GIS SOLUTIONS

1Tech Solutions has complete in-house cadastral mapping capability, with a staff of eight full-time, experienced technicians dedicated to cadastral mapping and cadastral GIS base map creation.
Our staff is experienced in all aspects of cadastral conversion, ranging from straight CAD digitizing to full COGO assembly and topological GIS database creation. Production rates range from 400 to 3000 parcels per week, depending on the type of construction and processing involved. A procedural plan describing the project tasks, responsibilities, data sources, deliverables, and QC procedures is developed and provided to the client for approval. Mapping of a selected small pilot area is also typically performed and submitted to the client to verify the procedures and deliverables.

While many other firms have abandoned cadastral services, Global solutions remains committed to our clients who require increasingly accurate property maps.

The need for accurate digital property maps is perhaps more important than ever. Cadastral maps provide the foundation for subsequent mapping projects to meet the needs of many crucial public services including tax assessment, E9-1-1 and emergency management, public works, and Homeland Security Planning. Kimball can provide services, both on and off-site, such as custom parcel maintenance and GIS hosting.

Global solutions professional cadastral mapping team, GIS analysts, and project managers will provide custom solutions that meet our client’s needs.

During my training sessions with non-profits I have noticed that many are not taking advantage of the new web analytics being offered by YouTube. I wanted to write about what you can measure using YouTube Insight, provide tips for improving your YouTube channel, and highlight a few non-profits that I think are doing a great job with their channel.

I think it's important to know how any marketing initiative is performing, so if you haven't already, I would encourage you to log into YouTube Insight to see how many people are looking at your YouTube videos. I will show you information such as:

how many people have viewed your video over a specific time period

Where those viewers come from by demographic and geographic location.

how people are finding your videos (web search, YouTube search, link from your website. etc…)

Tips for Improving your YouTube Channel:

Once you've taken a look at your numbers, here are a few quick tips to help you increase the traffic to your videos:

Make your account name the name of your non-profit, not something cute that no one will search on.

Use the profile section to describe your non-profit using words from your keyword list.

Link back to your website in the website field

When you upload video content - make sure your video's file name has descriptive words in it. Ditto with the title and tags.

Add a donation button

Link to you YouTube account from your other social media profiles and your website

Upload your YouTube videos into Facebook (your personal profile or your group profile) and take advantage of the fact that it's currently the largest video sharing site.

Non-Profits that have Good YouTube Channels

Here are a few non-profits that I think are doing a good job optimizing their YouTube Channel and branding it to look like their non-profit:

The Green Children
Greenpeace

Defenders of Wildlife

Montgomery Bay Aquarium - I especially like that they are encouraging visitors to upload their own video.

And this last channel is pure brilliance - the channel uses keywords and the organization is marketing it to their demographic - men tend to go online to watch funny videos. You seriously have to watch this video about self examination for testicular cancer. It got picked up by YouTube on “Trend Spotting Tuesdays” and received over 600,000 hits in it’s first 24-hour period.

Non-Profits YouTube Channels with Potential

And here are some suggestions for non-profits that are doing a decent job but could tweak a few things and do even better:

Amnesty International - they could do a better job incorporating their keyword research, start using tags, and label the titles of their videos with frequently searched keywords.

"Systemic racism is a form of racism that's entrenched in institutions. Some argue that it's the primary cause for intractable problems in the African-American community that range from substandard public schools to disproportionate rates of imprisonment, she says.

Electing a black president does not mean that America is ready to take on systemic racism" - Andra Gillespie | an assistant professor at Emory University's political science department

-----------------------------------------------------------------

By Stephanie E. Myers, Co-Chair, Obama Unity Network

Why would CNN feature a headline story July 22, 2008, on their website suggesting that an Obama presidency could hurt Black Americans on the eve of their series about Black America? Are they trying to scare Black Americans with such a negative article? Why in the world would CNN characterize an Obama victory as a bad thing for Black Americans--one of his core constituencies?

