Véritable hystérie collective des copropriétaires des maisons de villes où habite Nathalie, on craint que la pelouse reste dans son état actuel : c'est-à-dire... qu'il en a un peu d'arrachée, qu'il y a des tas de roches et de terres dessus. La rue devant nous est en travaux. Ils refont l'asphaltage et, même si ce n'était pas prévu, ils semblent partis pour faire un trottoir de notre côté de la rue.

Mais y a un peu de pelouse arrachée. Il y a de la terre et des roches sur la pelouse.

Si vous saviez le nombre d'appels effrayés et obsessifs que Nathalie a reçu et le nombre de fois que j'ai eu à prendre en note des ''Rappelle telle madame, elle panique pour la pelouse'' ... C'est ridicule à en pleurer. DE LA PELOUSE. ÇA REPOUSSE ! Et les contracteurs sont en vacances de la construction. Prenez votre mal en patience.

Looks as if Roche wants to "dress" itself in the Genentech brand based on Pharmaceutical Executive's online report today. Genentech's sales force

looks safe to me with regard to initial job cuts but many of the non-R&D

balance of the company functions in South San Francisco could be at risk

when the to-be-full owners move into the "house" and take over

day-to-day management. There's been mention of a possible increase

in the sales force in the Pharmexec's report of their interviews with Roche management. I read Roche's intent (while risking the loss of the Genentech

Golden Goose's future product productivity) is to achieve a transformation

of its own relatively nonproductive R&D by "merging into Genentech" --

as moving into the Genentech "business model house" while bringing

along a lot of their possessions. They may bring a lot of "baggage" which may be

inappropriate and prove destructive of the research culture which has

been so successful at Genentech.

Will the Swiss accountants and bankers be able to transform the combined companies via their access to appropriate tools, diagnostics and biologic drugs

to take the lead among Big Pharma companies in moving away from the primary

care-based blockbuster business model to a more successful one? Will they

have the management and leadership skills in developing future personalized medicine products as the company's principal source of revenue? Or will their eagerness to cut costs lead them to destroy the critical drivers of that potential success and strip the company of its head, heart and passion that made

Genentech so distinctive and successful. They unintentionally stripped

Syntex, a former darling of Wall Street for its innovation in R&D, of its

essential "DNA" and eventually the unit's "will to live" as they laid off its senior management, commercial and eventually development "worker bees" and

sold off its assets around the world. Their intent was to maintain the Syntex R&D Golden Goose but they lost sight of what nurtured it as they sought to recoup

their purchase investment in raiding the coffers and selling off assets. Genentech management watched these events close and up front in the mid-1990s, fought

for their independence and until just this week successfully convinced Roche

not to do this to Genentech. What a shock for them to witness Roche's seeming

corporate memory loss!

It appears from my point of view that Roche is trying to take a giant leap in the direction of becoming a company based on "progressive blockbusters" a la the Genentech business model of building value and revenues with successive indications for its specialty biologic products at very high prices. Their expect they have a hedge against future increased U.S. government control of pricing of drugs, and eventually, refusal to reimburse high priced biologics that have only a minimal impact on life expectancy (a la the U.K.'s NICE committee failure to reimburse many biologics) by becoming a leader in producing biosimilars.

See how you read the "tea leaves" expressed by reported statements of Roche's Schwan from the Pharmaceutical Executive Report...(he)"did note that some jobs could be transitioned or eliminated. Operational efficiencies in late-stage development, manufacturing, commercialization, and administration will be combined to reduce complexity and reduce redundancy, ..... Manufacturing facilities will also be streamlined, with a principal building in San Francisco and another operation in New Jersey. In addition, the sales team may be increased to cover new products. Roche will run the commercial operations in the United States from San Francisco and will consolidate all headquarters functions to its West Coast base. I don't expect the final buyout papers will be signed in 2008 so there will be some time for Genentech staff to get over the initial shock and I expect "denial" on the part of many, the move to anger and eventually to acceptance of the outcome as they move through the recognized steps of "mourning a loss." The success or failure of Roche's plan will depend on whether or not the personnel can "commit" to the new management.

