If you don't want to ruin the season please don't read this! For the rest of us who can't wait here we go:

• The action begins with a "future" Peter (Milo Ventimiglia, pictured) coming back to modern day in an effort to shoot Nathan (Adrian Pasdar) before he exposes their secret powers to the world.

• Matt (Greg Grunberg) discovers future-Peter's real identity — but is banished into the middle of nowhere before he can do anything about it.

• Mohinder (Sendhil Ramamurthy) finally isolates Maya's (Dania Ramirez) powers in chemical form, and uses a syringe to inject himself with the magic elixir rather than give the girl what she wants — freedom from the hell of her super-human affliction.

• Sylar (Zachary Quinto) traps Claire (Hayden Panettiere) in her house and literally rips open her head to steal her thoughts and ability to defy death, while...

• Hiro (Masi Oki) disobeys his dead father's command and opens up the office safe that holds part of a formula that, if completed, could destroy the world. Of course, it's confiscated within seconds by a mysterious, time-traveling blonde.

• There are also brief appearances by Niki (Ali Larter) — now looking professional and dating (or married to?) an older man — as well as Noah (Jack Coleman), who's locked up in an inescapable prison cell. Oh, and keep an eye out for a new animated image (painting?) that look likes the Earth is cracking in half.

• And did we say a newly powered-up Saresh gets to finally kick some ass?

O nome do episódio é "We're So Happy You're So Happy" (Estamos tão felizes por você estar tão feliz).

DH 5x02 - "We're So Happy You're So Happy" -- 17/07/08

NO BAR DO O'BRIEN - NOITE

MIKE
Susan, eu não faria isso --

Enquanto Susan pega alguns amendoins do bar e começa a jogá-los dentro do copo, um HOMEM chega.

Below is a comment/question from a reader about Batman:The Dark Knight, one that a few people have asked me, so I imagine it will be on the minds of many more people, and so it should probably be addressed with an article unto itself. Watching the film again you'll notice that everything dealing with Bruce Wayne throughout the film leads to what we're about to talk about. While my answer may not be sufficient for some, it will give you something to chew on. ***And yes there are spoilers that give away the end of the film included in this post!!!*** If you want to read my spoiler free review go here. But avoid reading the comments at that post because this question is included.

I enjoyed the movie, but had a big problem with the end. Why was it necessary for Batman to take the blame for Harvey’s killings? I remember they mumbled something about the Joker having an alibi, but what about the Joker’s many minions. Or a copycat Batman? Or an “unidentified assailant?” Or literally anyone else at all? Definitely brought the movie down from an A+ to a B+ for me. I know almost all big movies have plot holes, but this one seemed particularly egregious. Maybe I missed something and need to watch it again.

Ryan,

It's an exquisite question, one a good friend of mine had asked me a few days ago. So that people don't think it's a flaw of the film, which it's not, I'll go ahead and answer. You may not buy it but it will give you something to chew on.

Firstly, Joker did have an alibi, he was in prison while many of the murders that Harvey Dent was responsible for were taking place.

There's a theory in Psychology called Cognitive Dissonance, it's one of my favorite tools to use as a writer. It states:

In psychology cognitive dissonance is an uncomfortable feeling or stress caused by holding two contradictory ideas simultaneously. The theory of cognitive dissonance proposes that people have a fundamental cognitive drive to reduce this dissonance by modifying an existing belief, or rejecting one of the contradictory ideas.

In Bruce Wayne's case his dissonance is, "Do I hold onto the life I once had with Rachel?" or "Do I take hold of what Batman is and truly spread fear among the criminals of the city?" The truly tragic irony is that by trying to save Harvey he was saving for himself a way out of being Batman. With Harvey around as that shining force he wouldn't need to don the costume anymore.

But with Rachel killed in the process he solidifies his own path to remain Batman. Again ironic and again tragic. Many times throughout the film we see Bruce Wayne unable to control his vigilante impulses. In the interrogation room he slams the Joker's head against the glass. In the final moments of the film he battles Gordon's men. Is this who he wants to be or who he has to be?

That final decision is Wayne ending the dissonance within himself. And everything in the film leads to that decision. So while it may seem unnecessary it's actually far more necessary than you might imagine.

Certainly Batman didn't have to take the blame for the murders. But he chose to. What does that say about his character? And who he decides to be. Just before doing it he quotes Harvey, "Die while you're a hero or live long enough to become the villain," and then continues, "I'm not a hero." And he's not a villain. And from the way Harvey Dent is treated in this film he knows that a hero is someone you look up to, someone that can't have any faults. It's the type of light at the end of the tunnel Gotham or any city ravaged by crime needs.

This film is about people making decisions about who they are and how Batman should be perceived and about what it takes perhaps to truly have an effect on the criminal intent. In that final moment Bruce Wayne, after not being sure how far he should take Batman, decides what Batman should be for himself and the people. It's how he appears and is perceived. If he were the hero that Harvey Dent is, the citizens would hold him to a much higher standard. People would dress up like him and put themselves in harms way. It's not the kind of impact he wanted to have on the city, as he states at the beginning of the film.

There's something very telling about the story Alfred imparts when about burning down the jungle to get the thief. If Batman were the Harvey Dent kind of hero, he knows he wouldn't be able to do what needs to be done to get a criminal like Joker, as Alfred did. He knows as a hero higher standards will be placed upon him. And with those higher standards come a much higher level of courtesy, one Batman can't always afford to have. One that won't hold as much water for the bad guys in the long run. Again, especially bad guys like the Joker.

He knows he can't be a do-good fighter with crazies that don't have a code or follow any sort of rules. From the get go we're told that the Joker doesn't even follow the code of a bad guy. But imagine you were that thief and you knew Batman killed cops even to get the job done. How much more frightened would you be of him?

By taking the blame Bruce Wayne does far more than allow Harvey Dent to die a hero, he allows himself to become that much more of a myth among the people and the scum of Gotham. Now he's truly something to be feared, and like all of the decisions in this film their are consequences for these characters and Batman will have to live with being seen as a true vigilante for a long time.

