Okay.

So, we've spent some time exploring an important year in Charles Starrett's cowboy star career. That would be the year of 1935. This is when Starrett first pulled on his boots and starred in his a Western. That film was "Gallant Defender."

1945 would probably rank as the second most important year in his career. That's when he began to make Durango Kid films exclusively, with "The Return Of The Durango Kid."

What was Wild Bill Elliott up to in 1945? Well, he was portraying the creation of comic artist Fred Harman -- Red Ryder. He would be the second of four actors to play the role (Don "Red" Barry, Allan Lane and Jim Bannon were the others).

"Colorado Pioneers" co-stars Robert Blake, and concerns a bunch of city kids who come West to learn a thing or two about being cowhands. This Republic film is strictly for a younger audience.

This opens the door to a discussion on what the intended audience was for Charles Starrett's Western films, and how much a consideration of the age-range of the audience effected the filmmakers' choices in making these films.

Let us continue this discussion on another day.

My title might be a bit in poor taste, but it seems Robert Blake followed just that advice on a fateful day back in May 2001 after dining at Vitello's Restaurant in Studio City. Although a jury found him not guilty, it is pretty widely assumed that Blake murdered his wife Bonnie Lee Bakley after eating at Vitello's, while the two were parked just around the corner from the restaurant. So this weekend, while in Studio City, I dragged my boyfriend and my parents to do a little Vitello's stalking.

Vitello's had long been a favorite of Blake's - he dined there at least 3 times a week - and the restaurant even named a dish after him - Fusilli a la Robert Blake (I'm not kidding!). On May 4, 2001, after finishing dinner and leaving the restaurant, Blake returned to Vitello's claiming he left his gun in the booth where he had just eaten. While he was searching for his gun, Blake claimed his wife was shot while sitting in their parked car on Woodbridge Road, just around the corner from Vitello's. Although Blake was charged with Bakley's murder, he was aquitted of all charges on March 16, 2005.

At first I was a little hesitant to eat at the restaurant, thinking it might be a morbid stalking trip, but as soon as I walked in the door and was greeted by the Maitre D and the hundreds of autographed celebrity headshots on the entryway wall, all my fears were put aside. Vitello's is a very charming place with AMAZING food at completely reasonable prices and absolutely FABULOUS service! It's not too hard to see why the restaurant is a favorite of celebrities - it is definitely a place I will dine at again.

Robert's house, where he lived with Bakley during their marriage, is located just a few blocks away from Vitello's. Apparently, while Blake lived in the main house, Bakley stayed in a guest house located on the property. After the murder, Blake sold this house to Alex Kingston of ER fame. Alex had the home completely remodeled and subsequently sold it to another buyer. She never lived there.

Until next time, Happy Stalking! :)

Stalk It: Vitello's Restaurant is located at 4349 Tujunga Avenue in Studio City. Try the cannoli's - they are amazing!! You can visit their website here. After dinner, be sure to hit up Pomm, a super cute boutique and art gallery located right across the street at 4330 Tujunga Avenue - the Jenn + Jane jewelry they sell is adorable!! Robert Blake's former home is located at 11604 Dilling Street in Studio City.

So yo think your dreams have passed you by? You think that your chance at greatness was shot? Well have a look at my resume of masterful ideas that never were. The following are a list of the greatest ideas of the greatest mind of the greatest generation. A compilation of movie screen plays, books, tv shows and music that no company ever had the balls to allow production on.

Movies:

Kurt Cobrains- A documentary on the last 37 hours of Kurt's life. Leading up to his Grand Exit.

Kunta No Foot- Part two of roots. Alex Haley put the kibosh on production.

Bush's Black Babies- A history of all of GW Bush's illegitimate bi-racial kids. With a cameo by Conndi Rice.

Jackie Onasis Hendrix- The would be romance of Jackie O and Jimi Hendrix.