Let us examine the premise that Obama's victory will somehow close opportunities for other Blacks. Did Jackie Robinson hurt opportunities for Black Americans in Sports? Did Dr. Charles Drew hurt opportunities for Blacks in Medicine? Is a Tiger Woods harming opportunity for Blacks in golf? Has Kenneth Chennault's success at American Express closed doors on Wall Street for Black people? The answers are no, no and no--each one of these historic breakthroughs has led to more and expanded opportunities for Black Americans--not fewer as suggested by the CNN article.

Any claim that Barack Obama's success will harm Black Americans is an example of the dichotomy that is presented when Black Americans achieve and break barriers. The article suggests that Obama's victory could cause white Americans to "ignore entrenched racial divisions while claiming that America has reached the racial Promised Land." Such a claim is ridiculous in light of the fact that President Obama would be Commander in Chief and head of the federal government and in a powerful position to remedy on-going racial divisions from the top of the government--not from the bottom as has historically been the case. Reaching the Promised Land is a good thing for Black Americans--not a bad thing as the article featured on CNN suggests.

Clearly, some Black spokesmen will be paid and encouraged to oppose Barack Obama's success but, I am confident that his success will mark a new beginning for Black progress on a global and national level. I believe business opportunities for minorities will be improved; educational opportunities for underserved youth will be expanded; fair access to capital will be expanded; the criminal justice system will be brought under control; minorities will gain access to innovation and technology opportunities; our troops will come home and federal government programs will be administered with fairness and opportunity.

Will Barack Obama's presidency be an Open Door to the Promised Land? I hope so.

Background - the following story was published by John Blake of CNN yesterday:

"We had a dream. Now it's a reality."

That's the slogan on a popular T-shirt linking Sen. Barack Obama's presidential run to the Rev. Martin Luther King's dream of racial equality. It's one of several T-shirts -- including "Barack is my homeboy"-- that reflect African-Americans' euphoria over Obama's White House bid.

But there are others who warn that an Obama presidency could hurt African-Americans. They say an Obama victory could cause white Americans to ignore entrenched racial divisions while claiming that America has reached the racial Promised Land.

Paul Street, author of the forthcoming book "Barack Obama and the Future of American Politics," says Obama risks becoming an Oval Office version of talk-show host Oprah Winfrey. She and former Secretary of State Colin Powell are African-American figures whose popularity allows some white Americans to congratulate themselves for not being racist, he says

"They're cited as proof that racism is no longer a significant barrier to black advancement and interracial equality," Street said.

"This isn't new. Go to the 19th century, and Southern aristocrats would point to a certain African-American landowner who was doing well to prove that whites are not racist."

Nick Shapiro, an Obama spokesman, says Obama believes that America has made tremendous progress in the past 50 years. iReport.com: Biggest challenges for black America

"However, the suggestion that somehow Senator Obama's campaign represents an easy shortcut is not realistic," Shapiro said in a statement. "Senator Obama believes that we still have a lot of work to do, and that's not just true for the issues facing blacks or Latinos, but for women and other communities struggling to secure the basic necessities in life like jobs, housing, health care and quality education."

Are we a post-racial society?

Any suggestion that an Obama presidential victory could set back race relations may seem odd or even inappropriate. His presidential campaign has been framed by many observers as a glowing example of America's move to a "post-racial" society.

"Racial polarization used to be a dominating force in our politics, but we're now a different, and better, country," Paul Krugman, a New York Times columnist, wrote last month about Obama's political rise.

The reaction in the African-American community to Obama's success has also been celebrated with joy.

When Obama became the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee in June, many African-Americans cried because they said they never thought they would live to see such a day. Vendors soon started selling T-shirts of Obama's portrait pasted alongside King in Walgreens stores and at online stores.

Yet there are a few political commentators who warn African-Americans that an Obama victory could be twisted to suppress the push for racial equality. Most of these commentators are African-American, but they also include white, Latino and conservative pundits.

