It is with sadness that i tell you, that today is the day that it was announced that the Professor Randy Pausch has died. He has made a huge impact on people all around the world with what was called "The Last Lecture". He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and made an effort to spread the legacy of living your life to the fullest...living out your dreams...living with integrity...living with truth.

He was a son, a father, a husband and an educator; he was trying to teach us the meaning of life. I think it is amazing that he gave us the gift of sacrifice...the very valuable thing that he had left to give to anyone was time...he chose it to spread his message to the world. Will you hear it, will you absorb what he had to say or will you reject the very thing that he found so important that he sacrificed time away from his family and friends to make sure that we all heard it? He has three young sons and a wife and so much more that he could have cocooned himself with until he had no more time... they generously chose to enlighten us.

His message is important. It is uplifting; but, also cautionary...none of us have any guarantee of tomorrow...we must make the most of what we are given. You can see part of an interview that Diane Sawyer did with Randy Pausch here: http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/LastLecture/ The interview gives an amazing insight into the man with a message who lived so joyfully; and, who presented his message with humor and style hoping to touch lives in a meaningful way. Thank you Randy...and your family and friends for sharing it with us! See related story: http://writeasrain.wordpress.com/2008/04/29/295/

[caption id="attachment_744" align="alignleft" width="160" caption="Thanks again to Kim at Daily Blessings for hosting this six-week challenge to recognize the blessings we enjoy throughout our week. We are supposed to be on week four, but I'm still lagging behind."][/caption]

After my last couple of posts, I needed to give thanks for some good things. This week was a week of wonderful surprises, and the best one was this little darlin.' Let me introduce you to Sophia Renee, born July 22 at 10:37 p.m. (She was about three weeks early, but is just perfect.)

Her mom, a new friend of mine, is a bubbly bundle of a spirit-filled woman. I have known very few people in my life with a faith as strong as hers. Sophie joins her mom and two big sisters in a home full of love and happiness.

I told you last week that my men folk were off at a men's only weekend adventure. Well, the boy came through big time. I had fully expected to only get a cursory photo of the person I requested and it being only a blurred shot of Patrick 'Dr. McDreamy' Dempsey whizzing by at over 100 mph. But, instead WK surprised me with this one ~ a full-on face shot, grill glinting and all.

I was also surprised by this generous gift from my bloggy pal Beany, at So Grateful to be Mormon. Beany, or Kathleen as some of you might know her, was one of my very first blog pals. She is also the only one I have spoken on the phone with, all the way from Alaska. Can't get much further away than that from Florida and still be in the U.S. Thank you, you are a sweetie.

After nearly two whole weeks of watching what I stuffed into my face, I was also surprised to find that not only had I lost a fair amount of weight (which Hubs said he noticed), but I was also able to return those two monstrosities that made me cry, and bought instead two new dresses, in smaller sizes thankyouverymuch! I'm blessed that my very good friend is getting married this weekend to wonderful man who so obviously loves her and her sons. It's like a modern-day fairytale, and I get to be a witness to their happiness. As vain as it sounds, I will be able to enjoy that day so much more when I'm not kvetching over having to wear something I was not at all happy about.

(As a side note... not so much a blessing, except for those bloggers who were getting tired of my WWII fly-girl avi, I want to introduce my newest avatar. For the story behind why I picked this one, go here. I'm probably missing one or two, but these were the ones I used most often. )

If you click on that you'll find a lovely Google map of Florida ~ where this blog originates ~ along with a couple of local photos. You'll also find that I am totally stealing Ashley's idea of finding out where my visitors live. Please sign in on 'You Are Here' page, leaving a comment about who you are and where you're home is. It would be a great blessing to me to see how far you all come to visit 'little ol' me.' I would add one of those cool map thingys that do this for me automatically, but I am on Wordpress, therefore widget disadvantaged.)

During the Encampment on Friday night, we conducted a ceremony during which we lit two bonfires with flaming arrows (we have to work on the flaming arrow part) in remembrance of Thom and Marc and promised never to let them go out. On Saturday night we revealed the work that we friars had been doing over the past week: three shields, one for the Knights of Lepanto (pictured above), one for Thom and one for Marc.