This is Bruce Wayne committing himself to Batman and what Batman should and needs to be. Something he spends the entirety of the film trying to figure out and for a long period hoping to leave behind. That's why his decision is both noble and tragic. He can no longer go back.

[caption id="attachment_344" align="aligncenter" width="450" caption="Disillusioned no longer."][/caption]

Darlings! He’s not dead!
I know it’s confusing, but I’ll give you my take on it

Darlings! He's not dead! :)

I know it's confusing, but I'll give you my take on it... but first I'd like to thank everyone who's been diligently following the recaps and the drama, there are too many of you to name, but do know that I appreciate your feedback, encouragement and capslocked comments. :D

And sorry if this wasn't as early as usual, there was a slight delay in csub release... and torrenting sucked more than usual...

I think an appropriate song for this episode would be Homecoming, by Vienna Teng. Especially that one phrase, when she says, 'We all have our own endings, and we all have our own scars..." Anyway, on with the recap.

[audio=http://www.musicwebtown.com/sevenses/playlists/202128/1657461.mp3]

Episode 20, finale

The king comes back - as he remembers Yong as the one who came to voice the people's complaints. The king comments that the look in his eyes is memorable, but wonders why he is here. Yong makes something up about building up a Korea that takes care of its people, and that he's a guard because he wanted to contribute. He also adds that there weren't enough people to help out at the banquet, so the extra guards are doing what they can. He tells the king his 'real' name (he made something up) and gets away with it.

The mafia dude and the hunter's son tell him to do his stuff. They can take care of moving the stuff out.

Shi Hoo stares at the men to be shipped off and knows that Iljimae will come here for sure, however, he is called away. The guards for the men are tricked away by Yong in a palace soldier costume and the captured men make a successful escape. Shi Hoo runs back but is too late.

Iljimae continues searching through the different palace buildings while the captives dig at a particular spot in the palace. Escape tunnels ftw. Lol. The men's directions come from Daeshi's favourite wooden mask, which has instructions from Iljimae written on the inner side.

Shi Hoo studies maps of the palace and discovers a lotus pond in one of the older versions - he's certain that Iljimae is using this as an escape tunnel starting place. We also have shots of Yong expositing to his men in the lair about the different locations to dig from. Shi Hoo gets smart and tells Shi Wan and his people to wait in a certain area, as there will be diggers there. Yup, the diggers are the gangsters from some time ago.

Shi Wan orders three of his men to guard the diggers while the rest follow him down into the tunnel. Meanwhile, Daeshi is urging his fellow captives on, deep in the tunnel. Shi Hoo follows the tunnel from inside, and realizes that Iljimae had people digging at different spots.

Outside, the three remaining guards are tossed into the tunnel by Shim Deok, the shoemaker's dad and Eun Chae's servant's dad. The captives come out of another one entirely. There is a joyful reunion.

Shi Wan and co. are stuck walking inside a sewage tunnel while Shi Hoo gets the right tunnel, but again a step too late to be of any use.

Ahaha. Iljimae leads the hunter's son, the shoemaker and mafia dude into the royal treasury, where they take charge of stuffing all the valuables into sacks for transport. The hunter's son goes for the big stuff while the other two just stick jewelry into any available sack. (The shoemaker's still in his palace uniform, huh.) Anyway, Iljimae sets a timed bunch of what looks like dynamite in the treasure house, so that they explode right when the gala banquet starts.

Of course they can't carry around sacks of treasure, even as palace personnel there are limits, but they tie the bags to lotus lanterns that float on the surface so it can be retrieved later via the bridge we saw last episode.

The shoemaker goes back to work while the two outsiders work on getting back out of the palace.

We get a shot of the outside of the palace - many anxious people awaiting Iljimae's appearance, as well as those intimately connected with Yong, like his birth mother and Dani. The two mothers are super worried. Dani, in particular, looks like she's about to have a heart attack any time soon.

Inside, a furious (and foul-smelling) Shi Wan stomps around. He sees mafia dude and the hunter's son, still in their palace uniforms, taking a cart somewhere. He inspects it, but there's nothing but old burlap bags on the cart. He lets them go.

Meanwhile, the king reflects on the young man he met. Then a frantic noble shows up (it's the one who blackmailed him earlier, what a shrill voice, and not only shrill, but also constipated) all flustered about the missing conscripts. The king reassures him that he has the situation in hand, only to be forced to stamp an agreement to let the Ming revivalists use Korea as a military base. (Hm. I wonder who has military bases in Korea now.)

King's not happy, and he's probably going to do something about it. In the meantime, he can party! But the banquet is not at all festive, and even the music and dancing sound pretty flat.

On Jeju island, Eun Chae is enjoying playtime with little kids while her father fumes at not being able to fish anything. Byun Shik grumbles about being still here, and looks over at his daughter - he is resigned to her forever helping the poor, but that doesn't mean he's happy about it. A servant brings news of Iljimae's latest doings, and Byun Shik gleefully cheers him on as a sort of petty vengeance against the king for demoting him. However, he forbids all mentions of Iljimae in front of Eun Chae.

The bombs set inside the palace explode, creating mass panic. The king is shepherded to a safe spot after his tents collapse while the constipated voice noble gets his paper stolen. I love the scene when a giant white sheet unrolls to show the trademark sprig of red plum blossoms in front of the main palace.

Take that, king.

Mafia dude and the hunter's son take advantage of the ensuing chaos to get their goods out of the palace. However, Shi Wan recognizes the mafia dude (also cowardly and does not want to face the potential of confronting Iljimae while guarding the king, I bet) and stops them. Fortunately, mafia dude's underlings come dressed up as soldiers and fool Shi Wan into letting them run towards more guards. When these guards actually escort the mafia dude out, Shi Wan gives chase, only to be held back at the palace gate by lit coal-lobbing peasants.

Night has fallen, and the king puzzles out what Iljimae's actually searching for (he's hit all the symbol marked palace buildings save one and is working on it as they speak)...

