Saw JON BRION at LARGO over the weekend and was not disappointed which is a rare feet these days. Brion, the quirky, awkward mind behind such idiosyncratic soundtracks as PUNCH DRUNK LOVE and THE ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF A SPOTLESS MIND was smart and charismatic while constructing songs shouted out by the audience on the fly.

This sent me on the quest to find a Jon Brion mixtape to post, which apparently does not actually exist in physical form although one of your favorite internet blogs decided to make a tracklisting for it. I'm not quite sure how that helps my cause any more than the girl who intentionally gave me blue balls in the 7th Grade but I'll cut them some slack and trust that their intetions were pure. Bitch.

But, my search did lead me to THE MIXTAPECLUB- a loose collective of music mix lovers based out of NYC, and although this mix does not actually contain any Jon Brion, one of Michelle Higa's earlier mixes does. I couldn't resist putting this one up which has two songs I've been bugging out on lately: Shuggie's Strawberry Letter #23 and Dilla's Baby. This cannot be a bad thing.

A friend of mine growing up had an extensive collection of "Teen Angel" magazines. I can remember hanging out at his place, thumbing through pages of low riders, prison pics and tattoo art. It was a magazine dedicated to chicano youth that was published out of Rialto. (If you take 101 North to San Francisco, you can find copies of TA in small markets).

One of the sections was 'Dedications' that were letters and notes from inmates in Soledad and Corcoran, etc. dedicating songs to loved ones on the outside. And here's a mix dedicated to you!

Ben (McRubes, Rubix, Beezle, the McBeezlebub--I cannot stress enough how well this man wears a nickname! Damn!) is an editor at Centerstage Chicago, so I'm always asking what he's listening to. Dude knows. So naive and impressionable I am, he has shown me the way: Atmosphere, People Under the Stairs, Spoon...Bernardo di Beeze has turned me on to all kinds of crazy good shit over the years.

There are tracks on these mixes that are straight-up ridiculous. Um, how can you not sigh (and mean it) when you hear Lou Reed "Perfect Day" or just feel baller driving around with The Coup "Me and Jesus the Pimp in a '79 Granada Last Night" playing. But "Ben" (sometimes it suits him), is a master of the pacing. Bang. I said it. See what I mean:

Sorry about the late post but I've been busy trying to comprehend my life. Last week I was taking part in HEMBLECHA with the Lakota people in South Dakota and today I'm in Hawaii spending time with family. Then it's off to Oregon for the Country Fair before embarking on THE WEDDING DJ TOUR which will take me through the UK, NYC and eventually land me at THE FRANK SINATRA HOUSE in Palm Springs. But more on that later.

So please roll with us if we can't keep up our daily mix regimen. We're gonna do our best but sometimes that little thing called life gets in the way.

I'm pretty sure we haven't deserved it but we've been shown an amazing about of love throughout our travels. Love from people who have countless reasons to hate. My friends man...they’re breaking up, they’re getting back together, they're moving in together and adopting kitties. My girl is even heading to Buenos Aires to be with her man. So yeah. Just spent a weekend chillin with my best friends from college in a hot tub talking about love over vodka-soaked watermelon (baller status), and the entire time we were backed up by the perfect mixtape from my friend James: YOUNG, DUMB, IN LOVE.

James hits it all with rad 60s girl groups as the melodic glue holding this heartbreaker of a love mix together (in five acts to be exact). The mix had me (completely) at track four: Then He Kissed Me by The Crystals. Hot. Damn.

I can remember rocking out with Elisabeth Shue to Then He Kissed Me during the opening credits of Adventures in Babysitting, and being totally stoked about the MAKING OUT to come in my future. At the time I could not have predicted that some of my hotter high school moments would be initiated over Major League — Rick "Wild Thing" Vaughn...I guess anything can happen.

I've been scouring THE NETZ for a good soundtrack mix for a hot minute now and of course just when I was ready to give up someone sends one to me. I dig the way this universe thing works yo.

