ERS has trebled in size in terms of the internal team of highly experienced specialists and consultants, and also in the Client base of industry leading firms, reflected by turnover doubling, thereby bucking the credit crunch/recessionary trend. The Management remain suitably conservative, prudent and cautious, ensuring that ERS’s growth is organic, consistent and sustained.

Simon Turner, a Senior Consultant for ERS, attributes much of this tangible success to ERS’s deliberate focus on the niche Atomic Power and Nuclear Energy Recruitment specialisations, combined with the strong effort-brings-reward culture and results driven ethos within the ever expanding highly motivated, pro-active and hand picked team at ERS, selected for the professionalism and commitment to excellence.

In addition, Simon attributes much of the success of the firm to the considerable volume of referrals from successfully placed Candidates and very satisfied past and present Clients. In response to this fact, and to acknowledge the value of such referrals from Clients, Candidates and indeed other sources, ERS have introduced a formal referral reward scheme for quality referrals resulting in successfully placed Candidates with new or existing Clients, or for the introduction of an instructing Client on receipt of placement fees for a successful Candidate engagement on contract or permanent basis.

Whilst this is predominantly a tangible ‘thank you’ gesture to acknowledge the value of quality referrals to a growing business in a niche market, the opportunity has been enthusiastically grasped, with rewards ranging from £50 to £500 in value being distributed.

Let's face it, Apple Stores are dead sexy.

The aesthetics, layout, and even the employees of retail Apple Stores really make for a quality experience. Personally, I have yet to have a bad experience with an Apple Retail Store or the Apple Online Store. As soon as you enter one of these stores, you’re welcomed with a smiling face. Yes, maybe that smiling face is hiding a very hungover employee, but it feels nonetheless genuine. Every Apple Store I've visited has always been well-staffed. There’s always a person to ask if you need assistance, even at the busiest times of day. Apple truly has every facet of consumer need filled with a special position.

The aforementioned greeter is what Apple calls Concierge. Apple describes Concierge as, “The warm welcome comes to life. Be the first person our customer meets—that sets the tone for the revolutionary shopping experience only Apple can give,” and boy do they have that shopping experience right.

The other type of employee is the specialist. They’re the people who ask if you need help and are always there to fill your needs. If you really need one-to-one help with shopping, you can set an appointment for a Personal Shopping Specialist. This is a true, face-to-face shopping experience. With a Personal Shopping Specialist you don’t have to fight for attention (not that you do at an Apple Store) and don’t feel rushed to make purchases. I’ve had a shopping specialist help me and a friend with an iMac purchase. Never before have we felt so at-ease about a product and not feel buyer-remorse. You have to remember that it is incredibly easy in the retail world to emulate a used car salesman; at the Apple store, there are no cheesy sales pitches or coerced purchases.

One of the most prominent areas (the focus, actually) of the Apple Retail Store, is the Genius Bar. This is what sets Apple apart from the rest of the computer-service chains. The Genius Bar is available to any Apple customer, whether the product is under warranty or not, for troubleshooting of any Apple Product. Appointment-based, the Genius Bar really is an experience in itself. Coming from a world where you build your own PC and have respective warranties for each product, it was mind-blowing to know I could take my Mac to the Genius Bar and get every derivative of it inspected and repaired at one place. There are times when your hardware needs to be shipped off, but most of the time it’s fixed on the spot. Each Genius is fully trained and knows all of the nooks and crannies of a Mac and OS X.

The second component of the Apple Store experience is the Apple Online Store. Here you can get the same experience at a normal Apple Retail Store with the added convenience of sitting at home. The design of the website is very streamlined and it is incredibly easy to find any product. Most, if not all, products in the Apple Online Store have zoomed-in views and Apple/Customer product reviews all in one page. Not only is the shopping experience easy; the checkout procedure is fast and painless.

All of these components of Apple Retail make it really hard not to purchase an Apple product.