Kyumi's mother notices Dani asking after Yong frantically, but goes back to holding her anxious vigil - not sure if she knows who her son is, but surely even she knows that he couldn't have been a Manchurian envoy.

Shi Hoo does recon at the bombed palace building and notices a bell engraved with a tattoo of one of the dead men. He starts to suspect something.

Meanwhile, Iljimae is having trouble with the lock to the last palace. It requires four keys, but he only has three (the last key is in the king's hands, and it's also the only copy). The last building has important files from the time of the rebellion and something else too... anyway, the king sends his soldiers there to guard against Iljimae entering.

Aww, while Yong is panicking at not being able to pick the lock, Swe Dol's spirit appears and tells him to cool down and open the lock. He does so just in time to avoid the assassin dude.

Meanwhile, constipated noble demands to see the king but is taken to the assassin. He isn't allowed to see the king and gets angry, insulting the assassin that he was just a peasant when the king took him in (thus he serves the king so loyally?) he also shouts that the assassin better not think he is the king just because he gets preferential treatment. Anyway, the noble gets super fussy and annoyed and decides to hand over the document incriminating the king in Lee Won Ho's death to the chief investigator of the state.

The assassin gets up and kills him from behind. Shi Hoo witnesses this, as well as where he stored the incriminating document.

Iljimae gets to the chamber of secrets (har har, sorry) and notices an infrared-like criss-cross of fine threads across the floors. He gets his nifty crossbow out and decides to climb through the chamber on a rope. This works really well until Iljimae notices a really large painting of the king. He stops.

Cut to Shi Hoo sneaking in and reading the document - really just words written in blood, on a paper. He reads it and finds out the truth of the matter - that the king had Lee Won Ho killed and then framed as a traitor. He remembers the noble father and son duo who saved him when he was a child. (Yay for worldview shifts!)

At the same time, his half brother stares at the overlarge portrait of the king in shock as he sees the symbol of his father's killer on the king's sword. Yong realizes that his target is the teddybear king. (Still probably doesn't realize he's royal blood, but okay.) He's immobilized by shock for a moment.

Shi Hoo, done with the document, picks up something else that looks familiar, and it's the evidence he planted so many years ago - and he fully realizes his own role in his father's death.

I like the rather obvious juxtaposition as both brothers finally get to the same point in their investigations. :D

The king is still wondering why Iljimae's gone after the areas he has, and he finally realizes that Yong's gaze is the same as Lee Won Ho's, especially when they talk about the people of Korea. He gives an order for them to capture Lee Kyum, and staggers around being crazy.

People shoot arrows at the rapidly advancing Iljimae, but the roof is awfully far and he's unharmed. Shi Hoo comes out to the courtyard and sees the king fleeing somewhere. Iljimae comes off from the roof to get to where he thinks the king is, kicking aside all opposition, but the king's already fled to his underground bunker.

He comes out, only to be confronted with a bazillion more guards. Shi Hoo comes upon the scene, and takes a moment to rip his clothes (minds out of gutter, thank you) to write a message with his own blood for Kyum. Then he jumps into the fray, pretending to be fighting Iljimae, but only passing on a message. (Who the heck is in charge of choreographing the fight? It looks like drunken gymnastics.) Yong knows he can't kill Shi Hoo, but they're about the same level of skill, and getting tangled here would be bad.

But! Shi Hoo gets Iljimae tangled somewhere far away (relatively speaking) from the other soldiers and tells him that he is also Lee Won Ho's son. (Yay!) He hands Yong the message then leaps back to fight the oncoming soldiers. And unlike Kyum, he's totally okay with killing the opponent.

The slip of fabric tells him that the king is in the vault Iljimae broke into last. He goes to search, but drops his father's lockpick on the network of strings tied to bells. Four soldiers come out and fight him, but he dispatches them in a few seconds. Lucky for him, both assassins have been called away to meet Kunghe.

The assassin dude is like, I was going to kill you anyway, but thanks for coming here on your own. The unarmed Kunghe has only one request - and that is for them to spare Iljimae, but instead the assassin brings the king into the conversation, and mentions betrayal etc. Kunghe says:

Betray our heaven? Do you still think of him as your heaven? That serving him would be to serve the great purpose of your life? Remember for what purpose we first followed him? Gwanghaegun, who killed his own mother and brothers to get the throne, was not fit for it. But he has killed his own brother and good friends, and even his own son, to preserve his seat on the throne.

The assassin replies:

To admit that he has made those mistakes, that would make me, who served him all my life, be only a killing demon. So I must believe that he is still the sky, and that serving him is to serve a great purpose. I will use all my forces to protect the king.

He leave, with an order to the second assassin to kill Kunghe. Kunghe is a much better fighter, of course, and wrenches his weapon out of his hands - and he also doesn't kill his opponent.

We switch shots to see Bong Soon walking into the lair on crutches (see, she was alive). She is, I think, wearing a wig, because even allowing for summer weather, there is no way her hair is that messy and big naturally. Anyway, she reaches out to touch Iljimae's armour (this must be the night before, as Iljimae is wearing his armour right now). She talks to the armour, asking Yong to come back safely and take her away somewhere.

Flashback to Yong looking up from a map of the palace, alone, as he notices the armour. He clutches a sleeve gratefully and murmurs to himself that Bong Soon is alive.

In the underground place, the king has gone more than little bit crazy from fear. He turns around to see Iljimae enter.

King: Who are you, that you dare to enter even this place? The ignorant call you a king and you believe them?

He draws out his sword and waves it at him. Honestly, it would have been better for him to not have done that, because that just makes Iljimae angry, seeing the symbol on the sword and confirming that he is indeed his father's murderer. (And I love LJK as much as the next fan, but the Darth Vadar voice of doom has to stop. The heavy breathing too.)