Only the North Tower- A confrontation between Bush and Osama pushing the limits of a friendship.

No Country for Broke Back- Pretty much the guy from No Country killing gays in the mountains of the west.

Books:

I did it my way- OJ's autobiography.

I did it- An admission by OJ.

It took me forever to clean the blood up- A detailed description of the murder of OJ's ex.

I helped him out- The guidlines OJ gave Robert Blake.

How to pee and stay free- A do it yourself book by Robert Kelly (R. Kelly).

They never found my prints- The secret of how Michael Jackson's taped fingers kept him out of jail.

Washed up at 8- Dakota Fannings unauthorized autobiography.

TV:

Prime Time Toilet- A hidden camera reality show. (Privacy laws put show on hiatus)

To Save a Life- People put in real life saving situations by our producers for ratings.

Your Child or the Money- A gameshow where price tags are placed on a parents love.

Say Your Prayers- A prank show where people are kidnapped at gun point and told to pray before they die.

Music:

The Crotch Hair Combover- 3 of the 4 band members caught on To catch a predator. Convictions pending.

Hoe Slappin'- Arrested on first day of recording for domestic violence. Jason Kidd was the financial backer.

Nine Down- A duet with Travis Henry. All money was tied up in paternity test kits.

So the next time you think your idea is super , just remember, Those body gaurds around the executive types hit really hard. So you'll only be able to get out an idea or two before you're knocked unconscience and wake up in a field on the outskirts of Vegas.

Electra Glide in Blue [1973]

Someone once said, "Electra Glide in Blue is the best movie you have never heard of." Whoever said that, I would most defiantly have to agree. Before I tell you why I found this so entertaining, lets start with the basics.

Robert Blake stars as 'John Wintergreen'. Wintergreen is sometimes referred to as 'Big John', a tease as to his very short height. John is a motorcycle cop in Arizona. Along with his partner 'Zipper' (Billy Green Bush), they lead a boring job writing tickets and citations. Zipper is just fine with that, but Big John has big dreams.

He wants to become a detective and get all the glitz and glamour that goes along with it. Well, a murder falsely set up as a suicide give him the chance to prove his detective skills. And as he plays his usual "by the book" routine, he finds people on both sides of the law are constantly trying to bend it in their favor. While searching for the murderer, he listens to what everyone says rather than listening to the voice within himself, telling him what he knew was true all the long.

But you know, living "by the book" and listening to yourself can only get you so far, and John Wintergreen has a few more lessons to learn before the credits roll.

Electra Glide in Blue is an odd little movie. This movie is very difficult to write about. It really must be seen to appreciate its full beauty. There is no ONE climax that the movie builds around. Rather, several small ones. It keeps the flow smooth and always ready for the next moment. I have not seen any other Robert Blake movies, but from what I hear, this is his best performance. I don't doubt that one bit. This performance is nothing short of perfect. You feel like John Wintergreen is a real person. Most likely someone you have met in real life before. Also, Billy Green Bush does a fantastic job as Zipper. Someone get this man a best supporting actor nomination please!! The same can go for Mitchell Ryan playing detective 'Harve Pool'. Yes, I know hes the dad from 'Dharma & Greg', but a role like this shows he can do much more.

The story and acting are so gripping, they suck you in the middle immediately. It makes you think on many multilayer levels. After pulling your thoughts and emotions in so many directions, its hard to find a common theme in the movie. But as confused as it may seem, its really a beautiful piece of work. When you see Wintergreen put on his detective suit for the first time, or when you see him pull over a Vietnam vet truck driver, or when you see Zipper's joy to show off his new bike, it all feels so real, it could be a documentary almost. Maybe slightly exaggerated, but still real to life none the less :)

This is a wonderful movie, but its not perfect. People put this in the stunt car movie category. They say the motorcycle chase scene is like 'Vanishing Point' or 'Gone in 60 seconds'. If you are watching it for this reason, prepare to be disappointed. There is only one chase scene, and it seems to only last one minute. It is very well done, but still, this is not a 'chase' or ride by the seat of your pants type movie.

