I took this straight off of Urban Prankster because well I didn't come by any of this information on my own and I'd have nothing new to add. I think this is just too cool to pass up though as this would have to be the most fun business to run/the most interactive art I could think of. This is the good type of interaction, not like that other thing I wrote about earlier.

anywho, words by Charlie Todd.

"Jake Bronstein recently bought a toy vending machine off the Internet. He filled the toy capsules with ideas of fun things to do and started placing the machine in various spots around New York. For 50 cents you get the original toy, an idea, and a map to guide you to the location for your idea. Each capsule also contains a quarter, refunding half of your purchase price (the machine wouldn’t let him charge less than 50 cents.)"

Yesterday I went for a wander into the city. My first stop was Tate Modern - the modern art gallery.

Yesterday I went for a wander into the city. My first stop was Tate Modern - the modern art gallery.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="240" caption="Tate Modern"][/caption]

This place was very cool. I got to see original Picasso and Litchenstein works which was pretty exciting. There were 4 huge gallery spaces separated into different artistic periods + smaller areas for video and performance art. There was an awesome video piece on psychics and telekinesis which had a soundtrack of an intense drum build up only to end in static in sound and on screen. Errant Uncle Prasnaglava would have been more than amused.

I am also now enthralled by the work of Cy Twombly.

Along side all the permanent works was a short running installment about street art. They had brought over a number of international street artists and had given them space to do work around the burrows behind the Tate building. I only managed to get to two of them yesterday but am going to try and do the whole tour today.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="240" caption="Tate Street Art by 3TTMAN"][/caption]

Not only had they filled the surrounding streets with fantastic art installments, but they had also given 6 artists an area on the front of the Tate Modern building to do work on. These were absolutely amazing and epic in proportion.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="180" caption="Art on the front of Tate Modern"][/caption]

After I had finished at Tate Modern, I headed over the The Globe Theatre, where Shakespeare used to perform his plays, although obviously now more modern. I think that I will go and see Timon of Athens next week perhaps. It is only 5 pounds to stand like a peasant on the ground - I feel that this will be the best way to see it. The guy at the information desk said it was the only way, after he referred to the booklet as "his book".

Next I headed back over the Millennium Bridge towards St Paul's Cathedral. This building is epic, I haven't ever seen anything like it before (I'm sure I will in the near future 'though) and I can't wait to actually go inside it. Here is a shot from the outside, though. 'Tis crazy!

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="240" caption="St Paul's Cathedral"][/caption]

Awesome! I will go back next week some time and try to get a better look around both in and out side. It is hard to get a good photo of it because it is so packed into the city and surrounded by other buildings it never really fits well in the frame.

Time to go now, Soho and Camden Markets today, and a further wander around the Tate street art installment.

I love this guy's attitude and creativity. He is definately keeping it FRESH.

"Cuprocking is the brain child of Sydney based artist Andy Uprock. By mapping out large areas of cyclone fencing and sticking plastic cups into the existing diamond shaped holes, Andy transforms streets and public areas into floating walk-by galleries. Andy typically uses around 2,500 individual cups for each piece and recycles them between each project. "

"Andy also creates braille poetry out of the cups and people are calling it the very first form of graffiti for the blind. Andy describes the process as being like "solving Japanese algebra blindfolded".

He's created a couple of braille pieces on the streets of Melbourne and Sydney already and an exhibition, in conjunction with Vision Australia, is being planned for when the guys return from their international cuprocking jaunt.

IS THERE NOTHING HE CAN'T DO?

Andy is the kind of person who makes you realise that you definitely could have been doing more with your life and of his many surprising talents, dancing is probably the most crucial to his core. Growing up as a b-boy in the 90s, with his mother and elder sisters being key influences, Andy has taught himself over 12 different styles of dance, and is known to have one of the most unique and stylised uprocks in the biz. It's like he's always looking for the next challenge and if it means learning how to walk upstairs on his hands, then so be it.

