As a bow to the inexorable triumph of niche marketing, I've decided to change - or perhaps define - the focus of this blog. While I'll continue writing about homeschooling at thesecularhomeschool.com and all things political at cavaliermag.com, posts here will concentrate on technology, specifically the intersection of science fiction with reality.

We are living in the future, hence the trend in science fiction toward stories set in the extreme near-future, or even in the past, as in Spook Country. Consider: at this moment a 1/4" cable connects my house to the largest repository of information that has ever existed, most of which is mine to use for free. Using this essentially free tool, I can search for and purchase tickets on a jet that will take me anywhere in the world at five hundred miles per hour. Furthermore, I can take this entire wonderment and put it in my pocket. In fact, my (cheap! disposable! ubiquitous! miniature!) pocket two-way radio-music-video-camera-computer phone sports more processing power than the computers that fly the space shuttles. You remember them, right? That much-maligned rocket fleet our country maintains simply because - even at astronomical expense (ahem) - we can. If that isn't science fiction, I don't know what is.

We become inured, being human, to everyday miracles. Just twenty-five years ago the whole concept of paying for something without cash or checks was so exotic Heinlein devoted an entire scene - several pages - in Friday describing the mechanics of something I do ten times a day.

When Science Fiction tries to predict the future it generally fails spectacularly. It works much better as a tool for understanding the idea of progress itself, especially how it affects humanity; as a way to wrestle with issues that might come to be and explore possible outcomes before they become time-bound realities.

Occasionally, the writers get it right. What I intend to do here is document those moments when science fiction becomes reality, to examine the disparities between the imagined and the actual, and to preserve our ever diminishing sense of wonder.

Saturday i did the unthinkable. I went to a baseball game on the "holy day." I took a car ride down to SF to see my favorite baseball team the SF giants. They won 8-2. Tim Lincecum, my favorite pitcher was incredible. It was fun to watch him work on the field. Its funny how people make such a big deal about not doing anything that isn't praying or reading the Bible on the sabbath, but these people are some of the words most judgmental people i have ever seen within the doors of the church. I have gone through a crisis as of late with my church as it is the place that i identify with. It has accepted me for the most part. However i cannot feel guilted that because i go to a baseball game on the Sabbath i will be shunned. or that i should be by the church. Maybe its good to break the rules once in a while though. I dont really understand how in a school setting such as this, they expect us to not do anything on saturdays. Saturdays have become my day to catch up on sleep, just plain relax, catch up on homework, or even take a little bit of leasuire time for myself.

Maybe its sad, but thats how i've figured out how to get by in college.

Poor Ursula, a generation of Australians have been turned off her books by being forced to read The Left Hand of Darkness in high school...not that it's a bad book, but that it's a tough ask for teenagers to appreciate the themes and the skill.

I love her Earthsea series, both the original trilogy and the way it has continued to develop in the later books. This is a true classic in fantasy fiction, both for the character of Ged and the world of Earthsea itself.

She is also one of the few short story writers that I really enjoy (as well as Connie Willis, for different reasons); even if I don't personally find much resonance in a particular story, I can always admire the intent and craft behind it. I never really saw the point of literary-style short stories before reading Le Guin's, but she converted me.

Her protagonists, both male and female, are generally well-drawn and compelling. And there's one villain, Davidson in The Word for World is Forest, where I can only be grateful we didn't have to spend too much time in his head.

Le Guin is an elegant writer. That's about the highest praise I can give. Her new book is Lavinia, based around a character in the Aeneid. More information about her and her works can be found here.

SF Canada is the professional writers group for Canada, for speculative fiction (science fiction, fa

SF Canada is the professional writers group for Canada, for speculative fiction (science fiction, fantasy, horror, etc.) http://news.sfcanada.ca/ It is similar to but different from SFWA (Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America) which is the grand mal professional organization. SFWA has many more members and therefore money, clout and able to legally aid their members.

SF Canada allows membership to Canadian writers who have sold some works, but does not have as rigorous requirements as SFWA. Therefore, SFC represents Canadian speculative writers who may and may not yet have achieved a full professional status. It's also there to foster community and support, as well as to promote the publishing and sale of works by members. It's small, it's Canadian.

The board of directors, like most boards is volunteer run. I have become the president as of Saturday. It's not a lot of work but I'm hoping we can continue to foster community and bring more notice to our writers and our genre. We'll see how that shapes up but with the World Fantasy Convention in Calgary this year, it's a good opportunity to feature our local (Canadian) talent.