Iljimae: Why did you kill my father? Why?
King: I should have killed you too. The sun in the sky wasn't Won Ho, it was you. Because of you, my innocent little brother was killed.
Iljimae: Little brother? What little brother? Then... Why did you kill him? Why did you kill my father?
King: To keep my throne, I am willing to do worse than that.
Iljimae: So you were willing to kill your son, and countless innocents?!
King: Be it a little brother or a son, as soon as they threaten my throne, I will kill them. And that includes you!

The king lifts the sword and intends to chop Iljimae, but um, really bad fighting skills.

Iljimae: What kind of king are you? People don't need a king like you. Prepare to die!

(It sounds corny, but is much better delivered onscreen.)

Anyway, we switch scenes to Kunghe fighting with assassin 2. Kunghe beats him, but doesn't not kill him, instead pushing his spear into the ground (and this sort of marks another parallel scene in the episode, where teacher and student are both struggling with some issues).

Iljimae holds the king hostage with his own sword and goes out, intending to take him to the plum tree and make him apologize to his father's spirit. No one dares to hurt him, as he is holding the king. Then, Mr. Assassin comes out of the crowd.

Outside, the anxious people are narrating his every move. One person predicts that he will die, surrounded as he is by imperial soldiers. On hearing this, Dani cries out for Yong. Kyum's mother decides to approach her but faints before she can. Dani cradles the semi-conscious woman and hears her murmur "Kyumi" under her breath. She understands who this is.

As Iljimae stands thronged by swords, Shi Hoo leaps out of nowhere and comes to his exposed side. He looks his brother in the eye and they acknowledge each other. The assassin looks shocked. Kunghe leaps out of nowhere, on his other side, and tells him to finish what he began. The assassin looks astounded.

Then he gives the order for them to attack.

Kunghe and Shi Hoo take care of the imperial soldiers while Yong drags the king away. Shi Hoo is awesome, and Kunghe takes down everyone with a branch. The assassin takes a moment to slip past the two and follow Iljimae.

Iljimae shoves the king in a kneeling (hands and knees) position at the base of the plum tree. The king apologizes to his brother's spirit, and agrees to overturn the charges of treason against Lee Won Ho and his family. Iljimae also tells him to apologize to the innocent peasants he killed, but I think the king's reason's gone already, as he's mumbling to himself.

Iljimae: I have two fathers. One who taught me the meaning of right, and one who only stupidly cherished me, and sacrificed himself. But what kind of father are you? To your own son, and to your own people?! You don't deserve any priviledges. Give up your throne right now!

The king is silent on this.

Iljimae: Swear that you will!
King: Alright, I will.
Iljimae: If you do not keep your oath, I will come and steal from you again.
King: But why won't you just kill me? (Uh, don't tempt him, you ... you thing.)

He plunges the sword into the ground and tells the king to go. As if he doesn't believe it himself, the king gets up and staggers away slowly, murmuring 'Won Ho' periodically. (I'd say this was a symptom of being clinically insane, but I'm not qualified to say that yet.)

Ginkgo Hillside plays
[audio=http://www.musicwebtown.com/sevenses/playlists/202128/1649019.mp3]

Kyum falls to the ground, and says to his father: I couldn't do it, I couldn't kill him in the end. I did the right thing, father, right?

The assassin comes from behind and attacks him for humiliating his 'heaven'. A very exciting fighting scene follows, in which the assassin wrenches Iljimae's sword from him, but Iljimae returns the favour. He holds the sword to the assassin's neck, but throws it away at the last second. (My god, didn't you learn from the first time you did that?)

The assassin picks up Iljimae's sword lying on the ground and slashes him in the back. He falls. The assassin looks at Iljimae lying on the ground, almost not believing it, and we switch scenes to idyllic Jeju.

Flower's Message plays
[audio=http://www.musicwebtown.com/sevenses/playlists/202128/1657346.mp3]

Eun Chae stares off into the ocean, wearing a plain hanbok. Bong Soon looks at the lantern Yong made for her, still in the night before all this. (Chronology's a bit messed up.)

We switch scenes again, to the assassin walking along the walls of Lee Won Ho's house, when a blood-covered Shi Hoo comes up suddenly and slits his throat.

Shi Hoo: You taught me to kill the person standing in my path, be he a buddha or a friend. I am also Lee Won Ho's son.

(Fangirls can swoon now.)

Kyum lies on the ground of the plum orchard, hallucinating and remembering his two fathers. His eyes stay open as the plum petals fall on him. Fade out.

4 years later.

At a bookseller's, which barely covers its porn distribution (Lol, titles include The King and the Woman, and Love Between Dog and Wolf. A reference? Methinks so.) is a small child, much like Yong in appearance and action. The stallowner tries to chase him away.

The kid is five years old, tall because he's like his mother, and he's missing a tooth because he's like his dad. (Um, I get the cute value, but genetics doesn't work that way.) Lol, he gets chased off.

He bumps into Bong Soon, dressed as a disheveled boy, running away, and she asks him who he is.

"I'm Namyon's beloved baby boy! ... Ketong." (Ketong means dog poo, and was the name Swe Dol had initially wanted to give Yong.) Anyway, he goes on to say that his dad thought it was cool, and blames him for ruining his image in the eyes of everyone who hears his real name. Then he runs to his mommy.

She turns around to see Dani and Kyum's mother, who must have raised him together. Anyway, there's an awkward hello and goodbye scene, with both sides assuring the other that everyone's well.

Switch to Eun Chae looking at her guest house nostalgically, having been in Jeju these past four years... or not? Her servant runs up and blames her for not sending any news this past four years. She is married to mafia dude and their baby daugher is named after Kyum's sister, Yeon. Eun Chae compliments them on the baby, but her servant grumbles that it's the name of his first love, but he won't say who... :D

Eun Chae asks after 'that child' and they both look super awkward. They reassure her that he's doing well and usher her in. She remembers Shi Hoo, and he's doing well too.

In fact, the guy has gone off and started a martial arts school. I love that he's training girls alongside the boys. LOVE. The only remaining assassin urges him to go back to working in the palace, as no one saw what happened that day (given, anyone who saw is probably dead by Shi Hoo's hand). Shi Hoo demurs, as he wants to stay here and teach the children. He likes it better, and he also won't give up the proof that Lee Won Ho was innocent. To him, doing this will allow him to protect the people his younger brother wanted to protect.

