during my waking hours of the day, i'm on my way to school
my 15-20 minute drive leaves some room for reflection
that is, when i'm not blasting my music :]

my mind wanders and i think of random things
these are some things i've thought about and written down
because i'm not always able to blog everyday

----------

you think you know a person

but a new partner comes along and completely chages everythng about them

i unerstand that i new partner can bring on new and different interests

however, i believe it is important to remain yourself because that is who, originally, your significant other became attracted to

and who your friends and family know

stay true to yourself

----------

it's amazing how programed we are in our day-to-day activities

it's as simple as leaving the house at the same time or sitting in the same seat in class

during high school, i decided i didn't want to live the 9-5 life

i didn't want to be a robot

but it doesn't really matter

everything we do is programed and if someone or something disrupts the usual, we feel somewhat at a loss

so just remember that when something doesn't go the way it usually does, don't get all bent out of shape

----------

AND

i thought cops were supposed to set an example?

they are supposed to be model citizens

why is it that cops hardly seem to use their tun signal and they speed?

they must be above the law...

or maybe it's just the Clarksville PD

We are blessed by an abundance of creative and silly energy among our sphere of friends.

The invitation to our friend Flannery's recent birthday included the recommendation that gifts were not necessary, apart from anything fun found on the sidewalk.

(This is how we roll, too. My partner and I were each huge fans of the found object, long before we were introduced to the totally wonderful Found Magazine, or, to each other for that matter.)

So, as we were making way by foot to the party, I stumbled across a pressed / molded paper fiber box insert. My best guess is that it was dunnage to protect wine bottles. I thought that if held with the longest side going vertically, it kinda sorta looked rather rib cagey. It was cool. I thought so anyway, had a hunch that Flannery might too, it was completely unsullied by any manner of hobo mung, so I grabbed it.

The picture above arrived in my inbox. This looks to be a small, cut-out portion of the entire tray (Flannery? are there MORE of these fabulous robot heads?) from which a totally badass robot head has been fashioned.

I'm thrilled that she appears to have genuinely enjoyed our gift. She is pretty easy to shop for, though.

A couple of months back we had gathered quotes on what musicians considered the hardest part about being in a band is. What essentially came out of it was that humans were the hardest part. Well If you're sick of your drummer ranting all day long about how his girlfriend doesn't give him the attention he deserves, or your bassist systematically arriving late to rehearsals because he's hung over, Captured! by Robots presents an alternative for ya.

I can't stress enough how unproductive I feel when I see people like this. I was already impressed by that Guitar Zeroes guitarist, well this is a whole other brand of genius.

A little while ago, word circulated through the office that the bomb squad team (and their bomb investigating robot !!) were just around the block scoping out a suspicious metallic som'n som'n lassoed to a tree.

The local constabulary had any and all access to rubber neckers totally clamped down. No dice.

Then come back. Don't worry, I'll bold the next sentence so it's easy to find when you get back.

My painting art robot, Zanelle, is now interactive. If you are unfamiliar with Zanelle, she is a robot that paints on just about any flat surface with a brush and artists grade paints. You can see a video of her painting in my links tab or at www.vanarman.com. There are several samples of our art work at this link as well.

Anyways, I had it out and ready for interactive use in a pre-opening at the FLIK Interactive Art exhibition (@ Art Whino in Washington D.C.'s National Harbor). Also on display were three of my works with Zanelle...

Using either a mouse or drawing pad, people were able to use Zanelle to make their own paintings. I have the drawing interface set up at a child's art table. I intended it for children, but as can be seen, adults and even entire families were using Zanelle to paint.

I did not know what to expect, but I thought what people chose to paint was pretty cool. I will post some samples as more are made. But people typically had a go-to image that they knew they could draw well, and they then simply tried making that image, except with the robot. Some examples: one made an R2-D2, another a pumpkin, and several just scribbled.

Near the end of the night, both the children in this family made paintings. One was a design that looked like several stars and the other was a house. I wish I had taken pictures so I could show them here...

I got this published in an essay contest. Basically, it answers the question, "If you had a robot, what would you have it do?" I said tell the truth.

The ability to deceive or lie, whether it be in the face of moral or immoral context, is embedded within the human genome. Conversely, robots simply consist of an apparatus of bolts and gears; they are totally bereft of a central nervous system or a conscience. Yet, these androids can bond with humans and enhance their owner’s ego in a manner that neither animals, nor civilization can surpass. Robots perform the complex task of identifying the truth. Certainly these machine-human interactions can work to society’s advantage.