There has been discussion in the past that Canadian fiction of any genre has a different flavour than that of US authors. I don't know if it's true in speculative fiction but books have been written about how the landscape, in one way or another, features in many Canadian books and films. Perhaps there'll be a larger discussion of whether aliens created by Canadians are more Canadian than alien. We'll see.

Jouez hautbois etc.

By tego uniknąć, piszę ten tekst =]

Czas i miejsce akcji

Kraków, Szkoła Podstawowa nr 131, ul. Lubomirskiego 21. Od 13:45 1.05.2008 do 15:30 4.05.2008.

Informator

Ułatwiło by to, moim zdaniem, odnalezienie opisu konkretnego wydarzenia. Oprócz tego standardowa zmora każdego twórcy informatorów - literówki.
Format - przyzwoity.

Tuż przed 21 wpadliśmy do sali 24 [blok III], by poczekać na warsztaty kryptograficzne.

Pozostawia wiele do życzenia.

Do tego kolejna z rzędu dyskusja (jakież to wygodne - przyjść z paroma informacjami, a potem czekać, aż uczestnicy zaczną sami o wszystkim gadać, a my sobie spokojnie siedzimy). Mnie w udziale przypadli niebiescy - z bonusem do inicjatywy.

Niedziela

I znowu zdecydowałem się zacząć zabawę od 10. Wybrałem Zbrodnia i magia, czyli rzecz o truciznach, bo wydawało się to najciekawszą z proponowanych o 10 prelekcji (aczkolwiek kusiła magia teleportacyjna).

No cóż - może kiedyś te wszystkie dzieci dorosną...

Today Griffin and I played tour guide to some of his friends that are in town on vacation. We were ALL over the city. Picked them up at Nob Hill where they were staying and headed to the Castro. This area is always a fun destination but we didn't see as many strange people as usual. Then we drove down to Haight/Ashbury (crossing this one off the SF To-Do List) to walk around a bit. I'd never been before so it was kinda fun, although I don't feel a strong need to hurry back anytime soon. Had lunch at Asqew, a place that serves mainly skewers, it was pretty good for a quick meal. There were several crepe places we passed by but didn't stop, so now I'm having hardcore cravings for a dessert crepe. Yum. One of the more famous "chains" is Squat and Gobble that has several locations in the city. Their menu looks AMAZING. We're talking "Almond Peach" crepes with peaches, almonds, brown sugar and cinnamon. Mmmmm.... (salivating).

In the Haight we also went to the Kidrobot store, a new experience for me, but not for Griffin. I don't really know how to describe the store, but it only sells little toy figurines geared towards our age group. Strange but oddly likable. There are many different "collections" of figurines and each of these figurines are sold in unmarked boxes. You purchase a box from the collection but you don't know which figurine you get until you open the box after you buy it. Griffin got an Adult Swim item and ended up getting Robot Chicken. He really wanted was Ignignkt & Err from Aqua Teen Hunger Force (a show I despise). I was kinda tempted to get a box from this collection, I thought they would make a good desktop item, but I resisted the urge and decided I really didn't need one.

After checking out the Haight we came back to our place for a while, got some coffee at Farley's and then headed out to dinner in the Nob Hill area. I found an Indonesian restaurant on Yelp (another one of my favorite websites). It was really delicious, chalk another one up to a great Yelp find. It was the Borobudur Restaurant specializing in authentic Indonesian food. Seeing how I've never eaten Indonesian food before in my life I can't really comment on it's authenticity but I can comment on how delicious it was. My appetizer and main dish were amazing. The appetizer was "Roti Prata," a pan fried bread with curry dipping sauce. This was NOT a healthy option, but so doughy and delicious. I'm sure the fact that I've been on a low-carb diet recently contributed to it's deliciousness. My entree was a noodle dish served with chicken and fried chicken wontons, the noodles didn't have a sauce but were so deliciously seasoned somehow. Although this restaurant is not convenient to get to from our place, I definitely want to go again. It was fairly reasonably priced as well, $7-12 per entree.

Some good sights from today (or at least the ones I got pictures of):

REI has a tiny parking lot (like most places in the city) and there was a line to park with two employees directing traffic this afternoon. Wow.

