eBay insect fossil is new species

The fossil was bought for just £20

A scientist who bought a fossilized insect on the web auction site eBay for £20 has discovered that it belongs to a previously unknown species of aphid.

Dr Richard Harrington, vice-president of the UK's Royal Entomological Society, bought the fossil from an individual in Lithuania.

He then sent it off to an aphid expert in Denmark, who confirmed the insect was a new species, now extinct.

The bug has been named Mindarus harringtoni after the scientist.

"I was interested to see what it was because I've worked with a team of people involved in monitoring and forecasting aphids, those of greenfly and their relatives in this country," Dr Harrington told.

"I looked at it with my team and we thought we could identify it down to the level of genus, but we had no idea what the species was."

Dr Harrington sent the specimen to Professor Ole Heie, a fossil aphid expert in Denmark.

"He discovered that it was something that hadn't been described before," Dr Harrington explained.

The insect itself is 3-4mm long and is encased in a 40-50 million-year-old piece of amber about the size of a small pill.

"I had thought it would be rather nice to call it Mindarus ebayi," said Dr Harrington.

"Unfortunately using flippant names to describe new species is rather frowned upon these days."

Instead, Professor Heie named the new species after Dr Harrington.

"It's not uncommon to find insects in amber... but I'm not sure that one has turned up on eBay that has been undiscovered before. It's a rather unusual route to come by [a new species]," the researcher, based at Rothamsted Research in Hertfordshire, explained.

He said the insect would have fed on a tree called Pinetes succinifer which is itself now long since extinct.

I peter 2:9 but you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; 10 who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy.

Yes, the 'Deadman, 'The Phenom,' 'The Undertaker' returns to the WWE brand, 'Smackdown,' after being suspended by WWE Smackdown General Manager, Vickie Guerrero, over a month ago. The 'Undertaker' officially made his return to the WWE at last Sunday night's WWE PPV event, "Summerslam,' where he defeated WWE superstar 'Edge,' in a 'Hell in a Cell' match.

The match, itself, was brutal and well-fought by both men and in the end, despite repeated attacks by 'Edge,' including using ladders and other weapons to subdue the 'Undertaker,' the 'Undertaker' came out with the victory.

So, the 'rebirth' of the 'Undertaker''s career has begun and we will see the former World Heavyweight and 'Royal Rumble' winner in action, on the next edition of WWE's 'Friday Night Smackdown,' when he will make his plans for his return known to the whole world.

Potter film release date delayed

The release date for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince has been pushed back by eight months, to July 2009.

The sixth installment of the teenage wizard's adventures was supposed to have its Royal premiere on 17 November.

Alan Horn, president of studio Warner Bros, said the decision was taken to guarantee the studio a major summer blockbuster in 2009.

He also blamed the Hollywood writers' strike, which hit the film industry hard earlier this year.

Mr Horn said the strike, which ended in February, had "impacted the readiness of scripts for other films."

Fantasy books

He said: "The picture is completely, absolutely, 100% on schedule, on time. There were no delays.

"I've seen the movie. It is fabulous. We would have been perfectly able to have it out in November."

The move will mean a two-year delay between the film adaptations of books five and six in JK Rowling's fantasy series.

But it will shorten fans' wait between Half-Blood Prince and the final two installments of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, which are being shot simultaneously next year.

It is thought actors Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson - who is celebrating getting straight As in her A Levels in English literature, geography and art - will reprise their roles.

The release date for part one is tentatively set for November 2010.

Royal performance

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince had been chosen for this year's Royal Film Performance, on 17 November.

Last year's performance was canceled amid controversy about the chosen movie, Brick Lane.

It was the first time the annual gala - held in aid of the Cinema and Television Benevolent Fund (CTBF) - had been scrapped since 1958.

CTBF chief executive Peter Hore told the News he was "very disappointed" with the decision to shelve the Potter premiere.

But he was hopeful a Royal premiere would still go ahead this year.

He said: "The Royal Film Performance has been around for a long time and has a tradition of showcasing the best films. We are confident we will be able to do that again this year."

Mr Hore added that he expected to make an announcement shortly.

An independent investigation is underway into radiation treatments for cancer patients at the RAH amid concerns that some were not getting an adequate dose for two years.

A check originally identified 720 patients who had been affected but further checks of hospital records have revealed another 114.

SA Health chief executive Tony Sherbon, said the independent review panel had already completed all of its field work, including interviews with staff and the checking of records.

"The review panel will now also look at these additional patients,'' Dr Sherbon said. (news)

Historia

El Banco Santander procede de la fusión realizada entre el Banco Santander, y el Banco Central Hispano (BCH) en el año 1999. A su vez el Banco Central Hispano se formó en 1991 por la fusión del Central y el Hispanoamericano. Hasta agosto de 2007, su denominación social era Banco Santander Central Hispano, más conocido por sus iniciales, BSCH. El día 13 de ese mismo mes, se cambió dicha denominación por la actual de Banco Santander.

La Eclair Cake original es una receta riquísima que se hace con una masa finita tipo pionono. En USA la hacen más simple reemplazando la masa por galletitas Graham, que son finitas tipo biscuits.Esa receta me la pasó mi nueva amiga virtual Diana Endrek que es hermana de esta otra Endrek, chicas muy talentosas! La adapté con ingredientes comunes en Argentina:

Ingredientes

- 4 paquetes ( aprox 450 gr) de galletitas Lincoln de chocolate

Relleno

- 1 paquete grande ( de 8 porciones) de postre Royal

- 1 litro de leche

Crema chantilly

- 1 pote de crema grande ( 500 gr)

- 2 tazas de azúcar

- Esencia de vainilla

Cobertura

- 100 gr de chocolate en barra para taza

- 50 gr de manteca

- 3 cucharadas de azúcar

- 4 cucharadas de leche

Preparar el postre Royal como indica el envase. Dejar enfriar muy bien.

Preparar la crema chantilly que quede bien consistente.

Para la cobertura: derretir el chocolate en baño María o microondas ( en este caso calentar de a 30 seg y revolver, ojo que no se queme!). Agregar la manteca derretida, el azúcar y la leche y mezclar. Reservar.

Cubrir la base de una fuente con una capa de galletitas, cubrir con el postre Royal frío, agregar otra de galletitas, luego la crema chantilly, agregar una última capa de galletas y cubrir todo con el chocolate.

LLevar a heladera 4 hs y disfrutar sin remordimientos, el lunes empezamos la dieta!!
