If you are netizen like me, you’ll notice a plethora of websites where Palm is dissed endlessl

If you are netizen like me, you'll notice a plethora of websites where Palm is dissed endlessly - and often for good reason. No innovation on their devices, no multitasking OS ( aka Garnet), a rehash of what worked for them etc...

And some of it is very legitimate. One cannot imagine why Palm has simply been unable to release their next gen OS for so long. And why in the iPhone era, we have to put up with the relative antiquated abominations that Palm insists on selling.

However, most websites and their avid readers (like the author here) focus on simply how Palm has not evolved to a multi-threaded OS like Windows ( and utopically, like the OS on the iPhone). And that was my point of contention, that I'd like to clarify today.

I have owned a Treo 700p, Treo 750 and very recently a Treo 800w. And in addition, I also have a Centro. What I am writing is based on my experiences as a very real user - as I am sure most of my readers also are. And unfortunately, when technical reviewers review any product, they tend to focus on the technical details and how they stack up against other available products - not necessarily on the day to day usability of the products.

Which brings me to my central point - Why am I still a Palm Fan? The answer can be captured in one word - usability. Yes, Palm OS is antiquated. And its single threaded. But you know what, it is not a resource hog (like Windows Mobile), is utterly responsive, allows for single handed intuitive controls, does not hog memory everytime an application is fired up (for those of you who have not used Windows Mobile - you'll have to go to Task Manager every few hours if you have multiple apps open - because it just clogs your entire memory)

I travel a lot. And I entirely rely on my two cell phones to manage my life. One is a Palm. The other a high-end Windows mobile machine.

On my Palm, I can open and close apps as I want without killing the memory. On my Palm, I have Blazer which, even though its antiquated, is better than any browser in the market apart from Safari Mobile. (and it runs on EVDO). On the Palm, everything is one touch. And does not involve digging through menus. (Sadly on the Windows, I have to go to the menu when on a call to activate the Speakephone)

Yes, the Palm front-end has not changed in a long time. Yes, its not the most sophisticated OS around. But, as a user, its much easier to get things done on a Palm than any Windows handheld I have used.

And that's why I am still a Palm fan. Because, it runs on the Treo - which frankly any business user will tell you - is a great platform to get work done. And its simple. It makes doing things easy.

So while I would love the jazz of the iPhone on the Treo, the plug-n-play of Windows Mobile, in my mind, the Palm OS remains a worthy competitior because its a stable dependable workhorse - something that I continue to want my phone to be.

Recently, on July 12 to be specific, I purchased the new IPhone. To be frank, it’s an absolute

Recently, on July 12 to be specific, I purchased the new IPhone. To be frank, it's an absolutely amazing device and I'm loving everything about it. However, this post is not going to be a love story about me and my Iphone, but instead some thoughts on how much we all take this incredible technology for granted.

If you think about it, what this device, and each of those with similar technologies, offers is the ability to instantaneously communicate with any person at nearly any location on this Earth, and also hold all the information and knowledge human kind has in the palm of your hand. With the internet at such fast speeds, there is literally nothing you cannot figure out.

Imagine a hundred years ago, when our great grandparents were growing up, telling them that there would one day be a device that would hold the answers to all your questions and allow you to talk to (and even see) anyone in the world whenever your heart desires. They would think it was some crazy, unrealistic technology like what we think of in movies today like Star Trek.

Whether or not you have the iPhone, Blackberry, Trio, or any "smart phone," take a moment to realize how absolutely ridiculous this technology is, and how much power and know-how we can have sitting in our pockets right now.

It took me a while to convince myself to get the iPhone, but what finally pushed me over the edge is the thought that I'm paying $30/month to literally have the entire world in my hand. That's a hell of a feeling to have for the cost of a couple of pitchers of beer from Bear's Lair (UC Berkeley campus fyi)

I remember when all this technology first came out, I was so pessimistic, thinking how much it would ruin human to human interactions as everyone would always be online and communicating through that medium. I'm still absolutely fearful of that for myself, so if you ever see me looking at my phone when there's no apparent need to or there are people around, please call me out on it. I'll need all the help I can get to fight of this potentially dangerous addiction of always being 'connected' - whatever that really means.

We may not have personal levitation yet, but I must say, the iPhone is definitely bringing us closer that iRobot type future. With this explosion of facebook minifeed type services and 'smart phones,' it really seems we're all becoming one step closer to that 'god-like' characteristic of being all knowing - and that's really exciting and frightening.

Last week, we sent out a carefully crafted survey to our customer list hoping that we'd get about 40 or 50 responses to help us better understand what we're doing right and what areas we could improve.