Speaking of REI, they didn't have the color Keen's I wanted (only had bright blue and bright red) in store so I'm going to get some through their website. It was nice to try them on in store to make sure of the size I wanted. Wohoo for a 20% off coupon. However, they are on backorder so who knows how long I'll have to wait for them... :(

DPT officers get a bad rap. Everyone seems to despise them, yet they are a crucial element necessary to help all of us to effectively share our City streets.

Here are a few of the ways they make our lives better:

Parking meter enforcement: You think it's hard enough to find parking now? Without meter enforcement you would never be able find a place to park in the City's high demand commercial corridors.

Neighborhood permit enforcement: If you work out of town, where do you park your car after work? In your neighborhood. Without neighborhood permitting you would never find a space. Enforcement is key.

Transit revenue: Have you ever taken a bus in the City? A great deal of revenue for our public transit system comes from DPT parking fines. This is good.

Curbed wheels: It's not just a joke to squeeze money from you, parked cars without curbed wheels can and do injure people.

Sidewalk blocking: Nobody wants to live in a city where anyone can park their car anywhere they please. Blocking sidewalks is rude to most pedestrians and a major challenge for the mobility impaired.

Frankly, most complaints about DPT tickets include silly disclaimers, such as, "I just double parked for just a second... I didn't feed the meter, but I was just going in for a coffee... I know there was street cleaning, but..." We receive significantly below market cost parking on our City streets. The least people can do is follow simple rules to share our limited parking resources.

So, dear reader, please shake the hand of the next DPT officer you see and say, "Thank you."

Sunday was a busy day in the City, Monday was busy enough as usual, but Tuesday early morning was dead. It was very difficult to get orders and I was afraid I would go home with less than $100 take-home -- something I haven't done in a long time. I was preparing myself for a $60 Tuesday.

But, thanks to some great tipping, I eeked out $115 on Tuesday.

I picked up a radio call in the Marina late Tuesday morning. It was a nice midwestern family heading to the airport from one of the many Lombard Street hotels.

I like families in the cab. The vancabs are great too -- plenty of room for their luggage in the back and room to stretch out so the kids don't start hitting or yelling at each other for violations of the unwritten personal space rules.

This family was heading back to their Pennsylvanian home after a nice vacation in San Francisco.

We talked about the City. We talked about the busses -- they really liked SF's Muni system which is, I'll admit, one of the better systems in the US. We talked about American's flight to the suburbs and whether or not we're going to see a flight back downtown. The dad and I had heard and enjoyed the same great Morning Edition stories a month back highlighting these issues.

We talked about Philadelphia's downtown resurgence. We talked about life goals, career tracks, the pleasures of not having a boss, my work on a website and past and future travels.

They were a fun crew. The dad gave me $60 for the $40 fare and I thanked him profusely. That is a very nice tip.

I picked up frequently from the St. Francis Hospital at Pine and Hyde, as they use our cab company as their primary taxi vendor.

I picked up an older lady returning home to the Marina. She was a bit hard of hearing, but that didn't stop us from chatting about what life was like as a cab driver. She was very frustrated to have had a number of cab drivers that didn't speak adequate English, at least per her standards. We discussed why this may be the case -- for example, potential income from cab driving is decreasing. Keep in mind, income is decreasing not just in real terms (as many jobs do from inflation) but in nominal terms: not only are my dollars earned worth less because of inflation, but I increasingly earn less dollars in the first place because of the increase in gas and gate fees. Unless cab driving pays better, it won't be able to keep as many native English or native San Franciscans in the profession as they'll be able to get higher paying jobs elsewhere.

She tipped me very well - $15 on an $8 fare. She said she wanted to "keep me in business."

Thanks lady, you and the airport family went a long way to making my Tuesday income bearable.

I am actively working to practice safer driving.

I picked up a mom and her kid Monday from a swanky North Beach preschool. I took them back to their home across town near Duboce Park. I stopped at the first hint of yellow lights and maintained the average road speed (instead of above average as usual). The difference in reaching our destination would have been 1 or 2 minutes at most. Her tip was as great.

Clearly, the risk of fast cab driving is not worth the reward. But, it's still difficult to fight that instinct to go as fast as possible. Dear readers, tip safe-driving cabbies well and complement them verbally on safe driving to encourage this behavior.

On breaks and eating during my shift: a lot of friends ask me how I go to the bathroom, where I eat, and how I manage to take breaks.

Since I only drive 3 shift per week, I try to maximize my driving during those 33 hours. I take brief combined breaks for bathroom and eating.

