WMR has learned from knowledgeable Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) sources that the Bush administration is putting the final touches on a plan that would see martial law declared in the United States with various scenarios anticipated as triggers. The triggers include a continuing economic collapse with massive social unrest, bank closures resulting in violence against financial institutions, and another fraudulent presidential election that would result in rioting in major cities and campuses around the country.
In addition, Army Corps of Engineer sources report that the assignment of the 3rd Infantry Division’s 1st Brigade Combat Team (BCT) to the Northern Command’s U.S. Army North is to augment FEMA and federal law enforcement in the imposition of traffic controls, crowd control, curfews, enhanced border and port security, and neighborhood patrols in the event a national emergency being declared. The BCT was assigned to duties in Iraq before being assigned to the Northern Command.

On April 3, 2008, WMR reported on a highly-classified document regarding the martial law scenario:

WMR has learned from knowledgeable sources within the US financial community that an alarming confidential and limited distribution document is circulating among senior members of Congress and their senior staff members that is warning of a bleak future for the United States if it does not quickly get its financial house in order. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is among those who have reportedly read the document.

The document is being called the “C & R” document because it reportedly states that if the United States defaults on loans and debt underwriting from China, Japan, and Russia, all of which are propping up the United States government financially, and the United States unilaterally cancels the debts, America can expect a war that will have disastrous results for the United States and the world. “Conflict” is the “C word” in the document.

The other scenario is that the federal government will be forced to drastically raise taxes in order to pay off debts to foreign countries to the point that the American people will react with a popular revolution against the government. “Revolution” is the document’s “R word.

Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky wrote in his essay “Events in St. Petersburg,”

Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky wrote in his essay “Events in St. Petersburg,” “The central figure is the proletariat. The workers start a strike-they unite-they formulate political demands-they turn out on the streets-they gain the enthusiastic sympathy of the entire population-they engage in battles with the army.” Trotsky, in this short but powerful statement, has handed down to us socialists the method and blueprint for real revolution. The way I view this is through the perspective of distinct, specific, stages if enacted can make true the possibility of revolution in this thoroughly corrupted, capitalistic nation. I will attempt to espouse on the different stages. We who are interested in real change should take the slogan from the 2008 presidential race which was used by the ineffectual Democratic Party: ”YES WE CAN” and apply it to the socialist road to revolution. “YES WE CAN” because this road will be paved by us, the workers, the proletariat.

“The central figure is the proletariat.”

The leading actor in this unfolding drama will be the class of the proletariat, the working class. Just as the proletariat is the backbone of capitalist society and keeps it afloat so will the proletariat be the backbone of socialist revolution. Everything will depend on the working class. Without the working class being an integral part of the machine, the machine will inevitably fail. Why do you think the 2008 presidential candidates, Barack Obama and John McCain spent so much of their campaigning trying desperately to appeal to the working class, with silly slogans like “Main St. not Wall St.” and characters like “Joe the Plummer?” Because even Washington politicians realize the importance and power of the working class. This is why the proletariat cannot be neglected and ignored in socialist revolution.

“The workers start a strike”

In one of my previous articles I wrote about the concept of the worker’s strike and how it can be used as a weapon against the enemy government. Trotsky realizes the potential and the power of the strike of the proletariat and how this serves a vital function to the upstart socialist revolution. Like I mentioned above, the proletariat is the backbone of capitalist economy, of society itself. So what will happen if the proletariat revolted and withdrew their labor and support? Complete collapse of society itself. First, the economy will stop at a dead halt and become undone while the effects trickle down to the rest of society. This is enormous power in the proletariat’s hand. Apart from tanks, machine guns and bombs, the strike is the proletariat’s weapon of mass destruction, a weapon that the government cannot fight on its own terms; it is a weapon that the government quakes at the mere thought of it. Imagine if all consumerism stopped, just for one day! If this power can be wielded and focused, as it is said, the sky is the limit. This leads me to my next point.

