The Boston trip ended almost wonderfully, thank you for wondering! PLS, my dearest mother, and myself visited Tufts University early in the morning on Wednesday (yes, yesterday) and absolutely fell in love. So liberal! So cloistered! So much fun! Not for me, but my sister would have a blast. After the tour, we went on an adventure to find my dad. After walking around Medford, MA (where Tufts is located) for about half an hour, we found my dad and the car...and a dead battery. It took two-and-a-half hours and $30 to jump the battery. AAA and I do NOT get along. However, after that adventure, we got on the road and made it home before 9pm. Cool!

After publishing this entry, I am going to go blow all of my money on concert tickets. It is probably in my best interest not to write about it here, but on Saturday (I think at 12pm, but I'm not certain) a very small amount of tickets are going on sale for the 21+ Lotus show at Mercury Lounge, NYC on September 24. A few special things about this show: 1. Tickets are only $10 (!!!!!!). 2. Lotus is playing two sets. 3. To expand upon number two, one of those sets will be devoted to playing Lotus' new album, Hammerstrike, in its entirety. 4. This show is kicking off the entire tour. Even though I already have plans to see Lotus twice in November, and I wasn't planning on coming back to NY until September 25 (for The Bridge show in NYC, and then Ratatat on Saturday, and then Rosh Hashana with the whole fam! Great!), I think I might have to change up some things. If I can get a ticket, this will be an opportunity I can't refuse.

On a related note, I need to figure out if I'm crazy, or if I just don't belong in our money-crazed society. The Lotus show put me in a pickle, because I don't want to buy the ticket if I can't go, but I also don't want to find out I'm able to go and not have a ticket. Father dearest, in all of his wisdom, told me just to buy the ticket; I mean, it's $10, so why not? He also said it would be a great opportunity to make some money; the tickets are in high demand, so people will be willing to pay far more than $10 for one. Even though I see his point, I am so not down with that! Is that strange? If I need to get rid of the ticket, I just want to resell it for exactly how much I paid for it and move on. Why make money on other people's misfortune (word choice too strong), you know?

So, now, there are some tickets I need to buy: The Bridge, 8/27, The 8x10 (Baltimore); Infected Mushroom, 8/31, Palma (Baltimore); Lotus, 9/24, Mercury Lounge (NYC); Ratatat, 9/27, Terminal 5 (NYC; still a maybe); Lotus, 11/1, 9:30 Club (DC; I might be comped for this one, though, so I'm in no rush); STS9, 11/14 and maybe 11/15, 9:30 Club (DC; do I buy a ticket for Sunday night now or wait on it?); Umphrey's McGee, 11/21 and maybe 11/22, 9:30 Club (DC; same one night vs. two night decision to be made); Tea Leaf Green, 11/25 and 11/26, Highline Ballroom (NYC); and Lotus, 11/29, Highline Ballroom (NYC). The other shows aren't *that* important (except for Bisco NYE, which already raped my wallet).

Anyone know if Telepath will be going on tour soon? They are so bomb, and I would love to see them again. Now. Tomorrow? Maybe even Saturday.

Today, I have a somewhat eclectic list of songs available for your listening pleasure. There is a Lotus song and a Telepath song, obviously. However, there are also three other songs which may come as a surprise: "The Naughty Song", by Cory Lee (from the album What A Difference A Day Makes), which was featured on one of the episodes of season three of "The L Word", and is really great in a really odd way; "The Garden, Part III" by Tea Leaf Green from one of their best shows in recent years, 04-22-2006 at CBGB, NYC (RIP); "Ghostwriter", by RJD2 (from the album Deadringer), which you may or may not recognize from a Wells Fargo radio ad which featured the song; and "Country Mile", by The Bridge, from their 05-06-2008 show at Santa Fe Cafe, College Park, MD. Shows at Santa Fe Cafe are interesting to me, musically, because Fe is just a regular college bar in a regular college town, but for some reason it's able to pull in great jam-my artists. Recently, we've had Soulive, Soul'd Out, The Bridge, and Jamie McClean; in September, we're getting The Bridge, The Brew, Licorice, and Pete Francis (so far). I say "we" because I go to school in College Park, and live right up the street from Fe, so I spend quite a bit of time there. Tickets are typically $5-10, the shows are great, there's a patio, and we used to have $1 Rolling Rocks. Why not?

What do you think of taping at shows? Should it always be allowed? Never be allowed? Does it help the artists intrinsically by making their art more available to the public and increasing their fanbase, or hurt them more financially because of the loss of revenue? If you can get a show's tape, is it worth going at all?

