Here's a funny video for all you Star Trek fans out here. After watching Star Trek episodes for days, I found a clip of Spock using something in the Transporter Room that looked like a turntable. I couldn't help but make this...

I didn't think it was possible, but Obama has managed it: He makes Hillary Clinton look good. He even makes McCain look good. Maybe the guy is a unifier after all.

A quick search of the Blogoshpere -- But aren't all such searches quick? -- reveals that lots of fine minds have already noted a resemblance between Barack and Mr. Spock. I don't know. There is a resemblance, but not between the logical Vulcan First Officer and Barack the Empath. It's between the fans of each fictional character.

The misfits who worship Spock see in him a transformation of all their social inadequacy into a cool self-possession. They're not tongue-tied; they're laconic. They're not bashful; they're reserved. He embodies their misty dreams of a Better Future Universe in which their nerdiness has inverted into sophistication. Obama's groupies, similarly, are not cheering him personally so much as seeing in him a man-shaped incarnation of their vague vision of a world in which they aren't nuts.

Well, live long and prosper, kids, but I wonder if the DNC will realize before the month is out that what they've put on is a Star Trek Convention?

As I sit in the terminal at Charlotte airport on the last leg of our journey home from the Las Vegas Star Trek Convention, I am thinking back to something Spock said.

Leonard Nimoy was amazing as usual. His antecdotes were funny, and his memories were touching. However, someone asked him a very important question while he was on stage.

The fan stood at the microphone and asked: "Mr. Nimoy, I want to be a photographer. What advice do you have for me?"

Nimoy, an accomplished photographer himself, answered, "You do whatever it takes. Do what you love, do it often, and dont worry about getting paid for it. Just find a way to do it."

Wow.

That translates into anything, doesn't it?

And, as our book, "The Artifact: An Anthology" is headed off to the publisher, those words ring more true than ever.

"Find a way to do it."

"Do what you love."

Isn't that what it's all about? And, I'll tell you this much...it's exactly what fueled this project by nine strangers with a common love...writing.

And, I'll tell you something else.

We love writing, and we loved this project, so much, we're gonna keep doing it.

I promise.

What do you love?

Many blogs have commented on this, but since I've been posting about space hippies since the early days of this blog, I couldn't let this go unremarked upon.

George Bush had his three-fingered W salute that supporters flashed when greeting him at presidential campaign events in 2000. And now, if a Los Angeles creative agency gets its way, Sen. Barack Obama will see fans meet him with his own salute like the one above. "Our goal is to see a crowd of 75,000 people at Obama's nomination speech holding their hands above their heads, fingers laced together in support of a new direction for this country, a renewed hope, and acceptance of responsibility for our future," says Rick Husong, owner of The Loyalty Inc.

* * *

"You interlace your hands in a circle, the interlacing being a symbol of different types of people coming together and the circle a symbol of unity," he says.

It looks like this:

From Wikipedia:

The group is impressed by Mr. Spock however, who gestures with an oval "symbol of peace" the party makes with raised hands, and speaks of "The One."

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="260" caption="One"][/caption]

I hope this catches on. The sight of tens of thousands of enraptured activists making the space hippie sign at Invesco Field while Barack Obama is giving his acceptance speech would be so awesome I might explode.

Did you know that there are lyrics to the Star Trek theme? Gene Roddenberry wrote them so he could collect performance royalties on the song--they were never intended to be sung and I don't think anyone's ever recorded a version with his lyrics. The story is here.

Next time an episode of the original series comes on television, you will now be able to sing along:

Beyond
The rim of the star-light
My love
Is wand'ring in star-flight
I know
He'll find in star-clustered reaches
Love,
Strange love a star woman teaches.
I know
His journey ends never
His star trek
Will go on forever.
But tell him
While he wanders his starry sea
Remember, remember me.

Nichelle Nichols actually did record a vocal for the Star Trek theme, in a disco version. Her lyrics are different from Roddenberry's, though.

"Audaciosamente indo onde nenhum homem jamais esteve".

Comparisons have been made to Star Trek over the years, and though each show is very different many of the major qualities are the same. Both have maintained a longevity, if not in their original series in the universe of their creation with spin-offs and feature films. No other shows in the science fiction genre have managed this kind of success, and while Star Trek began to dwindle towards the mid-90's Stargate began it's reign in that time. Each show maintains themselves on a predominantly superficial level, making the shows fun and light hearted, but each have survived so long because of excellent writers, scripts, and amazingly charismatic casts. All of the fundementals for great Sci-Fi.

