ATMA charm gets you everywhere

The French artist ATMA, living and working in East London, oozes charm and charisma. His art ranges from abstract painting, portraits and graffiti to music and Indian head massage. He says ’there is no difference between my approach to painting, music and massage. It is all art”.

My first encounter with Matt, ATMA, was at a cocktail reception for the unveiling of his mural work of Gilbert & George at the Cafe1001, the Truman Brewery in London E1.

Upon my arrival at the reception, Cafe1001 was packed with the ‘happening crowd’ in their skinny jeans and airs of importance. I was welcomed by Mat, this charming handsome artist wearing a suit and a killer smile. He looked more like an established gentleman artist than a street artist who paints on walls. His attentiveness to his guests struck me as so generous in a part of London, where charm is generally absent and perceived as ‘un cool’.

ATMA, Gilbert & George

The mural work in itself is large with bold colours covering the entire wall. ATMA captures his sitters self confidence in a typical pose. With subjects such as Gilbert & George, it sure attracted a crowd.

For many years, the artists Gilbert & George lived and worked in this part of London. Though, historically, East London was more associated with social immigrants and less with art. Now, E1 has metamorphosed into the home of bohemian art. It is the new ‘happening’ London attracting many visitors seeking the latest street art and hoping to discover the next Damien Hirst.

Cafe1001 commissioned ATMA to create a work of importance for their space. They discussed the idea of painting some known personality from the area and Matt suggested Gilbert & George. At that stage, Matt did not know the artist couple personally. But twice lucky, chance meetings walking in the street, has obtained their consent for the work and secured their attendance at the unveiling reception.

Gilbert & George

I asked myself that evening, how did such a young artist as Matt get to do such an important piece of work. My own experience with speaking to the couple Gilbert and George has confirmed to me what I suspected. Their energy was frigid, unwelcoming and rather self important.
Perhaps, my prejudiced opinion will be challenged by ‘With Gilbert and George’, a film about to be screened during the coming 22nd BFI film festival. It traces their journey from their early years to their 2007 retrospective at the Tate Modern.

My prize that evening was meeting an artist of our future, ATMA. It is often the case, one meets people who are busy with great works of our times, and one does not realize at that instance. ATMA’s work is specific in style and has its own signature. The work is from the heart and full of sensitivity and generosity towards the subject. He says ‘I seek to bring the soul of the sitter’ in his work.

Could that moment have been the instance where I met ATMA, the iconic artist of our generation!! Only time will tell.

Edwar Steichen. In High Fashion

"Make Vogue a Louvre"

THE LOOK, Brett, Agua Dulce Canyon, California, USA, 2002

Also nicht kopflastig ?

Was muss von ihnen ausgehen?

An was für Projekten arbeitest Du zurzeit?

Was will ich mehr?

On December 13th, Roubi L'Roubi is hosting an evening of baroque music and champagne. The concert will feature soprano Anna-Maria Rincon, Laurence Cummings and Adrian Butterfield of the London Handel Orchestra and Rachel Brown on flute. Also on the programme are flautist Jane Gilbert and poet Deanna Moss.

What is now an annual event started quite by chance four years ago. Roubi was having a conversation with soprano Claire Rutter and baritone George Mosley about his father’s love for opera. This resulted in a recital for Roubi’s father’s 70th birthday, which was held at Roubi's Kensington house with an audience of about twenty people and so Roubi 's salon was born.

After the success of the first event, Roubi began organising recitals each season with performers drawn from his circle of professional musician friends. Guests were invited to attend and all proceeds were donated to charities like UNICEF and the NSPCC.

This year the highlight of the concert is Anna-Maria Rincon. Roubi describes her as "the most amazing soprano" with a "wonderful voice". This will be the first year the concert is not performed in Roubi's home as he recently sold his house and moved to separate studio and living premises in the City of London. Although it is being held in a church, Roubi is intent on recreating the intimacy of a salon.

At the time of our interview, Roubi was about to start designing the dresses for Anna-Maria Rincon and Rachel Brown. His source of inspiration is a book by Professor Aileen Ribeiro entitled "Dress in 18th Century Europe"
in which he had come across a mention of 'Spitalfields silk'. As Roubi's new studio is now a stone's throw away from Spitalfields market, he wanted to try and establish a connection between the old and the new, so it is highly likely the dresses will be made from silk fabric. But as to the actual design - "It's very difficult to say what it's going to look like – it just evolves."

As Roubi talks about this connection between the historical and modern Spitalfields, I am struck by how much his life is about connection – connecting with people, connecting people with each other, and most importantly for him, "the whole connection between music and haute couture design is magical – it just works."

"I find Baroque music fascinating," he says. "At that time music was all about power, propaganda and control, especially in the French courts."