I remember the first time I heard M.F. DOOM...I was listening to this track titled "Dead Bent" off of the Farewell Fondle 'Em compilation (Released by Bobbito through Definitive Jux Records, October 30, 2001).

I was just riding chilling and enjoying another ridiculously tight definitive jux compilation (prior to this they had dropped the Definitive Jux presents volume 1 compilation which served as my introduction to a host of acts like Cannibal Ox, Aesop Rock, Mr. Lif, Copywrite, Ill Bill, RJD2, MHZ, Copywrite, etc. etc...they just don't make rosters like they used to...then again Duck Down is doing a damn fine job of bringing focus back to the music with their roster...but as usual I digress)

With all of the "build up"  in this post you can imagine how happy I was to see Madvillain come to fruition (unlike the unlikely swift and changeable...damn). Well at least I can relive the magic again with a superior box set put together by Stones Throw Records to accompany Madlib's remix of the Madvillainy masterpiece.

The pre-orders for the Madvillainy 2 set have ended but the album is available everywhere. Don't lose hope just yet though, after the september 15th stones throw will be departing with a small reserve of the set...enjoy

And I've been LOVING the opening credits, especially, especially the percussion bit at around 0:29.  Every single time we watch it, I tell Dave how much I love those 3 seconds.  (I'm sure being married to me is not going to get old at ALL.)

So I decided to look up Mad Men music and see if I could find who did it.  Do you want to know who?  RJD2!  That's who.  A dude I've been following since like 2002.  I don't have his latest, but I've heard a lot of it because just TODAY I set up an RJD2-based playlist on Pandora. (Okay, that was Dave's idea- but to be sure, the Shakira playlist I made rocks, too.)

Anyway, I saw him live in I don't know what year, but it was at the Meridian and the chick swiped my card and said the machine didn't work and I'd have to use their P.O.S. ATM machine with all the crazy fees and pay cash.  So I did only to find out a few days later that the card payment DID go through.  I called the Meridian a few times, only to talk to a hungover-sounding manager who said he'd look into it.  And I gave up b.c I'm a sucker.

Clearly I'm not holding a grudge.

Anyway, I went up to buy a t-shirt at that concert and was surprised to see RJ handling his own merch.  Don't know why, but I was.  I was a little star-struck, but I thanked him for doing what he does.  He smiled and said, "Thank YOU for doing what you do."  Maybe he meant buying his music and t-shirt, but I was hoping he meant it on some sort of universal karmic level.

auf unserem carbibbeanbeatsfest radio sabor am vergangen freitag hat mir mein homie mirco (bastlaz) von dem popping und locking monster (2 breakdance stile) salah aus frankreich erzählt. aufmerksam geworden habe ich natürlich gleich bei youtube ein bischen rumgesucht, und bin fündig geworden.

ich finde extrem bemerkenswert das salah hier eine zirkusreife (im allerbesten sinne des wortes) performance abliefert.das ist meiner meinung nach artistik auf höchstem niveau. aber strassenartistik eben. breakdance meets artistik meets zirkus meets pantomime. einfach der hammer.

da sieht man das der junge die "niederen formen" urbaner strassenkultur durch seine performance in die "hohen hallen" der bühnenkultur transportiert ohne einen deut realness zu opfern. dicksten respekt!

ein weiteres fast noch bemerkenswerteres video ist das folgende

meine freundin hatte mir vor einiger zeit schon von bill shannon aka. the crutch erzählt, den sie durch zufall in einer doku gesehen hatte. gestern abend habe ich mir die zeit genommen mir die youtube videos mal anzusehen, und ich muss sagen ich war (mal wieder) sprachlos. bill shannon leidet an einem irreparablen hüftgelenksdefekt und kompensiert diese motorische einschränkung durch eine eigene bewegungsform. in obigem musikclip von rjd2 rockt bill shannon einfach mal alles nieder mit seinem bewegungs-, tanz- und skatestil. das fand ich einfach unglaublich.

Did my fair share of tapping as well as tapping people out, going one for one each time I got tapped. That I was surprised at because I wasn't even pursuing submissions, I wanted to work on my positions really and not getting caught. I just saw openings and thought, "hey, there's a submission there" and went for it and it worked.

Did 3 sets of the Sequential Fatigue Challenge, then rode my bicycle couple times around town.

Thursday
Reviewed all passes, sweeps and escapes.

Drilled with light to medium resistance. The light resistance drills were Call Out drills, a pass, sweep or escape was called out and I performed it. The medium resistance drills were Objective drills - for example, drilling for passes my goal was to pass ten times and could use any technique I wanted to. I tried to do all of the passes, but most of the time they were just faints to another pass.