Andy is also an accomplished painter whose art depicts some of the most beautiful and fascinating elements of this universe. With some of his paintings involving over 300 hours of labour, these complex and cryptic works leave you in a seamless, timeless state of consciousness. It's Andy's incessant questioning of the world and his astute fascination with life, rhythm and movement that makes him such an interesting artist. "

No, cuprockers don’t have big, teased hair… nor do they have reality TV shows on VH1. Cuprocking is a unique form of art invented by Sydney-based artist Any Uprock. You see, he takes thousands of plastic cups, varying in color and artistically places them in the holes of your ordinary wire fence. Uprock has been bombing the streets of Sydney for a while now, but is currently on an 8 city tour to spread the word. Paris, London, Barcelona, L.A. & N.Y. have all been witness, with Tokyo, Hong Kong & Kuala Lumpur next on deck. Go here for more details on this fun concept.

Faile. Currently made up of Patrick McNeil (a dirty Canadian) and Patrick Miller (a brave American citizen), there's hardly a New Yorker below 14th street who hasn't seen one of their works. They've travel to Tokyo, Copenhagen, Berlin, London, Zurich, and Amsterdam with their graphic, pop wheat pastes. You can get your very own piece of Faile in the form of a book, t-shirt, or little trinket, available via theironline store. K$

Blu is from Bologna, Italy. Blu is also just awesome. Give his web site a look next time your boss is in a meeting or whatever because it's well of amazing art. Be warned, however, there is a lot of stuff thematized by violent eye-gouging angst over the state of the modern world (see Haley's post about gladiator sandals). His sketches are narrative and evocative, but his outdoor wall work is simply astonishing. I respect not only his skill as a painter but his logistical prowess--he works on a much grander scale than most street artists at the moment. He is also the most aloof of the 6, so don't expect to find his picture anywhere. K$

So, the 2008 Olympics kick of on 8th August. To celebrate the BBC's coverage of the games in Beijing, Gorillaz masterminds Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett were commisioned by the station to produce a special animation and track as part of its marketing campaign.

The animation is based on a classic Chinese novel called 'Journey To The West' by Wu Cheng'en, as well as the cult 80s TV series 'Monkey' (which was itself based on the novel). I used to watch it AVIDLY as a kid with my dad. That magic golden bo staff was amazing.

Anyway, a lot of people on the BBC site are questioning what the animation has to do with the Olympics. How could you miss it? Let me break it down for you. Monkey and his friends journey to the Beijing Bird's Nest Stadium in order to do battle. On the journey they use their well-honed athletic skills (javelin, hammer, diving, pole vault, hurdling, gymnastics, martial arts) to fend off primal, mythical monsters. It's pretty straighforward. What's more the animation is slick, and the music spot on. It's refreshing to have a station as tired as the BBC take a chance and invest in something new and creative for once.

In fact Albarn and Hewlett have also produced a stage adaptation of the classic Chinese tale called 'Monkey: Journey To The West' which is part opera, part animation and part circus art. Music was composed by Albarn, visuals by Hewlett and the adaptation was written and directed by Chen Shi-Zheng. It's running at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden from 23rd to 26th July, and I was set to buy tickets yesterday but they were all SOLD OUT. Couldn't believe it. Oh, there was a pair of tickets on ebay for over £100 each, but since when have I had that kind of money to burn? Never!

For more info on the production check out the website here.

This sticker was found in the streets of Chinatown in Seattle, near the train station. At first, it just looks like some Guantanamo-esque prisoners, but closer inspection finds that the main jumpsuited man is holding shopping bags. A street art message on the slave cult of consumerism? I'd say so.

Ok everyone, it looks like it's finally safe to stop talking about about how graffiti should be called street art and how there's totally a Banksy in the West Village and no one's should be covering it up. It's officially art, so says the Tate Modern. They've even created a game for kids on their web site, which is nifty and provides a little giggle for those of us who are already familiar with the medium. I won't presume to discuss the political implications of each piece because you people are smart enough to figure it out for yourselves.

The Tate has sacrificed its enormous front walls to six hot names in street art: Blu, Faile, JR, Nunca, Os Gêmeos, and Sixeart. So hot right now. Don't worry kids, artist profiles to come, so stay tuned to Spiral (bitch). K$