Am 23. Juli 08 war der Aufschrei laut, als John Fahey, Präsident der WADA (World Anti Doping Agency), bekannt gab, dass die von ihm repräsentierte Organisation mit einer der größten Pharmafirmen in enger Kooperation stand. Nichts neues für viele. Ein absolutes Novum war allerdings seine Verlautbarung, dass Roche als erstes Unternehmen weltweit ihrem Präparat Mircera (das von Radrennfahrer gerne zum Doping benutzt wird, da es als EPO der dritten Generation gilt und bis vor Kurzem mit keinem Dopingtest nachgewiesen werden konnte) ein spezielles Molekül beigemischt haben soll, was es ermöglicht, Mircera dennoch bei Dopingtests erkenntlich zu machen.

Warum die WADA sich keine Probe von Mircera geben lässt, um einen geeigneten Test hierfür zu entwickeln, fragten sich viele Fachleute. Dass das Statement des WADA Präsidenten nur heiße Luft und pure Panikmache war, erklärte Roche dann direkt einige Stunden später. Martina Rupp, die Roche Pressefrau, hierzu in einer Email: "Die seitens der WADA gegebene Information, dass Roche dem Präparate Mircera ein geheimes Molekül beifügt, um Mircera für Dopingtests erkennbar zu machen, ist falsch!"

Martine Rupp weiter: "Roche hat der WADA Proben von Mircera zukommen lassen, damit diese hierdurch einen funktionierenden Dopingtest herstellen können."

Ein Komplott der WADA und Roche, um dopende Athleten in Sicherheit zu wiegen und sie dann eiskalt zu erwischen? Wohl kaum! Ein missglückter Versuch, Athleten einzuschüchtern, um die Anzahl der Dopingfälle zu senken und die WADA dadurch in einem guten Licht da stehen zu lassen? Wohl eher :)

Doping kann im Spitzensport nicht verhindert werden. Ganz im Gegenteil: Durch Dopingtests sind Athleten oftmals darauf angewiesen, noch gefährlichere Medikamente einzunehmen und Methoden anzuwenden, um die Dopingtests zu unterwandern. Siehe z.B. die weltweit größte Wrestling Promotion WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment): früher nahmen alle Testosteron und Deca, in Ausnahmefällen auch Oxymetholon oder Methandienon. Seitdem die WWE Dopingkontrollen durchzieht, fällt auf, dass der Großteil der Anwender auf kurzwirksame Substanzen in Tablettenform umgestiegen ist, beispielsweise Stanozolol. Mehr muss zu diesem Thema nicht geschrieben werden...

La empresa farmacéutica suiza Roche Holding AG suspenderá su investigación sobre el VIH debido que ninguno de sus fármacos en evaluación representa mejoras significativas frente a los medicamentos existentes, sostuvo el viernes una portavoz de la compañía.

La portavoz Linda Dyson confirmó un correo electrónico enviado el miércoles a activistas de la lucha contra el sida informándoles sobre la decisión.

Hemos "decidido reenfocar nuestros recursos para virología en enfermedades en las que se puedan aportar mejoras sustanciales frente a los medicamentos existentes," dijo la compañía en ese informe.

"Actualmente, científicos investigadores que trabajan en el VIH están siendo reasignados a otras actividades," afirmó en un correo electrónico Dyson, portavoz de la oficina de Roche en Nueva Jersey, Estados Unidos.

La portavoz declinó especificar cuánto había avanzado Roche en la investigación sobre el VIH.

La compañía indicó en el comunicado enviado a activistas que inicialmente estaba entusiasmada con el potencial de algunos fármacos mostrado en exámenes pre-clínicos, pero que ha "concluido que ninguno provee un beneficio mayor para pacientes en comparación a las medicinas que actualmente están en el mercado."

Roche Offer to Purchase Genentech Fuels "What ifs"

It seems that Roche thinks its management can do a better job running Genentech day to day as it makes its move to acquire Genentech outright. Or perhaps Roche sees the price for acquisition never getting any better in the future.

Novartis bought out the other shareholders of Chiron to own the company in a time of Chiron's weakness in delivering flu vaccine. Other than a global push back for pricing decisions for its biologic drugs that aren't accepted in a world where governments control access to drugs based on their reimbursement powers, Genentech is in a strong position.

Former heads of research of Big Pharma companies usually admit they cannot create or maintain the culture that fosters innovation seen in the successful biotech companies like Genentech. Roche's CEO Severin Schwan says "We are looking forward to working more closely with our colleagues from Genentech. We have great respect for their achievements and we will take the necessary steps to nurture Genentech's innovative and unique science-driven culture." Roche management strongly resisted maintaining Genentech's R&D freedom when it became the majority owner in the 1990s but was "oh so" fortunate that they listened to the wisdom of others and didn't merge the two companies together at that time. We understand that internal voices at Genentech played a strong role in warning against a "Syntex-style" takeover--the latter results they witnessed with front row seats in the Bay Area.