Made the list thinking "what would I like to listen to when I'm rolling?" Nothing too crazy. A lot of chill, fun stuff. A couple artists that I'd like to point out and recommend are RJD2 and Easy Star All Stars. RJD2 makes really great instrumentals, but is more prone to have singers or hip-hop artists cloud it up. Here's my first track from RJD2.

If you're a fan of reggae and Radiohead, get the album "Radiodread" by Easy Star All Stars. They also did a cover album of Pink Floyd entitled "The Dub Side of the Moon". Really good stuff. Here's "Let Down".

Going to eat ramen at my favorite shop (which is closing at the end of the month) then off to watch "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull". Maybe.

Au premier trimestre 2007, les Little Brother avaient sorti, avec l’assistance de DJ Mick Boogie, And justus for all

Grâce à cette mixtape, la transition stylistique ne s’est pas du tout faite brusquement, c’est ce que nous en avions retenu en gros, et Getback a montré par la suite que les deux MCs ont été capable de conserver leur identité sonore en choisissant divers producteurs comme Khrysis (DJ, producteur et ingé son de la Justus League), Illmind, Nottz, Hi-Tek, etc… Le tour de force était plus que réussi, je m’étais permis de ce fait d’affirmer que le départ de 9th Wonder était la meilleure chose qui soit arrivée aux Little Brother et leur éviter de stagner. Pour marquer le coup, le duo originaire de Caroline du Nord réédite ce mois de Juin …and justus for all en street-album, autrement dit une version ‘no-DJ’ en format CD, avec des modifications par rapport à la tape d’origine. 

Ce qui part. Vu qu’il ne s’agit plus d’une mixtape, Mick Boogie n’a plus lieu d’être (et c’est tant mieux remarquez), ni les interludes, ni les freestyles utilisant des instrus existants ou dont les droits n’autorisaient pas l’édition en support physique. Parmi les titres suivants qui ont fini donc à la corbeille : « Bring It On » feat Ray Cash, « Without You » avec Bishop Lamont, « Grown Man » avec Talib Kweli, le « Rise and Fall » feat AZ, « Let It Go » avec les Black Star (ça c’est dommage par contre) produit par 9th Wonder et « One Eleven » de Big Pooh et O Dash qui reprenait un beat de J Dilla (ça aussi c’est dommage de l’avoir jeté). Si jamais vous avez encore cette mixtape sur CD gravé ou quelque part sur votre disque dur, gardez-les s’ils vous ont plu, c’est juste un conseil de ma part. 

Ce qu’il reste. Une bonne grosse dizaine de titres dont les très bons « Delusional » avec Oddissee (le MC/producteur de la maison Low Budget), « Can’t Stop Us » feat Chaundon et le street-single « The Pressure ». On y retrouve aussi des tracks ‘stratégiques’ comme « Do It To Death » feat Supastition et Rhymefest produit par Focus (l’un des sbires de Dr Dre) et « Best Kept Secret » feat LEGAGY et produit par RJD2, ainsi que les remixes de « Back At It » feat Cormega, « Life of the Party » avec l’excellent couplet de Skillz (produit par Nottz) et « Cross That Line » avec Kardinal Offishall (qui reste le seul instru de 9th Wonder). Pour rappel, les versions originales de ces trois titres se trouvent sur la compilation (moyenne, faut dire) Soldiers of Fortune du Hall of Justus. Il reste des résidus d'ad-libs qui traînent par-ci par-là, où les artistes balancent des 'shoot out' destinés à Mick Boogie, ils n'ont pas été récurés pour l'occasion pour effacer toutes traces de ce qu'était la mixtape initialement.

Les nouveautés. Une meilleure qualité de son ! ça saute aux oreilles que les sons ont été remasterisés, ça redonne un gain de fraîcheur. Sinon, cinq titres supplémentaires et inédits comblent ceux retirés. C’est là l’intérêt majeur de …and justus for all. On a le droit d’entendre les capacités de chanteur de Phonte sur « Too Late For Us », produit par DJ Spinna et feat Tiye Phoenix des Polyrhythm Addicts (elle aussi au chant et rap). « Cool As A Fan » passe tranquillement, pas comme les beats de Khrysis qui se prend pour Madlib sur « Losin’ It » feat Jozeemo, et sur « Stylin’ » histoire d’épater Oh No qui pose dessus en featuring. « Time of Your Life » achève ce street-album par un morceau légèrement soulful de toute beauté, avec Carlitta Durand (la meilleure chanteuse de la Justus League) et à ses côtés Phonte en mode « Ladies Night » des Kool & The Gang. 

Recommandé aux fans des Little Brother.