I am no herald, but I have done some private research on heraldry, so if anyone reads this blog who has suggestions or corrections, I am completely open to them. For an explanation of the arms of the Knights of Lepanto see this post.

By the way, for anyone who cares to help me out with my heraldry, the blazoning of the arms of the Knights of Lepanto I render thus: Per fess azure and argent, a fleur de lis counterchanged between two fleur de lis argent and a cross formy gules dexter, a fleur de lis azure sinister. That is just a guess. I really don't know what I am doing. I concur with Chesterton: "Anything worth doing is worth doing badly."

My intention is to bestow full knighthood in an official capacity upon both Thom and Marc posthumously. Both of them were in formation for knighthood; however, we have had no formal investitutures or doubings yet in the organization. Even so, it seems that the two of them providentially entered the order of knighthood during the last encampment.

In any case, I wanted to bestow upon Thom and Marc the arms of their knighthood, so the first thing I did is find the arms for the French Girard family which as it turns out is three gold trefoils on a blue field. Blazoned that would be, I think, azure three trefoils or. My second concern was how I would distinguish their arms from each other's. There is a heraldic way of showing that the bearer of arms is a son, but I thought I might do it in a different way by giving each of their arms a distinctive honorary augmentation.

My line of thinking on their deservingness for this honor is as follows. Thom was the brains and the spirit behind the Encampments, and by universal acclaim among the knights he became the first Encampment Grand Marshal. As I talk more and more to various knights I am amazed to just how deeply Thom had assimiliated the Spirit of Lepanto.

Marc, as I have said before, was his father's son and a hero. What more needs to be said?

So on Saturday night, before I had the boys recite the oath, we presented the shield of Lepanto to Mr. Dietz, the new Grand Marshal of the Encampments, the shield of Sir Thom to his son Adam, and the shield of Sir Marc to his brother Lucas.

Master Paul recieving the Lepanto shield from Brother Giuseppe to present to Mr. Dietz.

Mr. Casey placing Sir Thom's shield on the tower after having recieved it from Adam.

Lucas holding the shield of Sir Marc.

Friar honor guard for the three shields.

Sir Thom's Shield

I am not going to try to express the proper blazoning of these arms, suffice it to say that the arms of the Girard family (three gold trefoils on a blue field) have been quartered with the arms of the Knights of Lepanto. Quartering usually indicated a marriage, but sometimes it was used to augment the arms of a knight because of some noble deed. In such cases a king or barron might quarter the arms of the knight with his own arms. Thom, as the first Grand Marshal and because of his complete commitment to what the Knights of Lepanto are about has earned the right to have his arms quartered with that of the Knights of Lepanto.

Sir Marc's Shield

I guess that Marc's shield would be properly blazoned thus: azure, a horse argent and three trefoils or. What I have done is take the Girard arms and augment them with a white horse. In the organization of the Knights of Lepanto I have envisioned establishing an honorary council of anyone who has held a high place of responsibility or who by some deed of honor has established his precedence. I planned to call it The Council of the White Horse, in remembrance of King Alfred the Great and his victory over the Danes, which Chesterton immortalized in his epic poem The Ballad of the White Horse.

Defender of the faith as he was, Chesterton saw in the epic history and legend of King Alfred a testimony of God's love for England, and was moved by his Catholic sensibilities to assimilate the story in a mode that produced a work that was not only chivalric, but also spiritually moving. The motif of the White Horse was used in connection with a geological formation on a hill in Berkshire. From ancient times a 374 foot long figure of a horse had been cut out of the side of White Horse Hill. The turf was dug out, exposing the white subsoil below, so that the figure of the white horse could be seen against a green grass background. According to the legend accepted by Chesterton, the Vale of the White Horse in Berkshire was the location of the Battle of Ethandune. In the mind of Chesterton, and in the text of the ballad, the white horse signifies the presence of Christendom. When Christians are in control of Wessex they tend the white horse and regularly cut the grass back to preserve the figure; when the Danes are in control of Wessex the figure is grown over. The ballad ends with the restoration of Christendom in Wessex, the establishment of the English Kingdom and the scouring of the horse (Book VIII).

While Thom by virtue of his being the first Grand Marshal is also to be considered a member of the Council of the White Horse, Marc, by virtue of his heroic death is to be considered the founding member.

