Am fost la un drive-test cu domnul Marian Bobe, un om foarte de treaba, care a infiintat la Brasov Clubul Kite Fever. Intai pe un camp in Triaj, dar  nu aveam vant deloc si am plecat la Aeroclub la Ghimbav. Si dupa o interesanta si scurta lectie teoretica am manuit kiteul. La sfarsitul cursului m-am suit si in buggy :P Poti sa faci un curs complet, cu echipament asigurat, suport teoretic si asistenta profi in circa 12 ore (adica 4 zile de curs). Rally for Peach march set for Saturday

The monthly Rally for Peach march is set for Shreveport’s Ledbetter Heights Neighborhood and will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church, 500 Common Street.

The march, which ends at the lot on the corner of Christian and Travis streets, is a nondenominational event and is open to everyone, including ministers, city leaders and law enforcement officials.

I wonder how long until they change it, and if that made it to the print edition. Or maybe this has something to do with the War on Obesity.

I'm giving up my car for two weeks. To get to work and tote my groceries, I'm riding my bicycle. Everywhere I can.

Am I nuts? Not really. I'm just cheap. I want to turn my belly-softening drive time into mandatory daily exercise. And most importantly, I want to see if it's economical, safe and sane for Shreveporters to wake up earlier and pedal their way to a paycheck.

Yes, yes, and yes. Money wise, the bike is a huge winner over a car, unless your time is worth a lot of money. The safety part depends on where you are riding, but - unless you are in Bossier - there is probably a safe way to get from any part of Shreveport to any other. I know, I've ridden most of them. And biking keeps you sane. It does me anyway. I hope Kent reaches the same conclusions. You can keep up with his adventure here.

I ride my bike for fitness, and I know plenty of other folks who do that as well. As exercise, you just can't beat the bike. Infinitely more fun than a gym but without the aches and pains of running, riding a bike would be worthwhile even if it did not have amazing fitness benefits.

Bikes are just as cool for utilitarian purposes. I titled this post because I'm jealous I can't ride my bike to work. I could, I guess, but it would be nearly one hundred miles a day. When we lived in B'ham, I used to commute by bike all the time to my law office. Loved it.  My normal  route was about four miles, nothing spectacular, but a very invigorating way to start and end the day. The car commute I have now just drains me. I absolutely hate it.

I can do plenty of other things via, bike, though. Being within easy walking and biking distance from daily activities was a big factor when we were looking for houses last fall. We succeeded, too. It's an easy five minute walk to church, the bike shop, a park, the library, a coffee shop, and what will be the kids' school in a few years. Within easy riding distance (less than fifteen minutes and no appreciable rise in heart rate) are several restaurants, more parks, the grocery store and the what will be the kids' middle and high schools.

I've already gotten my workout ride today, a pleasant 45 miles from the Uptown Shopping Center towards Belcher and then back. But after reading Kent's article, I might ride my cruiser over to the book store just for fun.

Seneng rasanya, ngeliat tim jagoan masuk ke final. Kalau di tarik kebelakang, perjalanan mereka emang kurang bagus. Liat aja, di Piala Dunia 2006, baru juga langkah awal, udah keok. Hmm.. Sekarang, kemajuan mereka pesat banget. Mungkin karena pengaruh para pemain yang lebih worth it dan lebih berkarakter kali yah. Semangat Spanyol!! Walaupun nanti akhirnya harus tunduk dari Jerman, at least perjalanan sepanjang Euro 2008 sangat membanggakan [well, mereka satu-satunya tim yang gak pernah kalah. Sekali pun!! 100% lhoo.. dan termasuk tim yang paling produktif gol]

Then..

Pertandingan yang paling ditunggu akhirnya dimulai dengan kick off dari Spanyol. Menit-menit awal, Jerman menguasai pertandingan tapi lambat-lambat Spanyol mulai nemu 'permainan' mereka. Di menit ke-32, Torres berhasil menjebol gawang Jerman. Kedudukan 1-0 untuk Spanyol. Menurut gue, gol ini terjadi karena kecerobohan Lehmann. Kalau aja dia gak maju dan percaya sama Lahm untuk jaga Torres, kemungkinan gol itu gak akan ada. Bukannya gue ngebelain Jerman, tapi gue jadi kasian. Hehhee..

