Hillsong has been going to schools, teaching Australia's daughters. In fact they've been to my school and taught my friends. I always got a bad vibe from the Shine program, which was pushed relentlessly at assemblies and year meetings until enough people joined up. It's not nice to know that I was right.

They've taken a leaf from fun feminism, preaching about gaining self-esteem through the application of makeup. There must be something besides carcinogens in that crap, because I would have to get high to sit through two hours of etiquette and deportment lessons.

"Through skin care, natural make-up, hair care, nail care girls discover their value and created uniqueness," the material says.

The term has been omitted from more recent material but the beauty classes remain, as do etiquette and deportment lessons.

I know this is the point where I'm supposed to ask what century we're living in. I'm not, because this is the 21st century and patriarchy is clearly alive and well.

We last heard about Hillsong when one of their other programs set up to help young women involved performing exorcisms. And some people think America has a lock on the crazy Christians.

It's that time of the year again! Below are the 12 nominees for 2008's Mercury Music Prize. And the latest odds as of the 22nd of July.

* Adele - 19 8/1
* British Sea Power - Do You Like Rock Music? 8/1
* Burial - Untrue 6/1
* Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid 6/1
* Estelle - Shine 8/1
* Laura Marling - Alas I Cannot Swim 8/1
* Neon Neon - Stainless Style 10/1
* Portico Quartet - Knee-Deep In The North Sea 10/1
* Rachel Unthank & The Winterset - The Bairns 10/1
* Radiohead - In Rainbows 5/1
* Robert Plant & Alison Krauss - Raising Sand 6/1
* The Last Shadow Puppets - The Age Of The Understatement 5/1

For the most part the choices are quite predictable. And the odds don't really seem to favour any obvious favourite, which is wise as the judging panel rarely picks any 'favourite'.

Radiohead are always a dead cert to be nominated whenever they can be. The list has the typical rock/'indie' slant to it with the usual, slightly patronising, 'Token Jazz' (Portico Quartet), 'Token Folk' (Rachel Unthank) and the 'Token Black' (Estelle) choices.

The only really suprising absences are, in my opinion, Portishead, for returning with a fresh and imaginiative return that is easily up there with their previous peak. And Coldplay, for being generally popular and not as shit as they used to be.

The smart money would be on Radiohead, the general consensus even by casual Radiohead fans, is that it's the strongest album they've done since the masterpeice that is Ok Computer. But as is common with the Mercury Music Prize, a complete outsider and relative unknown will probably win. So perhaps a speculative fiver on Laura Marling or Burial might be wise?

Overall, it's a strong list. I shall be buying the few albums on the list that I haven't heard or have been meaning to get around to buying, just so I can be justifably outraged when the judges commit another Klaxonesque blunder like last year.

When I've listened to all the albums and when I've got more time I'll do a more indepth analysis of the nominees with lots of samples and downloads too.

Salvatore Ferragamo Incanto Shine
NOTES (as listed on sephora.com): Pineapple, Passion Fruit, Freesi

[caption id="" align="alignright" width="150" caption="Salvatore Ferragamo Incanto Shine"][/caption]

NOTES (as listed on sephora.com): Pineapple, Passion Fruit, Freesia, Peach, Cedarwood, Amber.

Another perfume purchased on a whim. A friend of mine had purchased another Incanto, and despite being apprehensive, I decided to give it a go. The list of notes is short and sweet, with nothing shocking or unidentifiable. Plus, the bottle is SO cute.

CLASSIFICATION: Feminine, floral, fresh, fruity

AGE GROUP: Perfect for anyone

SIMILAR SCENT(s): N/A

FORM: Eau de Toilette

At first application, Incanto Shine is a sweet, fruity fragrance, with the top notes of pineapple and passion fruit dominant. The fragrance mellows quickly, though, becoming a fresh, fruity floral that reminds me of sunshine and happiness. Because of this, at first spray, Incanto Shine is more suitable for the younger crowd, but within minutes becomes a fragrance suitable for all ages, so be patient!

