I tested it thoroughly for back-focussing at their shop and was more or less happy with the copy i got.

That's the bad stuff... the rest is all good...

This lens takes beautiful pictures in almost any scenario... with x1.6 crop 350D... its a like the good old days...

I recently purchased a new Canon EOS 450D (a.k.a. Digital Rebel XSi) as a digital alternative to my faithful companion, Canon EOS 10. I did my homework around my existing lenses but missed the point that several people have already experienced problems with my faithful 300 mm zoom lens, Sigma 70-300mm 1:4-5.6 APO Macro (ca.1996!), when used with digital EOS series. Apparently there is an upgrade available for certain Sigma lenses but I wrote to Sigma only after having purchased the 450D. Of course, my Sigma lens was not upgradeable.

I am a bit hesitating with the idea of buying the new Canon EF DO IS 70-300mm lens for the price three times more than my camera body! I will probably try to live with my Sigma lens, because the situation is not that bad. I get the dreaded Err 01 (communication error, clean the lens contacts, blah, blah, blah) mostly in cases that I don't use often with the zoom, anyway:

• Never the message with full focal length of 300mm, macro or not macro switch on
• Always the message with focal lengths less than 250mm, with following program selector modes (It does not matter if I use Auto Focus or Manual switch position on the lens):
  • A-DEP
  • M
  • Av
  • Landscape

About for every other use the lens works fine with the 450D. I am planning to keep the Sigma zoom on my EOS 10 but, keeping the above limitations in my mind nothing prevents me to put it on the 450D when a need arise. I just saved me a big chunk of money!

El monumento que sin duda alguna es mas conocido de la ciudad de Besalú, es su magnífico puente románico, construido como vía de comunicación entre la villa y la otra orilla del río Fluviá. A caballo entre las dos orillas, se aprovechó la inmejorable situación de unas grandes rocas situadas en el lecho del cauce, que sirvieron entonces y sirven aún hoy en día de cimiento para los 7 arcos de medio punto que conforman el puente. Compuesto de dos tramos que forman un ángulo oblicuo entre si, cuenta con un total de 145 metros de recorrido por un ancho que oscila alrededor de los 5 metros.

Y en realidad no se trata de una forma tan nueva. Una película fotográfica color, análoga y tradicional, basa su funcionamiento en tres capas superpuestas, que sensibles a distintos rangos del espectro de luz visible, permiten registrar una imagen a color. Lo novedoso es que los creadores del foveon aprovecharon este concepto y lo aplicaron a un sensor del tipo CMOS para lograr un chip que registra, uno encima del otro, los tres componentes de color (rojo, verde y azul) para cada pixel de la imagen.

En una cámara de fotos digital normal, el chip (normalmente un CCD, aunque ultimamente hay mas CMOS) tiene lo que se denomina un filtro de bayer, una cuadricula donde se intercalan filtros de color aplicados a cada pixel (50% verdes, 25% rojos, 25% azules, por lo general). El microprocesador de la cámara es el encargado de interpolar (adivinar, para ser mas claros) cual es la información de color de los píxels, de acuerdo a los adyacentes. Este método implica algunas consecuencias no deseadas: además de la obvia pérdida de información del color, puede producirse moiré de colores y desenfoque.

Los sensores Foveon X3 no tienen un filtro, ya que registran "3 pixels" uno de cada color para cada "pixel de la imagen final". Este chip logra que en cine digital se hace usando tres CCD, y dividiendo la imagen en tres haces con un prisma, solo que esto ocurre adentro mismo de un único chip. Asi un chip de 14 megapixels no entregará una imagen final de 4536*3024, sino una imagen de 4.5 megapixels, pero con una definicion de color y detalle próximas a lo que nos proporciona un CCD común de unos 10 megapixels (más del doble). Se sabe que en fotografía no todo es los megapixels, el tamaño (superficie) del chip es muy importante, y los foveon son realmente grandes comparados con otros sensores digitales. Además han sido implementados principalmente en cámaras Sigma, que se caracterizan por tener muy buenas lentes.

Por todas estas cosas, me sentí obligado a investigar sobre el tema, y me quedé con todas las ganas de poder probar en algún momento una cámara con equipada con uno de estos sensores. Mientras tanto me pasé por flickr, y me quedé mirando algunas fotos tomadas con foveon. Espero que las disfruten tanto como yo.

I have borrowed two lenses whilst I think about my next lens, and save up for it. I received the Sigma 18-200 IS lens and the Sigma 70-300 lens, which has more reach, doesn't have image stabilisation and costs a lot less. I took some photos this morning to test out the two lenses, essentially with the aim of finding out how important image stabilisation was. I took several photos, handheld, going up to around 1/1000s shutter speed.

Since I'm into birds now, I took photos of birds some distance away, knowing I'd need to crop them. For the Sigma lens, I took pics at 200mm and 300mm for comparison.

Results

I wasn't too surprised to find that the expensive lens got sharper pictures with more detail at 200mm. What did surprise me was that the two lenses gave similar quality cropped images with the cheap one at 300mm and the expensive one at 200mm (and hence with more cropping). I was able to see about the same fine detail on the bird's wing and in the blades of grass around it. I felt that the expensive one was giving me a slightly clearer image overall, but I couldn't really be sure.