These commentators say that there is a subliminal appeal to Obama's presidential candidacy that has been ignored. Obama doesn't just represent change; he represents atonement for America's ugly racial past for others, they say.

Steve Sailer, a columnist for The American Conservative magazine, wrote last year that some whites who support Obama aren't driven primarily by a desire for change.

They want something else Obama offers them: "White Guilt Repellent," he wrote.

"So many whites want to be able to say, 'I'm not one of them, those bad whites. ... Hey, I voted for a black guy for president,' " Sailer wrote.

Sailer cited another reason why many whites want Obama as president:

"They hope that when a black finally moves into the White House, it will prove to African-Americans, once and for all, that white animus isn't the cause of their troubles. All blacks have to do is to act like President Obama - and their problems will be over."

Glen Ford, executive editor of the online journal blackagendareport.com, offered some white Americans a free solution to the race problem: "Millions of whites came to believe Obama could solve the 'race problem' by his mere presence, at no cost to their own notions of skin privilege," Ford wrote in an essay in January.

Other African-American commentators say the "post-racial" tag attached to Obama could be used to dismiss legitimate black grievances.

Andra Gillespie, an assistant professor at Emory University's political science department, says Obama's success doesn't mean America has become a post-racial society. She says it may signal the decline of individual racism but not another form of discrimination: systemic racism.

"It doesn't mean that there aren't prejudiced people anymore," she said.

Systemic racism is a form of racism that's entrenched in institutions. Some argue that it's the primary cause for intractable problems in the African-American community that range from substandard public schools to disproportionate rates of imprisonment, she says.

Electing a black president does not mean that America is ready to take on systemic racism, Gillespie says.

"A rising tide doesn't lift all boats," Gillespie said. "Just because [Obama] gets elected doesn't mean the lives of poor black people are automatically going to improve."

It could actually get worse for poor African-Americans, she says.

"People could say if Barack [Obama] can succeed and someone can't get off of the stoops in the hood, it's their fault, and it has nothing to do with systemic racism," Gillespie said.

D. Yobachi Boswell, a blogger for Black Perspective.net, wrote in January that the prospect of an Obama victory was making African-Americans politically passive.

He wrote that too many African-Americans were "doping ourselves up on the euphoric opium" of a black president while forgetting that "we need fundamental change, not just Negroes in high places."

Boswell says he's concerned that an Obama presidency would discourage African-Americans from keeping leaders accountable.

"We can't give [Obama] a pass because he's black," Boswell said. "We just can't have a black face in a high place. We have to have people fighting for policies that actually help us."

Obama has responded to such criticisms before. In his "A More Perfect Union" speech in March, he dismissed claims that his candidacy was fueled by the desire "to purchase racial reconciliation on the cheap."

He acknowledged that racial disparities in education and wealth continued to exist and were linked to the legacy of Jim Crow and slavery.

"I have never been so naive as to believe that we can get beyond our racial divisions in a single election cycle, or with a single candidacy, particularly a candidacy as imperfect as my own," Obama said during that speech.

A black backlash against Obama?

Despite what Obama has said, his presidency could provoke a black backlash because the expectations are so high, others say.

African-Americans who would expect a President Obama to be a vigorous advocate for their cause may be disappointed by Obama's approach to race if he becomes president, some say.

Author Street says Obama may be a symbol of bold racial change but he is personally cautious about race. A President Obama won't want to appear to favor blacks, because he might lose political support if he appears as the "angry black man" in the White House.

Street says Obama understands that risk and has run as a "race-neutral" candidate who talks about racial oppression as something largely confined to the past.

"Barack plays a very active role in damping down race consciousness," Street said. "Race neutrality is one of the great characteristics of his campaign."

African-Americans may also be disappointed by an Obama presidency because they may have forgotten what Obama is: a politician, says David Sirota, author of "The Uprising," a book that examines how populist movements in America shape public policy changes.

"He's like any politician. He's cautious," Sirota said. "He's a potential vehicle for change, and I think he is a good vehicle, but he is just a vehicle."