Although I have high praises, I'm not sure this movie is a 5 star complete classic. Some people may find it useless and boring. You will at the very least be entertained however. After much thought between 3, 4, and 5 stars, I have decided to give it a 4. Hopefully, you will see why, if you have a different opinion, let me know! That's why we have comments! :)

So has anyone else noticed a ridiculous rash of old people committing crimes??? For instance; it all started off with the old guy that drove into the Santa Monica Farmer's Market in 2003. He drove for a ridiculously long time with his foot on the gas exclaiming that he "thought it was the brakes". Okay, seriously after the first few people were taken out; don't ya think even the most unobservant of folks would notice something was up? But eleven people dead and two miles later; he realizes that either his brakes are pretty bunk or he just rose a few notches in the eyes of the Bathrobe Mafia and their evil world take-over plan.

So there begins the rash of crime...crime committed by people over 60. If you remember correctly; shortly thereafter; an old man in Florida plowed over a farmer's market there too. Concidence??? I think NOT!!! They are all in it together!! I'm telling you the truth!

And let's flashback even further; how about to 2001? Robert Blake. Yes, he's in on it too! Martha Stewart? Another peice of the puzzle known as the secret underground "Bathrobe Mafia" Yes, the streets are not safe anymore with the Bathrobe Mafia littering them with their murder, insider trading tips, lead foots, and other acts of deviance.

Let's throw Woody Allen into the mix as well. I mean, marrying and banging your daughter should definitely be right up there in the Bathrobe Mafia crime circle. Bill O'Reilly and his phone sex calls? More terror brought on by the Bathrobe Mafia. Pat O'brien should have place in the Bathrobe Mafia Hall of Fame, with his groping, drunkenness and racism. Phil Spector...another pawn in the game of the EVIL Bathrobe Mafia. I'm telling you, we've got to watch out for these sinister human beings. Anyone over 60 should immediately be suspect in your book. Damn them looking all sweet and old and innocent. They use use it to their advantage and then plead ignorance or alzheimer's or some shit. It's such a perfect ploy!

ALAS; the bathrobe mafia is back and have struck yet again. This time it was two elderly women; ages 77 and 75. If you have been chronicling the bathrobe mafia such as I have; you may have taken note back in 2005 when these two women surfaced with their insurance policy scheme.

Here is what Olga and Helen did. They befriended old people...old homeless dudes and then took out life insurance policies on them...ha ha!! Sinister, right? Indeed!! Then they would run them over in dark alleys in downtown Los Angeles and collect the money.

Now if they would've done it once or twice and taken the money and ran, they probably would've gotten away with it. But no, Olga and Helen (well, Olga claims that bitch Helen got greedy) and they decided to do this 23 @#$%@ times. Twenty-three goddamn times...???? A red flag is bound to be raised at some point...

Helen and Olga thought they had the protection of the bathrobe mafia but the mafia can only do so much to protect you. The first couple o times; fine...but after that; simmer the fuck down with your killing and befriending, even the most professional contract killers (flea market guy) know when to say when.

So Helen and Olga stew away for three years before they get their court date. I ask you; WHAT THE HELL WERE THEY DOING? Working at the salvation army? soup kitchen? Maybe they were knitting stockings for junkies on skid row?

The news story said; "the woman were emotionless when the verdict was reached for conspiracy to commit murder and no chance of parole". Of course they were emotionless. They are in their 70's; how much time do they have left? What do they care? It's free retirement living for them for the next few years before they kick the bucket.

I think the rash of crime spawned by the bathrobe mafia is the thought process of; "hell I'm old, I may as well commit some crimes now and get locked up rather then be homeless..my social security is all gone cuz of those damn casinos out in Palm Springs so what's a lonely old fool to do now?" Commit crime...that is what is in store for us all at the end of life.