Honestly, I like the smell of Incanto Shine better at first application, however, I can't say that it's not interesting, or that I won't wear it again. It's a pretty distinctive fragrance, and maybe it's because of the short notes list, but it seems I can smell each individual note in this fragrance, which I have never experienced with a perfume before.

Most fruity floral fragrances are either too fruity, too floral, or too sweet, but Incanto Shine is different. Rather it is an equal mix of fruity and floral, and while it is on the sweet side, I do not feel as if I dipped myself in caramelized sugar.

I was expecting a more tropical fragrance from this with the top notes of pineapple and passion fruit, but Incanto shine is not a beachy, tropical scent at all. Although I was hoping for a more tropical fragrance, I am not disappointed at all with what it turned out to be.

REPORT CARD

(We highly recommend reading our guide to understanding our grading system if you haven't already)

First sniff (bottle): B+

First sniff (skin): A

Worn scent: B+

Staying power: B+

Scent as compared to note(s): A+

Bottle: A+

Overall: B+

Incanto Shine is the perfect casual fragrance for the spring and summer months, that is suitable for women of all ages that are looking for a light, fresh, fruity-floral.

EDIT: I have continued to wear Incanto Shine for awhile since posting the review, and it has grown on me even more. If you've read Rebecca's Incanto Dream review (which can be found here), you will see that that scent reminded her of freshly washed hair. Whether it is from the power of suggestion, or just a coincidence, I also get the same kind of vibe from Incanto Shine.

This Bastard reporter traveled to Austin, Texas, to get the scoop on the new wind power project to bring much needed electricity to sprawling urban areas.

I met with Patrick Woodson, vice president of E.On Climate & Renewables North America, who had this to say:

“Ya know, folks think ‘bout the Dallas Cowboys and the Texas Longhorns and all the ‘Big Oil’ in these here Southern parts, but, in ‘round 10 ‘er so years, they’ll be stewin’ on the new ‘lectricity this here plan is gonna have for them. That orta put a bee in their bonnets!”

Not speaking ‘Texan’ myself, I simply tried to follow every other word and piece together a reasonable understanding of what he was saying.

I also wrote down the exact words used in this conversation to let you try as well.

If you are a Texan, it should be especially easy for you. If you are not, then your guess is as good as mine.

When I asked him what the plan is for this new concept for creating electricity, he gave me this answer:

“Well, ya see young man, we’s gonna take all them Congress folks, Demicrats an Publicans alike, long with all the other big wigs and the no count Presydent hisself, and put ‘em all on top those two hills.

Get the Demicrats and whatnots on one hilltop and the Publicans and their whatnots on the othern. Then, we gets them to start bickerin’ back an forth at ones nother ’ bout gay marriage or sums such, and they’ll power them big windmills out there.

Ain’t nothin’ more powerful than the wind comin’ out the mouth of the evil bunch from Worshington! Ain’t no winds blow any harder than what they’s a spewin’!”

When I asked what all this means for the sprawling urban public, he smiled, spit out some of his chewing tobacco, lifted his cowboy hat, scratched his scalp, and turned to look off into the distance for a short while, as he said, “Well….”

After nearly 10 minutes, when he finally turned back to face me, he completed his thought as such:

“I guess it means they’ll be a drawin’ ‘bout somewhere ‘round 18,000 of them there megeewatts. That’s a gonna light up 4 million ‘er so homes ‘round here, ya know? I think that’s a good thang, don’t you? Perty fancy ‘rithmetic, though. Perty fancy.”

“Shore is,” said Drew Thornley, a policy analyst for the organization, as he sat down next to Mr. Woodson.

“But, ya know what?,” Mr. Thornley continued, “The wind don’t blow an the sun don’t shine all the time! We’s gonna hafta still make use of natral reserces. We can’t has perfek weather all the time. Even in Texas!”

“But we sure got the purtiest bluebonnets ya ever did see,” added Mr. Woodson.