What Roubi loves about the music is the "strictness" of it. In the same way, his clothes are structured, made to measure and custom-fitted with extreme attention to detail and finish. Just as each piece of music is unique, so are Roubi's garments, with no two gowns the same. He may deviate a little in his designs, but essentially he prefers "the classic approach". In the same way that we appreciate themes in music and repeated refrains, so "people like something familiar, something that's welcoming in clothes design," he says.

"Fashion and music are both worlds that fascinate people. This concert represents a collaboration between the two." With people coming from as far as Switzerland and Morocco to attend the concert, the evening presents "amazing networking possibilities".

Roubi sums it up perfectly when he says, "Music brings different people together."

Like many musicians in this country, Jane Gilbert has to earn a living doing something other than mu

Like many musicians in this country, Jane Gilbert has to earn a living doing something other than music. By day she works as an insurance broker, where she specialises in kidnapping for ransom insurance.

She is also a fine cook and enjoys trout fishing in the summer where she has a rod on the river Test. "Fish out of the river tastes better than anything in the world," she enthuses. Her penchant for fast cars has seen her clock 141mph in a Porche GT3 RS at a racing circuit track day, an experience she describes as "totally exhilarating".

So it comes as somewhat of a surprise to discover that in-between her job and numerous activities, Gilbert has also been busy as a flautist, having played 20 concerts this year, including five in Argentina and one in France. Her first concert for 2008 will be on 15th January in Chichester Cathedral. "It's a mad life," she laughs when I describe her life as balanced.

Gilbert comes from a musical family – her father played the saxophone and her mother sang. She started playing the piano when she was five and by the age of ten she knew that she wanted to be a musician. She was 15 when she started playing the flute. At that stage she "really wanted to learn the violin". At school, when the time came to choose instruments, Gilbert picked up a flute and played a tune. A teacher who overheard her said, "You better learn that," and so her career as a flautist was born.

After school she studied flute and piano at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. Although she describes the flute as "a completely wonderful instrument", Gilbert is unsentimental in her description of flute playing. "It's all about getting the right noise....you can have pure noises and coarse noises... you've got to get your fingers and lips to move at the right time."

In fact it was only several decades later that Gilbert was finally able to realise her dream of playing the violin. She started taking lessons recently, and describes herself as being "in the nursery" stage of learning. "It is a big thrill when you get something right."

Jane Gilbert's association with Roubi L'Roubi has a happy beginning – Roubi helped design her wedding dress over six years ago and since then she's had "loads of clothes" made by him. As a flautist, "it is very important that clothes are not restricting in any way," as this could affect arm movement and more importantly, breathing.

For Roubi L'Roubi's concert on 13th December, Gilbert has chosen two pieces: Debussy's Syrinx and Pan by Leonardo De Lorenzo. The first, written in 1913 and originally called "Flûte de Pan", was the first unaccompanied flute solo piece of the 20th century. Debussy renamed it after the myth of the nymph Syrinx who is chased by Pan and transformed into hollow reeds when she asks the water nymphs for help. When Pan reaches the reeds the breath from his sigh of frustration makes a haunting sound. Charmed by the sweet sound, Pan cut some of the reeds and so the pan pipes were born. Gilbert describes the piece as possessing "dream-like sumptuousness".

The second piece, Leonardo De Lorenzo's Pan was composed in 1930. It is a very short piece, "almost without form" and was written to commemorate the archaeological discovery of ancient pan pipes in Greece in 1929 and Cairo in 1930.

Asked if the pieces represent a challenge to her in any way, Gilbert chuckles and says the challenge is "to learn to play them nicely".

For more details about the concert and how to make a reservation, visit our coming events page for December.

Laurence Cummings is a very busy man. Musical Director of the London Handel Festival and the Tilford Bach Society, he is also the Head of Historical Performance at the Royal Academy of Music, a conductor and a harpsichord player. This week he is conducting the ENO's production of Monteverdi's last opera, The Coronation of Poppea, at the London Coliseum. And on Monday 12th November he is conducting the London Handel Orchestra in a concert entitled 'Tune your Harps' at St George's Church in Hanover Square, in association with Roubi L'Roubi.

Cummings' association with the London Handel Orchestra dates back eighteen years. "My first job out of college was playing with Denys Darlow, the founder of the London Handel Festival." Since then he has shared the role as Joint Musical Director before taking over as Musical Director from Denys Darlow in 2002. As Musical Director he is in charge of programming for the festival and any out of season concerts.

At the 'Tune your Harps' concert, Cummings will be playing the harpsichord as well as conducting. "I may be a man, but I know how to multi-task" he jokes. "As a conductor you need to have all your musical tools sharpened... My role is to energise, enthuse and inspire. The conductor leads the rehearsal process, is an innovator and an inspiration. The harpsichord provides the harmonic engine of the performance...and through that I am able to mould the performance through my playing."