In today's challenging marketplace, Roche needs the "golden goose" capabilities of Genentech research to deliver income and products to fill its international pipeline while Genentech needs its freedom to market its products internationally to grow into a global company. Currently Genentech is a USA regional only commercial company. Roche's first right of refusal for commercial rights outside the U.S. has placed a glass ceiling over Genentech that blocks it from becoming a global company until a date that could be more than 10 years away--sometime after 2020--according to local hearsay.

This author believes that a business model for moving successfully toward personalized medicine will be critical for biopharma companies that survive the new paradigm market that makes the small molecule primary care based "blockbuster "model obsolete for Big Pharma companies. Folks at Windhover have suggested that the "Progressive Blockbuster" model is the future. Genentech is the poster child for that approach as they have built blockbuster revenues through adding layers of income from new indications successively to the initial launch indication. I've always expected J&J, with its device, diagnostic businesses alongside its drug subsidiaries under the same "tent," would show the capability to achieve this first. J&J has stumbled a lot in achieving this goal of marketing drugs with biomarkers and companion diagnostics while Roche surprised me in moving more rapidly in this direction. Clearly, the takeout of Genentech will place them in optimal position to make a success of personalized medicine mission, if they can avoid putting Genentech in down spiral or even worse, a death spiral that their takeover of Syntex produced. But we need to remember that the Syntex situation was from a position of weakness with the patent expiration of Naprosyn. Syntex didn't have the rich pipeline that Genentech enjoys and now Roche might own worldwide.

The merger of Genentech and Roche to make a personalized medicine powerhouse might be the culmination of that coupling. Genentech learned the importance of having a biomarker for each new biologic with the regulatory barriers they faced to launch Herceptin, initially, without a commercially available diagnostic. Now Genentech looks to have a biomarker and diagnostic for each and every new drug in their pipeline--although it publicly has stated it didn't want to own the diagnostic. This will be a great success for Roche which potentially has the capability to build the needed diagnostic alongside the Genentech drug.

The remaining big question is whether or not Roche management can avoid destroying the "golden goose" of discovery and research innovation at Genentech when it takes over. Does the Basel giant have the wisdom to provide the steps necessary "to nurture Genentech's innovative and unique science-driven culture."

"What ifs" are circulating across the Internet space furiously as insiders at the current Roche Palo Alto research unit believe their site will be closed as part of this action if moved ahead. Will Genentech shareholders agree to this buyout? Will Genentech research employees stay or leave to found new startups and/or strengthen emerging biopharma companies? Will a deluge of commercialization staff currently at Genentech descend on the Bay Area labor market ? Will the takeover give the Bay Area cluster a huge infusion of talent and experienced management to take the region to the next level as the takeover of Syntex did in the mid-1990s when experienced management, especially, in regulatory and clinical alongside research and development staff gave the biotech labor force a huge bump? Watch for the answers as they happen.

Meanwhile, I encourage you to give an ear to our Genentech and Roche colleagues locally as they handle this "rug being pulled out from under their feet" experience. The future is scarey and there will be a lot of dislocations before this is all over--for others in the Bay Area as well as those at these companies. Those who have survived layoffs and takeovers--hostile as well as friendly--need to reach out to comfort and support these industry colleagues who are entering period of potential career "mourning."

Have been doing some digging on this new drug and found the following bits of information it. So thought I'd share it with you:

CERA (Continuous Erythropoiesis Receptor Activator), developed by Swiss pharmaceutical giant F. Hoffman-La Roche, the drug is marketed under the brand name Micera. Soon available in Europe, the sale and distribution of Micera in the United States has been the subject of a long court battle between Roche and Amgen, the company that originally developed recombinant erythropoietin – originally marketed as EPOGEN – in the late 1980s.

Like synthetic erythropoietin (rEPO), CERA was developed to as a treatment for the anemia that results from chronic kidney disease. Unlike single injections of rEPO, CERA interacts with erythropoietin receptors and has a longer-lasting effect. Patients who were normally required to inject rEPO three times a week were able to achieve the same results with only one or two injections per month.According to some reports, CERA is connected to a chemical called polyethylene glycol (PEG), which allows it to last longer in the body.

I know this doesn't sound like a lot right now, but it helps create a better picture of what we are dealing with. As soon as I find out more on it, I will share it with you.