To our surprise, we received an overwhelming response from over 360 customers who completed a fairly lengthy, 20+ question survey. The results were absolutely awesome -- surprising in many areas. They highlight a number of things where Axosoft can clearly do a better job and they also point to a number of things we are doing right. I thought it would be interesting to share some of the numbers visually, so I threw them into Keynote, charting and charted and graphed the responses.

Here are the results:

Q. Rate Axosoft in the Following Areas:

These results were very reassuring. My raw immediate reactions were as follows:

Holy cow, we have way too many "Never Used" responses. We need to do a much better job of getting users to know about the existence of the Axosoft Community site, Video Tutorial Podcasts and OnTime Overview Videos, all of which are excellent resources and free!

Although I never want to see a survey result of "Unhelpful" or "Terrible", it was good to see that we had fewer than 6 such responses total, combined for any question. Not bad when you consider more than 360 people responded. Now that we have a baseline, we'll have a goal to reduce even further terrible and unhelpful responses.

It was great to see the Axosoft Sales Reps, the Axosoft Web site and the overview videos get such awesome responses from customers who used those services.

Q. Which version of OnTime do you use:

We were pleasantly surprised with the results of this question as we did not expect nearly 80% of our survey respondents to be using OnTime 2008. This told us we've done a couple of things right: a) OnTime 2008 was a compelling upgrade for the vast majority of users and b) We've done a better job of making upgrades easier than previous versions.

Q. Which OnTime Products Do You Use?

Here we got confirmation that OnTime Windows is by far the most popular client type we offer. The high use of the OnTime Customer Portal (41%) was a bit of a surprise as was the 13% usage of the OnTime SDK. If 13% of our customers use the SDK, it deserves to get a bump in priority for continued enhancements.

Q. Which OnTime Functionality Do You Use?

The findings to this question were in-line with our expectations. It was great to see adoption of OnTime as a HelpDesk tool has already reached 50% of survey respondents. HelpDesk functionality was introduced in V7, so having 50% of our customers using OnTime as a helpdesk solution was great to see. Similarly, Wiki usage is growing rapidly. Having just introduced Wiki functionality in V8 only a few months ago, it's great to see more than 20% of our survey respondents using the team Wiki.

Q. What are Your Favorite OnTime Features?

OnTime's ability to automate workflow and to enforce team processes was listed by the most people as one of their favorite features. We've spent a considerable amount of time making sure the workflow functionality in OnTime is extremely flexible and it was good to see that its being used and loved by such a large group of people.

To balance out the favorite features question, we also asked which features users felt were missing or needed more work. The information there was extremely interesting, but publishing those results publicly would be handing a little too much ammo to our competitors (sorry guys).

Q. Which Smart Phone Do You Use?

The results here were predictable. But far more interesting was which smart phone users planned to purchase:

In my opinion, this puts the iPhone debate to rest. More people plan to purchase iPhones (even this early in the game) than all other smart phones combined. iPhone has already won the mobile platform wars.

Q. Which Browser Version Do You Use?

Two things are very interesting here: 1) FireFox's adoption rate is growing unbelievably fast with nearly 34% of our survey respondents using FireFox and 2) FireFox does a much better job than Microsoft in getting new version adoption as FF V3 has just barely been out for a few weeks and already more than half of the FF users are on the new version.

Q. Which Version of SQL Server Do You Use?

It was good to confirm that the vast majority of customers are on SQL Server 2005. However, due to a still large number using SQL 2000 (~24%), we need to continue backwards compatibility for these users.

Q. Do You Have Any Mac OS X OnTime Users?

Considering Axosoft's focus has traditionally been on Microsoft development teams, having a 12% response that yes, there are OS X users of OnTime was a bit surprising to some, but confirms the trend that users are migrating away from Windows at alarming rates. Note: the exact wording of this question was not about Apple hardware, but specifically Mac OS X.

Q. How Do Your Mac OS X Users Run OnTime?

As suspected, the majority use browsers. But still, the number of users utilizing a local Windows virtual machine was interesting.

Q. What Development Methodology Do You Use?

This question confirmed that the majority of software development teams don't follow a development methodology. But it also shows that of those who do, Scrum is one of the top methodologies getting adopted by teams. At Axosoft, we've been very intrigued with Scrum and the philosophy behind it. Scrum is very much inline with our own development philosophy, and we hope to improve OnTime even more so it addresses the needs of Scrum teams even better in the future.