On Sunday morning just before Holy Mass, we had two candles lit from each bonfire and had them carried into the Church by Carol and Jacquiline Girard. Thom's Sheild was carried by Adam Girard, and Marc's by Lucas Girard. The Knights have pledged never to let either of those two fires to be extinguished. May their gesture, be translated into their own heroic deeds.

Braveheart is one of my favorite movies. Mel Gibson was on a great run there for awhile. It is a movie about the value and price for freedom, and it is a stirring film (historical inaccuracies aside).

But what is often missed is the important roles fathers (and father figures) play in the lives of the characters. It may come across to some as simplistic but the men with the bravest hearts were raised by brave men. The cowardly, self-serving men were raised by overbearing, abusive fathers. Fathers play an important role in shaping the lives of sons into young men. That role can't be overstated.

So let's take some peeks into this story and see the impact of fathers on sons.

Braveheart opens with a young William Wallace watching his father, Malcolm, preparing to go into battle. His older brother is also joining his father.

William: I'm going with you?

Malcolm: A good help ye be too.

William: I can fight.

Malcolm: I know you can fight. (pause) But it's our wits that make us men.

His father does not mock him, but affirms him. But in the process teaches him that there is more to being a man than fighting. And more to fighting than mere strength and skill. William must still learn to use his wits to be a man. It appears as though he has the right father to teach him, but tragedy strikes. I wonder if it was this broken heart that made him so pliable.

Into this void steps his Uncle Argylle. He isn't quite sure about Argylle at first, but soon learns that he is in good hands.

"You don't speak Latin? Well, that's something we'll have to remedy, isn't it?"

His uncle does not belittle him, but sees this as an indication that young William can and will learn. Together they will address this lack of knowledge. William is not alone, but his uncle will stand with him and teach him what he lacks.

"It was the same for me and your father when our daddy died. First learn to use this (points to his head), then I'll teach you how to use this."

Uncle Argylle is one who has trod the path that lies before William. He and his brother lost their father. He puts the priority on using his head so that he will not only use his weapons skillfully but wisely.

But Malcom does not disappear from the film. He shows up in a dream to offer direction to his son.

"Your heart is free; have the courage to follow it."

Perhaps a tad bit Pelagian there, but often we don't accomplish anything because we are afraid. We can easily become trapped within our fears. Though Scotland was in bondage to England, the King could not enslave William's heart unless William allowed him to. If he was to become free of the tyranny of England, he would have to possess a braveheart.

Edward Longshanks is the polar opposite of Malcolm and Argylle. He does not nurture his son and call him to courage in pursuing his dreams. He continually degrades his son, and forces his legacy upon him.

"One day you will be a king. At least try to act like one."

William's friend Hamish also has a "good enough" father. He doesn't seem like the brightest bulb in the pack. He lacks the wisdom of Malcolm and Argylle. But he loves his son- and communicates it. During the rock throwing contest he is there encouraging Hamish. Later in the story they would fight side-by-side. Hamish was a good friend, and a courageous man because of the steady influence of his father. After his father is mortally wounded in battle, Hamish is broken hearted. They had a loving relationship such that they enjoyed one another's presence.

"I've lived long enough to live free, proud to see you become the man you are. I'm a happy man."

There is a counterpart of Hamish as well. Robert the Bruce. I've been to the cathedral in Dunfermlin where he's buried. He has ambitions for Robert, and is involved in manipulating things behind the scenes. He is the master of the double cross. He has no courage, only self-interest. He grasps for power, not freedom. He explains his betrayal of Wallace to Robert.

"Uncompromising men are easy to admire. He has courage. So does a dog. But it is exactly the ability to compromise that makes a man noble."

But William engages in combat for the very soul of Robert the Bruce. He seeks to call forth the better parts of Robert, to call him out of self-interest and duplicity. He sees that Robert could be a greater man than his father wants him to be.

"The people know you and respect you. ... If you would just lead the people they would follow you, and so would I. You are the rightful leader. There is strength in you, I can see it."

William is not defending his position as leader of the rebellion against England. He would willingly step aside if Robert would lead. For Wallace it was not about him, but Scotland. Taking a page from his father and uncle, he affirms even as he challenges.