I'm just glad to see Stargate live on fervently at this point and not just through legacy. It obviously has a lot more fun to offer and many of us junkies waiting for whatever new piece of fun we can get our hands on.

Leonard Nimoy’s latest photographic project makes the actor an unexpected name among the celebrities celebrating the fuller-bodied woman.

The Star Trek actor has published a book called the Full Body Project, featuring his photos of members of San Francisco’s Fat Bottom Review group. The book grew out of Nimoy’s photographs of obese women, which have been exhibited in galleries across the US.

Queen Latifah endorses the Jenny Craig diet, but simply stresses the value of being “a size healthier”. Jennifer Love Hewitt has begun working with girls about self-image after ugly media attacks on her weight. But what made Nimoy explore the new world of over-size beauty?

A large woman approached Nimoy about his photographs, citing that there were no women who looked like her in his work. In an interview with NPR, Nimoy admits his first full figure shoot made him uncomfortable. He began to understand that his reaction was a reflection of this culture’s perpective of body type.

Nimoy says, “It led me to a new consciousness about the fact that so many people live in body types that are not the type that’s being sold by fashion models.”

The makings of my favorite Columbo episode.

I don't know which is more difficult to wrap my brain around; Spock as a cold blooded murderer, or Grandpa as a cardiac surgeon. The Man About the Place and I, avid Twilight Zone fans, enjoyed seeing Anne "Marcia" Francis in this episode too.

This was a brilliantly executed episode. Leonard Nimoy plays Dr. Mayfield, a menacingly enthusiastic cardiac surgeon who is just dying to get a new transplant resistance drug out of the lab and into people, but is hindered by his cautious partner, lovable and grumpy Dr. Hidemann, (Will Geer) who wants to test the drug longer. Fortunately for Mayfield, Hidemann has a serious heart condition which requires surgery. Unfortunately for Hidemann, Mayfield will be the surgeon.

Fortunately for Hidemann, his nurse (Anne Francis) notices that Mayfield used disolvable stitches when stitching up the good doctor - meaning that the stitches will dissolve around that new heart valve, causing his death which will not seem suspicious at all. Unfortunately for the nurse, Mayfield needs to get rid of her for this knowledge.

Will Columbo figure it out in time to save Hidemann? Will Columbo get the goods on Mayfield?

Of course he gets his man - Columbo always gets the bad guy in the end. What I enjoyed about this episode

[caption id="attachment_120" align="alignright" width="200" caption="Columbo Loses His Cool"][/caption]

was the great chemistry between Peter Falk and the cast. Nimoy's Mayfield is so arrogant and cocky - and Columbo becomes furious and gives us a rare display of his frustration and anger with the murderer. Usually calm and collected, Columbo violently slams a statue on the desk and startles Mayfield in such a way that it made me laugh out loud. (view Columbo/Nimoy clip here!) He rarely confronts his killers with such a 'tude!

I love Columbo - I love Peter Falk. I love this episode; in fact, I think I'll re-watch it tonight!

Our second term began yesterday, with an introduction to teeline shorthand by Fay Harrison, our shor

Our second term began yesterday, with an introduction to teeline shorthand by Fay Harrison, our shorthand tutor. She seems to be a really good teacher.

I think it will be pretty useful, especially in covering myself in any arising lawsuits (touch wood) and will be really fast once I master it, but at this stage I think we all feel like 5 year olds learning to write on the first day of school. Practice makes perfect I guess.

I hope the media employers out there recognise and reward our efforts to become well-rounded and flexible journalists.

Paul Bradshaw opened up an interesting debate in which Jim has commented on whether J students should be trained for an industry which at this stage looks like it may not want us.

Papers are in decline and the Internet is on the rise. Many major papers are cutting jobs as the industry responds to the market shift. The rivers of gold were diverted through the TradeMe dam, and Fairfax bought them out. They recognised that on-line classifieds were becoming increasingly competitive to their market share. But advertising aside the shift to the net will include all kinds of changes.

I personally feel that net journalism is the way of the future, but that's not to say that newspapers will end up in museums. I believe community newspapers are doing quite well. I think as technology decreases in price, gets smaller and more readily available it may simply be easier to get the news on your phone or computer using the net. And it will probably be a matter of time before most stories go from research to final copy using nothing but a handset.