Masuk babak dua. Sampai di menit 80, gol kedua pertandingan final itu belum juga ada [nungguin niih! Karena ini titik rawan gue. Gue selalu ketiduran di saat pertandingan menginjak menit 80. Nyebelin] dari tadi, kedua tim sama-sama ngebuat gawang lawan geregetan!! Passing-nya bagus-bagus dan berpotensi banget tapi belum ada satu pun yang berhasil. Sampai sekarang, udah ada beberapa pergantian pemain. Gue hafal Spanyol aja [maklum, pendukung Spanyol sih. Hehee] Fabregas diganti Xabi Alonso dan Torres diganti Guiza. Dari Jerman, klo gak salah yang udah diganti itu Lahm dan Klose.

Argghhh... gemes banget!! Senna gagal mengeksekusi passing dari ... [siapa yah? Gue lupa!!] padahal udah tepat di depan gawang!! Huh.

Laluu...

SPANYOL WIN!! Hore hore hore hore!!! Yesssss... seneng banget!! Akhirnya mereka ngedapetin Piala Euro lagi setelah 1964. Congrats, Spain!!

Mayor Cedric Glover and other local officials say an aquarium should anchor in downtown Shreveport.

Glover and representatives of [a bunch of groups] last week went to Chattanooga, Tenn., and Atlanta. . . .

“I’ve heard many expressions of intent across our community for the creation of a zoo in Shreveport, as a way to stimulate visitation by families to our City. That seems to be a worthwhile idea, but it also seems that, due to the unique influence on our region by the Red River and the system of lakes and tributaries, that we could do something truly distinctive by celebrating the role of water in our history and culture,” Glover said in a news release. “Working with key agencies involved in tourism, economic development and education, we are seeking to find successful examples of such efforts in other communities that we might emulate.”

The Tennessee Aquarium is recognized as a major source of the recent resurgence of downtown Chattanooga, the release said. It also is noteworthy for being the largest aquarium in the United States devoted to the study of freshwater marine habitat, particularly the Tennessee River environment.

As anyone who has read this blog for any length of time knows, I think Chattanooga is one of the coolest places in the South (see, e.g., here, and here). So any attempt to imitate them is, in my mind, a good idea.

Still, if we're dreaming big, why not go crazy?

First, how about taking full advantage of the Shreveport/Bossier riverfront by creating a pedestrian bridge across the Red River from downtown Shreveport to the Boardwalk in Bossier? Chattanooga has one, and it is one of the neatest parts of the town, connecting all the bigger entertainments on the one side (Aquarium, art museum, ball field) with the parks and artsy-fartsy stuff on the other. It also provides a great view of the whole area and is a nice place to relax. I know building a whole new bridge is probably impossible - Chattanooga repurposed an existing one - but how about renovating the Texas Street Bridge so that it is easily and readily accessible for walkers, bikers, strollers, and all other non-motorized traffic?

Second, let's continue to emphasize our strengths by eliminating the Clyde Fant Parkway south of SciPort and taking full advantage of all that riverfront real estate. No one would notice the Parkway's disappearance, and the six miles of what is now highway could become a real walking/bike path, mountain bike trails, ponds, parks, and who knows what else. (Maybe it could even link up with these.) That, folks, would make people happy and set our city apart from all others. For a good reason.

I know both of these things sound insane. I am convinced, though, that projects like these would do infinitely more to improve everyone's life than would the type of big money projects we normally worry about.

Anyway, it was fun. It was not all that different than a game between decent high school teams. The execution was good, though the plays and defenses were simple. The speed was about the same as high school. The coaches looked like coaches: Tight pants and big bellies. They acted like coaches, too. After giving up a touchdown to fall behind by twenty in the first half, the Fuel fumbled the following kickoff. Even from our side of the field, you could clearly see the opposing coach's clipboard fly through the air.

The only really defective part of the game was the one thing I would have guessed would be the equivalent of a men's game. Neither team had any kind of kicking game. I don't think anyone even tried a point after, and I had a hard time telling if the kickoffs were onsides kicks or just terrible kickoffs. Given that most of the time women try to make it to major college programs, it is as kickers, this surprised me. Other than that, though, they all played well.

My first thought was, "I guess it was nice of them to let him go after shooting him, but couldn't they have called a paramedic, or something?" Reading the article, though, reveals that they released a guy suspected of a shooting, rather than shooting a guy who was a suspect. Of course, given the crime of which he was suspected, he's lucky the latter construction didn't become the correct one.