As the conductor, it is also Cummings' role to cast the singers, and to work on the interpretation of the pieces with them beforehand. The duets from Esther are "very beautiful indeed". Christopher Ainslie, countertenor, is the winner of the Michael Oliver Prize in the 2007 Handel Singing Competition. One of the purposes behind The Handel Singing Competition is to "enable young performers to value what is special about singing Handel." Carolyn Sampson is an internationally renowned soprano. "I am thrilled to be working with her."

One thing that is absolutely apparent during our telephone interview is Cummings' passion for Handel. "I think Handel understands the human condition so well. He paints mood and expression so well through music and text. He has created the perfect aria for every mood. Because of that, you feel he really understands us."

Cummings attributes his musical talent to his grandmother, a self-taught pianist who played in picture-houses and a dance band. As a boy he always sang in the parish church choir before becoming interested in the organ and church music until he was in his early 20s. While an organ scholar at Christ Church, Oxford, he became fascinated by the music of the 17th and 18th centuries and started playing the harpsichord.

Cummings will be wearing suit and tails designed by Roubi L'Roubi at the concert. As a conductor and performer, it is necessary to have extra arm room in the jacket without ruining the line. Another factor that had to be taken into account in the design was how much lining to use in the suit, as Cummings did not want to "overheat". "It was Roubi's idea to go for a period look and an Edwardian cut, with high-waisted trousers." What is immediately apparent about the suit is the "fine tailoring".

Monday's concert will be followed by dinner at Claridge’s and a fashion show of Roubi L'Roubi's latest evening collection. Also on the agenda is an auction. Along with Christopher Ainslie, Cummings has put himself up for auction. The winner of the auction will receive a private recital by Cummings and Ainslie. This is something Cummings enjoys. "It's very nice to be able to give something back to the people who support us."

What Adrian Butterfield loves about Handel is his "huge personality". "He comes across as an energetic and positive person, direct in his emotions. Compared to his contemporary, Bach, he was also more cosmopolitan. His emotions come across in his music and especially in his operas. You feel he really understands the emotions of his characters."

Butterfield is Associate Director of the London Handel Festival and the Tilford Bach Festival and leader of the London Handel Orchestra where he also plays the violin. "Players have to take more responsibility when the leader is playing an instrument too. It makes it more interesting for the musicians."

Musically, what is particularly exciting about the 'Tune your Harps' performance is that the musicians will be playing on period instru

ments, which are copies of 18th century instruments. Butterfield has a reputation as one of the most versatile period-instrument musicians of his generation. "Composers wrote for these instruments," so it makes sense to use them. "They have a lower pitch and the string instruments use gut strings. What you end up with is a gentler sound and a variety of colour of sound as the instruments are less standardised than modern instruments and you get more variety of instruments."

Butterfield is looking forward to playing the Concerto Grosso op 6 no 9. "The concerto is number 9 of 12. We have performed all other 11 concertos, so I'm looking forward to completing it."

"Handel was a vocal composer and he was skilled in an adapting the music for different singers, making it fit their voice like a suit fits a body." What this concert offers the audience is "fabulous singers". "Carolyn [Sampson] is one of the best sopranos in the world, particularly for this type of music. She has a beautiful voice and is a joy to work with. Christopher [Ainslie] has come through opera school – he is up and coming at the moment and a potential star. It will be very exciting for the audience to hear them both."

Butterfield comes from a musical family For his father, playing the piano was "like smoking". "He would play ten minute bursts" as if sustaining his habit. His sister also plays the piano to a high standard. Butterfield started playing the violin at around the age of four, sang from a young age and was a chorister of St Paul's Cathedral. He is a graduate of Trinity College Cambridge and is now Professor of Baroque Violin at the Royal College of Music.

As a musician Butterfield is obliged to wear the "uniform" of white tie and tails, but he wanted something slightly different, which is what Roubi L'Roubi was able to offer him. As a violinist, he needed enough shoulder and arm room in a bespoke suit, as his right arm is moving out in a rapid, repetitive motion during performance. Another important consideration was the material of the jacket and shirt in the chin and collarbone area – it was important that the violin did not slip on the material while resting. Roubi designed him a shirt of cotton and a tailcoat made of wool. His tailcoat he describes as "good quality, smart and beautiful".

Butterfield's love of live performance is palpable. Part of that love stems from the audience who attend the London Handel Orchestra performances and the Handel Festival. "Some of them are obsessed with Handel. They even come to our rehearsals." "Their enthusiasm is infectious" which helps create "a feeling of excitement". "In live performance nothing is quite the same. There is a sense of risk and excitement. You can't beat it really."