“they unite”

It cannot be said enough times - unity amongst the proletariat is a MUST if socialist revolution is to succeed. This point cannot be dismissed and it must be emphasized repeatedly! Now this is good in theory but how can millions of workers unite, especially under the banner of socialism? This is the million dollar question. I think it comes down to capitalism exhausting itself in the sense that there will be no choice but to turn to an alternative; a better alternative. We are seeing this take place right now - capitalism is failing the masses at an alarming rate while anger among the proletarians is rising to the point where the government is concerned enough to mobilize its military just in case this anger spills over into society. The proletariat will be out of options and will have to embrace another way for its survival. When the proletariat’s backs are too the wall they will have to unite against the common enemy of capitalism despite the great dividers: culture, race, religion and bi partisan convictions. Oppression and crisis does wonders for unity.

“they formulate political demands”

When the working class uses the strike to its advantage and successfully, the government is crippled and brought down to the floor. Look at the example of the Velvet Revolution in in Europe during the late 1980’s. Mass strike humbled the once powerful government and made it as helpless and weak as a one year old infant. With the strike of the masses executed the proletariat were in a position to make political demands and receive countless concessions from a fearful political elite. What could the government do with continuous strikes looming in the horizon? It was bare and naked before the proletariat. And the workers knowing this, pushed in the dagger even more by making more and more political demands that the government had to honor. The masses in the Velvet Revolution pulled this off flawlessly. This is the same exact method that the proletariat must implement in the United States if any kind of worker’s revolution is to come off the ground. This capitalist government must be forced to fulfill the demands of the workers in the land.

“they turn out on the streets”

This is self explanatory thus I will spend the shortest amount of time explaining this point in depth. Basically, the proletariat must make its presence known, felt and heard. The proletariat must shake of its cobwebs, dust, laziness, fear, selfishness and whatever else hinders man to not act. Going out into the streets can be interpreted as sit ins, protests, riots or anything else that allows the proletariat to scream out from the rooftops. The worker’s scream must be loud enough to keep the government awake and on edge, never without rest.

“sympathy of the entire population”

Again we have an ever important element of revolution, public opinion and support. Without this, the proletariat might as well back up their bags and go home. As inane as it might sound, if the worker’s revolution does not have this, it is as dead as a mouse on a glue trap. Every great revolution in history has succeeded because of the people’s support. If your cause or movement makes itself an enemy of public opinion or of the people of society, then there will be no sympathy given domestic wise and abroad. For the most part, this is what the terrorist excels at doing. He commits an act in the name of his cause that appals the public and quickly, any support his movement had is withdrawn and they find themselves alone on an island, as they say. How do you think Gandhi was victorious, or the mighty struggle against the evil system of apartheid? Sympathy and support. Fidel Castro was a master at this. When the movement is classified as the underdog, or is victimized while it is fighting a fight of righteousness it cannot help but garner momentum and support. Again, look at the Boston Tea Party which mobilized mass support and ignited the American Revolutionary War.

“they engage in battles with the army”

When all the previous steps the entire proletariat population is mobilized then it is time to move on to this next phase. Now it may be enough to have the proletariat rise up and strike to collapse the government, but capitalism is known to fight to the death before it loosens it vice like grip on power, so it will take great discretion to utilize this step. If the American government refuses, even after the proletariat rebels, to dismantle itself it may take an armed proletariat to do it. I am absolutely for non violence and I hope I never see this day, but we have to consider the possibility that it may take this step to finally put an end to American capitalism and all the evil that this entails. But like I said, this will take great discretion on the part of the masses.

So there you have it, the great Trotsky blueprint to revolution. If we decide to embark on this road most assuredly there will be great struggle ahead, but if the proletariat is united into one living, breathing organism, capitalism can deliver it biggest blow and still we, the proletariat, the workers of America will be victorious. Leon Trotsky has shown us the way.

Very briefly, I believe the Chinese markets will be hardest hit over the next 30-60 days as social unrest grows…we are in for a firestorm in China that will rock the world.

Chinese Protest - and this was a year ago.

We are still underestimating the level this Depression will reach and . . . we are underestimating the social unrest that will tear China apart in 2009. A perfect example of the very beginning is a shot in The New York Times with the caption . . . Workers laid off by the Kader Group, a Chinese toymaker, surrounded a police vehicle on Tuesday in violent protests of the company’s job cuts.

