1 Lewis Hamilton 1:31:20.874
2 Nelsinho Piquet +5.5 secs
3 Felipe Massa +9.3 secs
4 Nick Heidfeld +9.8 secs
5 Heikki Kovalainen +12.4 secs
6 Kimi Räikkönen +14.4 secs
7 Robert Kubica +22.6 secs
8 Sebastian Vettel +33.2 secs
9 Jarno Trulli +37.1 secs
10 Nico Rosberg +37.6 secs
11 Fernando Alonso +38.6 secs
12 Sebastien Bourdais +39.1 secs
13 David Coulthard +54.9 secs
14 Kazuki Nakajima +60.0 secs
15 Adrian Sutil +69.4 secs

I thought that I had spotted some value in the winning margin market. Bet365 are offering Evens that the winning margin in Sunday’s race will be greater than six seconds. The average winning margin around Magny-Cours in the last ten years is 9.97 seconds. In those ten races the winning margin has been greater than six seconds no less than eight times. Have Bet365 made a gaffe?

Possibly not, as the one thing that I am afraid of is a Ferrari one-two. Since Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa became teammates they have shared six one-two finishes; none of which have seen a gap between them of more than six seconds.

The only way I would get involved in this market now is if for any reason I thought that a one-two was unlikely – namely if it was raining (which slightly increases the average winning margin too).

This got me looking at the other markets and my eye was drawn to SkyBet’s ‘Without the Big Six’ market. This is an outright market that excludes Raikkonen, Massa, Hamilton, Kovalainen, Kubica and Heidfeld. Following his impressive qualifying session Fernando Alonso is an odd-on shot. Is this right?

Magny-Cours is of course a home race for Renault. How much pressure were they under to mask their performance in qualifying with a light fuel load? The logical comparison would be Fernando Alonso’s home grand prix in Spain. There, a stellar qualifying performance saw him qualify second on the grid, but his true race pace had him pegged in sixth and falling into the clutches of Mark Webber (+1.7 seconds) before his untimely engine failure.

Lets look at the seven races so far this season and who has won the race without the big six:

2 x Win – Mark Webber
2 x Win – Jarno Trulli
1 x Win – David Coulthard
1 x Win – Fernando Alonso
1 x Win – Nico Rosberg

Interestingly Red Bull have been best-of-the-rest in three out of the last four races. In Turkey where Fernando Alonso took this accolade it was again Mark Webber who followed him home. We have already got David Coulthard covered with a points finish, but at 13/2 Mark Webber must be worth a shot with each-way terms available for those that are inclined.

Elsewhere an uneventful start to the Canadian GP has seen the average lap of the first retirement in 2008 jump up to 2.86 laps. Magny-Cours is a circuit where another clean start is possible: the average lap for the first retirement in the last ten years is a mammoth 10.5 laps. Bet365 are offering 6/4 that the first retirement will come during the second lap or later. This looks a value price to me, but beware that the last three races here at Magny-Cours have seen early retirements.

Nelson Piquet Jnr. has failed to complete five out of the seven races this season. He raced at Magny-Cours four times in GP2 and didn’t trouble the chequered-flag twice. Despite this he can be laid at odds-on to be classified in Sunday’s main feature. Well I certainly wouldn’t be backer.

Finally, there is some 4/5 available on Betfair that we won’t see the Safety Car deployed. With one outing here in the last ten years that would appear to be value, but with the FIA speculating that there could be thunderstorms during race-day (they predicted heavy rain for Saturday that failed to materialise) I am happy to pass it over. If it is still available at 2pm local time and there is blue sky above Nevers then I may reassess.

Whatever you fancy for tomorrow, good luck! If you spot any value anywhere or simply have a strong inclination for an outcome then please post in the comments.

Here is the betting data sheet for the forthcoming French Grand Prix. The key difference between this race and the last one in Canada, has to be the scarcity of the Safety Car. It is also interesting to note the mastery that David Coulthard held over one lap of this circuit for the five years between 1998 and 2002.