But the Bruce will not go down quietly. One last double cross results in Wallace being delivered into the hands of England to be killed. (It was also fascinating to stand on the very spot on which he was condemned in the old Parliament building in London.) Robert is no longer torn between his father and Wallace. His father won the battle, but lost the war.

"All men betray! All lose heart!

"I don't want to lose heart! I want to believe as he does. I'll never be on the wrong side again. You're not a man. You're not my father!"

"At last you know what it means to hate. You're ready to be a king."

"My hate will die with you!."

The old man is riddled with leprosy and ready to die. It is a fit metaphor for his diseased soul. He has tried to prepare his son to be king, but a horrible kind of king. Wallace taught him to be a different, better kind of king. He didn't want Scotland to toss off one tyrant for another. And soon he would leave Scotland to toss off the tyrant known as Edward Longshanks.

Fathers shape their sons with their words and actions. Too often fathers twist their sons into either horrible replicas of their own tortured souls, or into weak souls like Edward's son. But it doesn't have to be that way. They can, by God's grace, shape them into "arrows of grace" they shoot into the future to change a time not yet here for the better. Behind the men that shape history are their fathers. Some have unleashed the terrors of hell upon the world through their sons. Some have released the blessing of heaven. Braveheart is a movie that also challenges fathers to consider how they raise their sons.

I have been out of circulation in the blogosphere due to preparations for the Encampment and recove

I have been out of circulation in the blogosphere due to preparations for the Encampment and recovery from it. My plan was to make sure that the Encampment was at least as successful as it has been in the past with Thom's direction and to make sure that we remembered our departed friends in a fitting way. I think we succeeded.

I have much to blog on regarding the Encampment. I will get it posted as I am able.

First of all, I have an oath that the Knights asked me to write for the squires and pages. Actually the idea was Thom's and he had planned to write it himself. As a former scout master he wanted to model our oath on the Boy Scout Oath. Well, he never got an opportunity to write it so I did.

But before I get to that, I want to say a little about what I taught the boys over the weekend. I spoke about virtue and how the Latin root vir means both virtue and man. In other words, virtue is manliness. Men are supposed to be strong.

I also told them that virtue is a habit, a good habit. Bad habits are easy to form. They are usually pleasurable and we repeat them frequently without any effort until they become second nature. Virtue is also second nature, but the formation of the habit of virtue is difficult, because its consistent repetition is difficult. Virtue most often goes against our ease and requires us not to seek our immediate pleasure but a goal difficult to obtain.

Just as with anything else, our success in matters of virtue depends on our motivation. If we are motivated to become a good athlete, we will put ourselves through all kinds of inconvenience, as St. Paul says: Athletes exercise self-control in all things; they do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable one (1 Corinthians 9:25). How often are we willing to torture ourselves for ephemeral goals, when for eternal life we are willing to do so little?

True manliness is something that has to be cultivated. It takes practice. Much more effort is required to be virtuous than to ride a skateboard, play a video game, or excel in baseball.

Men and boys need to be challenged. They need to see the adventure of ordinary life. Real manliness means to be responsible for one's actions.

I pointed out to the boys that virtue was second nature to Marc Girard, so that when he had no time to think, his first instinct was to save his sister and go back into the water for his father. He was going to come up with his father or not come up at all. He died a hero, because he lived a life of virtue.

So conclude my talk with the boys, I told them to do four simple things, consistently, as a matter of virtue: 1) make a morning offering everyday; 2) examine your conscience and make an act of contrition every evening; 3) treat your mothers with respect; 4) treat your sisters and other girls with respect. I told them that if they did these four things, they would acquire virtue. I also told them that these four things were not a synthesis of the spiritual life, but that I knew these things are particularly what they need to do as boys who are becoming men, and that if they did do them, then other important matters would fall into place.

On Saturday night after they recited the oath, I asked them to tell me the four things I had asked them to do. Then I said that the oath was the fifth thing, a kind of sacramental by which they could supernaturalize their motives and seek the grace of God.

So here is the oath:

The following is to be recited by both pages and squires:

By my honor I will strive to the utmost
To live according the ideals of Marian Chivalry;
To serve Christ and His Most Holy Mother,
And to defend the faith and the Church;
To seek the fellowship of good men,
And to hearken to their words;
To be humble and courteous,
And to serve the weak and the needy.