…we never had retirement homes and pensions and assisted living in the 1930’s. What is going to happen to the millions of elderly, when their assisted living and end of life care is gone? What happens when companies like Sunrise Assisted Living and Brookdale Senior Living go out of business? Do we shut down the buildings and tell the residents to leave? Go where? That’s what they will ask. Who will take care of me. It’s a double whammy, because they will lose their homes and their pensions and retirement plans are being systematically wiped out…

Iceland… a country that has failed. The world has yet to admit the failure, but we are dancing around the corpse as if it is going to rise. Iceland just borrowed $10B which represents their total GDP. Do you see anything wrong with this picture?

…no matter how much money Paulson pumps out to his buds on Wall Street, Main Street is not buying. They are not buying goods and services, and they are not buying Paulson’s liquefied manure.

As I pointed out earlier this week, you can’t force people to borrow money.

Prison Planet.com
Monday, December 1, 2008

The Washington Post today reports on plans to station 20,000 more U.S. troops inside America for purposes of “domestic security” from September 2011, an expansion of Northcom’s militarization of the country in preparation for potential civil unrest following a total economic collapse or a mass terror attack.

“The U.S. military expects to have 20,000 uniformed troops inside the United States by 2011 trained to help state and local officials respond to a nuclear terrorist attack or other domestic catastrophe, according to Pentagon officials,” reports the Post.

“Domestic emergency deployment may be “just the first example of a series of expansions in presidential and military authority,” or even an increase in domestic surveillance, said Anna Christensen of the ACLU’s National Security Project. And Cato Vice President Gene Healy warned of “a creeping militarization” of homeland security.”

James Bond says: “I think let Taliban come. Atleast they will bring unity through Islam and end this muhajir, sindhi, punjabi, pathan, etc nationalism”

Mansoor says: “It is ironic that when MQM calls for weaponization it is blamed to be a terrorist party but every other party is weaponized since long.

It is true that the threat of Taliban has been created with very deep planning. It is aimed to corner Pathans and Afghanis in the city. ANP is obstructing this agenda and skirmishes have already started in the last few weeks.

It is also seen with clear vision that MQM has revolutionized the city progress and they have turned this city into paradise. Now even the tough oponnents of MQM are supporting them. In this situation any call from MQM would meet a huge success.

When people are behind any party it is difficult to oust it easily. For me, the wall is showing the signs of unbelievable bloodshed in the city. This time MQM is aiming to conquer the ground…Let’s pray may Allah make all of us safe.”
Karachi already has suffered a lot,its almost ten years now that this city has seen a change and relative better law and order, development and stable political situation.
Unfortunately there are forces in Pakistan who never wanted to see peace and growth of this city, those forces are once again putting deaf ear to the threat of Talbinaization of this city and despite ground reality and evidences they are doing nothing to prevent and safe guard the city from the potential threat.
Its once again the time that karachites should stand united to save and prevent there city form Taliban terrorists.
We are trapped at our territories…and now there the same extremists with liberal titles are trapping us here At Karachi….and ANP…here the local leadership are following the footsteps of MQM…with the same way of decorating the chowks with their large portraits…where every local leader has his pic larger than even Asfandyar Wali and Wali Khan(late)….Both MQM and ANP are arming their workers…and The Common Man…who cares…whether Pashtun or Muhajir”

Shaistapth says: “Altaf and his followers should keep in mind….the pro Taliban organizations like SSP and Jaish,Harkat etc…has no less than Pashtun Following in even the Muhajirs and Panjabis…MQM was caused much damage by his Haqeeqi segment…who were Muhajirs…and there will be a new alliance which will consist the anti Mutahida…elements united against them…”

Aazib said on 7th August, 2008
“The leader of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has warned again

Aazib said on 7th August, 2008

“The leader of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has warned against the presence of Taliban in Karachi. He has warned about the activities of Taliban in Karachi and this is borne out by the statement issued by Taliban spokesman Maulvi Umer that they can take over Karachi.

Strangely the Sindh government has brushed aside the threat as baseless and has accused MQM of baseless propaganda. Karachi is the most important and largest city of Pakistan and is rightly called the revenue engine of the country. It is necessary that the government takes such threat seriously instead of resorting to party politics. The fate of the city cannot be left in the hands of inept provincial home minister who has nothing to recommend him besides being a close friend of Asif Zardari.”