I thanked them both, borrowed a handkerchief from Mr. Woodson to wipe his tobacco spit off my shoe, and made my way to the airport.

All in all, this Bastard reporter is truly amazed that inbred southerners can be creative while mentally incompetent at the same time.

I know skincare is usually Jen’s territory, but with a deal as good as 50% off I just had to s

I know skincare is usually Jen's territory, but with a deal as good as 50% off I just had to seize my opening. Besides, great skin is truly the foundation to great makeup, so I think it's totally appropriate. If I'm not back next week I guess that means Jen doesn't agree ;)

One of the items in the Sun Care Kit I bought from Sephora was Cosmedicine's Medi-Matte Oil Control Lotion. I have oily skin that is blemish prone, and I'm getting older, so I want something that can keep my skin clear, balanced, and help fight some of the outside factors that contribute to aging. Since I was so happy with the Medi-Matte, I picked up a First Measures ll For Oily to Oily/Combination Skin set at Sephora and took it for a spin. I couldn't find the set on the Cosmedicine website, but it's currently only $24 at Sephora, so it's worth the jaunt to a store or a quick hop to Sephora.com.

The set contains 5 deluxe sample sized items: Healthy Cleanse Clarifying Cleanser & Toner-In-One, MegaDose Skin Fortifying Serum, Medi-Matte Oil Control Lotion (SPF 20), Opti-mologist Eye Cream with Light Diffusers, and Medi-morphosis Self Adjusting Exfoliator.

The Cleanser/Toner takes a little getting used to. Think of those hand soap pumps that dispense foam instead of just liquid soap and you've got an idea of what it's like. It was quite a change for someone used to thick creamy cleansers, and I was skeptical, but it cleared away my makeup and left my skin nice and clean. The light feeling is really nice once you get used to it, though the smell is rather unpleasant. At least I know they're not adding a bunch of unnecessary fragrances to their product, right? $35 for the full size product puts it well within the average price range, and once you stop overcompensating by pumping too much (guilty as charged) you'll see that it really goes a long way.

The Medi-morphosis exfoliator is a bit grittier than I'm used to, but it works since the particles are much smaller than usual as well. I was really impressed with the even distribution of particles as I massaged my face, since usually everything will bunch up in one spot or another. It was surprisingly gentle, and even sensitive skin would love it, though if you are used to a more aggressive exfoliator you may want to use it 3 times a week instead of 2. At $42 for a full size tube, I find this a little on the pricey size for an exfoliator.

I'm not usually a proponent of eye creams, but since none of the other included items fit the bill as something I'd want to smear on my eyes, I gave the Opti-mologist Eye Cream a shot. I was really worried that it would leave me with greasy, shiny eyes, but it was a great product for my skin type. Just enough moisture so my eyes didn't look crinkly, but it thoroughly absorbed quickly and left smooth skin that my concealer easily adhered to. $45 dollars for the tube is pretty average for an eye cream, but unless you really feel like you need the extra oomph, you could probably lose this product.

Next up, MegaDose Skin Fortifying Serum. At $80, this is the real make or break product. Treatments and serums cost more because we expect them to do more, and with discoveries in ingredients and nano delivery systems, there's no reason they shouldn't. One of the things I really appreciated about this line is that it really focuses on prevention rather than just treatment, and MegaDose is no exception. Packed with antioxidants like Pomegranate and Vitamin C, as well as Dimethicone, which helps keep nasty stuff out and moisture in, MegaDose is a solid skin protector with extracts to help boost collagen. The feel is initially something like a good primer, but after a few minutes it's absorbed and leaves a soft, smooth feeling. I appreciate that it isn't overly heavy or greasy feeling, and I honestly feel the Medi-Matte performed better over this serum than on its own. Again, the scent isn't great,but I'm willing to let that slide because it disappears quickly. The price is hefty, however, just a dab will do ya with this, and if you have the coin I recommend giving it a try.