Eun Chae is back at the tree, looking at the blossoms. As she turns to leave, she hears the warbler singing. She remembers both little Kyum telling her the story and Yong telling her that even if 'that child' was dead, he would be happy.

Ketong, meanwhile, is watching Daeshi's performance troupe. A mysterious dude in black leaps around on the rope (dude, harking back to King and the Clown days?) Daeshi and his father narrate, with Daeshi saying the famous words, "There's nothing in this world I can't steal, because I'm Iljimae!"

A bystander comes and tells them that the night before, some important official's home was robbed, and in the exact style Iljimae used four years ago. Daeshi and Shim Deok look silent, while Eun Chae's servant's father protests that it's all different. When the bystander scoffs, they bring up the matter that he was deported to China or dead - one rumour per person. (LOL. So he's not dead, see? They're trying to cover it up so they don't start off a giant manhunt again.)

Ketong comes in the middle of their little crowd and mixes everything up like his father did with the previous set of rumours, but he confuses it too, grumbling about never having this memorized properly, and ruffling his hair, goes off. The adults look tense.

Mr. Shoemaker has gone back to his trade amongst the commoners, and is delivering shoes to a far distant shore, where Kunghe is living. Kunghe is annoyed that he's so late, but the shoemaker only adds that telling him to deliver the shoes to someplace so far is considered harassment. He also delivers a threat from Shim Deok that if he stays out here and calls that prostitute out one more time, she will move her alehouse to the island to keep an eye on him.

Inside the package, there are two pairs of shoes. Kunghe picks them up (and litters) and shouts out for 'that girl'. (Note: The translations say 'that girl', but many people who understand Korean have said that it's more accurately interpreted 'that rascal', especially in light of what the PD has revealed about the ending. Also, 'that rascal' is a habitual nickname for Yong that Kunghe uses in the earlier episodes.)

The shoemaker's father is making a living telling stories. Ketong appears, and annoys the old man by stealing his story away from him. He tells the true story of Iljimae's return - from the mouth of babes shall you hear the truth and all that - and the king's completely bonkers, by the way. The imperial guard think Iljimae is dead, but then he appears and the show picks up from episode one.

The king's afraid, because he didn't keep his promise, and now Iljimae's come to steal from him.

Once the job's done, he returns to his plum tree and awaits. He turns his head as the plum flower petals fall...

End episode.

Commentary/Rambling:

- It has been great fun writing this post, but I realized that I have so much to say I think I'd better defer my comments to another post altogether. And besides, this post is already 4200 words long. I think I'll spare your eyes for a while longer. Shoo! Go outside! Enjoy the fresh air! Go swimming!

- Feel free to leave questions and comments! I'll get back to you as soon as I'm rested and up! :D

05/05 - Nicollette Sheridan [...] will continue to wreak her special brand of havoc on Wisteria Lane next season, despite rumors to the contrary (and despite the fact that she's not scheduled to appear in the last two hours of this season).

Smallville Preview: Will Lana Rock Clark’s World?
In Part 2 of TVGuide.com’s Smallville

Smallville Preview: Will Lana Rock Clark's World?

In Part 2 of TVGuide.com's Smallville preview, exec producers Brian Peterson and Todd Slavkin give their take on Season 8 (which arrives Sept. 18th ) by talking about the return of Green Arrow and offering an update on important people in Clark's life (Lex, Lana and Martha included). Plus: Which DC Universe players you will — and won't — be seeing this year. — Michael Maloney

TVGuide.com: How did the WGA strike affect your storytelling last season?
Brian Peterson: We were only short two episodes; we did 20 out of the 22 [originally planned]. We actually got to complete most of our storylines that we set, especially the dynamics with Clark and Lex and also Lex and Lionel, including the final turn of Lex killing his father.

TVGuide.com: It was tough seeing John Glover leave, because he made such a great Lionel.
Todd Slavkin: John's a great actor and a great man — we miss him dearly — but it was always in the cards that Lex murdering his father would aid in his descent into evil. [Original show runners] Al [Gough] and Miles [Millar] had always had that idea. Still, it was tough to do.

TVGuide.com: I was telling Justin Hartley that I hope his return to the show as a regular means more Oliver and Lois. It's a successful pairing, even though it's outside the comic-books' mythos.
Peterson: Al and Miles really set up a show in which every character and every situation has a slight twist to it from the mythos, much like the different versions of the comic books do. We really pay attention to the mythos, but then try to put a spin on it. This year, we're introducing Davis Bloome (Battlestar Galactica's Sam Witwer) as Doomsday [the comic book villain that "killed" Superman in 1992], and we have a completely different take on it. As the season goes by, people will find he's very much in line with the mythology.

TVGuide.com: But Doomsday won't have the concrete jagged edges coming out of his body?
Slavkin: It's a reimagination and a reinvention. We didn't want to take a character straight out of the comics, just as Al and Miles took Lex and created their very own version, which, in our minds, is the best version of any Lex Luthor in the history of the Superman folklore. We're doing the same thing with Doomsday. So while we definitely make a nod to the original, this is our own. I think the fans will be pleasantly excited.

TVGuide.com: What can you say about the statuses of Kristin Kreuk (Lana) and Michael Rosenbaum (Lex)? I have to say, Michael makes every actor he's in a scene with a better one.
Peterson: Michael is fantastic. His rendition of Lex Luthor helped make the show what it is today. Obviously, we were very sad to see him go. He's pursuing his own interests and we're hoping the door is definitely open for him to return. We've not seen the last of Lex Luthor.
Slavkin: Kristin will return for at least five episodes this season. [Lana] will appear at an inopportune time for Clark. We don't want to give away when it will happen, but it's going to be an awesome moment in the history of Smallville when Kristin Kreuk comes back.