Lewis Hamilton is odds-on for victory following his highly impressive qualifying performance at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. As I type, he is currently trading at around 1.64 – 1.65 on Betfair and at that price I feel that he has to be opposed. There is no doubt about his ability to wring a lap from his McLaren around here, but all of the press reaction subsequent to qualifying has been about his ‘dominance’ over the other drivers and I think that this, in part, is responsible for such an unattractively short price.

Hamilton qualified six-tenths of a second faster than Kubica and nearly a second quicker than the nearest Ferrari. I believe that this, to some degree, has to be fuel-related. Martin Brundle remarked in ITV commentary that teams were expecting to have problems with the soft-compound Bridgestone tyre in the race and that it would only be viable for use in the latter stages once the track had rubbered-in. We know from Turkey that Hamilton can have problems with the softer tyre’s wear and on that occasion McLaren chose to switch him to a three-stop strategy to minimise the impact. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the same thing again here in Canada.

Throw in the possibility of inclement weather, the track breaking up, the inevitable safety car periods, the crazy safety car pit lane rules and the groundhogs; there is no way I would want to be backing the Brit at that price.

After missing out on a big-priced points finish for Kazuki Nakajima in Monaco I don’t want to make the same mistake again. Full reasons here, but in short his qualifying performance doesn’t seem to hamper his ability to get his Williams in to the points. There is plenty of 5/2 available and possibly bigger on the exchanges.

Finally, I am going to take a punt on Sebastian Vettel steering his Toro Rosso in to the points from a pit-lane start. The pit lane exit in Montreal feeds out into the exit of turn two so hopefully he will be able to miss any first corner carnage. From there he will still need to negotiate his way through the pack, but a) Montreal is a circuit where passing is possible and b) I have already predicted that there will be a large number of retirements, potentially making his job easier.

The main rationale behind this bet though is that there remains a possibility of rain. Last time out in Monaco, Vettel managed to secure a fifth place finish in the extremely tricky conditions. This comes on the back of a fourth place finish in the rain in China and a supremely strong drive in the wet in Japan last year. 4/1 is currently available on the exchanges; the 120/1 for a podium is perhaps just stretching it a little!

Oh dear. Poor Sutil. Pranged from behind in the Monaco GP held around the streets of Monte Carlo. Hit by the flying Finn forgetting Ferrari has poor grip on cold tyres. Forgetting that tyres cool down during safety car periods - especially when it's wet. C'mon Kimi, we expect better from you than that!

Well done to Adrian Sutil though, a great race. You've just had your Alesi moment... (the one that got Alesi his reputation, when after being overtaken by Senna he immediately took Senna back at the next corner, thus ensuring nobody ever questioned Alesi's driving skills from that moment on - rightly or wrongly). People will notice you now. Your career can only go up from here!

Well done Hamilton too, despite your self-inflicted early puncture. Coming back to earth a bit after last year are we? About time. Nice win though; shame about the safety car when you had a 40 second lead...

1 Lewis Hamilton 2:00:42.742
2 Robert Kubica +3.0 secs
3 Felipe Massa +4.8 secs
4 Mark Webber +19.2 secs
5 Sebastian Vettel +24.6 secs
6 Rubens Barrichello +28.4 secs
7 Kazuki Nakajima +30.1 secs
8 Heikki Kovalainen +33.1 secs
12 Timo Glock +1 Lap

Ordine d'arrivo:
1 Kimi Räikkönen 1:38:19.051
2 Felipe Massa +3.2 secs
3 Lewis Hamilton +4.1 secs
4 Robert Kubica +5.6 secs
5 Mark Webber +35.9 secs
6 Jenson Button +53.0 secs
7 Kazuki Nakajima +58.2 secs
8 Jarno Trulli +59.4 secs
9 Nick Heidfeld +63.0 secs
10 Giancarlo Fisichella +1 Lap

A versenyzők érdekeit képviselő GPDA tárgyalásokat kezdeményez a Formula-1 versenyigazgatójával Charlie Whiting-gal a Safety Car szabályok esetleges módosításáról.

Hátránya: plusz költség a több szervízes alkalmazása. Különösen a mai költésgcsökkentésre irányuló intézkedések közepette.