The last product (and my favorite of the 5) is the Medi-Matte lotion. A thick feeling lotion, it can be smoothed on quite lightly and a pea sized amount will cover most of your face easily. It gives an extra layer of smoothing, and I've taken to skipping my primer altogether while I've been using this set. While my initial reaction to such a thick lotion would be to cringe and imagine zits aplenty later, this lotion proves that my immediate reaction isn't always correct. Even when my skin does start to get a bit of shine, the Medi-Matte helps to keep everything in place and my perfectly applied face doesn't slip off.

In my search for a new skincare regimen, this has been a delightful find. My skin feels a lot more balanced and the blemishes have been at a minimum. I felt like a little moisture was missing right when everything was applied, though my skin didn't end up overcompensating with oil production so it can't really be too bad. It was a pleasure to see a skincare line that realizes it's not necessary to dry out oily skin and I've really liked what these products have to offer. Also available are collections for normal and dry skin types, so don't feel left out if your skin isn't oily. If you have experience with the other collections than please let us know how you liked them!!

Don't forget! Cosmedicine just re-launched their web site and are offering a killer promotion. Enter COSLNH to get 50% off your purchase. One piece or twelve - the discount applies to your total purchase amount. It's limited time only though - just to promote the launch (expect it to last two weeks or so).

Ask your friends who Collective Soul is and you’ll probably get a blank stare, but hum one of their tunes and suddenly your friend’s eyes sparkle and they’re humming it with you. Considering how hugely popular they were in their heyday, I’m amazed at how many people my age are unfamiliar with the band at present. However, touring across Canada and the USA, and having American Idol winner David Cook choosing to sing their song ‘The World I Know’, is guaranteeing not only to bring 40-something yr old fans back, but hook a whole new generation of fan!

I saw Collective Soul in February 2008 at a local Casino venue and they were really good – great energy on stage by all the band members, a string of hit songs that were easy to sing along to – but although the crowd was appreciative, they never really got ‘wound up’. It seemed they were more into being entertained in comfort, than they were in participating in a rock show experience (probably due to the venue being all reserved seating and catering to the older crowd).

Collective Soul returned to Vancouver the other night, this time to the Commodore Ballroom; a venue with a bouncing dance floor that was packed to capacity two hours before the band came on stage! We sat (stood) through two opening acts, and the floor only became more jam packed in anticipation and suddenly Collective Soul hit the stage running; three guitar heavy hit songs in a row fired the audience up, boosting the adrenaline rush through the roof.

[caption id="attachment_35" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Singer Ed Roland - nightMair photography"][/caption]

Singer Ed Roland was on form to perfection – his voice was strong and melodic and he was obviously thrilled by the audience response and repaid our enthusiasm by giving back even more. A few softer songs and when the audience sang a few of the choruses he held out the microphone, all smiles as he listened to us sing. At one point he grabbed his blue acoustic guitar and it didn’t make any sound! Rather than panic as a lesser experienced musician might, he cracked a joke, handed it back to the guitar tech and they ripped into the next song without skipping a beat.
But we weren’t about to let them get away that easy! The ruckus that ensued ensured that the band had no choice but to come back for an encore. They performed four more songs, and finished the night in style. As they sang ‘Run’, they put down their instruments and left the stage one at a time until only Ed was left playing acoustic guitar, serenading them on their way and calming us down for the final farewell. A last wave from them all, the house lights come on, and a most incredible night was actually at an end.

“This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine.”

"This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine."

We've sung the song since we were kids, but are we living it? God wants our lights to shine (Matthew 5:16; Philippians 2:14-16). He expects us to be the twinkling stars that dance in the vast expanse of the inky black darkness. As sailors once charted their course to safe harbor by using the stars as beacons in the dark nights, we need to live in such a way that others can chart their course to heaven's harbor by following our light.

We are beacons when we reflect the light of Jesus to the world by walking in Christ's word so others can follow us to heaven.

However, we sometimes need help on a daily basis trying to figure out if our light is shining with our given choices. I want to share with you a series of questions you can ask to help you determine if you are a beacon.