Imran Ayub reported at Daily Dawn on November 16, 2008

Police authorities have said that recent attempts to grab pieces of land in certain parts of the city have stirred armed violence and claimed the lives of over 10 political activists in a month, and warned that this might lead to large-scale clashes among rival groups and create a severe law and order situation.

Seeking a political solution to the problem, the police high-ups in a recent communiqué to the Sindh home ministry have called for urgent measures to “arrest the situation before it goes out of control”. Officials at both the central police office and the provincial home ministry confirmed that the communication cited the gravity of the situation.

“In the light of such a revealing letter to the ministry, the home department has taken up the matter and is moving fast for a broad-based policy,” said an official at the Sindh government. “The letter from the police command cites the recent incidents of firing and armed clashes in different parts of the city and their causes, which suggests that attempts (to grab pieces of land) by political groups led to deadly clashes.”

The law enforcers, he said, had identified areas of Orangi Town, Baldia and parts of North Nazimabad as flashpoints, where nearly half a dozen incidents of armed clashes have occurred in a month.

“It said that since Oct 8 to Nov 5, some five incidents of shoot-outs have been reported to different police stations,” said the official. “These incidents occurred on Oct 8, 10, 27, 28, 30 and Nov 5 in the limits of Mochko, Pakistan Bazaar, North Nazimabad and Korangi police stations, in which pedestrians and activists of a couple of political groups were killed.

MQM is known for terrorism, violence, use of force and its undemocratic, racist and fascist ways to establish its hold in the urban areas in Sindh. Who has forgotten Pakistani terrorist chief Altaf Hussain’s call to his followers in 1980s to sell TVs and VCRs and buy Kalashnikovs? People are witness what happened in Sindh in late 80s and 90s.

In a telephonic speech to his followers in Karachi today, the Pakistani terrorist chief called upon his followers once again to buy weapons, learn how to use them, form vigilance committees in neighborhoods and be ready to fight. People should know what the terrorist organization MQM is up to this time.

This is very alarming situation. The MQM of late has been raising the bogey of Taliban invading the provincial metropolis. Extremism is a problem in Pakistan and it should be handled in a proper way. It should however not be used as a ruse to attack a community and start civil war in the province and the country. Recent bombings in some areas in Karachi might have been a part of rehearsal. They harbinger grave dangers ahead.

It is not hard to imagine how these armed to teeth “vigilance” or “defense committees” would be used. They would bring in another spate of violence and ethnic clashes on a large scale to prepare way to achieve the objectives disclosed by the City Nazim at a gathering in Karachi recently.

It is very unfortunate that the federal and provincial governments and their institutions including the law enforcement agencies never take notice of a brewing storm. They only come into action once the damage is done and the situation gets out of hand. It may be too late for them if they wait for too long this time.

P.S. How come one of the major partners in the “” Britain is allowing Pakistani chief terrorist Altaf Hussain to use its land to launch terrorism in Pakistan?
The Washington Post reported that a young gunman used an assault rifle to open fire on about two dozen U.S. citizens eating a sushi dinner in a “posh” Mumbai, India hotel Wednesday night.

The same article talked about how at least 195 people were killed and about 300 wounded “after a wave of coordinated terrorist attacks in Mumbai’s financial district.” Among the dead: Six Americans and 22 foreigners.

Also last week, anti-government protesters stormed Bangkok’s airports in Thailand, causing the airport to close and all flights to be diverted. Four people were injured after explosions at two airports.

And the violence isn’t just overseas.

Saturday morning, two men shot each other in a Toys ‘R’ Us store in Palm Desert, Calif.