It is difficult to draw conclusions from so little data, particularly when the 2008 season is yet to properly bed-down. It does however look like a circuit where one driver can dominate the entire weekend; the pole-sitter is sure to be odds-on come Sunday. SportingBet have some interested related-contingency bets (Pole/Win and Win/Fastest Lap), but I haven't calculated what kind of margin they are working to yet.

Nico Rosberg's Fastest Lap stands out on that sheet and is a reminder of a great weekend for the German. Having tasted success here in the past in GP2 and with a podium under his belt already this season, he is a driver that I will be watching closely throughout the weekend.

More thoughts to follow through the weekend...

Beleza, fiz reserva do vôo pra São Paulo, fiz a mala e me mandei rumo a minha cidade natal.

O Martin me salvaria a pele várias vezes durante a temporada, aplicando sensatez onda a FIA costumava demonstrar falta da mesma.

That’s right: 28th of March 1993 was the day I had my Formula 1 Grand Prix debut in Interlagos

That’s right: 28th of March 1993 was the day I had my Formula 1 Grand Prix debut in Interlagos... as a nofficially FIA sanctioned journalist. And what a great memory that race would provide for many years to come. It still gives me goose bumps to remember the roar of the crowd as Ayrton Senna won at his home track – for the last time.

In those days I lived in Germany and having enjoyed writing for a couple of magazines, mainly testing road and race cars as well as season previews for all sorts of championships, I had made up my mind that my old pal Nelson Piquet and former Formula Ford 2000 grid mate Ayrton Senna would probably be happy to concede exclusive interviews. Nelson had smashed his feet in Indianapolis, mind you, and wasn’t talking to the media at all. And Ayrton went about to establish his businesses away from motor racing. Good stuff, I guessed.

Having already “sold” the story to a German sports publication, I checked with the FIA media accreditation bureau in Paris and a lovely lady, I think her name was Sally, would allow me to do my first work on a single race accreditation but commiting mytself to send them a copy afterwards. Deal done, I booked a flight to São Paulo and on my way I was to my debut as a Formula 1 journalist. Arriving in Guarulhos International Airport early Friday morning I took a taxi to the Transamérica Hotel, where the FIA runs the accreditation center for decades now, only to find out that no-one knew anything about my media pass. And no-one seemed interested to check what had gone wrong. Turns out it was only the beginning of my hardships with the FIA media office. But I’ll tell you more about that one some other day.

While I was contemplating what to do now, I bumped into Willy Weber and Harry Hawelka, Schuey’s manager and Benetton's health guru. They gave me and another friend of Michael’s a lift to the race track and once we arrived at the gate you were supposed to show your FIA pass. The other three guys showed the correct passes, I held up the Air Miles card of the carrier I flew in with... and it worked! Once I was at the outer paddock aerea I stopped each and every single person I knew, journalists, photographers, team members at the gate. Each delivered a little note at Martin Whitaker’s desk in the media center. At the time Martin was FIA’s on-site Media Officer and once he got flooded badly enough with those little stick-on memos, he came down to the gate to find out who the hell Mario Bauer was.

It didn’t take long for Martin to come back with an FIA media pass, apparently forfeited by another journalist, and handed it out without much ceremony. Martin would become my guardian angel throughout the year, applying common sense whenever the FIA seemed to lack any of it. Anyway, my first professional commitment in Formula 1 had begun and the first thing I learnt was that the March F1 team was now definitely out of business. They had made it to the opening round in Kyalami, but were somewhat short of money to pay for the Ilmor engines and as a consequence they withdrew from the World Championship. After Brabham, Pacific and Bravo, March became the latest victim of the recession.

The Williams-Renaults of Alain Prost and Damon Hill seemed – as in the opening round in South Africa - unbeatable and duly filled the front row with the Frenchman on pole. Behind the two V10 powered blue-yellow missiles were the fastest Ford V8s, Ayrton Senna (McLaren-Ford) and Michael Schumacher (Benetton-Ford) in row two, Michael Andretti (McLaren-Ford) and Riccardo Patrese (Benetton-Ford). JJ Lehto's Sauber, Jean Alesi's Ferrari, Karl Wendlinger's Sauber and Mark Blundell's Ligier-Renault lined up behind those.