We decide either to sit around in a home, convalescent place, streets, work at 711 and spend our days staring at the walls or go out and LIVE! By live, I mean commit crime and cause havoc all over the countryside. NO one will suspect you of evil-doing; you are old and swwet and innocent looking...fuck people up! It is your time! The golden years mother fucker!

On that note; I can't wait to get old...I mean decripid old...like I'm so fraile and cute old that no one thinks I'm capable of evil world take-over plans...that is when I'll strike and make my mark. I'll join the bathrobe mafia and start commiting crimes. I'll start small with shoplifting knitting needles and work my way up to white slavery and sex slave trading and heroin muling. I'm excited for the new pathway I've been led to by those innovative, clever folks known only to the underground crime rings as the infamous Bathrobe Mafia!

US AMBASSADOR for Sri Lanka Robert Blake Tuesday (18) afternoon called on Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka at Army Headquarters in order to receive an update on current security developments and discuss matters of bilateral military issues and training programmes.

The US envoy during his cordial exchange of views raised inquiries into the conduct of military operations in Wanni to liberate the masses from LTTE terrorist grip and also the measures, being adopted to receive those who are fleeing un-cleared areas in Wanni after abandoning their homes. In addition, in response to queries Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka briefed the envoy on development projects underway in the East and security measures launched to restore civil administration.

I think that Robert Blake's character in the David Lynch movie "Lost Highway" is the creepiest, creepiest, creepiest film character ever. I feel very strongly about this. You can try to convince me otherwise but I think you will be wasting your time. Last night while I was sitting in my shoe chair I wished that, when I had that DVD in my possession, I had taken a picture of Blake and stored the image on my camera so I could look at it from time to time to re-live the creepiness and maybe share it with others. Why would I want to do that? I don't know! I'm just telling you my thoughts.

As luck would have it, the IFC showed "Lost Highway" late last night and I got a picture of Robert Blake. Now I can think of something else.

I've been mentally compiling a list of objects that either are or will be soon as obsolete as the buggy whip. They are: pay telephones, white out and ascots. Add more if you want.

In other news:Don just left for Chicago. He's expanding the brewing system at Piece Brewery and Restaurant. Busy, busy, busy. (I think that Piece has the best pizza anywhere, by the way.) Before he left he gave me a heart shaped box of candy and some nail clippers. If you look very, very carefully at the box lid, which I don't think he did, you can see that it says "Russel Stovers...Just for him." You'd think that if you were going to go through the trouble to engender something you'd make it a little more obvious than that. Like package the candy in a burlap bag or a tool box? No matter which words are on it there isn't really anything masculine about a heart shaped box of candy. And it's so hard to read--I bet a lot of gals are getting "Just for him" candy this year. I don't know if that's going to cause any problems but you know how some people will bitch about anything. Me, I'd eat candy even if it was "Just for White Supremacists." I think candy is great.

My chum Nicola Hay suggests this delirious moment from KISS ME KATE. Fiona very nearly chose it as her first Cinema Euphoria entry, but Louis Prima as a cartoon orang-utan just pipped it on the Smilometer.

But who can truly measure such things? As Nicola says, Ann Miller always looked like she was really enjoying herself.

(I don't have the DVD -- damnit, why DON'T I? -- so I can't replace this rather fuzzy image found on Youtube with a sharper one.)

This movie also features Bob Fosse, previously featured in Cinema Euphoria in his role as director of SWEET CHARITY. Choreographer Hermes Pan (renowned for his work with Fred Astaire, though Fred is the prime mover there) encouraged Fosse to do his own choreography, since Fosse had a unique way of moving.