It absorbs water faster than most plants and is used in some parts of the world for cleaning sewage. Even more important, it soaks up heavy metals. It is a potential answer to polluted waters. It is nature’s fastest growing woody plant, with some species achieving the phenomenal growth rate of one metre a day! Its culms (poles) are the strongest, lightest natural material known to humankind. A square metre of flooring derived from this “wonder plant” will sell for as much as US$ 100, while in Southern Asia it is used for reinforcing concrete and for scaffolding on skyscrapers. No other woody plant matches bamboo’s versatility in environmental conservation and commerce. It is a viable replacement for both hardwoods and softwoods. Its growth rate is three times that of eucalyptus, and it matures in just three years. Thereafter harvests are possible every second year for up to one hundred and twenty years. India has some twenty million acres of commercial bamboo that account for 60% of the country’s massive paper requirements and much of its commercial timber needs. Over two million tons of edible bamboo shoots – rich in vitamins and low in carbohydrates, fats and proteins - are consumed around the world every year, mostly in Asia. However, bamboo remains an untapped resource in Africa, a state of affairs that the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) hopes to help remedy through a pilot project in Kenya and Tanzania, in collaboration with the Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI) and the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. The project aims to create awareness on the environmental and economic benefits of bamboo in the Lake Victoria basin, and hopefully popularise it throughout the region. Lake Victoria is the world’s second-largest fresh water lake. Its shores are dotted with large urban centres that discharge domestic and industrial waste into its waters. Interestingly, this member of the grass family is not new in Kenya. “Kenya’s water catchments were once covered in bamboo,” says Prof Chin Ong, a hydrologist with ICRAF. “However, most of these forests have since been cleared”. ICRAF has taken a first step towards the revival of the plant by introducing the giant bamboo (Dendrocalamus giganteus) into selected pilot sites in Kenya (Nairobi, Western Kenya) and Tanzania (Musoma). This commercially attractive species can grow in areas traditionally used for sugar cane and coffee cultivation, thus providing an alternative or additional cash crop. Arundinaria alpina, a species of bamboo native to Kenya, will yield as many as 20,000 culms per hectare per year, with each culm growing to a height of 12 metres (40 feet). Most species in fact grow to over 30 metres (90 feet) at full maturity. Kenya has

Giant bamboo at a farm in Thika, Kenya (about 40 km from Nairobi).

few privately owned commercial timber plantations. Most of the country’s timber comes from government forests managed by the Forest Department. However, these forests have been severely over-exploited with only limited replanting. Timber firms are now reportedly forced to import the product from the Congo and Tanzania to manufacture hard and soft board. The country’s leading paper manufacturer, PanPaper of Webuye, is also reportedly using plantation softwoods to fuel its boilers and make paper pulp. With its rapid growth and high woody fibre production, bamboo would supply both industrial needs. At the household level, bamboo would be a valuable source of firewood and charcoal. It yields more than 7,000 kilocalories per kilogram, equivalent to half the yield from an equivalent amount of petroleum. Some species of the plant have large thorns, making them ideal for security hedges. Others grow tall straight culms that form ideal windbreaks that can be sustainably harvested annually. And of course edible bamboo shoots would be a nutritious addition the family table. These shoots, mild and very crunchy, can be eaten raw or cooked. KEFRI already grows several high quality edible varieties. Bamboo rhizomes anchor topsoil along steep slopes and riverbanks, very effectively controlling erosion. Bamboo leaves, sheaves and old culms that die and fall to the ground decompose and create a thick humus layer that enriches the soil. Studies in South East Asia and Kenya have also shown that natural bamboo forests have excellent hydrological functions that promote soil health. Some species of bamboo absorb as much 12 tonnes of atmospheric carbon dioxide per hectare, a valuable asset to deploy against global warming. But bamboo is vulnerable to insects and fungi and its service life can be as low as one year when in direct contact with the ground. However, this can be remedied by appropriate design and cautious use of environmentally friendly preservatives such as boron, according to TRADA (Timber Research and Development Association). In April 2004, fears were also expressed that flowering bamboo would trigger famine in Northeast India, arising from an upsurge in rat populations. Bamboo can be propagated from seeds, though most species flower just once every fifteen to one hundred and twenty years. More viable mass propagation techniques include tissue culture, rhizome cuttings and vegetative cuttings.