As it had been during the Anglo-Saxon era, today’s society is solely founded on the magnitude of a man’s ego. Considering how both praise and gratuitous honor are frequently rewarded to people of unworthy standards, it appears as though human disingenuousness is the root of present-day society’s superficiality. A sense of guilt lingers in the conscience of a human when he/she divulges the dirty truth to another soul. Therefore, prudence would be exercised by relying on robots to advocate their owners’ most-eminent, accurate charm.

As indicated by a recent article published in The New York Times (“The Real Transformers” by Robin Heing), robots are being produced to resemble human beings. Whether this is merely an endeavor to replicate society’s values or an inability to satisfy the needs of consumers, robots are becoming increasingly popular in the manufacturing industry. Hence, one can compare the joy a body-builder feels when steroids are placed on the market to the production of robots: an object is taking on the task of a human, which in this situation is distinguishing between reality and idealism.

The Wife of Bath, in Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales, fashions the idealized marriage that should be shared among a couple. However, the narrator inexplicitly defines matrimony as a vow of deception: “[…] if thou wilt praisen my beauty […] thus sayest thou, old barrel full of lies (294-303)! If a husband glorifies his wife with false admiration, then both spouses reside within an unrealistic world. On the contrary, if a robot were to praise a woman, only phrases of integrity would exit the robot’s metal jaws. Because contemporary engineering techniques prohibit artificial pituitary glands from being installed inside the “brain” of a robot, machines cannot respond emotionally or deceitfully in specific situations; therefore, robots can only see the black and white aspects of the story and the good and bad qualities of their owner.

Why is it beneficial to society that robots are unable to see shades of gray? Given that people are exceedingly concerned with how others perceive them, society often confuses fiction with reality. However, as robots interact with humans more often, new depth will be added to civilization. The superficial wife whose husband blandished her with fallacious tribute will gain a genuine sense of worth. A robot’s task is to discern the true qualities of a person. Unquestionably, the point being made, as expressed by Emile Cioran in The Trouble with Being Born is that “man is a robot with defects.”

You all know from scifi lore that when the robots rise up and overthrow the meat puppet masters they will create all manner of robotic creatures of the Earth to hunt us down. Why oh why do we have to hasten the day by havin' creatures all designed and ready for 'em. I recently came across a story about the Hirose Fukushima lab in Japan (of course) where they are diligently working on .. wait for it .. robot SNAKES!

The ACM-R5 snakebot that can slither on land and swim gracefully in the water, it's rhythmic movement is quite hypnotic - wait a minute - it's a snake - of course it's hypnotic. The joint of ACM-R5 consists of an universal joint and bellows. It was developed on the basis of the previous model HELIX, which was designed for research of spirochete-like helical swimming. An universal joint plays a role of bones, and bellows do a role of an integument. ACM-R5 can form a smooth shape due to this joint structure, and it is important for effective locomotion. Each joint unit has CPU, battery, motors, so they can operate independently. Through communication lines each unit exchanges signals and automatically recognizes its number from the head, and how many units join the system. Thanks to this system operators can remove, add, and exchange units freely and they can operate ACM-R5 flexibly according to conditions. ACM-R5 is equipped with advanced control system and shows the ability of amphibious snake-like robots to a certain extent.

Check it out here - before you see it climbing out of your toliet at night ;-)

Multiple audience members created paintings with my art robot, Zanelle, at the opening of the FLIK Interactive Art Exhibition last night (July 26, 2008). A video of how she paints with a brush on canvas can be seen at www.vanarman.com, or in the link bar on this blog.

At times there was a line of several people waiting to give the robot a shot. At first people were shy but once samples of audience work started piling up on the robot, everyone seemed to want to make a painting with it. Below is some of my favorite audience produced work.

I particularly like the walrus. It was painted by someone who told me they could not draw very well. I told her not to worry about that and loaded a picture of a walrus into the art application that is used to control my robot. She then traced the walrus and came out with what I consider a dramatic piece.

Some people traced while others free-handed. Below is a painting of a robot called "CC6". It was designed by a 7 year old who made 3 or 4 practice robots before finally arriving at his final design.

The second night of the opening will begin tonight at 6:00 PM (July 26, 2008). Come by the Washington D.C. National Harbor to try your hand at painting with an art robot.

[Category: Ideas. If you are new to my blog please read the "About itimes3" page first]

The 20th century started with a few early cars and planes which were very limited in performace and highly unreliable, and ended with cars and planes being ubiquitous, reliable and at an advanced stage of development.