His presidency may represent fundamental change, but that doesn't mean he will initiate such sweeping changes if he's elected.

"Politicians, even the best-intentioned ones, are weather vanes," Sirota said. "If the wind isn't blowing in the right direction, they will perpetuate the status quo."

It will take more than a presidential candidate to change the status quo; it'll take a movement, Sirota says.

"My concern is that people will think that by simply electing Obama, change will come, whether it's on race or economic justice issues," he said.

"If people believe that, then real change will not happen."

We're excited to announce the recent consolidation of divisions and name change within our organization.

In keeping in line with industry trends and satisfying our clients' needs, we have taken steps to diversify our product suite. We've added Search Engine Marketing, including Search Engine Optimization and Pay-Per-Click, Website Design/Development and Email Marketing services to our existing offerings for National White and Yellow Pages advertising for print directories and the Internet.

In doing so, we've realized the added benefit of bringing our division together with our parent company, Academy Communications, Inc., to more effectively promote and market our organization as one entity, instead of two. For the past twelve years each brand has worked independently and we're looking with great anticipation toward the future. Moving forward, Academy Communications, Inc. and its Worldwide Media Group division will be united as Academy Media Group!

We will continue to utilize our key resources, our employees, capitalizing on their strengths. We will "marry" the two divisions and their respective service offerings to now include traditional media such as Radio, Television, Outdoor, Direct Mail and Promotions, in addition to the Search Engine Marketing, Web Design/Development, Email Marketing and the Yellow Pages services mentioned above. This will allow us to work together more effectively, bringing you, and our customers, a total solutions service provider.

Dave Reske (NowSpeed Inc.) & Jennifer Brady (uMass)

76% of advertisers use organic SEO and 71% use ppc advertising

85% of all internet sessions involve a search engine

Why is SEO/SEM vitally important to higher ed marketing?

Cost to generate one lead is averating $55 CPL in our industry (some paying $100 CPL)

This means to generate an average of 2,000 leads per month, it would cost $11,000 per month - or $1.3 million and up annually

Search provides opportunity to engage with the prospective student from point of first interest aka "the search" (rather than waiting until they get in touch later in the funnel)

Organic SEO

The actual search results (rather than sponsored top or right bar)

Google has 50.8% of market share; yahoo has 24%, MSN 8.4%, AOL 6.1%, Ask 2.1%

Goals: increase search engine rank on selected keywords; increase overall traffic to the site.

Spiders index everything (not pictures

Listings appear beneath paid results, ranking cannot be controlled

Free

natural ranking is based on the quality and quantity of relevant site data indexed and the number of quality inbound links to the site

Results displayed based on a match between the search terms used

SEO Steps to Good Rankings

Keywords: High traffic, low competition, good fit for business

i.e. don't rely on Catholic if you are a Catholic college - too much competition

Content: must be relevant to search term and contain quality information

Page Elements: body copy, title tag, meta keywords, meta Description, Alt Tag - make these all what search engines want to see

Link popularity: directory submissions, press releases, blogging, article submissions

Make it easy to crawl: clean HTML, no "black hat" techniques (can get you blacklisted)

Keyword Strategy:

Start with a wide universe of keywords

Select keywords with the right combination of low competition and high traffic

select keywords that are relevant to your site and to your business

Broke site into sections (i.e. title tag) and made sure keywords were mentioned within each section

Embed keywords in outgoing content - press releases etc. You get a link, and keywords!

measure by visibility score and organic search traffic

KPIs

Visibility Score, Traffic, Link popularity

Visibility of keywords by search engine

You can get a lot of this data from google adwords reporting - can see exactly which keywords are getting clicks etc - mmbc

Paid Search

At the top/side

Google has 74% market share of paid search marketing. Yahoo! 19%, MSN 6%

Placement: Determined by CTR and how much you bid - you can't just bid your way to the top

Cost: bidding for a spot, bid for position against others buying the same terms; you pay $0.01 more than the next highest bid