TVGuide.com: Great casting with Black Canary last year. And her "Canary cry" was well-done, special effects-wise.
Peterson: Alaina [Huffman] is great and she's a big part of the season premiere. This is a year in which Clark is really embracing being a superhero and his double identity, but at the same time some of his friends in the Justice League are thrown into crises of their own. It's going to be an interesting year as Clark grows into himself.

TVGuide.com: What about Impulse and Cyborg? Tom Welling easily taps into Clark's protective side whenever he plays big brother to Impulse.
Slavkin: Clark's such a great role model. He has a sense of integrity about himself that he always passes on to young characters. The actors who play Impulse and Cyborg are phenomenal and we'd love to have them back sometime. In the premiere it's an incarnation of the Justice League that you've yet to see: Black Canary, Green Arrow and Aquaman (Alan Ritchson). The three of them are all searching for the missing Clark.
Peterson: That takes an interesting twist, too.

TVGuide.com: Annette O'Toole's Martha is a vital element in Clark's life. Might she be back?
Peterson: We're hoping. We actually have a very interesting idea for bringing her back. We hope it comes to fruition.
Slavkin: She's on Broadway right now [in Kindness], so if we can fit her into our schedule that would be great. She's a character we miss dearly because Ma Kent, like Pa Kent, has had such an impact on Clark.

TVGuide.com: Have we seen the last of Supergirl/Kara (Laura Vandervoort)?
Slavkin: She'll be back for a show, we hope.

TVGuide.com: Has DC said no to Bruce Wayne ever appearing on Smallville? Apparently, there's this movie out now featuring Batman....
Slavkin: It's a rights issue.
Peterson: We are going to have several DC Comics characters on the show this season. We have Maxima coming. Also, Plastique is going to be in Episode 2 [played by Jessica Parker Kennedy]. She has flame/explosive powers.
Slavkin: There's nothing better than to have an intergalactic sex goddess — Maxima — come into the DC Universe and have her try to mate with Clark.

TVGuide.com: How about for an episode introducing a beautiful blond telepath, a dark-haired guy with magnetic powers and a reddish-brown haired guy with lightning powers to play the founding members of the Legion of Superheroes?
Peterson: [Exchanging a look with Slavkin] We haven't thought about that actually. Hmm....

Boy, Samuel Witwer sure does give good genre. First he was pilot Crashdown on Battlestar Galactica,

Boy, Samuel Witwer sure does give good genre. First he was pilot Crashdown on Battlestar Galactica, and now he'll be taking on Superman himself in season eight of Smallville. According to Witwer, his newly introduced regular character, Davis "Doomsday" Bloome, starts out as a good guy (who has designs on Ms. Chloe herself), but before too long his romantic quest is interrupted by waking nightmares that bode not well for Chloe, Davis, Clark or Metropolis at large. Read on to hear what Samuel had to say about working with Allison Mack, creating Bloome's dark side and why Doomsday is unique in the pantheon of Superman villains.

Explain Doomsday to all those out there who might not know who he is.
Doomsday is a significant character in D.C. Comics mythology because he is the only character to kill Superman. They came up with him because they were like, OK, Lex Luthor is really smart, he's great, and they have all these other villains, like Brainiac, but no one can actually get into a knock-down, drag-out [fight] with Superman. So they came up with this invulnerable character, who was also from Krypton, called Doomsday.

Why is he evil if Superman is so nice?
Well, in our version, in our interpretation of the character, there are very specific reasons. I can't really go into them, but what I can tell you is the character's name is Davis Bloome. He's a paramedic in Metropolis, he's very good at his job, and he was raised in the foster system. He went from home to home—he's this survivor character, and he's kind of an outsider. But he's a really nice guy, really cool guy.

How is he introduced?
He's brought into the story when he strikes up a friendship with Chloe (Allison Mack) on the show. Chloe is dating Jimmy Olsen (Aaron Ashmore), so he doesn't want to step in—he's too nice of a guy to steal her. Because who wants to steal from Jimmy Olsen? Sweet little red-haired kid. Anyway, David starts losing large amounts of time. He's blacking out. He doesn't understand why.

Uh-oh.
Yeah, eventually this character will embark on a quest to find out why these blackouts are happening, and what he discovers is horrifying for the character, and hopefully horrifying for the audience. The producers, I don't know if they saw me in The Mist or in Dexter, but they approached me for the role, and they pitched a very interesting idea, and they wanted to get dark with it. Like darker than anything than anything that's been on the show. They want to get really psychologically messed-up.

It must be really hard for Davis when he finds out he's a psychotic supervillain.
Yeah. There are some really cool ideas around that. What do you when you find out you are the opposite of what you ever wanted to be? If you found out you were a murderer, and you didn't know this, what would you do? By the end of the season, in Davis Bloome's case, he's going to be trying to be the same guy, but he's...distressed.

Have you worked with any of the regulars yet?
I worked with Allison Mack yesterday, and she's a sweetheart. She's sort of my contact person into the world of the characters and the story. As for how he relates to all the other characters, that remains to be seen.

How long is this arc?
I'm going to be there the whole season. We just started shooting this week, and over the course of the season, the fans will start to recognize Doomsday as he was in the comics, but at first that's not the case.

Ausiello: Would you believe sweeps? Shocking, I know. According to exec

producer Brian Wayne Peterson, who I cornered at The CW's press tour party last week, Kreuk's five-episode stint as Lana will kick off in early November. "She'll come back at a very inopportune time for Clark," he hints. In the meantime, while Ms. Lang's off "giving Clark some space," the man who would be Super will be growing closer to Lois. "They'll be working together this year at Daily Planet," Peterson says, "and some friction is going to come out of that." Not to mention several winks to classic Superman lore — beginning in the season premiere. Teases Peterson: "There might be a phone booth moment between the two of them."

Now that Al Gough and Miles Millar are gone from Smallville, will the new show-runners amend their "No flights, no tights" policy? — Jeremy
Ausiello: Um… hell, yeah! "We are respecting everything that Al and Miles have set up," offers Peterson, choosing his words carefully. "All I'll say is we can definitely guarantee that there are no tights."

