Here is my updated eclectic ranking according to Last.fm

Take your top 20 artists. For each of these artists, collect the top 5 similar artists. The resulting number of unique artists is your eclectic score.

If the score is small (extreme = 5) your musical preferences are very limited, and if it is large (larger than 80, extreme = 100), then you have an eclectic musical preference.

You can compute your own score here

The new Coldplay video is cheap, and I don’t mean in an awesome “low-budget” kind

The new Coldplay video is cheap, and I don't mean in an awesome "low-budget" kind of way. More like shitty, crude, and passed off as what I'm sure the record execs called "interesting" and "thought-provoking". Deciding to jump on the "good idea=less money" bandwagon, their new video for "Violet Hill" is just too little too late.

With an inconsistent tone comprised of Chris Martin staring at the camera angrily to goofing around with his band mates, director Asa Mader makes the same errors Mark Romanek did with MJ's "Scream". Are we angry? Upset? Playful? In that bisexual gray area of uncertainty?

Trying to grow brains?

Possibly Bipolar?

Part solemn performance video in castle ruins, part playing around in nature, "Violet Hills" leaves audience members feeling hollow and flattered, like seeing a behind-the-scenes documentary of the band's intimacy, only Chris Martin dies in the end.

More effective than cutting your wrists horizontally!

Using stop-motion, un-original costuming, and an overworked film aesthetic, this under-shot video's influences can be broken down thusly:

Tom Vek - C-C- Drum Major attire, similar landscape:

GOOD JOB, guys! You finally figured out how to pull off the Cold Mountain look even though Jude Law called in sick. Too bad Tom Vek pioneered it in 2005 at 1/10th of the cost. If I see one more of these get-ups I am going to scream. That includes you too, Panic! At the Disco

White Stripes- The Hardest Button to Button- Pixillation style video/performance:

If you are going to have pixillation in your video, then have it, god damnit! Don't just stick it in for 10 seconds because you undershot your entire film. Jump cuts won't save you, nor give you any Godard points.

Albert Hammond Jr - In Transit - Film flashing:

Oh snap! It's like you're using REAL FILM! How about instead of shelling out the big bucks for film flashes and shitty 16mm home-movie style cinematography, you just shoot the whole thing in HD and get a better shooting ratio, (ie: not 1:1!)

Nice one, Coldplay. You remind me of my hipster friends that try and hide the fact that they come from rich parents. Don't be afraid to flaunt your wealth, like you did in the brilliant "The Scientist". Just because you wanted a "raw" and "artsy" video doesn't mean that your production quality has to be low as well.

Take it from bands like OK GO, Feist, SHITDISCO, and even SIA: one simple idea=one great video. Several poorly executed concepts will never amount to one brilliant short.

Wer kennt Beautiful Katamari? Kurz zur Story: Der King of all Cosmos hat das Universum mit einem ung

Wer kennt Beautiful Katamari?

Anything that involves mixing guitars and electronic synths I tend to fall in love with- Trash Fash

Anything that involves mixing guitars and electronic synths I tend to fall in love with- Trash Fashion is exactly that PLUS the hot drum beats, bass playing and the English accented singing! They're songs have the elements of a rock band as a base with guitar riffs you'll fall in love with - their synth sounds and melodies are played over the top at several points in the songs. They remind me of Shitdisco but less synth and more rock. They've been doing lots of gigs and they've still got more coming being more popular by the day! We've Taped Over Your Cassettes opened for them in a recent gig - they were featured earlier.

Here's the funny interview they did:
Tell me a little about everyone?
jet storm, 26, from brum innit
mason storm, 28, also from brum innit
k bomb, 20, from the you ess of aye
bam bam, 24, from crawley, saaaaaff laaandan like

What did you guys do before you started to make music?
we were all in some sort of educationalistical kinda vibes really. some of us worked harder than others i think it's safe to say!!

How did you start out/ was it hard?
we started out doing a couple of gigs at a night we were doing in brum at the time. helped us get over the fear/reality of bombing in front of lots of people! after the first few fuck ups you stop caring!

Any big plans for the near future?
got our "why can't we be friends" single coming out 10th march, then another for the summer, followed by album. also really looking forward to our mini album coming out in japan on 26th may. really want to get over there man!

What's the best thing about doing live gigs?
always cool speaking to fans and all that shizz, but generally being on stage is buzz-tastic, (when it's going well anyway!) lugging equipment around and sitting in a crappy transit for days on end aint all that tho

--Random Question Time--
What song have you been listening to most in the past few weeks?
jigsaw from radiohead

What one materialistic thing can you not live without?
my geeky pocket pc phone

Does being in a band help in picking up girls/boys?
err yeah it did once upon a time, until we got so busy we couldn't go out anymore!!

For all you guys who are in Austin, Texas- you have a chance to see them live!
They'll be at SXSW for their showcase gig on the 12th of March for fused magazine.
It'll be held in the Tap Room at Six Lounge and they'll be onstage at 11:15pm. So use this chance to check them out before they get big where you'll have to see them in a bigger crowd.
Click on their links to check out their songs and upcoming shows!

The Yuksek remix of Shitdisco's "OK" makes me freak out. Total knee-jerk reactions.
This cat has a long history in the music biz. Like, Mozart or something. Child prodigy stuff. I missed the last show that he headlined out here in Chicago with the esteemed blog-squad Fluokids. And by all accounts it was not the show to miss. Oh well, c'est la vie.

El primer single y esquizoide manifiesto disco-punk “Disco Blood”, por ejemplo, tiene un alegre coro que reza “got that disco feeling on my mind, got it in my blood”.

::MENTES-INQUIETAS::