I seek out places with clean restrooms, parking and fast food service. In the City where parking is limited, Starbucks, McDonalds and the CalTrain station are shining stars. At each of these places I can park, order, go pee and come out with a small snack and tea or coffee.

I don't eat much during the shifts, usually one medium meal (a McDonald's breakfast) and one snack (a muffin or bagel). I'll have at most one coffee but lately I've been sticking to a black tea or two. I'll relax and eat a large meal after my shift. It's a good feeling to pig out after a long day.

I picked up a French mother and son pair from their SOMA hotel and took them toward Haight and Ashbury. They weren't really sure what to see in the City, so we chatted a bit about the Haight and Golden Gate Park.

Even though my French is laughable, the Frenchies always seem to enjoy my meager efforts. Whether out of pity or graciousness they tip well when I bust out the French. I'll keep doing so.

Most cab companies in the City use a rather old fashioned technology to dispatch call-in orders from customers -- a two-way radio.

For the cab drivers, the radios operate half-duplex. Cab drivers can either listen or receive, but not both at the same time. Dispatchers can send and receive simultaneously.

As far as I understand, this means there are 2 distinct channels - a high-power broadcast channel from the cab dispatch garage and a second channel used by each cab to broadcast back, usually at a lower-power, to the garage.

These technological considerations are important as it greatly affects cab dispatch workflow.

The overall flow and operation of the dispatch radio varies considerably from shift to shift and dispatcher to dispatcher. Dispatching is a complex and challenging task, perhaps akin to the difficulties of being an air traffic control operator with considerably less pay.

'Normal' operation consists of the dispatcher reading out intersections of calls 'on the board', that is, orders called-in (pre-arranged or recently called) waiting to be picked up. "Polk and Green, Lombard and Van Ness, Pine Hyde, St. Marys, 1st and Market, 6th and Brannan van cab." These are read very quickly and repeated until a cabbie checks in for an order.

If a driver is in range, he or she will pick up the mic and broadcast back their intersection by saying, "Cab 730 at Bush and Leavenworth." The dispatcher will respond with, "730 check, and who else?" giving the others a few seconds to check-in for the order as well. The closest driver is given the address, "730, you have 900 Hyde for Susan."

Significant complexity is introduced as there is no specifically defined range for an appropriate check-in distance. It requires a learned fine-tuning by cab drivers and dispatchers depending primarily on the number of empty company cabs listening for orders. When the City is very busy, most cabs are full and are not monitoring the radio. The dispatcher's board fills up quickly with orders and it's acceptable to check-in within a half mile or so of an order. It is fun and easy to be a cab driver at these times.

But, in the wee hours of the morning most cabs are empty and no orders are on the board. The instant an order is read aloud there are 10-15 (or more) drivers checking in for the order. Competition is tough -- you can be only a few blocks away from an order to have a chance of picking it up.

I'm most amazed at the effectiveness of this system despite its use of rather antiquated technology. Sure, there are occasional frustrating moments of waiting, such as when a cabbie needs a call-out (if an address is incorrect or nobody answers when after ringing a bell) when the dispatcher is busy assigning other orders. But, the majority of the time the system works well. Often it is just as quick and efficient (or more so) compared to computer-based GPS dispatching systems.

I also enjoy how the personality of each dispatcher in our company is expressed in their manner of dispatching. Some dispatchers give out orders very quickly. Others want drivers to be much closer to orders. Some are more like robots -- repeating orders on the board quickly and monotonously. Others make it more like an auction, complete with an auctioneer's trademark closing, "Going once, going twice, cab 730 has it."

Radio dispatch adds a fun spice in the mix of the already exciting cab driving world.

I'm still trying to find the best balance between being openly accepting of whatever comes my way, but still feeling my emotions as I drive the cab.

I don't want to let a slow day and low earnings get me down. But, I also don't want to be completely emotionally disconnected from the outside world's goings on. It's a delicate balance to fully feel and recognize my emotions without letting them consume me to direct my mood.

Perhaps I'm attempting the impossible? I wish to feel sad without feeling sad?

My story, "Ice Queen" is one of the twelve stories in this anthology and has received a favorable review. The cover if well designed. Norilana seems to be a fairly new publisher, at least to the speculatitve genre, but they're doing some nice looking books, both anthologies and novels. I'm looking forward to receiving my copy.