A lot of young Lynchians see Ann Miller in MULHOLLAND DRIVE and don't realise what a wonderful artist they're seeing. Lynch, who never auditions actors, probably saw Miller in a talk show or interview (he cast Mystery Man Robert Blake in LOST HIGHWAY after remembering his appearances on Johnny Carson). Miller gave great interviews, and she had quite a story to tell. Among other things, she believed she was the reincarnation of Queen Hathshepsut of Ancient Egypt, and her difficulties with men stemmed from the fact that in her previous life she could have them executed whenever they displeased her.

Well, I guess that would simplify things.

October 29, Drew Peterson reported his wife Stacy missing. She is his fourth wife. His third wife died under suspicious circumstances; and Stacy's disappearance led authorities to exhume the ex-wife's body, and Friday's autopsy revealed that her "accidental" drowning was, indeed, murder.

Now, let's assume for a moment that Peterson killed both women: What is the thought process by which, having gotten away with one murder, you would risk a second one when even the mere suspicion of the second murder would probably lead to the exhumation of the first body (right now, it might be easier to prosecute him for killing his ex-wife than for killing Stacy, because there's physical evidence)? Stupidity? Peterson's a police sergeant: He knows how investigations work. Arrogance and a sense of invincibility? Even O.J. Simpson waited until after he was acquitted and immune from further criminal prosecution before breaking the law (again) in any major way.

Then there's the show of support ("I can relate to Drew Peterson") from Craig Stebic, whose own wife either disappeared or "disappeared" April 30.

I have to wonder... Do suspects such as Stebic and Peterson genuinely believe in one another's innocence, or they simply feel the need to show solidarity with a fellow member of the "brotherhood" -- and for that matter, does the current suspect really want this support? When Robert Blake was standing trial for killing his wife, I can't believe he was thrilled to have O.J. Simpson announce he was behind him 100%.

The Department of Works clearly subscribed to a Whig interpretation of the Civil Wars when they put this sign up...

I'm just back from honeymoon in the Isles of Scilly, where my wife and I - I get to say that now! - had a great time wandering round the islands visiting historical sites. Luckily she is just as interested in tramping round rocky islands trying to find bronze age graves as I am...

I'll be blogging about the various things we visited: today's post is about Admiral Robert Blake's assault on the islands in 1651.

Scilly went through as turbulent a time politically during the Civil Wars as the mainland - strongly royalist, it was captured by Parliament only for troops to mutiny and return it to royalist hands. By 1651, the governor Sir John Grenville was using the islands to carry out privateering raids on Commonwealth and Dutch shipping. Sir John seems to have been some kind of military wunderkind - he led troops into battle at Lansdowne when he was only 16 after his father was killed in action, and even in 1651 he was only 23.

Blake's assault started by anchoring his ships to the east of Tresco - a first assault on Old Grimsby was rebuffed due to unfriendly winds and currents, but through a second assault he took Tresco then Bryher to the west. The point at which Blake's forces landed is now about the site of the Island Hotel, where we stayed.

This set Blake up nicely for a further assault on St Mary's, the largest of the islands. A makeshift battery was set up at the southern tip of Tresco, only to explode killing a number of men and injuring Blake himself. A second battery at the same point proved more successful and was used to bombard the harbour at St Mary's to the south. Unfortunately there's not much left today.

As a result, Grenville and Blake negotiated terms and the royalist forces were able to achieve an honourable surrender. Parliament then set to fortifying the islands - "Cromwell's castle" was built as a gun platform on the west side of Tresco, recycling materials from an earlier gun platform further up the hill. Despite being built in the 1550s (and incidentally very poorly sited) this has become known as "Charles's castle", to counterpoint Cromwell's castle further down the hill. Hence the sign I started with!

Overall about 3,000 troops were stationed in the islands, a huge amount considering there would have been perhaps 600 native inhabitants before this point. It reinforced to me the oft-cited point about the New Model Army - that this was perhaps the first time there had been such a huge movement of men across the country, and was maybe one of the factors that allowed for such rapid radicalisation of parts of the army in the late 1640s. You wonder what impact it had on Scilly.

