The league coordinators have had some issues, but tonight is the first practice and Saturday is the first game!  Of course, I am the coach.

I should have seen it coming...

I have to get this group of 5-8 year old kids to work together enough to play some kind of game on Saturday. 

It would have been nice to be able to actually teach them something BEFORE the first game.   My plan is going to be simple.   Lets teach them defense and try to keep the score down so we do not get humiliated and have their feelings hurt on the first week.

Kids are going to naturally be able to run with the ball.   My son is an excellent passer, I just don't know if I have any excellent receivers.    I will teach them how to play good sound position defense.  String out the play and get them either out of bound or to have them reverse field keep people on the backside of the play.

Flag football is meant to be a passing game.  I was able to teach the boys how to pass and catch and actually be able to get first downs using some actual developed skills.  The other teams just handed the ball of and let everyone run around chasing each other.  The other teams had better athletes, but we had actually developed better skills.

The purpose of our league is to develop skills for the older leagues and I try to make that my first goal.  If we can win in the process, then all is good.  More ofter than not, we end up winning, but playing smarter than the other teams.