Any other scoop about Smallville? — Patricia
Ausiello: Obviously, I wasn't going to cut Peterson lose without asking him about Smallville's most celebrated non-couple, Clark and Chloe. "We definitely touch on [her feelings for him]," he says. Adds fellow EP Todd Slavkin: "They've been best friends for a long time, and Clark would never get in the way of her pursuing her happiness. But oftentimes, feelings have a way of creeping in. That's all we'll say." Um, you've said more than enough, my friend. More than enough!

Having watched 20 live, I feel like spitting blood, but okay, here's your recap. More thanks to the lovely people over at tsks for the subs!

Have some music! Iljimae OST track 4: Fate, by Woong San

[audio=http://www.musicwebtown.com/sevenses/playlists/202128/1657351.mp3]

Episode 19

Yay! Shi Hoo doesn't die. The assassin can't bring himself to kill Shi Hoo after all. I mean, his student just kneels there and accepts giving up his life, and the dude in purple has a heart. Assassin number 2 comes up with news that their troops came upon Iljimae in the mountain.

Yong looks for Bong Soon, but is intercepted by Shim Deok, who has a letter from Kunghe. The letter says, in Kunghe's voice:

"Bong Soon only wants to find the person who killed her parents and brother and avenger herself. She lived for this all her life. But she has decided to abandon that and die for you. As for me, I will not let my daughter go to her death this way. If I die, Yong, please take care of her for me. She really is very pitiful."

Cue Yong running frantically to the mountains to try to find Bong Soon. Also cue Bong Soon running like the wind (a very cute wind) in front of a mass of killers. She is cornered on the edge of a cliff, and unless I'm mistaken, it's the cliff Kyum fell off years ago, and the one Hong Gil Dong fell off, in another time.

Oh, bad. Bong Soon is surrounded, and assassin 2 is a better fighter than she is. Damn it. Kunghe runs up, and asks to kill Iljimae, blaming his daughter's death on him. Bong Soon is wounded and lying on the ground. Assassin 1 is happy at seeing his old 'look', which is his killing look, I guess.

Bong Soon, wearing armour and wounded, tries to rally, but is beaten back by Kunghe all the way to the cliff. Poor thing. It's killing him too, but I think he's doing this for show. Anyway, she's at the end of her forces, and Kunghe cries, remembering her the first time he gave her food and adopted her. He says to himself, Bong Soon, don't be afraid, dad is here with you.

Yong gets here in time to sob in the bushes after seeing them both fall off the cliff. The assassin is startled but gives an order to gather the corpses.

The king's discussing with one of his nobles - apparently the Ming revivalists also want to get help from him - and he received significant help from them when he overthrew the other emperor. The noble, interestingly, threatens the king with the document that reveals Lee Won Ho's innocence.

He gives in to the noble. But since the Qing emissaries are coming, everything has to be kept hush hush.

Yong is sitting in his room, with blankets nailed against the windows. His shoemaker friend comes in and rips them off. He wants to shake Yong into action. Yong keeps dwelling on the fact that he ended up harming both Bong Soon and her brother. The shoemaker tells him that the banquet is tomorrow, so he should move quickly, and that all of Korea is mourning his supposed passing. His own father hasn't been eating. Awww.

Anyway, news about Daeshi and co. being prepped to be moved into battle gets him to do the right stuff. He goes to his lair and looks at the paintings, thinking that if he hadn't recovered his memories, his sister, foster-father, Bong Soon and Kunghe wouldn't have died. He promises to find the person who killed his father.

Yay, things move ahead. And then, of course, Yong notices that his armour is still there. Well, last we saw that suit, Bong Soon was wearing it. So she's alive, just lying low. :D I don't care who tells me that she fell off a cliff. If a nine year old like Kyum could survive, then why would two adults not?

Byun Shik is bribing the ambassador, and both indulge in some complaining about the king. Lols. The ambassador promises to speak up for him in a few days. In the meantime, Byun Shik would do better to go to Jeju first.

The shoemaker stops by the lair and gets complained at for being late. He's happy Yong is back in shape. Yong explains the mystery behind the symbols and the tattoos. His plan is to search the palace while rescuing the people and stealing all sorts of stuff. Wow. All on his lonesome. That's going to be tough.

Hyung Kyeung takes up this point and Yong persists in being a lone hero. Thankfully, Mr. Shoemaker ends up persuading Yong that playing a lone hand is a bad idea when the project is so large, and they call in their reinforcements.

Recruit #1: Mafia dude.

Shoemaker tells Yong about the poison in the crown prince's medication, but Yong doesn't believe him, and calls him a pessimist (uh, I wish). He's also spruced up the armour a bit, so it fits better now. :D

Mafia dude arrives, thinking that the forge is a hideout for the rival gang. He's looking for Yong - it's hilarious that mafia dude mistakes Iljimae for a rival gang boss. Lol. He reveals himself and scares everyone. Mafia dude's chin hits the ground.

Shi Hoo and Shi Wan are given leave to say bye to their dad.

Mafia dude pledges everyone in his gang, and when he's thanked, he says it's an honour to help Iljimae. The hunter comes looking for Kyum and asks if he can help, if he couldn't, then he volunteers his son. (So really, everyone knows who he is?)

Someone comes into the lair and tells him that Shi Wan is looking for him. Aww, Shi Wan leaks info again. His entire family is leaving for Jeju, as it happens, so he has vacation, and he took the time to see Yong. Wow, he's nice to Yongi.

Byun Shik calls Shi Hoo over and tells him that he's always been proud of having him as a son. He's heard to what Shi Hoo's done for Eun Chae, what's more. Even though he's been next to useless as a father, he still feels gratified that Shi Hoo's been able to make it in on his own strengths. He asks him to take care of Shi Wan, who is nasty to him only because he is better. Shi Hoo is very quiet, and leaves right away.

Before he leaves, he asks about his mother. Byun Shik tells him that she was a servant of Lee Won Ho's. Shi Hoo is shocked and goes to investigate the house where they used to live. He is all like, this is where my dad used to live, huh. Then he feels that this house is familiar.