Conclusion

OK, so the 200mm is 3 times the price of the 300mm, but it looks like the cheap 300mm really is not worth putting on a dSLR like the 450D. To get similar results to a better lens with only 2/3 the focal length, you're limited to fast shutter speeds and hence good lighting; I'd expect with more experience I'd see larger differences, too. Personally, I'll borrow as long as I can so I can save up enough for a decent Sigma lens.

First task... mate and I (mate from The Bear pub that is) had spent a little time a coupla weeks or so ago taking some pics in an area of Bedford known locally as Russell Park (see this post).
It had worked out ok but the thing we both failed to do (pressures of time and so forth) was to get any pics of the actual Park the area's named after.
So I'd had it in mind to remedy this oversight soon as pos'. Which, Thursday morning, I did. The light was a bit curious, bright and sunny one moment and overcast the next and of course it was early in the morning. So I kept tinkering with the white balance... bit of a bad move I suspect (with the benefit of hindsight!).
However, objective achieved and I now feel my Russell Park set on Flickr has been suitably completed.

On to the next task then... and the very reason why I'd wanted to get into town instead of just grabbing some sleep after a night spent staring at computer screens.
Ages ago (or so it seems) I'd ordered a new lens from my local friendly Jessops.
Well, time went by. Then more time went by. Then I started getting emails and text messages from them on practically a weekly basis letting me know that the lens still hadn't arrived.
Then a week or so passed with no word at all... until Wednesday. Get both a text and an email (about half-eleven in the morning) that the lens has arrived! Yippee!
Problem was though, couldn't get into town Wednesday. Hence, taking on board the eagerness to get my hands on a new bit of kit, the incredibly stupid plan to get into town first thing the following morning, despite the fact I already knew I'd be up all Wednesday night.

"Yeah, I can do that" I thought. "Easy". Yeah. Right.

So. The lens.
Well, its a Sigma... their 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC "Macro" as they call it. Not a proper macro in the strictest sense (its a 1:2.3)... that's still on my shopping list. But hopefully a bit better for close-ups than my existing Samsung kit lenses.
And that's the point.
To replace the kit lenses that came with the Samsungs (fortunately both the GX10 and GX20 lenses - Pentax fitting - are interchangeable).
Ok, theoretically its not a huge improvement cos, let's face it, the lens is at the lower end of Sigma's range but I have no doubt whatsoever it is an improvement. In fact, on the basis of the first session I had with it, quite a significant improvement... but more of that anon.
So essentially I'm gaining one extra stop, and its a 17-70mm as opposed to the kit lenses that are 18-55mm.
It also feels a lot more substantial. And its a whopping 72mm diameter at the front! The UV/Skylight filter for that's gonna cost an arm and a leg (relative to the other filters I've got that is... none of which come anywhere near that size). Dammit.

As a general purpose walkabout lens I'm well satisfied... so far. But time will tell of course.

Ok. Having got the Russell Park shots out the way and collected the new lens I was of course eager to try it out.
But needed somewhere to have a play with it first... check everything's present and correct, make sure I've been supplied with the right fitting, and so on. Bit too early for The Bear (about 0930 now)... but hey, its breakfast time!
Find a suitable establishment, attend to the needs of the inner man, then open the box. Instruction leaflet/guarantee? Yep. And quickly discarded with little more than a cursory glance. Lens hood? Yep. Apparently Sigma include them with practically all their lenses. Top marks Sigma. Right fitting? Yes!
All that remains is attach it to camera (the trusty old GX10) and start using it for real.

Onto stage three of my pre-planned day then.

For some time I've had in mind to take the camera to a part of Bedford known as Ampthill Road. Its actually a bit of the A6 that takes traffic coming from Luton through the town centre then on out northward to Rushden (or vice versa of course).
Some years ago (and for quite a long time) it was a thriving manufacturing area of the town providing significant employment for local people. Most of that's now gone. There were a couple of petrol stations along the road (the section I'm talking about, from off the town centre southwards for about a half-mile) that have been closed down for a while. Large blocks of office accommodation stand vacant and up to let, and quite a few small retailers have closed up shop too.
Despite the construction of a few new apartment blocks the whole area now has a somewhat depressed feel (shame really, cos there's some very nioe, and old, houses along there) and I'd thought it would provide opportunities for some interesting shots.

That was the plan then and, though I didn't exactly set about it with gusto (cos by this time I was feeling a tad weary) it all worked out reasonably well.

Hmm. Now lunchtime, head back to The Bear. And of course I couldn't really regard the session with the new lens fully over 'til I'd grabbed at least a few shots from there, now could I?

So, loiter round there until mate finishes work then wander over to the supermarket for my weekly shopping (all part of my carefully constructed plan... "In town Thursday? May as well do the shopping then".) Which meant I didn't manage to get back home until early evening.

