Meet Spencer Elden. Well, you've already met him. In the quasi-intimate sense. He's the baby on Nirvana's famous "Nevermind" album, floating merrily along reaching for that dolla dolla bill, ya'll.

And NPR (I love love love NPR) did a story on him.

"Quite a few people in the world have seen my penis," he says from his home in Los Angeles. "So that's kinda cool. I'm just a normal kid living it up and doing the best I can while I'm here."

You know what, that is kinda cool. Power to you, man. Wonder what it's like to be him on a daily basis?

"My friend is all like, 'Hey I saw you today.' And I'm like, 'Dude, I was working all day.' And he's like, 'No, I went to Geffen Records, and you're on the floor and you're floating and I stepped on your face. 'Cause I guess they have like a floating thing where people can like walk on me and stuff ... so it's kinda cool," he says.

That's kinda cool too, Spencer. He might just be one of the most non-famous famous kids out there. And he's kind of kickass. Badass too, because his parents sent him to military school for a bit. Here he is now, all growed up:

Read the piece on this kid. He doesn't just smell like teen spirit, he reeks of it. Kurt Cobain would be proud, dude.

Was looking around for something Nirvana related just so I could post this (below), which I saw for the first time this afternoon. Presumably this is well known material I've somehow missed but guessing it'll be new to quite a few of you too. File under bizarre.

Recording Nirvana Part 4: Smells Like Teen Spirit. Deconstructed by Butch Vig

The “coupe de grace” that killed crappy metal, this song and the recording of Smells Like Teen Spirit changed the face of music. In part 4, Nevermind producer Butch Vig again solo’s out sections of the multi-track, showcasing the vocals, the solo, and the energy. Truly awesome insight into an infamous song. Also, I dig how Kurt’s voice sounds like he’s been gargling acid by the end of the track.

Even though Pro Tools seems to be up in the mix, I’m glad to see Butch is still working on his SSL.

Smells Like Teen Spirit (‘Huele a espíritu adolescente’, en castellano) es el primer single de la banda estadounidense Nirvana (lanzado el 10 de septiembre de 1991). También es la primera canción del álbum ‘Nevermind’ (que salió a la venta el 24 de septiembre de 1991).

Esta compuesto por los tres miembros de la banda (Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl y Kirst Novoselic). Supuso una renovación del ‘hair metal’ de los 80 (que estaba apunto de desaparecer), que acabó llamándose Grunge.

Debido la popularidad entre los adolescentes, la denominaron como un himno de la Generación X (personas que vivieron su adolescencia a finales de los 80, caracterizados por: no creer en Dios, haber tenido relaciones sexuales antes del matrimonio y no respetar ni a sus padres ni a la Reina de Inglaterra. Son personas que han jugado tanto a las canicas como a la Playstation).

Caracterizado como ‘Rock alternativo’, Nirvana nos deleitó con ‘éste desodorante’ para el rock. Su canción fue aplaudida por la crítica y por el público.

Logró el puesto número 1 en las listas de: España, Irlanda, Nueva Zelanda, Australia, Francia, Bélgica y Estados Unidos. ‘Solo’ alcanzó un séptimo puesto en las listas británicas.

Solo me queda decir que es famoso el videoclip (el vídeo que más veces se ha sacado en la MTV Europea).

OK, so I have set myself the task of reviewing the second most overrated albums of the 90's (the first being OK Computer) whilst trying not to offend anyone and also trying to be fair.  It has been quite some time since I have listened to Nevermind all the way through.  Back in the day I listened to it endlessly and loved it.  It is a great album, certainly a very important album, maybe the most important of the 90's.  However, it is also a very ‘cool' album.  Many people give this top marks without thinking about it because it's cool to like Nirvana isn't it?  Cobain was such a tortured genius wasn't he?  My friends will think less of me if I don't like this album won't they?

I personally am not bothered about what is cool, what is not, about being pretentious etc.  If I like something then I like it, not because I'm expected to like it.  The same goes for if I dislike something.

Having said all that, I really enjoy this album.  It is a very solid piece of work; there are no problems at all with running through this from beginning to end, each song ranges from good to great and the power and energy runs throughout.  Add that to the nostalgia I feel, remembering listening to it as an 11 year old, then a few years later when everyone started listening again after Cobain's death, then it surpasses being just an album; it becomes part of my coming of age.

Smells Like Teen Spirit- Straight off the bat we get a cool riff and then BAM, the power hits us.  Like the album, this track is overrated and overplayed.  We shouldn't let this detract from the fact that it is still a fantastic anthem, which the so-called Generation X embraced.  A very powerful opener for an album, everybody's attention was grabbed and all eyes were on Seattle.