So, that symposium, then. I thought it was, on balance, quite fun. (For a take from someone better read in sf criticism than me, see this post; and for photos, see here.) At times it struggled a little to address both of its audiences (the Gresham symposium regulars, who seemed to account for about a third of the audience, and the knowledgeable sf fans and critics, who must have been another third) equally, and the Chair was perhaps more enthusiastic than knowledgeable; but there was good stuff in there. These are brief notes, since eventually the full transcripts and possibly even audio will be available on the Gresham college website; I trust that there were enough people now reading this in attendance that we can go into more detail in the comments.

The conceit of Neal Stephenson's keynote address was to imagine what a xeno-ethnologist would make of our culture, and his conclusion was: it no longer makes sense to talk about "mainstream" versus "genre". He described this split, between acceptable culture and a number of debased genres, as the "standard model", and argued that it may have been accurate half a century or more ago, but was no longer relevant. However, he also defined his terms very carefully: not only did he specify that he was talking about speculative fiction rather than science fiction, he made it clear that he was using the widest possible definition of speculative fiction, to include, for example, "new historical fiction" like 300 (and presumably also The Baroque Cycle). He used "mundane" to describe all non-sf.

Sf, he argued, is unique among genres in that it has grown but remained separate. Westerns largely died (contemporary examples are all exceptional in some way, not part of a living genre; romance has become ubiquitous in film; crime has become a dominant narrative form on tv. Sf has become too common and too successful to be realistically described as a genre -- hence his very broad definition of the term -- but has not been absorbed in the way that romance and crime have. It remains a separate stream in our culture.

A xeno-ethnologist, he suggested, would see a "bifurcated culture", with speculative on one side and mundane on the other. Evidence for this bifurcation: the redefinition of bestseller lists in, eg, the New York Times, to include only the types of books that the compilers of bestseller lists think should be on there (eg relegating Potter to YA); and the careers of actors such as Sigourney Weaver and Hugo Weaving, who have respectable success as actors but disproportionate fame among speculative audience relative to mundane audiences. He proposed that the unifying factor among actors achieving this sort of success was their ability to "project intelligence"; that intelligence (practical or intellectual or some other kind) was the key to identifying these characters. At this point it became clear that better terms for the split he was trying to describe would be between geeky and not, rather than speculative than not. His attempt to explain that split was, I thought, actually quite sophisticated. He argued that, in the everyday world, intelligence is not exceptional -- though it comes in many forms -- but that a lot of mundane fiction does not actually reflect this. In a complex world, the split is between art that encourages vegging out and that which encourages geeking out, and the latter is the stuff that has become the speculative stream of our culture. (Remember how broad his definition of speculative is: I strongly suspect he would attempt to claim, say, HBO shows, and certainly something like The West Wing.) The satisfaction of sf, he argued, was that its characters are not dumb, ie they act like we think real people would. (I leave you to decide how much "real people" is being defined as "people like Neal Stephenson", although he was at pains, as I said, to point out that there are many kinds of intelligence.) He wrapped up with some rather strawman and largely unproductive attacks on academia as a factor behind this split, suggesting that the post-structuralist, post-modern principles of English teaching breed a sort of lack of confidence in writing about anything other than subjective personal experience.

There's further discussion of Stephenson's talk here and (second-hand) here.

Andy Sawyer's presentation on the overlap between science fiction and other genres was, I hope he will not be offended by me saying, more aimed at the Gresham regulars than at the fans. It was a galloping survey of the various attempts to define sf, from Aldiss to Suvin and others, with the underlying argument that sf is never a pure genre, that it is always part something else. (Citing Paul Kincaid's family-resemblance approach from "On the Origins of Science Fiction" as part support.) Useful points made: classification is always a form of ideological argument; and "science fiction" can sometimes be considered as a verb, something that happens in texts when certain elements are introduced. He also proposed a starting point for genre of 1827 (ie a century before Gernsback) on the grounds of a novel by Jane Webb called The Mummy! which responded directly to Mary Shelley's The Last Man. He also pointed out that magazines for most other kinds of category fiction existed before Amazing, and suggested that perhaps this was a mark of the limitations of sf as a category, and that it might more usefully be thought of as a way of thinking.