Walk in to any job interview, casual gathering or networking event and one of the first questions th

Walk in to any job interview, casual gathering or networking event and one of the first questions that will be asked of you is: "What's your specialty?" I think this is a terrible question. Don't get me wrong, I think having something you're really great at is a good thing, but why stop there? Why be satisfied with being a great salesperson and a decent couch potato? To me, a much better question would be "What are some of the things you do best?" which should be followed immediately with "What do you hope to learn how to do soon?" These days, us Americans set the bar much too low. We need to start striving to learn new skills, especially those useful to building up the bonds of family and community as well as those to ward off tyranny and ignorance. I'm not talking about 'resume builders' here, I'm talking about hard-core skills that generations before us took for granted. Below is an excellent and famous quote that describes what I'm talking about:

A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.

-Robert A. Heinlein

This is a great quote because it inspires each of us to continue to learn throughout life and to never be satisfied with our current skill set. Building a broad range of skills throughout life is useful not only for you but it positively impacts those around you. Perhaps we could even build a new definition of 'job security' here. In fact, why don't we throw out the idea of 'job security' (which implies that one must always strive to be impressive at one thing to avoid being laid off) and replace it with an idea of 'multicompetency' which would make an individual employable in many settings. Below is the New Oxford American Dictionary entry for generalist:

generalist |ˈjenərəlist|

noun
a person competent in several different fields or activities : with a generalist's education and some specific skills.
adjective ||
able to carry out a range of activities, or adapt to different situations : a generalist doctor.

While it is true that generalists may be more confident in the job market and better members of their communities and families, I feel like the most important skills of all are those that are useful in defending freedom. This includes being able to run for office, campaign, petition, sue the government, protest, speak out, fire a rifle, vote and everything else that makes a true patriot. We need more people like this in these trying times if we don't want to loose this country to the New World Order once and for all.

Perhaps in a future post I can write about some of the things I know how to do and some of the things that I would like to learn how to do, but for now I will leave my argument unfinished. How do you feel about striving to be a generalist? Do any of you feel like you can do more things well than most people? I sure know that since I stopped watching TV I've started having a lot more time to learn more about the world. I have even learned some great skills along the way.

In conclusion, I understand that generalists can't be good at everything, just many things at once. A few of the things that they should not be competent in are:

Blindly waving flags

Trusting the words of politicians over their voting record

Watching TV

Reading their history textbooks in high school

Engaging in the false left-right paradigm

Drinking fluoridated water

Having any knowledge whatsoever of Sitcoms or Reality TV shows

An especially special friend of mine spoke with me about the uselessness of primary care physicians.

An especially special friend of mine spoke with me about the uselessness of primary care physicians. And almost had me, but something came to mind when I read an article in the July 2, 2008 edition of the JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) by Dr. Michael Stillman. My friend presented me with the idea that general care physicians are not always very knowledgable about ailments or certain health problems that specialists would know. I had a personal experience that comes under this category. However, when the patient of a primary care physician is ill or injured, the primary care physician will know the patient well. One of the most important aspects of health care that is commonly overlooked is knowing the patient. Often such luxury is not possible with the busy schedule of doctors, or the lack of need to see certain doctors. Nonetheless, it can influence care dramatically. Dr. Stillman gave an example in his article where the medications of a patient had been changed to a more expensive regimen without his knowledge. The prescribing doctor would not have know that the patient could never afford those medications, but Dr. Stillman knew and prescribed the original, less-costly, and equally effective regimen. A number of other issues come up as well when identifying the importance of primary care physicians. When making an important medical decision, trust between a patient and the doctor becomes essential. Patients, even if are under the care of a specialist may want to consult a phyiscian with whom they are familiar before making an important decision. Primary Care doctors may not necessarily save lifes, but they can certian help people maintain the highest quality of life possible. So with the greatest level of respect possible, I disagree with my friend [I will convince her I am right, and if she happens to read this before I try the art of persuasion...] (citation: JAMA July 2, 2008 p.21-22).