Senna got away with a perfect start, squeezed past Hill into the first corner and tried to keep up with Prost. Further back Andretti and Berger collided, both crashing into the outer wall with the McLaren flying over the Ferrari. Prost was opening up a gap and Senna was doing his best to keep Hill behind. On lap 11 the Brazilian had to give way and was now third ahead of Schumacher. But a 10-second stop-go penalty for overtaking under yellow flags seemed to be the end of all of Senna’s hopes.

But then a massive downpour flooded the main straight and a surprised Aguri Suzuki and fellow countryman Ukyo Katayama both lost control of their cars crashing into the pit wall. Senna came in to switch to rain tires and only after that he stopped for his penalty. Chaos broke out in the pits, Schumacher’s car fell off its jack. Back marker Christian Fittipaldi and leader Alain Prost, about to lap the young Brazilian, both didn’t hear their crews’ call to come in and so first Christian spun over the brow of the first corner and then a surprised Alain slid helplessly into the stalled Minardi. A historic moment, as the new F1 Safety Car was sent out for the first time ever. A confusing moment, too, as Alesi overtook a number of cars behind the SC. Which is not allowed, Jean!

The Team Lotus was spot on to bring in Johnny Herbert very soon after the re-start in order to switch back to slicks, same for Alex Zanardi. Senna meanwhile had the public roaring as he went into the lead past Hill under braking into Ferradura on the still wet track and the Brit, on his way to his first ever podium, seemed content with what seemed within reach for him in his only fourth Formula 1 Grand Prix. Alesi, penalized for his antics behind the Safety Car, and Schumacher were summoned to the pits for stop-go penalties but the German still grabbed 3rd place away from Herbert who finished 4th ahead of Blundell and Zanardi.

That didn’t matter much to the Brazilian fans as carnival broke out on the grandstands and a massive track invasion meant the post race party began right there on the back stretch as Ayrton scores yet another home win and McLaren's 100th GP victory.

I have to admit that I have been lining this up for a while and when I saw that 6/5 was available about a no show I was delighted. Sepang is a huge wide track with incredibly generous gravel traps and run-off areas. Even in the event of a multi-car smash the resulting debris is usually well clear of the racing line and can be dealt with under waved-yellows. This is borne out by the fact that there has been no safety car in Malaysia for six years.

There are two things that have prevented me from placing this bet though. Firstly, there is the number of incidents last week that are in part being attributed to the new rules. In truth I am not overly concerned about this, believing that safety car appearances are much more related to individual tracks rather than the drivers or cars, however it is playing on my mind.

Secondly, and far more crucially, is the weather. All reports and forecasts that I have read are predicting rain. This clearly heightens the chance of incidents and critically the potential for incidents to occur in unusual places. Last time we saw a Safety Car here in 2001 it was as a direct result of the inclement conditions. Here is the quote from the official FIA race comments:

Lap 4: With the track deluged by rain many drivers spin off. Villeneuve, Bernoldi, Montoya and Nick Heidfeld all go off and are not able to continue. Both Trulli and Coulthard spin and Barrichello has a second off. A Safety Car is despatched and the race placed under caution.

Weather.com are predicting a 60% chance of precipitation on race day. That is enough for me to decide to keep my powder dry. If come the time of the race, the threat of rain has retreated completely and the 6/5 is still available, then I will probably look to get involved.

Nothing immediately leaps out at me in the same way as at Melbourne: perhaps a lay of the safety car or a buy of winning margin?

Until last year we had usually seen a fairly high attrition rate. Will the trend carry over from the first race in Melbourne, or will the drivers all be a bit more cautious? Certainly some of the early retirees in Australia are ruing the missed chance to pick up some points.

Check back later in the week for some more detailed analysis.

[por Rubén] Primera carrera de la temporada. Tan esperada, como accidentada. Sólo ocho supervivientes. Sobresaltos, salidas, accidentes e incluso roturas.