John Clute talked about Horror motifs in science fiction, via a detailed reading of the dystopian novel City of Endless Night by Milo Hastings (1919). He started from the idea that science fiction (or "the argued fantastic") and horror are largely opposed: "rationalising horror [i.e. what sf does] is to tolerate it". Vampires explained can be scary, but not horrific. What, then, he asked, can survive of horror in an sf setting? Another way of framing the question is to ask what genres can let us see (as long as, he said, we remember that they are tools for seeing but not the thing seen itself). Horror, he suggested, is a way of wrestling with amnesia, and in particular can be a way of wrestling with the amnesia of society: it is about forcing us to remember or to recognise. (Building on a distinction he's talked about before.) This sort of horror can be seen in dystopias, in "Hitler Wins" stories, in apocalypse stories and -- he suggested -- in a lot of near-future science fiction written after 2000. Examples given: The Carhullan Army by Sarah Hall; HARM by Brian Aldiss; The Luminous Depths by David Herter; Against the Day by Thomas Pynchon; The Book of Dave by Will Self; Pattern Recognition by William Gibson; The Road by Cormac McCarthy; and Super-Cannes by JG Ballard. One notable thing about this list: only two of its number have been published as genre. He also described this cluster as "cenotaph fiction" (a description, incidentally, I suspect could be applied to Mary Doria Russell's latest novel, which I am currently reading).

Next up was Martin Willis, talking about Science fiction in the nineteenth century. I think this presentation was probably not as bad as it seemed at the time, but was not helped by the structure: the whole first half was generalities about the period and about what "the critics" say about it, which looked particularly bad coming immediately after Clute's close reading, and such that it sounded like he was arguing against a straw man even if it wasn't entirely. I think, actually, a lot of what he said was pushing hard at an open door. His main argument, for example, was that sf critics do not pay enough attention to nineteenth-century science fiction (it didn't help his case that, when he did get around to talking about examples, he included Poe and Shelley; although in talking about, eg, mesmerism as a science in sf he made me think again about Scarlett Thomas' The End of Mr Y as an heir to this tradition). Separately, he argued that critics do not pay enough attention to the way that science functions in science fiction (something I am very sympathetic to, and indeed something I liked about Joanna Russ' reviews as collected in The Country You Have Never Seen); and he also argued that too often science in science fiction is the work of individuals, not recognised as a social enterprise, or "a vibrant set of political and social cultures" (another idea I'm sympathetic to).

Last but not least was Roger Luckhurst, talking about Modern British Science Fiction, and he very nearly got through the whole talk without mentioning a contemporary science fiction novel by a British writer. Instead he talked about three different implications of modern: modernity, meaning a philosophically and scientifically enlightened society as we have had for the past few hundred years (in theory); modernisation, meaning the technological and ecological consequences of the industrial revolution and urbanisation; and modernism, meaning the literary movement at the start of the twentieth century. Sf, he argued (and I gather here that he was paraphrasing his own book), is a literature of modernity and modernisation but has an ambivalent relationship, at best, with modernism. I have to say that I enjoy Luckhurst's approach -- he always brings in a lot of context, in the form of biographical and historical information -- even when I don't agree with it. When he did get to contemporary sf, he came back to the idea of a "post-genre fantastic" (which, weirdly, he first attributed to "a science fiction critic", only later naming the source as Gary Wolfe), and pointed to writers such as Chabon and Lethem (not British, note) as moving between and across genres. His British exemplar text was Justina Robson's Keeping it Real, and to be fair he made it sound wonderful, talking of the Quantum Bomb as a generic bomb, and of the way in which the story literally makes the logics of sf and fantasy and horror inseparable; if I hadn't read the book and didn't know that structurally it's a complete mess, I would certainly be rushing out to buy a copy. He offered two reasons for why this increasing free-ness across genres might be happening: one, that there has been a shift in our understanding of what counts as "culture" (the very shift, in fact, that Stephenson was objecting to, although Luckhurst said he doesn't care for the term "post-modern"); and two, our relationship to science and technology is changing; we no longer have even the illusion that science can be held separate from society.

I should also note that the symposium ended with a panel discussion, which was mostly not very edifying, although the all-male nature of the faculty was challenged (the response was to acknowledge that yes, in this day and age the panel was not a representative sample of people who research sf); and one woman asked "what it would take for there to be a strong female character in sf that men could identify with"; Farah Mendlesohn provided some data from her survey of children's reading habits -- and therefore changing audience demographics -- as a partial answer, and Caroline Mullan pointed out that the answer could just be Buffy. Then there was a drinks reception, and a dinner, both of which were filled with good company and conversation; and now I have to go to work.