Shi Wan drags a protesting Yong to his house, all omniscient about his feelings for Eun Chae. Lol. Poor girl still has a scar on her forehead. During goodbyes, Yong looks all awkward. Shi Wan pushes Yong in front of Eun Chae. She tells him to take care.

He watches her leave, and she slows too, as she almost senses something about him.

Flashback to Eun Chae hugging Iljimae from behind. He didn't let her take his mask off, in the end. *sigh* Iljimae, why so cold? It's obvious when he's leaving, that he can't take this much farther. Anyway, I think Eun Chae's subconscious already knows. (Evil writers.)

Shi Hoo comes upon Dani sewing up night clothes for Yong. He asks if he really is dead. She agrees but he can tell Yong is alive. He's all angry now... wow, he is still resolved to fight Iljimae if he goes into the palace. Only now, he doesn't agree that sharing the same father will guarantee affection (look at Shi Wan) and despises Lee Won Ho for sending his mother away. He sees Lee Won Ho as a traitor towards the king as well as towards the woman who always loved him, even after his death.

He's angry that she still loves him enough to raise his son in secret. Still denying this link between them, oh Shi Hoo, aren't we stubborn.

Shi Hoo goes to tell his mentor that Iljimae is still alive. His mentor decides to recall all the soldiers who have been sent away, to the objections of number two, who believes that Iljimae is really dead. He also wants to know why Shi Hoo is still alive, since he obviously 'betrayed' them... but his mentor mentions that Shi Hoo is very like him when he was young, and gives him a bit of leeway.

Ha. Iljimae shoots an arrow message to the palace. :D :D :D

The king is furious. The assassin realizes what Kunghe was doing (his real name is Yong Ji) but he can't do much now besides curse his name.

The plan moves forward with our daring gang. They're stealing food and treasures - hitting the two separately, while Iljimae rifles through the royal archives and armouries. At the same time (the still clueless) Daeshi is supposed to lead the captive men out.

Mr. Shoemaker takes advantage of his superior shoemaking skills to get copies of all the necessary keys. His father goes to the adults, who are spying on the youngsters, because they want to know what's going on - but he gets everything confused. Lol.

Lol, the musicians for the gala banquet are supposed to be men, but they are so women. Anyway, Mafia dude sneaks in as a merchant, Shoemaker dude is already inside, and Yong...? Gosh, you have to watch this.

Dani walks into the lair, telling him not to go... because she's worried for him - but he promises her that he'll be fine. She gives him new black clothes, because, in her words, "We can't be ruining Iljimae's image."

Aww, she's all touchy-feely now.

Kyum's real mom notices that the prostitute has her son's medallion, takes it and runs to ask Shi Wan where he got it. She manages to get him to tell her that the medallion belongs to Yong. She drops the medallion in the pathway, just as the third Qing general arrives. But! It's actually Yong in disguise - the hunter's son switches the portrait of the offical expected so Yong gets in.

Just then, he looks over to the side where his mother is picking up the ornament, and they recognize each other. (I can see how he would recognize her, but not how she'd recognize him... it's been like 14 years.)

They're both really happy that the other is alive. He doesn't know that she knows his other identity, so he's all teary that he's missed her again. But no, they will meet.

The plan involves a large amount of grass under a bridge, and sawing away at the tents used for the gala. Don't ask me. I don't know what's going on either.

Daeshi's training super hard.

(I can't help but snorfle at Yong's fake Manchurian costume. It's so ridiculously wrong.)

There is an exchange of civilities between the greeting officer and our Yongi. Haha! They are taken in by the amount of treasures Yong brings in as a 'gift' for the king, but they really hide his costume and stuff, plus, the riches prepared for the real ambassador are being stolen and replaced with a dog food bowl, fake ginseng and very cheap wine.

The king comes to greet the ambassador, but is instead faced with a painting of plum blossoms. He's furious. Also, losing a bit of his cool.

Lol, the real ambassador is stuck at the gates. Man, his Chinese is bad. It took Chinese subtitles for me to frakkin understand what he was saying in Chinese.

Iljimae gets to the royal archives and starts searching all the swords. Ooooh, books. We know that the sword is with the king, so he's going to be searching for a while. Iljimae still doesn't suspect the king, however. Searching the quarters of the king's security now. Still no sword.

Hmm. He's flipping through all sorts of books, in another library, when Shi Wan comes on him. Shi Wan stays back, while the rest of his men get super beaten. Aha, this is all set up! There are timed release arrows (candles are involved, don't ask) outside, and Iljimae leaves by stepping on the prostrated Shi Wan. (Don't worry, the arrows are blunted.)

Shi Hoo notices the arrows and remembers that Iljimae told him he never kills people.

The hunter's son is hilarious. He is bait for the kitchen guards, who are then tied up and stored somewhere in the kitchens - he kicks at the entangled guards while apologizing. Wow. And he has furry boots to rival the people over at UGG.

Mafia dude, the hunter's son and Yong look at the bounty that is the royal kitchens and decide to make a move. They are almost caught, but Iljimae comes through in time. It's the hunter's son who proves useful again.

They take everything away on a cart, Yong walking around in his Iljimae costume in broad daylight, oh good, he changes. (Let's concede for the sake of argument that there aren't that many guards posted inside the palace proper, but you'd think they'd have noticed a big black shadow flitting here and there between buildings. Sheesh. This show gets no points for realism.)

Yong realizes that whoever's after him is in the palace after recognizing assassin number two.

Apples start falling from their supply cart, and as Yong picks one up, the king comes up to the apple. He leaves, but comes back, as he feels that Yong's face is familiar. Uh oh.

End episode.

Commentary/Rambling:

- So many things to resolve, but one episode left! Don't worry, it's not a super sad ending. It's almost the Iljichae, but not quite. If I had to compare it, I would say, the writers have definitely been watching TODAW.

- Recap as soon as csubs come out!

Love,