Q. Would You Be Interested in an OnTime User Conference in Scottsdale, AZ?

We weren't sure what to expect with this question. But it was nice to see that nearly 1/3 of survey respondents would be interested in an OnTime User Conference. Looks like our Marketing and Training Team have their work cut out for them. Stay tuned.

Q. Does OnTime Truly Help You Ship Software OnTime?

At first, I was a bit disappointed with the results to this question. Sure, OnTime is helping about 6 out of 7 teams that use it ship their software on-time, but what about the other 1 out of 7? Why are they even using OnTime, if it doesn't help them ship software on-time?

Fortunately, we had a follow-up open ended question that asked users why OnTime isn't helping them ship software on-time. The results were more reassuring. Some of the respondents indicated that they were relatively new to OnTime and hadn't yet shipped a project since they started using OnTime. Some felt that OnTime did a great job, but their project completion issues were unrelated to OnTime (management, executives, customers - you know the drill). A small fraction of the 16% for whom OnTime was not yet hitting the mark gave the indication that OnTime is missing some important project visibility information that they find important to shipping software on-time.

Improved project visibility will be a major focus of the next major release of OnTime.

Countries of Origin:

We had users from more than 30 countries fill out the survey. With about 44% of survey respondents from abroad, this was an exceptionally balanced survey that represented a good sliver of our customer base.

Even More Information to Analyze

We have a lot more information to analyze. Several of our questions were open-ended questions where users could write their thoughts about Axosoft, OnTime and other related items. The responses to those questions were and will continue to be extremely useful to us as we plan for future versions of OnTime.

I wanted to also thank all of our customers and especially those who took the time to fill out the survey. The feedback we have received is instrumental to the continued success of Axosoft as a company and the OnTime product line.

Now, let me know if this poll was helpful:

...Outsourced to a marvelous bit of information from the comment thread to Janet Stemwedel's/Dr. Free Ride's last Friday's sprog blogging. Commenter Pseudonym wrote:

German engineers have a wonderful term which dates back to around 1970: "eierlegende Wollmilchsau", which translates to "egg-laying wool-milk-pig".

The idea is that it's the farmer's perfect animal. It gives you eggs, milk, wool and bacon. The trouble is, to get at the bacon, you cut off your supply of milk, wool and eggs. The moral of the story is that the person or thing that can do anything can't do everything.

....Similarly, the term can refer to a device or software which has lots of features, most of which aren't used or even useful. An example is a smart phone which is a phone, organiser, address book and games platform.

Foundation Series Post
As writers, we’ve all pretty much got used to the idea of taking a note

[caption id="attachment_16" align="alignright" width="73" caption="Foundation Series Post"][/caption]

As writers, we've all pretty much got used to the idea of taking a notebook with us to scribble down ideas about the current manuscript.

As an anchored author, however, you've got publishers, agents, PR & marketing colleagues, the media, other authors, and your readers all demanding a piece of your time when they need it. Thanks to the myopic industry pretense that there's no such thing as a fiction author with a day job, most of these people think you're sitting at home behind your computer, and expect you to respond within hours, if not minutes, of receiving their request.

So you need to figure out a way to take as much of your writing affairs with you wherever you go.

Carrying everything electronically makes it convenient, and saves you re-typing work when you get home, but if you're more comfortable, or your lifestyle or day job dictates the use of paper, accept the compromise - it's better than not having access at all, and you can still achieve a lot with pen and paper.

Here some of the things you should be carrying with you at all time, and ways you might want to carry them.

The Current WIP

Your current manuscript, and all the support files that go with it that you consult while you're writing (research material, character profiles, outline or synopsis, list of character names and their role in the story, etc.)

Laptop computer

PDA or Smart phone & fold-up keyboard

Electronic reader of some type, such as the Kindle or Sony e-Reader, and a notebook to pick up where the electronic file leaves off.

Compact, bound notebook dedicated to this manuscript.

Your day job's computer, with Internet access, and your manuscript parked on an on-line file space, such as Google Docs, or Microsoft space (which won't allow access to the manuscript outside your day job).

Your day job's computer and a USB memory stick.

Manuscripts you're trying to sell, or have sold but not published, yet.

Laptop

PDA or smart phone and fold-up keyboard

Your day job's computer with internet access.

Your day job's computer and a USB memory stick.

Already completed manuscripts need to be carted around in editable electronic format. You can't make on the spot edits and send them to your editor immediatly if you're using a bound notebook.

Contact information for everyone involved in your business

This includes their email, all their phone numbers, snail mail address, IM address, website (and appropriate log-ins for that site if necessary).

Laptop computer

PDA or Smart phone

Day-Runner, or Filofax or other paper-based PIM system.