In the same way, the 21st century started with relatively few robots with very limited functionality, and believe me, at its end robots will be ubiquitous, reliable, and at an advanced stage of development. Cars, buses, boats, planes will be robots - the human driver will be gone. The armies of the major world powers will be largely robotic. Surgeons, dentists and many other professions which rely on precision and relatively static knowledge will be robotized. Households and offices will have large numbers of robots deployed in different shapes and with different and complex functionality and intelligence. In addition, small robots will roam inside our bodies to control functions, monitor us and enchance us. And much more.

This pattern has already started in a limited way. Within a few decades, robots will start to control and manage the more mundane - and much of the advanced - aspects of daily life to a degree perhaps almost inconceivable today.

In other words: whilst the 20th century was the century of cars and airplanes, the 21st century will most definitely be the century of robotics.

I am all for robots and robotics, however there is a problem looming large, and from what I can see, lessons of the past are not being applied: this is the problem of security.

In the past two decades, personal computers have taken over much of our business lives and quite a bit of our private lives too in many cases, and as the usage of computers increases, so have threats, which keep increasing in scale and severity. Recently uncovered security risks in the DNS infrastructure of the Internet is just one of many issues that show how everything is connected and how much of the infrastructure is vulnerable.

These vulnerabilities exists because people who develop the technologies first and foremost focus on functionality - the bells and whistles. It is natural and human to do so. Security is invisible until things go wrong, and therefore is not sexy. Managers and shareholders who do not understand the technology and the risks (or who don't care), want the product to market and just care for the functionality of it. Security is an afterthought, and will often only be addressed once a serious problem is uncovered.

The problem with robotics is the technology will interfere with our lives much deeper and on a much larger scale. Essentially, whilst computers have largely remained at the periphery of our lives (albeit connected to us and within society as a whole), robots and robotics will eventually almost fully integrate with our lives and society. They will be part of us, to such a degree that there will be a time, not too far into the future, where we will not be able to live without them.

If all computers in the world failed today economies would collapse and humanity would suffer major problems, but we would survive after some adjustments.

If all robots in the world fail 80 or 100 years from now, much of humanity will not survive because the robots will be running our lives and civilization to such a large degree.

An issue with robots is that many people still see them as individual entities: some cute humanoid robot getting us a beer or a robotic pet dog doing funny tricks. The truth is, robots will be part of an integrated "universe" which will be centrally controlled to a large degree. Robots will interact and communicate with us and with each other, and thus will be able to send and receive transmissions of data. They will need to be updated and upgraded, which will likely be a fully automated process (think an advanced version of Windows Update). Manufacturers, governments, service providers and many others will all have a measure of control over armies of robots, which implies an ability to operate, control, update them as part of a network.

Nowadays, viruses, worms, internet hacks etc. spread around the internet in seconds. The result may be that our computer or network is disabled for some time. Once the true age of robotics is upon us, this type of threat will be much more severe because complications can easily be devastating.

The artificial intelligence which many robots will possess is an added risk factor: a human programmer could implant rogue behaviour which could be hidden in the increased complexity of the software and be triggered by random events, sometimes years after the robot is first deployed. In advanced stages, a robot or robotic control entity ("central command" of a group of robots) could "seed" rogue behaviour into other robots without human intervention, and manipulate it so that it becomes vitually undetectable.

Robots will have much more impact, so instead of a virus disabling a personal computer, the "virus" that hits a robot may spur the device (or group of devices) into killing or destruction. And whilst it is inconveivable that your Roomba will rear up from the floor and headbutt you in anger for not emptying its dust tray, the much more advanced robots of the future may very well be programmed to go rogue for whatever reason: by "hackers", by industry insiders for reasons of personal grievance, by enemies, by criminals, by terrorists, or simply because of human error during the development process of the robot "brain".

To avoid this type of scenario, I would like to float the idea of setting up a security think-tank for the robotics industry globally, in which top-notch scientists and programmers would participate to design, from scratch ideally, secure operating systems for robots, communications and behavioral protocols, physical security and access to the software, etc. This would have to be a global effort, rising above politics and commercial interests, for the benefit of humanity as a whole (however once secure technologies have been developed and agreed upon, these can then obviously be used in commercial and individual government applications).

Rather than adapting your existing version of Linux or Windows for robotics use, I believe it is essential that new, highly secure methods be developed to create and protect the core intelligence of the robots of this century and beyond.

There will always be rogue elements trying to disrupt daily life, but when it comes to robotics if for once we don't start with the "outside" (functionality), but rather with the "inside" (that what ultimately powers and protects the functionality) we will be much better off in the long term.

If you like this idea and you work in a type of industry where this is relevant, I would be happy to discuss in more detail, answer questions or assist in other ways. For details and contact information please see the "About itimes3" page.