The following should be added by squires only:

To be chaste in thought, word and deed;
To see to it that no lady or damsel be brought to reproach through my fault;
To draw my sword only in the interests of truth and righteousness.
And then with courage and without retreat.

Pages are the boys from ages 6-12 and squires are the boys from 13-17.

I know that the oath is long. It is a synthesis of our Marian spirituality and an medieval knights oath. I am interested in your comments. I suppose it could be synthesized further, but not too much further. This oath cannot be as generic as the Boy Scout oath, since our organization is not as generic as the Boy Scouts.

In any case, the oath as it stands does embody the spirit that should belong to the Pages and Squires.

We have to turn boys into men--real men.

I am proud of you. I love you. These two things you can always trust to be forever unconditional and forever true.

The world is a beautiful and wondrous place. Look around you, and always strive to see the beauty in everything.

I entrust the task of protecting the beauty of this world to you.
I entrust the world to you.

I believe in you, and there is nothing you cannot do.

There is no problem in life which has no solution. There is always a solution. If you are ever uncertain as to what to do, always do what feels right. "What you feel is never wrong."

Memorize this old saying, and read it to yourself everyday when you wake, and each night before you fall asleep. "I shall pass this way but once; any good, therefore, that I can do or any kindness that I can show to any human being, let me do it now. Let me not defer nor neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again."

You must always strive to help others. Help them, no matter the circumstance, and remember that kindness is never unwanted. Especially kindness that is sincere, and honest.

Make the most of each day. If you ever say to yourself: "I have done enough." Ask yourself, honestly, if there is more that you can do.

Find out what the most important things to you are in this world. Now love those things. Love them limitlessly. That way no matter what happens you will always love what is important.

Remember always that you are important. Without you, the world would not exist.

And finally, be happy. Never expect anyone else to know what will make you happy. Find that which makes you happy, or create your own happiness from what you have.

We have a rhyme in the UK:
A son is a son till he takes him a wife
But a daughter’s a daughter

We have a rhyme in the UK:

A son is a son till he takes him a wife
But a daughter's a daughter for all of her life.

I think that is largely true. Most women don't distance themselves in quite the same way as some men once they are married. It's usually the adult daughter who takes responsibility for ailing parents, for example, no matter what other responsibilities she has.

I don't necessarily think that this is a bad thing. It seems that the most successful marriages are those where the husband is fully committed to his wife and puts her way above his mother in priorities. So often a son is the apple of a mother's eye. A woman told me recently how the only time she sobbed in public was when her son married but she was quite OK when her two daughters married. She liked her son's wife so it wasn't that, she just didn't want to lose her 'little boy'.

You do find some men are so emotionally committed to their mothers that they put her interests above those of their wives. They constantly visit and phone and are at their mothers' beck and call. They take the side of their mothers when they should be supporting their wives.

I know a man who has been married twice and is now in a third relationship. He has children from both marriages and from this relationship. He is a devoted and excellent parent, he really can't be faulted in any way.

His mother is an extremely possessive person and he was the favourite out of her three children - she absolutely doted on him. When he first married in his 20s, she bought a flat near where she lives and let him and his wife live there. She had her own key and would 'pop round', maybe to put some food in their refrigerator or bring something useful, any excuse, really, and she would let herself in with her key. It got to the point where the son was confiding in his mother about rows and difficulties with his wife. The mother, of course, didn't calm him down and talk sensibly, she stirred him up and eventually she was happy when they divorced. The second marriage followed the pattern of the first with exception of not living in his mother's flat.

Luckily for him, the man's new partner is a strong woman who wouldn't stand for this level of interference and put her foot down. He no longer dances attendance on his mother nor confides in her about his relationship. It's taken him to become a middle aged man before he could finally cut himself free of his mother's apron strings.

Second Chance é o primeiro single do album I'll be Lightning de Liam Finn.

Innocent youth, guilty society
As the summer dawn poured its light on a new day
A wreath of the liquid of life covers the street of London.
A mother cradles the silhouette of her son's soul.
And in a lawless silence the heaven is screaming:

How many of our sons and daughters, would be only
A shadow, all through a life?
How many mothers would be haunted
By the howling cry as the knife cut the tie?

Innocent lives, antisocial youth
In a prolific society with quick answer and quick fix
A sense of belonging in gangs they found.
Beneath a velvet of confusion,
In a deafening silence yet another soul escapes.