Some thoughts on AdWords: find a lot of keywords have a required minimum bid unlike facebook. These are crazy high - $8, $12 - but you end up paying much less. Have to raise the bid to the high amount or Google simply won't activate your keyword - mmbc

Google

Search Network & Content Network (1000's of extra websites were Google places ads - if your search word appears in the text of that website or gmail message than your ad will be displayed, can target by site, time of day, geography, age)

You control the budget, demographics, keywords - everthing

Adgroup - groups of keywords (100's of 1000's keywords at no cost)

Paid Search campaigns

Build comprehensive keyword list

Create Adword groups for similar words

Select offers

Best landing page practices

Clear headline and compelling copy

picture of the offer

minimal navigation

appealing image

Example:

Made a very specific, page - took CPL from $300 to $40.

Then did custom pages for each degree and certificate program - took CPL to $22.74

battery is dead!

Search engine success starts with SEO copywriting. It's the most cost-effective marketing tool around. You'll see a clear and rapid return on your investment in the shape of higher search engine rankings and more website traffic.

For REAL immediacy, of course, there's Pay-Per-Click (PPC) advertising. Whether this counts as SEO copywriting is a moot point, although PPC does rely heavily for its success on good keyword selection that relates to tightly configured AdGroups, well-optimised landing pages and keyword-focused small ads.

It hardly matters, but PPC is firmly rooted in the search engine marketing (SEM) stable. For purists who see SEO copywriting solely as a way to achieve higher website rankings, we have to be talking about optimised website copy, complete with appropriate keywords, meta tags and smooth, semantic syntax!

Other link-building tools which also draw on SEO copywriting skills include online PR and article marketing although, in this context, their SEO uses are focused on improving a website's search engine rankings.

For businesses looking to generate sales and qualified leads in the most straightforward and cost-effective way, SEO copywriting and the improvements it can make in organic search engine ranking make it an essential secret weapon in any marketer's armoury.

A bit of debate going on between SEO compatriots. Just how much of a difference do certain inbound links make to a search engine ranking? Well it depends on a variety of factors, but there is some debate on whether (in the UK) a .ac.uk domain is "worth more to Google" than say your average .com or .co.uk.

.com and .co.uk addresses can be bought for a few dollars, whilst an educational or governmental domain cannot be just bought from your average registrar. As a result, search engines like Google place great merit on a link that comes out from such a domain. As a result (and opinions vary), an outbound link from an educational domain may well produce a higher ranking (by a factor of 10 according to some estimates) than that coming from a regular .com style domain. This is because a link from such a site is considered reputable and to have some significant credibility. Suddenly having a bit of real estate on a .ac.uk domain becomes an interesting proposition.

What does this mean for Blackhatters? Well - I can see an increased amount of persuasion by SEO specialists of .ac.uk domain participants to somehow link back to their own domains. As the participant in a number of .ac.uk domains (with the right to create content on public space on University web sites), I can imagine that subtle pressure will be applied to get me to endorse commercial propositions through linking. The same will apply to civil servants (some of whom earn the minimum wage), medical staff and other publicly funded employees with access to public web space.

I can see what people are trying to achieve, but there are significant numbers of people with access to space who do not realise the consequences of this. And when it starts to affects rankings between competitors, I imagine that a lot of whistle-blowing will occur. Someone fairly innocent is going to get a kicking.

The use of forms from SEM imaging is prolific in today’s architectural schools and in cutting edge built structures. Dr Swanson’s seminar on his work using SEM and taxonomy emphasizes to me that these images are not just pretty forms to be copied into large scale architectural structures. Through taxonomy; the capturing, identifying and study of microscopic forms enlightens us of a whole new world. With only 2/3 of all species categorized, our knowledge of what is possible can still grow. This is not to find forms not yet conceived, but to understand how these forms work: the movement of a spider’s knee, the cutting barbs of a sand fly, the formation of a spider’s web. The now possible three dimensional images with the understanding of why these shapes exist, can lead to meaningful architecture.