“A man can sit in a bamboo house under a bamboo roof, on a bamboo chair at a bamboo table, with a bamboo hat on his head and bamboo sandals on his feet. He can at the same time hold in one hand a bamboo bowl, in the other hand bamboo chopsticks and eat bamboo sprouts. When through with his meal, which has been cooked over a bamboo fire, the table may be washed with a bamboo cloth, and he can fan himself with a bamboo fan, take a siesta on a bamboo bed, lying on a bamboo mat with his head resting on a bamboo pillow. His child might be lying in a bamboo cradle, playing with a bamboo toy. On rising he would smoke a bamboo pipe and taking a bamboo pen, write on a bamboo paper, or carry his articles in bamboo baskets suspended from a bamboo pole, with a bamboo umbrella over his head. He might then take a walk over a bamboo suspension bridge, drink water from a bamboo ladle, and scrape himself with a bamboo scraper (handkerchief)”.

I’ve been glued to the TV and internet. Trying to decipher the news from Mumbai on CNN, Sky News, Aljazeera, France 24, BBC World, on various websites.

Britain and US media has been quick to announce first that British born nationals might be involved. Then they changed it to Pakistanis involved. Al jazeera showed what was happening, interviewed people on the street and mentioned the involvment of Pakistani terrorist groups being involved.

It was interesting to hear what the Indian press had to say. Especially the Indian Express which revealed that the authorities knew almost 10 days in advance about the attack.

So far it seems everyone wants to point their fingers at Pakistan. I doubt that Pakistan is involved in such an action. But yes extremists of Pakistani origin are likely to be involved.

Until everything is cleared up I wonder what Washington is planning. I wonder what dark plans the extremists have. And i wonder what the Hindu extremist groups have in store for the Muslims in Mumbai. As we already know there have been attacks on mosques and churches by Hindu extremists.

http://www.indianexpress.com/news/muslim-outfit-opposes-burial-of-terroris…/392655/

We are going to need more than prayers to prevent another full blown riots and killings like Mumbai has seen before.

I considered smoking
The minute I awoke
But I thought

What would Jesus do?

So I put away my pack
And prayed

When it dawned on me
I had no clue
About prayer and God

I thought about food
Bacon and eggs
Toast and jam

Then I thought
What would Jesus do?

So I turned off the stove
Put away my joy
And meditated

My mind refused
To be still
Constant thoughts
Screamed for attention

So I pondered caffeine
Holy black love
That which my soul craves

Refusing to give in
I wondered
What would Jesus do?

I went downtown
With a desire to help
Someone in need

No one wanted my help
Suspicious eyes
Judged me with contempt

Sometime after dark
Depressing thoughts returned

I thought
With shear determination
What would Jesus do?

Finding a place
Where sinners congregate
I started a riot
And resisted arrest

Sentenced to three years
In a maximum security prison
I was raped and sold by inmates

Several times

I thought
No wonder Jesus
Didn’t mind the cross

According to a French journalist and the imam of the local mosque, around 400 people have been killed in the riots that erupted due to a dispute in the result of the local elections.

The riots are taking place in the Nigerian city of Jos, which is located between the Christian and Muslim areas of Nigeria.

The elections which sparked the violence, did, according to a rumor spread around the city, result in the Christian People’s Democratic Party beating the All Nigerian Peoples Party, a predominantly Muslim party.

Khaled Abubakar, the imam of the city’s central mosque made an estimate of the death toll. “So far about 400 bodies have been brought to the mosque following the outbreak of violence,” he stated. “Families are coming to identify and claim the bodies, while those that cannot be identified or are not claimed by anybody will be interred by the mosque.”

A French journalist confirmed the reports of Abubakar, despite the fact that early reports showed only twenty deaths.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the death toll.

Yakumu Pam, a Christian clergyman in Jos, also commented on the chaos. “Hundreds of people have been killed in the last two days since the riots started,” he stated. “Remains of burned bodies litter some parts of the town. It is so terrible.”

In an effort to stop the fighting, the army has been ordered to open fire on people, and to create a buffer zone between the Christians and the Muslims.

Sun Jar

The Sun Jar collects and stores sunshine so you can use it at night! Simply leave the Sun Jar in a sunny window during the day for about 5 hours of warm glowing light at night.

How does it work? An ingenious combination of old and new, the Sun Jar is made from a traditional Mason jar and high-tech, energy-efficient lighting. Captured inside the jar are a highly efficient solar cell, rechargeable battery and low energy LED lamps. When the jar is placed in sunlight the solar cell creates an electrical current that charges the battery over a few hours. This energy is then used at night to power the three LED lamps inside the jar.