JC of playjazzloud hit me with some mixes and I wetted myself when I saw that a soundtrack mix was among them. Then I started listening to the mix and I wetted myself again as it starts off with Johnny Greenwood's Future Markets from everybody's favorite MILKSHAKE movie, There Will Be Blood. By the time the mix bumps Air's High School Lover from The Virgin Suicides I had to change my pants completely. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Hanging out in bars is funny. You meet all these people but never really get to know anyone. And then one day you get down to some real talk and you learn things about someone you thought you knew and get your wig blown.

That's how it was with my homegirl Kate. I've known her for a little while now and knew her to be good peoples and a dope DJ with a deep, deep knowledge of records. The first time we met I asked her about her set and she started naming off records and I knew none of them. I worked at a record store for 5 years, so yeah, my ego took a hit. I was impressed.

And then, to top it all off, the next time I saw her she whipped out her ipod and started showing me pictures of these cakes she makes. CHOCOLATE CAKE/SCUPLTURES of classic album covers.

Almost didn't post a mix today but then was like "Yo, it's Monday...if there's any day that the peoples need music it's today." So here we are.

One of the side effects of me doing this blog has been an increase of time on 'Ye Olde Internets. Mostly this is a good thing as I've educated myself on free energy, new music and healthier eating. But for every action there is a equal and opposite reaction-that's Newton son!-and sometimes you have to wonder about the direction we are moving in as a collective peoples. Here, here and here.

Newton's law applies to mixes as well. For every good one there is a equally and opposite crap one and it has become my life to try and filter through them. Luckily, there are people like IRON LEG who make what I do easier. This is a mix from his blog and it's exactly what I want to listen to RIGHT NOW. I've kinda been on a oldies soul kick. James Reitano is the shit. I know I've said this several times in this exact same space but it's true. Well, maybe he's not a scholar or a gentleman but he is a ridiculous artist who constantly blows my mind. He is currently 75 pages deep of a 100 page graphic novel for GZA. A graphic novel that James wrote, drew and inked himself. That's REAL TALK.

But he also knows what I want to hear. Needed to take a little break from ye ole hip hop and lo and behold James posts a Rockabilly/Punk Mix. Is there anything this man can't do? Now if he can just get this girl to holler at me...

ECHO BASE, aka mixtapemixtape!!! senior offices, was invaded by pigeons yesterday. No joke. They've been living in the walls of the crib for some time but they finally made their triumphant push past our defenses and into the office.

Luckily for me, Fern (my roommate) and Wu-Tang (the cat) were quick to react to the situation. Well, Wu-Tang was quick. It took Fern a little while to snatch up his pigeon but he did so with a BED, BATH AND BEYOND bag wrapped around his hand. You gotta be careful of that bird flu.

This is a mix Fern made. He's been bugging me to post it for a second but now that he hath saved my ass from the pigeon assassins sent here to kill us I really have no choice. Fernando is a talented writer, photographer and cinematographer (not to mention mashup artist). You've probably seen his work on commercials for these things they call IPHONES.

I know some of you didn't believe me but I'm f'reals. Zen's mom is a DJ. I tried to write something clever about ATOMIC NANCY but this is what you need to know:

The Atomic Cafe opened in 1946 in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles by Minoru and Ito Matoba. During the late 70's to mid 80's their daughter, Nancy, transformed the quiet neighborhood bar/ cafe into one of L.A.'s most popular hang outs for the local punk rock scene, politicians, and the Japanese mafia. On any given night you could see the likes of Blondie, The Go-Go's, Devo, X, Warhol, David Byrne, Bowie sitting down having a bowl of noodles in the company of old Japanese men with full body tattoos. The legendary jukebox played everything from The Germs to Mori Shinichi until 4 in the morning as crazy waitresses would be jumping on top of tables trying to serve food.

Yep...coolest ever. And she still rocks parties! LOVE YOU NANCY!

This is a mix of 45's from that same jukebox and originally aired on DUBLAB. Some real historical LA ish. There, enough said.

So I wasn't gonna do this because A) Everyone is and it's kinda crazy to see people's reaction to the passing of someone they only thought they knew and B) His movies just never were that good. Sorry, I said it.

This is a mix that I made for a girlfriend when we were living in different cities. It's heavy on the Cat Power, TV on the Radio, Outkast tip and is melancholy and technically flawed but seems to be right for the day. YOU, YOU & YOU!