All your marketing materials

All the marketing and support files, and all the materials that have been generated for the book you're currently marketing.

Laptop computer

PDA or smartphone and keyboard

Your day job's computer with internet access

Your day job's computer and a USB memory stick.

Most marketing materials are delivered electronically, including media kits, these days. If you're pro-active about your own marketing (and you should be), then you'll need all of it ready to go when you need to send it somewhere pronto.

A laptop looks like a clear winner for carrying everything with you, as it can handle all of the above and more, with no messy synchronizing when you get home.

For the record, I personally don't like using them. They're clunky, heavy, and impossible to whip out and jot down a quick sentence when you're standing in a line. And the fact most people overlook is that you're carrying around with you the sum total of years worth of sweat and agonizing. If the laptop is stolen, it isn't simply a matter of phoning the publishing company for a replacement manuscript and cancelling the stolen one, like you do with a credit card.

I used a laptop for two years, and was relieved when it went belly-up a few months ago. Now I use a combination of a Palm Pilot and keyboard, cellphone, and a high capacity USB memory stick for when I'm at the day job.

How do you carry your career around with you?

Everyone’s talking - and blogging - about the latest iPhone. As one of the original owners, th

Everyone's talking - and blogging - about the latest iPhone. As one of the original owners, there on iDay 2007, how can I resist?

You may be surprised to hear I'm not buying a new phone. GPS would be nice, but the geo-tracking already built in is enough to get me un-lost when needed. The faster Internet? Well, I admit that's tempting, and ultimately I may upgrade. But a plastic case? Really?

Actually, the best part of iPhone 2.0 isn't the new phone, it's the software. Fortunately all iPhone owners get it, not just the newbies. There are plenty of new features, from subtle to amazing, but the single most revolutionary change is open developer access. Programmers are now writing iPhone applications as fast as they can type.

Download new iPhone apps directly to your phone via the iTunes store. Many are free, others cost. Look for a rapidly expanding selection as more and more programmers get involved in iPhone development.

The most useful app I've found is the new iPhone version of Jott, a free reminder service I wrote about a while back. It records a voice message but transcribes it to a written note. Perfect for jotting down your to-do list in the car or between meetings.

Many apps tie into social networking, so you can tweet to Twitter throughout the day, locate Facebook friends who are close using GPS, or instantly geo-tag and post new photos to Flickr.

But my very favorite so far is midomi. Have you ever heard a great song and wanted to know the artist? Hold up your iPhone to the radio so midomi can listen. In seconds, you'll have your answer. Can't remember a favorite song but you can hum the tune? Sing directly into your phone. Seriously. I'm so fascinated I've been singing to my dogs for the past 20 minutes to see if I could stump it. So far it's gotten every single one right. I'll be unbeatable next time we play "name that tune" on trivia night!

One last thing...for all you Apple-bashing Microsoft devotees, you can sync with Exchange. Wirelessly. With push technology that rivals the BlackBerry. The iPhone is now officially a player in the business cellular market.

Today I am doing a research on mobile Phones, as I am going to upgrade my mobile very soon, hay

Today I am doing a research on mobile Phones, as I am going to upgrade my mobile very soon, hay that’s an advantage working in a Mobile company, you get to upgrade to the top of the range phone for free! not really.

In all honesty I should say every one at work was looking for the new handset to upgrade as our CEO (Tom Alexander) promised to give all Orange employees new handsets.

I am specifically interested in the smart phones, one of the most popular smart device is the Blackberry, in case you don’t know who makes them, its Research In Motion, also known as RIM.

Blackberry Mobile phones are very common today because they support push email technology, mobile telephone, text messaging, Internet faxing, web browsing

[gallery]

If you’re a person who needs access to his important email, on the move, then its the right choice.

As blackberry can give you the access to your emails, prity much any place, example in your home, office, or even if your just stuck in the traffic congestion, you can access your important mail email where every you get a network coverage.

Another unique feature of Blackberry is all the data sent or received by the device is in a compressed format which is decompressed and then shown to the user, so this feature not only saves you time of download but also saves you decent amount of money, anyway for me my Boss pays the bills so lets not bother about it.

But the phone which stuck my eye is the HTC Diamond, I am not a big fan of HTC mobiles, as they use to be so big, I remember my work mates started bugging me, asking me if I got my brick today, well all I wanted to tell is it was too big to be called a Mobile phone, you can call it a phone but in all honestly it was no near to Mobile.

well things has changed now as the Touch Diamond is the lates device from HTC which not only looks good but works swiftly even though it has the MS Windows Mobile O/S. well that's really amazing isn't it ?

