of the tala thus :  
1 beat of the palm of the hand on the thigh,  
followed by counting three fingers, then beating the palm and turning it over, then beating the palm and turning it over  
If we count a number each for every beat, fingercount or turn of the palm - the number comes to eight. So the tala has eight units. The units are called Aksharams and the Adi talam has 8 aksharams.  

The first part of the tala which consists of the beating of the palm & counting is called Laghu. Here the number of units is 4 (Chatusram) and the laghu is Chatusra laghu. The Jaathi of the laghu determines the jaathi of the tala so the tala is Chatusrajaathi Adi Tala.  

The next process of beat and turning the palm is called Drtham. It is done twice, so the tala has 2 drthams. Thus Chatusra Jaathi Triputa Talam(Adi) has one Chatusra Laghu and two drthams. The symbol for laghu is 1 and the number written beneath it represents the jaathi and the symbol for drtham is 0 and hence, this thalam will be represented thus

Thus, from the above, we understand that a tala has laghu, drtham and these are called Angams (parts) of the tala. In some cases, there may be half of drtham, i.e., just the beat of the palm without turning it and is called Anudrtham.

In a tala, the drtham has two units and anudrtham (if it is part of a talam) has 1 unit and this is a constant. But the units of the laghu vary according to the jaathi.

Aksharams   3   4   5   7   9

So, depending upon the jaathi, the units of the laghu varies. And the jaathi of the talam is determined by the jaathi of the laghu. Also, depending upon the jaathi of the laghu, the aksharams of the tala vary. For instance, the Triputa talam has the following angams - one laghu and two drthams and symbolically 1 0 0. Now, if the Triputa is Thisra Triputa, the laghu will have three aksharams

All day long we achieve minor achievements that we take for granted simply because they are a matter of course.  ie. we just rising and shining each morning, wake up get out of bed, go to the bathroom, wash our face, brush our teeth, grab some breakfast ect.  Not once do we think about the paraplegics in the world that have to get lifted out of the beds, placed in a wheelchair, and have to have someone help them with those little things that we do everyday.  We carried out all those tasks successfully (achieved) them and thought nothing of it.  Then there are those achievements that take time, that you have to work hard for, and when you get to where you wanted to be you feel this sense of pride and accomplishment.  You pop ya colla and say "yeah, I did that!" 

When you turn your dial to the Achievement station you will find that your life will unfold right before your very eyes.  You may work towards achieveing your goals for weeks, even months on end with out little or no sleep at all, but you don't feel tired or you don't feel fatigued.  You feel constantly renewed and revitalized because you are working towards something that you are passionate about.  It the difference between byching about $5 a gallon gas and being excited about spending $5,000 on a gift for that special someone.  The latter doesn't bother you because it is something that you 'want' to do.  You get that same passion and excitement when you are working towards achieve something.  Ask yourself, are you hard a worker or are you working hard towards your goal?  One makes you feel fulfilled and happy, while the other makes you feel used and unappreciated. 

The philosophy surrounding Achieveology is fundamental to tapping into and nurturing that part of our being that wants more out of life and to help you find out not only who you are, but who you are meant to be.

I've just finished my second year at UCCA Epsom doing Graphics and Benn had done a presentation there about work experience and neoco. The agency looked really impressive, and seeing as it was a digital agency I didn’t think I had a chance to do an internship there, as I have no experience in new media. Nevertheless, I enthusiastically pursued an internship and was fortunate enough to win him over, and here I am, 4 weeks later and writing this blog. All I can say is I’m happy I got to do an internship here and not anywhere else…

Not only are they a nice, funny bunch of people, but they are really good at what they do too. They have taught me a lot during the time I have been here and made it a thoroughly enjoyable experience too. I’ve been active within the design process of real projects and included in brainstorms and client meetings. Not only that, but I haven’t made a cup of tea the whole time I’ve been here. (I bet I will once Benn reads this though!) Do you know how lucky that is? My friend, who is also doing a work placement at another agency, has been shoved in a corner on a Mac and left to her own devices all day. Whether or not I have been of any actual use to them during my time here, I don’t know. But I’m grateful that they recognized my eagerness to learn and that they gave me these chances.

Why don’t all students do work experience in their 2nd year? I suppose that the stereotypical answer is that they are too lazy and lack the initiative to try to find a place. But from my experience, I think that most students find the prospect of an internship quite daunting. It’s a brush with reality and a taste of life after uni which most of them try to avoid for as long as possible. The fact is, I feel that if I had left this opportunity any longer, I would have received a horrible shock and those who put off work experience are fooling themselves.