There is no switch on the Sun Jar — no visible controls at all — instead, a clever light sensor inside automatically activates the light when it gets dark or the light turns out. Magical!

The beautiful frosted glass Mason jar is completely water tight — so the Sun Jar can happily be left outside in any weather conditions. A perfect garden light or night light for a child’s bedroom! Original design by Tobias Wong. As seen in DailyCandy.

With dire warnings that the number of stranded tourists in Thailand could rise as high as 300,000, thousands are attempting to leave the country via U-tapao airport in Rayong, around 150 km southeast of the capital Bangkok.

The blockade of the two main international airports by People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) supporters is now in its sixth day. Tensions continue to rise with a pro-government rally planned for today and police surrounding the main international airport, Suvarnabhumi.

With the old international airport, Don Mueang, still in PAD hands, the red-shirted pro-government United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) has supporters massing at the Bangkok city hall. A “Truth Today” talk show is planned for later on, although it is unclear if the fugitive ex-PM Thaksin Shinawatra will feature. Organisers have indicated there are no plans to confront the PAD, but non-specific threats to act where the government has not done so have been made in the past.

Thailand’s Prime Minister remains in Chiang Mai in the north of the country, having declared a state of emergency around the two besieged airports on Friday. The announcement prompted the PAD to move protesters inside terminal buildings and post volunteer guards. Moves by police yesterday to evict the protesters failed, and their vehicles were seized as they retreated. The police presence around the airport has been stepped up as today has gone on and Navy and Air Force personnel may be made available to assist in clearing the protesters.

Adding to calls from the army for the beleaguered People’s Power Party (PPP) government to resign, the Thai Chamber of Commerce labelled the administration as incompetent and called for them to step down; some Chamber of Commerce members made the suggestion that businesses should cease paying taxes if the request is ignored.

The deepening three-month old political crisis continues to have significant economic impact on Thailand. Agriculture is hard hit because the export of fresh produce via air is usually routed through the Suvarnabhumi airport. No new tourists are entering the country; many nations have advised their citizens not to travel to Bangkok, and the repercussions in the tourist industry are expected to last well into 2009. A report in The Bangkok Post suggests that as many as one million in the industry could lose their jobs. In a press conference at the Foreign Ministry, Deputy Prime Minister Olarn Chaipravat highlighted the plight of the hotel, tour, and restaurant trades - expected to be hardest hit in the wake of the crisis.

Police appear reluctant to make forceful moves to remove the protesters from the two airports, likely a consequence of their last clash with the anti-government PAD in October that saw two protesters killed and around 500 injured. Suggestions have been made that action is being deferred pending a decision by the country’s constitutional court on the future of Prime Minister Somchai’s PPP. The party may be outlawed this coming week in light of allegations of vote buying in the last general election. The court may face pressure from the pro-government UDD, their city hall rally is only minutes away from the court buildings. This means that they could surround the premises to protest the court moving to closing statements and a verdict on the fate of the parties in the ruling coalition.

The PAD demonstrators encamped at Government House saw another grenade attack on Saturday night. Fifty are reported injured in the attack, and separate explosions are reported at Sondhi Limthongkul’s ASTV satellite TV station and the occupied Don Mueang airport.

Thousands of terrified Indian Christians are hiding in the forests of Orissa while Hindu fundamentalists burn their homes and kill them without any real reason.

What actually is happening in India is that mobs are targeting churches, orphanages and homes of Christians. Officially, more then two hundred people have now been reported dead and twenty of them were deliberately burned to death in the aftermath of the murder of Hindu leader Lakshmananada Saraswati [unofficial figures have reached 600]. The Christians in India are terrified they left their homes and are taking shelter in forests.

A Christian religious leader said that even in the forests they are not safe. This is not the first time that we are seeing religious hatred in India, in the past we can see examples of Muslims being targeted and the violence cannot be explained in words. There has been very little or no Anglo-American media coverage. The western media outlets are generous enough to give India’s domestic Hindu extremists the label of religious fundamentalism not terrorism.