HTC have not only managed to give the device sleek look but have packed it up with really amazing features,

to start with as its running windows Mobile it has a good user friendly interface, runs windows mobile 6.1 which makes it more robust. As it has 4 Gb internal memory, lest hope that it does not freeze due to lack of memory, it comes with 3.15 MP camera, a GPS receiver and also support push email technology. and off course has all the features of PDA/ Organizer.

OK so the bottom line is this is prity much a computer!

yes but with a missing mice isn't it ?

Ok now you guys would be thinking why don't I talk about the I Phone. just to remind you that Orange do not sell the I Phone in the UK, what a shame!

Ok, just before you go don't forget to have a look the you tube video demo of the black beauty Diamond, hope you enjoyed reading as much as I enjoyed writing this article.

Google's at it again. They are known for easy and free, and GOOG-411 is no exception. This time they're eliminating those expensive cell phone calls to 411 directory assistance. Their free service helps you find what you need fast and easily, and they'll even connect your call or send you a map to the location.

It's completely voice-activated. Program 1-800-GOOG-411 into your cell phone favorites and you're ready to go. When you've found the business you want, say "text it" to send full details to your phone, or say "map it" to get a mobile map (assuming your phone has mapping capabilities).

Check out this video for a quick overview:

For full details, visit the 1-800-GOOG-411 Home Page. Or just program in that number and give it a try. It's really that easy. Gotta love Google!

This is a sad day my friends. I never thought I would become one of these people, but I think the day is approaching. I used to think that these people thought they were better than everybody else, that the only important person on this earth was themselves, and that they wanted people to know they were important. Every time I saw a person like this, I used to die a little bit inside because they represented to me everything in American materialist culture. But as I said my friends, I think I may join the ranks of these people and I will have to change my previous stereotypes.

I'm talking about a smart phone owner. There's something about seeing a Blackberry that makes me cringe. For some reason, when I see one, it just makes me think buisness. It could be because I have never been driven enough to own a smart phone to do my tasks. But as I said, it may be time to become a smart phone owner.

Here is why I say this. There are times when somebody asks me about my schedule and more often than not, I can never answer them on the spot. I don't know my schedule off the top of my head and my schedule is all on my MacBook and believe it or not, but I don't carry my MacBook everywhere I go. I have also been using the notes function on my cellphone more often because my memory is getting fuzzy and I don't usually have paper and pen with me. Plus it is extremely difficult to type notes to yourself on a standard 12 key phone. I have even begun using my phone as a calender trying to figure out what days are when.

So friends, it may be time. The problem is, I don't know a whole lot about smart phones and am not sure where to start. It looks like I have some research to do. Does anybody have some smart phone suggestions out there (for T Mobile)? I seriously need to get more organized.

Young Beijing Bedouins' modern mobile lifestyles

China is leading the global pack in modern mobile lifestyles. Young Beijing Bedouins have the cheapest, coolest and fastest cell phones and wi-fi gadgets in the world. Today's Chinese kids are super cyber-connected and savvy to the latest technology, whether it be the latest iPhone or aWorld of Warcraft video game.

By Valerie Sartor
China.org.cn columnist

Full article > HERE

EXCERPT: Modern technological gadgets: young people love them and older people are trying to get used to them. For my grandmother cars represented the height in mobility; for me watching television and later riding in a Boeing 747 started me dreaming about traveling to other parts of the planet. But China's youth doesn't have to go anywhere to be deemed urban gypsies: today's technology allows them to communicate with others anywhere in the world instantly -- and it's getting better, faster and cooler as each year passes.

The American thinker Lewis Mumford started writing back in the 1950s about machines as extensions of human consciousness and the consequences of technology upon human societies. In the 1970s Marshall McLuhan, a Canadian media and communications specialist highly influenced by Mumford, wrote that the "medium is the message"-- communications technology affects the thinking process -- and ultimately the way humans organize as social units. McLuhan predicted that everyone would become a "global village citizen"when linked decisively by electronic technologies. His premise stated that technology would create a new age with one collective human identity. But McLuhan specifically stressed that we should remain aware of the media's cognitive effects because every global village has the potential, due to human frailty, to become totalitarin and full of terror.

Today's youth has grown up with technology, incorporating computers and cell phones into their ordinary lifestyle. Significantly, in Beijing almost every young person I know owns a laptop and a fancy cellphone -- these kids are part of the generation I term contemporary nomads because they have the capacity to travel through cyber space and communicate with other people living around the globe.