Of course, throughout all my ever-so-careful pre-planning I'd overlooked one small but quite important situation.
Having been out a significant portion of the day taking snaps I'd now got a good 160+ of the damn things on my memory card. And they had to be edited (down to a sensible number at least), processed, uploaded etc.
And I'd still not had any sleep!
Ho hum. "In for a penny, in for a pound" as they say. Just plough on regardless then.
In between dozing off over the keyboard a coupla times finally managed to get everything done by about 6.30 Friday morning... and at last I could get to remind myself what my bed looks like.

All in all though a reasonably satisfactory session. But never again!

Desweiteren komme ich nun endlich dazu, ein paar Takte zu meinem letzten Wochenende zu schreiben. Das habe ich nämlich in Köln vrbracht, genauer auf der Photokina. Ich war zum ersten mal da (immerhin fotografiere ich ja auch noch kein Jaaber das, was ich gesehen habe, war wirklich beeindruckend.

• Canon EOS 50 D: Eine hervorragende DSLR, die zwar ohne Volformat-Sensor auskommt, dank rund 14 Megapixeln und auch sonst üppiger Ausstattung am Profi-Sektor kratzt und einen guten Start in den oberen Sektor digitaler Spiegelreflexfotografie darstelt. Schließlich werden die Cannon L-Optiken, die für vollformat-DSLRs (EOS 1D und 1Ds, 5D) Pflicht sind, auch an der 50D für einen merkbaren Unterschie sorgen können.
• Nikon D700: Nikons verspätete Antwort auf Cannons EOS 5D, üppiger ausgestattet (Stichwort Autofokus) aber mit 2700 € auch noch ein gutes Stück teurer. Wer aber schon ambitionierter Nikonograf ist und über ein paar starke Objektive verfügt, sollte sich den Reiz des 35mm-Formates einmal gut überlegen.
• Sony Alpha 900: DAS DING! Vollformat-Fotografie mit Zeiss Optiken. Während sie von Sony bescheidener Weise als Semipro-Kamera ausgeschrieben wird, ist meine Meinung, das sie sich vor einer D3 oder 1D nicht verstecken muss. Ausstattungsmäßig auf jeden Fall vergleichbar mit den ganz großen, ist der Preis von unter 3000 € ein Statement, das sich sehen lassen kann und mit dem Sony Cannon (hoffentlich, ich gönne es den Japaneren) endlich bei hat. Ein Paar Testbilder auf der Messe haben mich auf jeden Fall von der a900 überzeugt. Wenn ich irgendwann Vollformat anfange, dann mit Sony!

Neben den drei (für den Hobbyknipser mit durchschnittlich gefülltem Geldbeutel) bedeutendsten Produkten der Messe, gab es natürlich viel mehr zu sehen: Hasselblad, Leica, Zeiss und  Mamiya boten eindrucksvolle Vorstellungen dessen, was möglich ist. Auch an den Ständen anderer namhafter Kamera-und Objektivbauer gab es was zu sehen und anzufassen. einmal durch das Sigma 200-500 f2,8 zu knipsen ist schon ein tolles Gefühl (Vor allem bei dem Gedanken, dass man für die 25.000€ vor der Kamera auch ein Auto kaufen könnte). Schließlich konnte ich auch noch ein Paar Entscheidungen treffen:

1. Olympus e3: Meine nächste Kamera. Ein echt solides Stück Fotoapparat für etwas rauhere Verhälnisse (Spritzwassergeschützt, eingebauter IS, mächtiger Staubschutz und der schnellste Autofokus auf dem Markt), zwar "nur" mit 4/3 Sensor, aber an sonstiger Ausstattung keineswegs geizig und trozdem mit dem Zuiko Digital 14-54 zu einem vertretbaren Kitpreis von roundabout 1800 € zu erstehen.
2. Sigma 105mm f2,8 EX DG Macro. Ich liebe Makro. Ohne Frage werde ich mir diese Objektiv kaufen.
3. Zuiko Digital 25mm f2.5 Pancake. Damit wird meine e410 zur ultimativen stealth-Konzertkamera. Muhahahahaha :D

Als Referenz zu den 4/3-Spieleugen: hierlang
Übrigens ein sehr gelungens System, das zwar seine Schwächen (Sensorgröße...) hat aber für ein bisschen Action immer zu haben ist, und genau das macht doch Spaß: Raus aus der Bude und irgendwas fotografieren.

Und natürlich habe ich es mir nicht nehmen lassen, auch noch ein kleines Schnäppchen abzugreifen: Cullman Universal Magic Stativ mit Kugelkopf, wobei der Name Programm ist: Das Stativ ist klappbar, lässt sich mit wenigen Handgriffen aufbauen, zu einem Einbein umbauen oder durch einschieben der Mittelstange von unten als Makro-Helfer nutzten. Komplett für 75 statt 120 €, und für die e410 völlig ausreichend (ob es die e3 sicher tragen kann, wird sich irgendwann herausstellen

Canon lance son G10, dispo en octobre pour 600 euros, avec mode raw, un zoom de 28 mm... Nikon, quant à lui, annonce le D90, qui remplace le D80.