You know, I didn't really follow Robert Blake's trial. I only know some facts from the beginning of the trial, and every once in a while I'd read or hear the latest on the TV.

You'll have to forgive my ignorance of the facts, but I'm quite happy that he was acquitted. He may have shot Bonnie Lee Bakley himself or got someone else to do the deed for him. I really don't know, and probably will never know. And I'm comfortable with that.

Here are some pictures that I'd like to share that took place before, during and after the verdict.

After a 12-week trial that ended with jurors saying they did not believe two Hollywood stuntmen central to the prosecution's case, actor Robert Blake was found not guilty Wednesday of fatally shooting his wife.

Prosecutors "couldn't put the gun in his hand," said jury foreman Thomas Nicholson. "I felt the primary thing from what I saw was that the circumstantial evidence was flimsy."

The jury of seven men and five women deliberated for nine days in a Van Nuys courthouse before acquitting Blake of charges that he had killed Bonny Lee Bakley, 44. The mother of four, Bakley was shot as she sat in Blake's car on May 4, 2001, near Vitello's, the Studio City restaurant where the couple had just had dinner.

"As things progressed, it just turned out there were a lot of gaps," said Michael Pollack, 47, an alternate juror who said that when the trial began, he believed Blake didn't stand a chance of acquittal.

In the absence of direct evidence, jurors were asked to believe testimony from the stuntmen, who testified that Blake had asked them to kill Bakley two months before she was slain. But Blake's attorney, M. Gerald Schwartzbach, was able to undermine their credibility by presenting evidence that their admitted use of cocaine and methamphetamine could have caused them to be delusional.

"I didn't believe either one of them," said Charles Safko, a 50-year-old truck driver from Winnetka. "I thought they were both so full of it, it was unbelievable."

In the end, the two Hollywood stuntmen — McLarty and Hambleton — were crucial to the prosecution's case, and their credibility proved an insurmountable problem for the prosecution.

Schwartzbach also emphasized repeatedly the lack of eyewitnesses, fingerprints or other forensic evidence linking Blake to the murder weapon, a Walther P-38 handgun.

Blake spent the next 11 months in a private cell at Men's Central Jail until his release on $1.5-million bail. While in jail, his hair, which he had previously dyed jet black, went gray.

BakleyMurder.com - The Murder of Bonny Lee Bakley and the Trial of Robert Blake

This is a fantastic source for information regarding the Robert Blake case. Tidbits from the preliminary hearing can be found on this site as well.

Witnesses for the Prosecution is another recommended source of information.

The Robert Blake Case File:
Here you'll find links to an assortment of documents related to the Robert Blake murder case. Los Angeles prosecutors have charged the 68-year-old actor with the May 2001 shooting death of wife Bonny Lee Bakley. Earle Caldwell, Blake's bodyguard, has been charged with conspiracy to commit murder.

Who Shot Bonnie Lee Bakley? This article goes over the entire story, however, if you look at the bibliography, some of the sources stem from the tabloids.

What the Judge Denied
Perhaps tidbits of this will be allowed into evidence later, but if you read through this document and assume everything is true, Robert Blake is a free man. I highly recommend this read.

Court TV Extra!
This is a great place to go to catch the lastest on any trial, including the Blake trial live. I still haven't finished watching the opening statements yet, so every once in a while I go to this site to continue watching it.

And last, but not least........

The Baretta Star Murder Case Court TV will update you here as well.

I would be the perfect juror in this case as for one, this case bears no weight on my emotions, and two, I still have yet to form an opinion on Robert Blake's guilt or innocense. I'm waiting to hear more evidence before I make up my mind. I do have to say though, from watching the preliminary hearing, the state's witnesses are a royal joke! They made total fools out of themselves which only makes me wonder if they'll do it again once they take the stand.

I'm curious of what everyone else is thinking about this case. Any opinions?