Internet journalism is by far the most comprehensive form of reporting. It can combine audio, video, diagrams and charts, links to relevant articles and resources, with the full copy you expect. There are few space constraints. It can be updated. It can even record the readers opinions or comments on the matter to be shared. It's fast, interactive, and available anywhere there is Internet access.

But I think we must be flexible and well-rounded, rolling all the other main skills into one. The internet will not be the only medium for delivery. This will surely guarantee us a very high rate of job placement.

From what I can see these are the skills we should have from print and broadcast:

Research, photography, video recording, shorthand, interviewing, writing, subbing, audio recording, good inter-personal skills, broadcasting.

These should be combined with the online journalism prerequisites like a good understanding of computers and data such as file types, conversion, image re-touching and resizing, infrared/wireless/flash/sd data transfer, html and the internet, digital resources like youtube, soundslides, blogs, del.icio.us, seesmic, social networks, twitter and all the rest.

The basic tenets, of course, will remain: accuracy, ethics, impartiality, meeting deadlines.

Future journos should be able to compile pages to submit to editors, not just documents with a picture, and within an hour it would be checked and live on the site. They might include a slideshow, hyperlinks on key words to related articles and resources, sound bytes of an interview, whichever medium was required to tell the story best. And they may have all the technology to do so built into one handset.

[caption id="attachment_87" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Spock with a tricorder. Looks advanced."][/caption]

I think it's an exciting prospect. Technology is improving rapidly. If you've ever seen an episode of Star Trek (I only watched a few I swear) you may remember the Tricorder. There was like a medical one, one for scouting around and an engineering one.

I'm thinking J-corders may be closer than we all imagine. 5 years? 10? Since the first generation cell phones began in Japan in 1979 we sure have come a long way. We have turned these "phones" into MFDs (multi function devices) which are advancing exponentially in a competitive market.

Our school had the fortune of being outfitted with Nokia N95's, and they're pretty nice. I didn't buy one personally, I couldn't justify it considering I already have a decent phone and digital camera, but I see them being used to create some excellent work within my class. The 5mp camera is good quality and it is reasonably quick and easy to use, and integrates well with other technology.

I feel like i'm in pretty safe hands and that what we take away from Whitireia, such as experience in publishing to NewsWire.co.nz, will ensure our employment, so long as we step up to the new challenges and master the basics. I think news outlets want flexible, technology minded, multi-talented and motivated reporters.

I know I would.

ADULTS WARNING: RANT TO FOLLOW...

Grown-up cell conversations. What gives? Actual (partial) conversation, and eavesdropping is not required - it's out there, for everybody to hear:

Hey, you!

Hey.

Whatcha doin'?

Nothin'. Whatchoo doin', dawg?

Nothin'. Getting ready to text you.

Really? Cool! Me too!

Me too, what?

You know, text you.

Oh, OK, Cool! Where are you?

At the gym. Where are you?

Really? Me too! Where? I don't see you.

PAUSE FOR THIS BRIEF COMMERCIAL MESSAGE:

Honestly, people, lose the cell phone and get a life! Making matters worse are these new, no-thought, State laws requiring your hands to be free while driving, ostensibly for more important permissible things like texting and sucking on a venti sextipple shot soy frappacino vanilla mocha latte with whipped. Want a stock tip? Bluetooth and/or Starbucks, their lobbyists are in every Statehouse in the United States. As if that's not enough, they've gone global, bending the ears of the European Union, now acquiescing to cell phone rapping on planes over European air space. Even Europeans were against that move, by 85% in a published poll! The only saving grace is that "quiet time" is during take-off and landing, so enjoy your nap, I guess.

I never would have believed that hearing aids would become a fashion accessory, but dang if everybody hasn't got one growing out of their ear canal. And what's with the flashing light? State trooper-blue seems to be the color of choice, a bonus thrown in by Bluetooth to either ward off mosquitoes or alert low flying crop dusters. However, if you see somebody rapping and the light is not on, there is no incoming voice, so move quickly to the other side of the street. These people are potentially dangerous, as only the seriously deranged talk to themselves.

I used to feel sorry for my Grandparents when their hearing left and it was wear a device or just nod, smile and fake believe they were following the conversation. Old age self-consciousness took over for the longest time, and hearing aids got so tiny folks were actually losing them in their ears. Not anymore - the bigger, and gaudier, the better!

OK, I'm done. Enough. I'll hang up now.