In the state of Chhattisgarh, four sisters were attacked and abused. In Jharkhand, Hindu fundamentalists attacked a church and tried to “reconvert” the Christian faithful. Four churches have been damaged in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Madhya Pradesh. In Punjab, three Christians have been detained by the police under false accusations. In Uttar Pradesh, three pastors have been beaten, together with the wife of one of them. In Uttarakhand, two Christians have been killed, a priest and his employee.

Thousands of Sikhs were killed in a government-planned genocide. Government officials, politicians and police openly participated. Innocent people were burned alive, women and young girls raped. Yet, there has been no justice.

To date, three religions, Sikhism, Buddhism and Jainism continue to be forcibly listed as sects of Hinduism in the Indian constitution, so that their followers are not given their due rights.

It is time to raise our voices, and show enough is enough. The Indian government has supported the killing of Dalits, Muslims, Sikhs and Christians and many other groups. November 26, 2008, Mumbai attack may be a reaction of killing of innocent people by Indian security forces.

Current security situation is the result of the governments’ (past and present) poor handling of matters.

With Thailand’s People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) still blockading Bangkok’s two international airports, the People’s Power Party (PPP) Prime Minister, Somchai Wongsawat, has declared a state of emergency around Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi international airports.

Police have been ordered to end the blockade and demonstrations, prompting the PAD to move demonstrators inside terminal buildings and post volunteer guards to fend off any action by authorities.

The staunchly royalist and anti-government protesters began upping the stakes in their campaign to bring down the populist PPP government last Sunday. A rallying call for protesters to mass at the occupied Government House compound on Sunday saw thousands ready for their Monday morning march on parliament. Since forcing the cancellation of sessions of both houses of parliament, the protesters have expanded their targets to include temporary government offices at Don Mueang, and then to close both of Bangkok’s international airports.

Disruption by the PAD has now been in progress for over three months. The group which initially demonstrated in 2006 leading to a bloodless military coup to overthrow the now-fugitive ex-PM Thaksin Shinawatra claims the current government is corrupt and merely a proxy for Thaksin, who remains in self-imposed exile. The current escalation of action has been dubbed their ‘final battle’ and although army commanders have dismissed reports that a second coup may be imminent, rumours that such may happen abound.

The PAD action is now starting to have a notable impact on Thailand’s economy. Most apparent is the impact on the tourism industry with several countries advising their nationals not to fly into the country; Tuesday’s invasion and closure of the new international airport saw 3,000 - 4,000 travelers stranded in terminal buildings. Normally handling around 75 flights an hour, Suvarnabhumi airport’s closure is estimated to be costing the agriculture sector of the country’s economy 3 billion baht (US$85 million) per day. As a major segment of the economy, the export by air of fresh fruit and vegetables is among Thailand’s better known products.

Among would-be travellers, it is nearly 5,000 Thai Muslims who planned to make the annual Hajj pilgrimage who are most distressed. Pridi Chueaphudee, an advisor to the leader of the country’s Islamic community, has appealed for the PAD to permit pilgrims to fly out of the new international airport. According to the Bangkok Post there is concern that the blockade may send a message of religious intolerance to Saudi Arabia. Thai Airways have managed to arrange one chartered flight from Hat Yai International Airport to Jeddah, although this will only accommodate 250 of those seeking to attend the Hajj.

Meanwhile, the beleaguered Prime Minister Somchai remains in his home town of Chiang Mai in the north of the country. He was forced to divert there when returning from an APEC summit in Peru, and has set no date for his return to the capital. With concern that a coup may be in the offing, cabinet business is being conducted via video conferences with other senior government officials who are in Bangkok. He has dismissed calls from the military for the current government to be dissolved and fresh elections held.

With police apparently determined to avoid a repeat of the October 7 clashes that left two dead and around 500 injured, it may be the involvement of government supporters that tips the current crisis into violent confrontation. The pro-government United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) has called for their supporters to disperse PAD occupation of the airports should the government fail to act.

Somchai said that his government was legitimate, and that he would continue to work for the country.

This comes in the face of massive anti-government protests, the latest of which saw Bangkok’s main airport being shut down by hundreds of demonstrators.

Speaking in a televised address, Somchai said that “I reassure the people that this government, which is legitimate and came from elections, will keep functioning until the end.”