In my first week, I literally thought I was going to die. It was such a massive shock to the system. Having to get up early everyday, travel into central, work 8 hours and get home around 7.30pm couldn’t be further from the student way of life. I was exhausted. (No wonder so many people go on to do Masters.) If you think that sounds like hard work, the team here work even harder and still have the energy to go out and have fun on a Friday night. I found it got easier as time went by, but I really hate to think how my friends are going to cope when they do work experience. The longer they leave it the harder it is going to be for them, especially as employers are looking out for those who have taken the initiative to do work placements already and are constantly on the lookout for the most talented graduates.

Also, what is the point in doing a degree when so many students come out of university without the necessary skills to be employed into an agency in the first place? Tutors always say that it’s important not to be a ‘Mac monkey’ and it’s all about being creative. But I’ve learnt that, yes creativity is important, but it doesn’t matter how creative you are if you don’t have the skills to be able to implement your ideas then you are going to struggle. I thought that I was quite good on adobe programs before I came here, but I soon realised that I have a lot more to learn before I become anywhere near as good as Mark and LB. We haven’t been equipped with the knowledge to make the transition from education to work and you need to be motivated enough to teach yourself more than the basics.

That’s why it is so important for students to do work experience as soon as possible. University now seems like a cushioned bubble in comparison, and I’m just glad I got this insight now, before I have graduated. Leaving university completely naïve to what it’s really like in the working world, in the design industry, will leave you unaware about your real weaknesses. Students, including me, need to work harder if they realistically want to be of any use to an agency once they finish their degree. I’m just happy that I’ve been fortunate enough to discover this with another year of uni to go, to rectify my mistakes and to improve upon my weaknesses.

All I can hope is that my friends are lucky enough to work in a place like Neoco. It’s great to work somewhere where hard work is rewarded with cinnamon buns, you get to listen to music all day and play rock band at the end of a long week (and they don’t judge you even though you are rubbish at it.) It’s been fun and inspiring, but a real eye-opener too!

This is a story about a girl called Sophie, and her ambition to study at place called the University of East Anglia, in Norwich, England.

Sophie has always had a fascination with film and creative arts. Arriving at high school, she fell behind in maths, science and French. She figured she just worked off the right side of the brain. So when she failed to understand graphs and periodic tables like everyone else, her teachers set her a challenge, to learn it creatively. As long as she achieved the same outcome as every other student, she was left to her own device as to how to learn it.

Around this time she discovered the movie camera. Her school had several bulky, ancient things that fascinated her no end. Borrowing a camera, she made a documentary on her course work, in the process earning herself an “A”.  She then made a film about her French studies, and a music track for science in which she rapped the periodic table. Sophie was addicted. With the encouragement of her teachers, she had found a way to learn and be creative at the same time.  She wrote stories in place of research assignments, taking photographs and binding it into a book. She made films, wrote scripts and directed plays- anything to avoid ‘real’ work.  

When Sophie was in VCE, and thinking about university and a career, she looked at her peers, sweating over big heavy books and cramming for exams, and thought, ‘do I want this to be me?’ Then she thought about everything she had achieved with success in the past few years and decided her choice was an easy one. Sophie would become a filmmaker. She loved writing and making her own pieces of visual delight.

The next few years, Sophie followed out her goals, attending The Victorian College of the Arts, and entering the Bachelor of Creative Arts at La Trobe University in 2008.

Now with much delight Sophie studies film and screenwriting. Her ambition is strong- to gain as much experience as she can in film, and thus, La Trobe can offer her more! An exchange with the University of East Anglia, where it’s reputation lies in creative writing and film studies. If Sophie could go there for one semester, she would be one step closer to her ambition of becoming a professional writer and filmmaker! The exchange would be invaluable, giving her practical filmmaking experience and a new perspective on the teaching and knowledge to be devoured in the study of film!

Sophie finds inspiration in almost everything. If paid enough, she would write about grass growing. So imagine, just for a second, the amount of motivation she could gain from 6 months in a foreign country, experiencing a new culture, breathing in a different type of life. She would grow as a person; her work would change and develop. Her knowledge would expand like helium balloons, her skills be sharpened like fresh pencils, her mind like a garden in spring, growing rapidly, blooming and sprouting new ideas!

Representing La Trobe University, and Australia, to the world, but mainly to the University of East Anglia, Sophie believes she could do well. She has represented her high school at inter-school debating tournaments, and has no criminal record to surface as an embarrassment in Who Weekly, page 6. 

As she discovered the last time she left Australia, becoming fiercely patriotic is some sort of reaction the strip search and x-ray upon arrival in the UK. Suddenly Sophie felt the need to defend the ‘Walkabout’ pub in all its Australian glory. When pointed out politely that Sophie was actually British as well as Australian, she suddenly found she knew more verses of the Australian anthem than your average Australian cricketer, as she dropped ‘Australia’ into every possible sentence.

Being a part of La Trobe’s exchange program, having the chance to learn and discover at the University of East Anglia, is fulfilling her ambition of international education- a bit like being a spy. This whole adventure is something Sophie is buckled in for, her finger hovering, waiting, to press the big green ‘GO’ button.