In our search for answers God is whispering:
Take my hand my son, take my hand my daughter
Your life will not be echoes and shadows
But a life all though life.

My son is 2 1/2. He is the sweetest, cuddliest thing around. Way more cuddly than my daughter was at

My son is 2 1/2. He is the sweetest, cuddliest thing around. Way more cuddly than my daughter was at this age - he still wants to get into bed and snuggle in the morning, which usually gains me an extra 30 -45 minutes of sleep - which I am all for. He also just comes over to me during the day and wants to sit on my lap - with his pacifier in mouth and his head on my shoulder, he is still my little babe...

I want to remember this time for when he is 15 and 16 years old and struggling to put as much space between me and himself as he possibly can, and I don't want to remember this in order to embarrass him, but instead to remind me that he isn't all gruff talk and gangling limbs - that underneath all that adolescent awkwardness and angst - he remains a sweet, and sensitive, and confused child. I think too often we just let our boys drift - we go all psycho on our daughters and all of a sudden over analyze their every move and action once they hit about 14, but somehow boys are able to drift right along.

As I teacher I heard over and over again "Oh, he's just acting like a boy", "Boys, will be boys", which are such hollow empty phrases - when our boys really do deserve better. This attitude is like giving a child a free pass to behave however they want. I don't agree. I think as a whole we need to hold our boys to higher standards and also keep them closer...

My mother recently acknowledged that she should have spent more time worrying about my brother. She wishes that she had made more time for him, to get to know him better. He is 36 now and married, and while he and my mother do have a relationship, so much of it is simply cordial - there isn't that knowledge there that comes with asking the deep questions and taking the time to listen.

My brother turned out fine and all that, but it was always my sister and I who were the recipients of those "talks" - which lasted well into adulthood and for the most part which I guess I finally outgrew when I became a mother myself - maybe it was because I finally started behaving better, who knows. However, my mother and I still talk a lot, about everything under the sun, and maybe part of it can be explained away because as women we do go through similar experiences, but I think if you take that position it is too easy of a cop-out.

The point is my mother regrets all those years when my brother was lost to her - he was always a good kid, played hockey, stayed above water in school - but if he tended to drift around on the weekends, or missed his curfew, or slept most of the day - there was nothing...

I don't want to be in this position with my son...

We have spent most of the day preparing for our road trip/vacation. We will load up the Honda Odysse

We have spent most of the day preparing for our road trip/vacation. We will load up the Honda Odyssey and drive for 19-20 hours. J and I went to Best Buy to get some of the essentials: batteries, CD player/headphones and Ipod radio transformer. We couldn't leave there without J needing to watch with amazement as some kid was using Guitar Hero. I'm not sure I get it. And then as we checked out, I didn't know how the checkout guy could seriously ask me if I want to buy insurance for a $19.00 CD player. Do people really do that?

When I came home, Ry and I played the basketball game, H O R S E. He seemed to enjoy making silly sounds and dance movements as a part of any shot he attempted. When J joined us, we changed the game to S A N D S K I N K, since he just learned about them in his ecology camp. The boys then lined up multiple squirt guns: the blaster, old school guns, sword like squirters, and a pirates head squirter. They were planning on a squirt gun rematch with their Uncle. And then the teenager next door stopped by because he was locked out, and he got the water party started.

The yard is trashed. There are a various assortment of squirt guns and pails scattered around. My sons are soaked to the bone literally. I feel like such a grown up. While my older brother, the teenager next door and my sons were getting soaked, I was working with my neighbor to cut down branches and dead trees. Actually, I was watching and trying not to get in the way as he sawed away and removed trees over the garage and in the back of the yard. For some reason, I often find myself surrounded by people that know more than me about "what to do." Therefore I'm often the guy standing near by, agreeing, or engaging them in conversation while they do the work.

It's funny, but I've often felt bad or ashamed that I'm not "Mr. know it all." You know the guy who always has a better way to do it, or makes comments when you try to do it, like, "what you really should do is," or" you don't want to get to close to that wire, maybe I ought to do it." This is the first time it has occurred to me that the price I've paid to get other people to do my work for me is to engage them in some dialogue about themselves. It's cheaper than getting a handyman.