In Bloom- This next track is as every bit as good as Teen Spirit.  Cobain's guttural vocals, a big fat baseline and a great solo combine to bring us a superb song that sometimes gets forgotten, wedged between two better known titles.

Come As You Are- Featuring some of the best lyrics on the album and a hugely famous intro, Come As You Are is only second to Teen Spirit when it comes to popularity and fame amongst the Nirvana catalogue.  For me this is the best track on the album, Nirvana's best song in fact.  Absolutely incredible. Breed- Grohl's drums propel Breed throughout the next three minutes.  Cobain is great on vocals, the lyrics are once again very good and a middle eight that loses none of the songs fire and tempo.

Lithium- ‘I'm so happy cos today I've found my friends, they're in my head.  I'm so ugly, that's ok cos so are you' are my favourite lyrics from the album.  The chorus is the very essence of the grunge movement.  One of the best crafted songs on Nevermind. Listen to Lithium

Polly- Not as innocent as it first sounds, this acoustic track has darker undertones.  A slight change in mood here as we have a softer song with no loud moments, just Kurt, his guitar and minimal background.

Territorial Pissings- Pure energy is the only way to describe this song.  The drums, guitar and vocals all strain together to give this odd and almost novelty song a brute force that almost smashes it's way through the speakers.

Drain You- Another underrated track on an album with so many highlights.  The balance between all elements is spot on, including the brilliant lyrics.

Lounge Act- The intro starts with a big fat meaty bass line and then the track develops quite an upbeat tempo.  The vocals show off both sides of Kurt's abilities; in the first half we get his singing voice which is low and rough, then in the second half we get his scream and yell which makes his voice even more gravelly.  His voice IS grunge.

Stay Away- ‘Rather be dead than cool' perhaps the most fitting and revealing lyrics that Kurt Cobain penned.  A good solid track with brilliant drumming by Dave Grohl.

On A Plain- One of my favourite nirvana songs; everything about it, once again, fits together just right.  I just love the way the lyrics kick in at the start. Listen to On A Plain

Something In The Way- We started off with a heavy anthem but know we end the album on a quiet note.  This is even more laid back than Polly and it is so much better.  A very simple tune with a very simple yet beautiful harmony on the chorus, this is the most understated track on the album and, hence, the most underrated.

There is a hidden track called ‘Endless, Nameless'.  It doesn't really fit with the rest of the album and isn't a great track, however there is some good musicianship going on and a few good melodies intertwined with the rawness of the singing.

Smells Like Teen Spirit é a mais famosa das músicas do Nirvana e aparece em todas as listas que tratam de músicas que marcaram época. Seja músicas que tenham marcado pelos Riffs de guitarra, Pela melodia, Pela venda, pela quantidade de vezes que foi tocada.

Há quem diga que a letra(traduzida) é ruim, ou que a música é tocada com alguns poucos acordes e o solo é fácil de fazer. Mas nada disso importa, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" marcou uma geração e ajudou a escrever o Nirvana e a música dos anos 90 na história do Rock.

Uma música não precisa de virtuosismos para ser boa. Muito menos de letras "cabeça". Caso contrário, músicas como as de "Caetano Veloso" e "Orquestras sinfônicas" seriam muito populares. Mas não são.

Aquest Aquelarre de la suma vulgaritat garrula anomenat Operación Triumfo, un pseudoconcurs on un grup de paletes i caixeres del Carrefur juguen a fer veure que tenen molt de glamour, ha anat definitivament massa lluny en els seus infames despropòsits!

Una cosa és que versionin cantants nyonyipop i destroçin a Celine Dion o Maria Carey, que dius mira, segur que a aquestes pàmfiles tant els hi fa, però entrar dintre del Olimp dels clàssics del rock alternatiu agafant els HIMNES  de la adolescència grunge dels 90's per trepitjar-los i escopir-hi a sobre no té perdó!

Es que no tenen respecte ni pels morts! Kurt Cobain es deu estar regirant a la seva tomba de Seattle veient la vomitiva interpretació que han fet a la cançó emblema per excelència de l'angoixa existencial "Smells like teen sprirt"! Que serà el següent? Profanar la sepultura de Jimy Hendrix per cagar a sobre? Fer una versió de La Polla Records???  I els pobres Radiohead, que prou pena tenien ja de tenir a Britney Spears com a fan...

En fi! Suposo que en un país on les llistes de vendes estan encapçalades per gentussa com El Canto del Loco o Bertín Osborne, tampoc es pot demanar gaire més... D'on sortiran les masses que omplen festivals com el Primavera Sound, el FIB, el Summercase, el Festimad o el Vinya Rock? Del estranger? Quin misteri!
