A nursing mom was told to go to the bathroom or cover up at Westgate Mall.  Read the story.  What the news didn't mention was that the security guard called the police who actually made the grandmother go to the car to get the mom's driver's license so they could file a report!!  Did the police not even understand the law?  The mom was carrying the DHEC card explaining her legal right to nurse in public but the guard refused to look at it.  What an odd world in which we live--moms carrying cards identifying their right to feed their babies. 

I love how the newspaper article ends by saying the mall offers family rooms for nursing.  Who cares?  The mom can nurse wherever she pleases.  And, as usual, the newspaper is hosting a web poll asking if you are offended by a nursing mom.  Again, who cares?  It doesn't matter who is offended.  She is protected by the law.

"The ripples from a worldwide trend have reached our city. The Episcopal Church, the American branch of the worldwide Anglican Communion, is in the midst of turmoil over its view of homosexuality. This is causing difficulties for Dr. Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury, who is struggling to sustain unity in his denomination. This turmoil has intensified since Gene Robinson, who is openly living in a homosexual relationship, was consecrated as Bishop in 2003. Many churches, including an Episcopal church in Spartanburg, SC, have been devastated by this situation.

Spartanburg's St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, led by Father George Gray, made the decision to maintain a conservative position regarding homosexuality and the Bible. They have stated that the Bible names homosexuality as sinful behavior from which a person can be redeemed and healed. St. Christopher's has been the only Episcopal church that supported Truth Ministry, a Spartanburg-based, Christian ministry offering counsel and support for those affected by unwanted homosexuality. Since the Episcopal denomination in large part is continuing to move toward a more liberal view, St. Christopher's church provided an option for its members to withhold their regular payments to the Episcopal Church.

Because of this stance, the church property was seized by the Episcopal Bishop and the Diocese of Upper South Carolina, and Father George was dismissed as rector. Immediately, about 150 church members joined him in starting a house church which has been meeting for about three weeks. Beginning Sunday, June 1, the group will meet at the Chapman Cultural Center in Spartanburg. On that morning, Anglican Bishop T. J. Johnston will attend the 10 o'clock service to affirm their stance and to bless their new formation as All Saints Church.

The world is looking to the American church for leadership in this crucial time, but the American church is quickly leaving its spiritual roots. The Episcopal Church is only one of many who are struggling with rewriting policies regarding homosexuality and, in some cases, attempting to rewrite the Bible itself. At Truth Ministry, we applaud Father George Gray and the new members of All Saints Church for proclaiming the truth from God's word that freedom from homosexuality is possible."

After all, his hometown paper potentially ended the twisted love affair they shared when it finally turned on him (Here, Here, Here, and Here) for selling campaign services to Spartanburg County primary election candidates out of the party headquarters where he located his office after leaving the family business.

NOTE: Rick, you should have known that it would eventually happen. Maureen Dowd said it best. “Wooing the press is an exercise roughly akin to picnicking with a tiger. You might enjoy the meal, but the tiger always eats last.”

South Carolina's blogs have been on the offensive, too. FITSNews hit him twice (Here and Here). Palmetto Scoop presented this piece and this piece. I even disagreed with his practices here recently.

Rick made a mistake. He knows it and was a big enough man to voluntarily quit peddling his services until Sunday when his party leadership gave him permission to restart his enterprise on a limited basis.

I disagree with the Spartanburg County party's decision, but I'm not going to criticize them over what many view as an overwhelming appearance of impropriety and conflict.

What I will do is applaud Rick Beltram.

He took a free tool like Voter Vault and was able to charge candidates to organize the data and provide printouts of the information.

He actually figured out a way to take a database tool that is worth every penny of what the party normally charges and get $10 American for every precinct.

The secret is that Voter Vault is a mess. It's not updated. It's outdated. It's inaccurate. It's also a lot of other synonyms that aren't really coming to mind right now.

In the end it costs the candidates and campaigns that use it.

Candidates base large parts of their communications/messaging strategies on what is a great offering in concept. Unfortunately, Voter Vault's records are fraught with dead voters (literally, not some metaphorical political term), wrong contacts, and voters who moved. It isn't updated frequently enough to add new voters, it hates any browser other than Internet Explorer, and it's also so compromised that Mrs. Charles seems to be the only person without login information. Doesn't that sound like a great tool?

It's a great idea, but it has too many errors to be of real value. Until the RNC pays attention and elevates Voter Vault to what it should be in concept, I congratulate anyone who can make money off of it.

Of course whether or not the RNC shares my appreciation is a different story, altogether.

Morgan Square in Spartanburg is the place of the original courthouse village, which was established in the 1780s. The place of the first courthouse and jail near a spring eventually became a square which was named after Daniel Morgan, the general who commanded the American forces at the Battle of Cowpens.
In 1880 a opera house with a clock tower was built at Morgan Square. Many Spartanburg's music events were held between 1880-1906 in the Opera House, which could seat 800 people. In addition Spartanburg's city hall occupied the first floor of the Opera House. The Opera House and clock tower was torn down in 1907.
The statue of Daniel Morgan was placed on the square in spring of 1881 to mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Cowpens. The courthouse, shops and the Merchant's Hotel, later known as Spartan Inn bordered Morgan Square.
Trues Department store opened in 1905 and operated the first elevator in Spartanburg. The oldest existing buildings still standing on the square today date to the 1880s. During the 1960's suburban shopping centers drew shoppers away from traditional downtown stores, or hotels. The center of downtown and Morgan Square declined. Within the last decade Spartanburg's downtown district has been revitalized and Morgan Square remodeled. A number of historic structures have been restored and several businesses and company headquarters relocated to Morgan Square and downtown Spartanburg. Morgan Square is now again the city's primary downtown hub and a thriving center for daytime commerce and vibrant nightlife.
